4 out of 5 stars well put together, easily understood by industry people.......1998-12-08

This is a practical handbook for anyone in the reinsurance industry. I found the the chapters to be well organized and the illustrations to be quite helpful. I found the price to be somewhat high but considering the content, a fair bargain.

5 out of 5 stars This book is outstanding!.......1998-04-09

The book is written for practioners not for academic studies. Especially the chapters about reinsurance pricing are really intriguing. The author seems to have an in-depth understanding of the matter. Probably the best book in the market.

Book Description

Throughout history, across many centuries and an enormous range of cultures, certain communities have stood out as bastions of creativity and intellectual progress. From ancient Athens to the vibrant American jazz scene of the 20th century, these seemingly disparate enclaves actually share a set of defining characteristics that hold considerable relevance for modern businesses.

The Hothouse Effect examines the dynamics of several such communities, or "creative hothouses," and identifies the factors that drove their unusual creative fervor. Case studies of contemporary businesses, plus interviews with executives, illustrate clearly how the nurturing of creative drive can lead directly to more innovative products, revolutionized processes, and dramatic improvements in results.

This valuable book also offers practical tools for assessing creativity in any organization, then implementing the results of the assessment toward building the creative hothouse effect that will drive innovation, productivity, and results well into the future.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This hothouse is lukewarm at best.......2004-10-02

If you are searching for a resource to help you generate practical ideas to stimulate creativity and innovation in your organization, look elsewhere. The author is at his best when describing the culture and history of ancient Athens, Renaissance Florence or even the 20th centry Bauhaus. In fact, if you are looking to stimulate your own thoughts by researching these historical periods or locations, you might be better served to read historical works with more depth and then draw your own conclusions to apply to the place where you work.

In the end, this type of work represents the worst in "business research." The CHAI-T process described is a pseudoscientifical worm submerged in tequila-like snakeoil. The plotting of points on graphs and the creation of various geometric shapes smacks of another ancient practice ... smashing a vase on a table and having an expert come over interpret the remaining shards.

If you are looking for a more digestible and applicable resource, that offers no scientific delusion, read Tom Kelley's "The Art of Innovation" or even Seth Godin's "Purple Cow." You'll invest less time and come away with some practical ideas for your team or corporate culture.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the "BEST" book I've read in a long time!.......2004-03-02

With its fantastic cover, electric colors, and jacket heading
which reads "Intensify Creativity in Your Organization Using
Secrets from History's Most Innovative Communities," the
"Hothouse Effect" is nicely packaged as an organizational
self-help book. But it is so much more than that. Although it
succeeds in this regard, it is organized in a way that allows
the reader to absorb practical strategies for innovation and
creativity in the workplace. The "Hothouse Effect" is not about
business as usual. As one reader to another, I suggest that you
follow the hyperlink, highlighted in green on the jacket cover,
and read the book.

Dr Kunstler has written an engaging and transcendent book that
takes the reader on a spectacular journey through and around
time to such places as Athens, Florence, Paris, Boston & New
York. Much of the text reads like a fast moving can't put this
book down novel, but it is pure non-fiction, and the characters,
whether historical or contemporary, are real people who have
successfully intensified creativity through an explosive
interrelationship of individual to group which Dr. Kunstler
calls the "Hothouse Effect." The secrets of this phenomenon are
here for anyone seeking an edge in this highly competitive,
interconnected globe of ours.

This is a ten-star book that should be on every business
manager's desk and made into software for the desktops of every
employee, teacher, student, artist, and musician.
The "Hothouse Effect" is absolute "Hyper-thought."

Book Description

After all the research on agricultural risk to date, the treatment of risk in agricultural research is far from harmonious. Many competing risk models have been proposed. Some new methodologies are largely untested. Some of the leading empirical methodologies in agricultural economic research are poorly suited for problems with aggregate data where risk averse behavior is less likely to be important.
This book is intended to (i) define the current state of the literature on agricultural risk research, (ii) provide a critical evaluation of economic risk research on agriculture to date and (iii) set a research agenda that will meet future needs and prospects. This type of research promises to become of increasing importance because agricultural policy in the United States and elsewhere has decidedly shifted from explicit income support objectives to risk-related motivations of helping farmers deal with risk. Beginning with the 1996 Farm Bill, the primary set of policy instruments from U.S. agriculture has shifted from target prices and set aside acreage to agricultural crop insurance.
Because this book is intended to have specific implications for U.S. agricultural policy, it has a decidedly domestic scope, but clearly many of the issues have application abroad. For each of the papers and topics included in this volume, individuals have been selected to give the strongest and broadest possible treatment of each facet of the problem. The result is this comprehensive reference book on the economics of agricultural risk.

4 out of 5 stars An important contribution.......2000-02-21

Taub's work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of an important thinker of Late Antiquity, too often neglected for lack of biographical information. As Taub shows, however, through her patient and careful analysis of Ptolemy's texts and likely sources, we can learn something of the Alexandrian astronomer - chiefly that he cannot be dismissed as just as the late-arriving mathematical straight-man to the wisecracking ancient philosopher Aristotle. The duo are often given semi-equal billing for the cosmology which dominated in the West for more than a thousand years, until the coming of Copernicus. Yet the contradictions intrinsic to the so-called Aristotelian-Ptolemaic world-system, repeatedly noticed by medieval astronomers, and an important motivation for the cosmological work of the sixteenth century, are suddenly made less surprising when one realises that Ptolemy had a philosophy of his own that was not quite Aristotelian. Helpful to all students of medieval and early-modern astronomy (particularly those who wish to understand the opening of Copernicus' De revolutionibus), this book is an essential companion to Ptolemy's own works, helping bring the author of the mathematically intimidating Syntaxis (or Almagest), the quirky Tetrabiblos, and even the list-based Geography to life. Clearly written, and clearly argued, it clearly belongs on your bookshelf.

If you are looking for a book about bears, keep looking. The word Grizzlies in the title is for marketing purposes. The book is essentially a chronicle of a couple settling in Knight Inlet, BC in the early 20th century as told to the author Beth Day in the 1950's. The book is ably written and entertaining, but is not about bears. The grizzlies have occasional cameo appearances, but don't even rate a co-starring role. There is nothing to be learned about bears here, just a light days read.

          Book Description

Two loners in a country town find cause for hope when one of them encounters a long-lost animal in this taut, shimmering tale by Sonya Hartnett about daring to live a life beyond expectations.

Ever since Dad went off the deep end and decided he didn't need to work anymore -- insisting the Lord would provide -- Satchel O'Rye has felt stuck for life in his dying country town. A high school dropout drifting from one small carpentry job to the next, Satchel can see nothing beyond his own dreary duty to help keep the family afloat. But things start to change when he spies a strange doglike animal at a nearby mountain -- and mentions the fact to Chelsea Piper, an awkward young woman considered the local pariah. Could the animal he saw be a Tasmanian tiger, a marsupial thought to be extinct? And if they found it again, could it give them both a new chance at life?

From the brilliant author of THURSDAY'S CHILD and WHAT THE BIRDS SEE comes a mesmerizing tale of a young man fighting his future, a young woman fighting her past, and a mysterious creature who teaches them something about survival.

3 out of 5 stars Captivating start - why'd you leave me hanging?.......2005-03-29

          By Dorothy Franks
Through the eyes of a teenage boy, Satchel, the end of the town is near. People are leaving; Satchel's best friend is leaving. This is not Satchel's main problom though. His father is becoming more sickly and depressed every day and his mother is working night shifts at the hospital with dry and cracked hands smashing pills for the injured. He has to get away on to the mountain away from the deteriating town. One day while up in the mountains to get away, Satchel spots a strange creature with stripes on its back, body like a cat, nose like a dog, and eyes and instincts of a lion. Satchel seeks the help of Chelsea in identifying it; the creature is an EXTINCT MARSUPIAL FROM AUSTRALIA! A thylacine that incidently is in the mountains in their town. Should Chelsea and Satchel tell anyone? It would bring back the life of the town. But what about the thylacine, its past of bounties and mast huntings to the point of "extinction".

Stripes of the sidestep wolf was a wonderful book; it had a fantastic beginning and middle, but the end oohhhhh. At the end I felt as though the author left me stranded in the middle of space. Now there are possible reasons- 1.That stopping there was a "just because it felt like a good spot" or 2. Sonya has in mind a sequal, though adding anything to this book would be hard.

3 out of 5 stars A sojurn in the Aussie wasteland of dry country.......2004-11-27

Deep in Australian outback country, one boy struggles to find his place. Mirroring his struggle is a creature who is native and yet out of place - glimpsed and dreamed of, but never conclusively seen.

He dreams of leaving the country and moving to the city, going to university, getting a job, anything to get away from the dry arid land, the father who won't communicate with him, and the futureless town.

It's a dry slow book, and although Sonya Hartnett manages to imbue it with the same mystical feeling of her other books, such as Thursday's Child or The Black Foxes, is is more like the former than the later.

          Interesting but not riviting.

This book covers some of the bases in regard to innovation - in particular it mentions the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, propounded by Everett Rogers among others. He gets a lot of mileage out of failures (such as New Coke and The Smokeless Cigarette) , under the general guise of "what were they thinking", and he clearly describes how foolish ideas can get backing from powerful, influential ideas and how other people then fall into the Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome.
There are a lot of good references in this book to successes, failures and studies relating to the Dot Com boom. One curious omission, in my view, is any reference to the work of Geoffrey Moore, whose work in the marketing of innovative technology products is a must-read for anyone trying to define the topic.

My basic impression of this book is that it is good on description, adequate in referring the reader to deeper, more original, material but very poor on analytical contribution.

4 out of 5 stars Practical commonsense for anyone involved in innovation.......2003-10-29

Why Innovation Fails is a practical guide reminding us of the many almost obvious reasons causing so many innovations to fail. The book is easy reading, and not academic. At first I was disappointed by this, but the book fits together well and has a seriously useful questionnaire at the end. The books uses examples from the dotcom bust and other modern ideas (the iPod is presented as an innovation that did work). It focuses on why people reject or aren't interested in technical innovation. The questionnaire, for example, asks the innovator to describe a typical early adopter, a typical late majority adopter and to ask what they each want from the innovation. This focus on the launch and growth phase of the product is typical of the book's emphasis on the consumer experience. There is some discussion of types of consumers (early adopters etc), and lots of summaries of key books in the area. My overall impression was that at my company, we need to use more common sense and get more customer research. The book is oddly positive, a message being that if innovations doomed to failure and spotted and killed earlier, more resources will be available for innovations that can succeed.

When I rate books, four stars is "highly recommended".

The author has mastered the art of suspenseful writing and can make any dry history exciting. There is an amazing amount of information in this small book, and it is as exciting to read as any historical fiction novel. I read the author's other book on the Monitor and in both books he amazed me by his ability to end a paragraph or chapter and keep me in suspense for the next.

          5 out of 5 stars A Truely Outstanding Work........1998-05-08

The Battle of Stonington is a book in a class by itself. It covers an obscure time and place in American history with a depth of detail and readability that recommend it to the serious scholar, the arm chair admiral, the general military buff and anyone who enjoys a good story.

DeKay writes in a fashion worthy of the best fiction. The Battle of Stonington may be described as a Tom Clancy novel written about the War of 1812. Like Clancy, DeKay writes with a high degree of both historic and techinical detail but, at the same time, creates enough dramatic tension to hold the attention of the reader.

There is, however, one key difference between DeKay and Clancy. DeKay's book is not fiction. Everything in the book is true. The persona dramatis range from immortal seafaring legends to humble but ingenious Yankee patriots. The story includes elements of duty, honor, ingenuity, courage, moral dilemas, patriotism and down right miracles.

How will a handful of militia men defend their homes and honor against five British warships commanded by a hero of the Battle of Trafalger with only three cannons? DeKay engroses the reader for page upon page of historic detail and mounting tension. Even the informed historian who knows the eventual outcome will gladly allow himself to be wrapped up in the story.

I exhort anyone with an interest in American military of naval history, or for that matter, any one who enjoy's a good yarn, to read this book. DeKay brings alive the stuff of which legends are made.

Can a small book by an obscure author possibly be this good? Read it for yourself and believe.

5 out of 5 stars It's the next best thing to being there.......1998-03-01

As a person who has spent a great portion of his life in the Borough of Stonington, a small colonial town in the southeast corner of Connecticut, it's difficult for me to imagine there being a book which could capture both my heart and mind to any greater degree than this one. For this is not simply a recollection of a long-forgotten battle in a relatively trivial arena, but the story of a small community struggling (and shining) through the onslaught of war. What amazes me most about this book is how clearly it paints a picture of an America in which our contemporary feelings of patriotism and national identity had not yet fully evolved. Stonington versus the British navy; Stonington versus New London (a city roughly 10 miles to the west); Americans versus Americans; a war seemingly on two fronts. This book completely shatters what little we have been taught about this war in the classroom. Contrary to mainstream beliefs on the subject, Mr. De Kay shows us a time and a place in which the war was just as much in our backyard as it was on our doorstep -- possibly even more so. In addition to the heroic displays of many Stoningtonians who successfully fought off what appears now to have been a somewhat half-hearted British bombardment, he shows us the less than heroic actions of numerous others who would have been more than happy to "go back" into the English fold and were not afraid to practice treachery to achieve this wish. And this is just one fascinating aspect to a book which is, overall, a truly wonderful read. Additionally, the author does a great job of introducing us to many of the area's inhabitants and showing us what life was like in that time. And his "coverage" of the particular battle in question is nothing short of remarkable. You feel as if you are there, fighting hand in hand alongside the people who you now know. In total, this book is astounding, and one which I highly recommend to anyone with a love for history. Far from being a textbook account, itis a very personal, digestible telling of a story we should, but don't, all already know about. And I am speaking not just for those of us with roots in New England, but for all Americans. For this, in a sense, is a microcosm of all of our histories. For we are all the product, at least to some degree, of our nation's past. Anyhow, this book is wel worth reading. It is as entertaining as a movie, with the factual content of a textbook........and well worth the admission price.

              Book Description

While most advanced industrial countries have adopted a liberal approach to the regulation of capital flow, the typical developing countries have been driven to control foreign exchange in order to prevent a flood of speculative capital inflow and retain domestic monetary resources for local development needs. This book examines the Taiwanese experience in balancing controls on foreign capital with domestic development needs in a manner that has stabilized the national economy and created a substantial trade surplus. Chich-Heng Kuo's position in the Taiwanese government enables him to provide an accurate analysis of the legal framework and policies that have contributed to his country's success. Kuo begins with a review of international capital flow patterns and suggests standards for national performance and capital markets that will enable policymakers to evaluate the costs and benefits of foreign exchange controls. His appraisal of the role of capital regulation in Taiwanese economic development indicates that encouragement of foreign direct investment and strict controls on outward capital flow have been key factors in creating a strong economy. Kuo describes the gradual reversal of these policies starting in 1986, when Taiwan had begun to accumulate large foreign exchange reserves and needed to focus on foreign investment abroad to cool down inflationary pressures at home. The final chapter explores possible applications for economic development in other countries. Providing legal and policy analysis as well as information on the impact of specific types of regulations, this case study will be useful to policymakers, professionals, and scholars concerned with international trade, capital, and economic development.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2007-08-25

This book has taught me alot about horse racing, and had definitely aided in my enjoyment of the sport and helped me win some money! There are some chapters that are a little boring with unnecessary info.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent For Starters.......2007-06-30

I gave this as a gift to my mother before several trips to the races, and after completing it, I was pleased to find she was doing basic handicapping correctly. This book doesn't get deep into hard-core handicapping, but for most people who enjoy the races as an occasional fun day out, it puts all those numbers in the program or the racing form into perspective... making for a more enjoyable experience! Well done.

5 out of 5 stars And Down The Stretch You Come, With Betting Knowledge.......2007-02-20

With the Kentucky Derby about one week away, it will be like NCAA March Madness where even the casual of sports fans is going to have an opinion on the outcome.

But maybe you will want to take that opinion one step further and place a bet at the local race track or OTB that's simulcasting the race. This book will help you learn the nomenclature associated with wagering on the races and the nuances to betting.

Author Richard Eng guides the reader through the basic bets like win, place and show, but really earns high marks by delving into the exotic bets - like exactas, trifectas and superfectas - where betting the same money as you would on the traditional trio may yield much higher payouts.

The book is not how to handicap races, which is the art or reading a racing form or researching with other material to select runners for your various bets. It purely focuses on understanding what bets are possibly available for the races at your local tracks or on the simulcasts.

And with confidence, you'll be able to march up to the teller and state - for the record - "In race five I'd like an exacta box with with 2 and the 6," just like a pro. And through the help of Eng you will certainly understand it just as well or better than that "expert" who's next in line.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the target audience: "Dummies".......2006-11-29

This is a great book for the absolute begginner, first time track experince. For the enthusiastic hobbyist like myself the book only gets two stars.

I thought the pull out cheat sheet in the front of the book was irresponsible, suggesting a sixteen dollar play for the pick 6. I believe two dollars is okay, because it's like buying a lottery ticket, however a minuim of a 128.00 is needed. Anything else is just throwing away money. The suggested amount for the superfecta and pick 4 were off base too.

The book was very hard to read, as it seemed like every chapter the author was just saying the same thing over and over again. Although the book explains to the reader the different types of handicapping methods, it does not teach you how to handicap. Remember the book title is "Betting on Horse Racing" not "Handicapping on Horse Racing".

Now for what I liked about the book. Great glossary and index, something that all horse racing books that I've read lacked. I enjoyed chapter 17, which covered handicapping tournaments. This is something I've never tackled and find interesting after reading. Chapters 19 and 20 covered Harness racing and Quarter horses. I prefer throughbreds because I understand it and find it more enjoyable, but if I ever decide to bet on these types of races I will refer to these chapters. Chapter 25, the ten best race tracks to visit, was also interesting. I'm fortunate to have two of these in my back yard, and in the future I would like to visit the authors other eight picks.

I bought this book after I selected another book and needed to spend more to avoid the three dollars shipping and handling. So factoring that in 10.59 was not a bad price. The amazon advertised 13.59 is'nt bad either, however I would not purchase the book for the suggested 19.99 cover price (not worth it).

In all, good book to have for begginers. Also a good book to have for experinced horesplayers who have non horse playing friends that want to tag along. Much easier to let them borrow the book over night then to have them harrassing you at the track like a little kid with thier questions.

The other do it yourself series KISS and Complete Idiots Guide do not have books on this subject, instead there covered in chapters of other books. KISS Guide to Gambling, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gambling Like a Pro, respectfully.

5 out of 5 stars Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies.......2006-05-10

I found this book to be just excellent. After being invited to the Kentucky Derby by some folks who own a Kentucky horse farm started in 1867, I wanted to learn more about racing and betting before I went. I was a complete novice, having been to Saratoga several times betting on horses with cool sounding names and always losing. The book goes through everything you need to know about racing and betting. Not only did I win several races before the Derby, but I actually won the Derby with a bet on Barbaro! I made quite a reputation for myself as a handicapper!
