      Book Description

Environmental and agricultural modeling and assessment have a multitude of uses for soil parameters governing retention and transport of water and chemicals in soils. These parameters are notorious for the difficulties and high labor costs involved in measuring them. Good estimates instead of direct measurements may be accurate enough for many applications. Pedotransfer functions provide such estimates by utilizing available soil survey information to translate data we have into data we need.

This book is the first book on the topic. It provides the unique compendium of pedotransfer functions, summarizes the vast international experience in this field, and shows how the value of soil data can be increased by using them in pedotransfer functions to predict soil hydrologic and related properties. The book is a rich source of information crucial for environmental research and applications.

        Book Description

At the farthest reaches of theoretical physics, the line between science and spirituality becomes increasingly blurred. Most books which deal with that blurring line look at spirituality from the standpoint of cutting-edge science- looks at science from the standpoint of cutting-edge spirituality. Brian Hines envisions a time when religion will be less a matter of faith than of direct evidence that ultimate reality is indeed One and nonmaterial. Well-reasoned and insightful this book points toward a new perception of the reality we all share. Brian Hines has a master's degree in social work and two years of doctoral training in Systems Science. He is an initiate of the path of Surat Shabd Yoga (union of soul and spirit) and an avid student of Shotokan Karate.

3 out of 5 stars preaching to the choir.......2003-03-02

I found myself data mining this book. That is the process of reading in order to collect quotes, to get pieces of information to store or to use in other venues. I don't often fall into this mistake with books, i try to be careful and take the writing in a open spirit and grasp what the author is trying to say. This data mining breaks the connection between an author and a reader, i don't like it. Why it happened is the weakness of the book, it is truely preaching to the choir. It assumes such a relationship with the world that if you are unaware, or unable to practice the author's particular style of spiritual discipline that the book becomes disjoined.

Certainly he is not intending it that way. He tries carefully to set the groundwork for his spiritual practices, but like he says, they are things to be done, not things to be thought. And that's what makes the book an excellent place for data mining. He is aware of much spirituality and sees the interconnection of modern science, especially leading edge physics to this spiritual realm. So that you are able to get much information out of the book, without participating in the author's real desire, his real reason for writing the book.

The author desires, deeply and sensitively, for the reader to follow him into another realm of contemplative spiritual awareness. He has a well written chapter about the need for good competent guides into the field, so he knows a book is not sufficent, but he tries as this is really the only chance he has to help you into his world. And i am sorry to say that this is not enough to help me see or understand the deeper things he proposes in the book.

However that said, it is a good book, tone and stylistically superior to much in the field, dominated as it is by unreadable and unfollowable junk. Maybe it is simply that the spiritual, the comtemplative requires a guide who can interact and see where you are in the journey and tailor the message to you. There are many nuggets and pieces to held in the mind and added to your database of thought. For this alone it is worth the time, knowing that since your aren't a member of his choir you are really missing the true meaning and significance of the book.

thanks for reading this review, i hope you get more out of it than i did, but don't let my failure discourage you from trying. You perhaps are on a journey more like his and his words might very well inflame your contemplative passions, for i can see them in him, i just can't feel the heat of them.

        5 out of 5 stars =U N I T Y=.......2001-01-09

This is VERY well thought out book about knowing the Ultimate Reality. Mysticism and Physics are both aiming for it, that same Universal Truth. But it can be found through contemplative meditation. This helps me alot in my Baha'i views, not just in uniting God and his religions, but science and religions. They are all varied and vast sides of a mountain with but one peak. That peak is not just some supreme being, but being itself. God is his creation, but not just that. (i.e. not pantheism) True "perfect" mystics all know the same pristine reality that is viewed as something different by the sectarian religions that stem from it. This is also parallel to Baha'i beliefs in the Divine Manifestations all emanating from the one united God. Everything is unity. There are alot of other scientific and philosophical issues looked at by the author. From Quantum Cosmology and the Big Bang to clearing up free will and determinism, at the same time connecting it to Karma. Though this does not answer each and every question you'll have of the Ultimate Truth (it didn't for me atleast, there is stuff that I wish I could ask the author), its perspective is a key to your universal understanding, and that would be: monism. This book is a good choice as your first step back home: divine Light and Unity.

O, yea, and its pages are riddled with beautiful verse from a perfect mystic--Rumi. His message is one that you will find uplifting. =¤)

5 out of 5 stars The excellent book for anyone having sceintific background........1998-07-04

this book is among the best which compares mysticism with science. the logic of correlation is simply superb. the author has done a quite good survey and has very good insight. thanks for writing such an excellent book.

I enjoyed the book for the most part, as it gave some insights into the greatness of the man, Fred Bear, his human side, and so on. Somehow it seemed to read a little too much like an autobiography of the author, it seemed to me.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting Tribute to a Great Man.......2007-01-18

If you have never heard of this man and you are an archer or bowhunter in the United States this book is a must read. If you are like myself and had a father whose hero was Fred Bear then you will learn even more about him. Dick's closeness with PB over the years truely shows as does the love he had for Fred Bear. I personally read this book and cried when I got to the UAW strike, Last Moments, and Eulogies of this great man. He did so much for archery, wildlife, bowhunting, and the world he deserves his own holiday. But he wouldn't think he deserved one cause he was to humble of a man. It is interesting to learn exactly what Fred had Lattimer doing for him all those years at Bear archery. Lattimer is truly lucky to have been thrown in with such a lot. Even if they did like to play jokes on him.

        Regards,
        Samuel Ervin

This map is in a handy format and it is water proofed. It contains 6 different maps, which show you different parts of the town. But the problem is, that the map doesn't show the busses and subway lines, just the cable car lines. It were really useful, because so you can use your cheap MUNI card for public transportation and your map to discover this great town.

I would recommand the Let's Go Map, because the map shows you the public transportation.

T.J. Nucci may not be the best player at basketball camp, but he knows how to work the system. He even knows how to handle his buddy Tyron, who's got talent but not brains. If T.J. can help the college recruiters who want a piece of Tyron, the recruiters will help T.J. -- it's only fair, right?

But not all the people T.J. encounters that summer are what they seem to be. Street agents, scouts, coaches, and players: everyone's selling something different. Then T.J. meets LuAnn, a troubled girl from the bible camp across the river. She says she's been saved, but her smiles mask a desperation that leads to tragedy. Suddenly T.J.'s not so sure of his own choices anymore.

What's it all about? Can T.J. learn to play the power game and come out on top...or is he just another pawn?

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Basketball Scouting.......2007-07-06

T.J. and his best friend Tyron, both high-school students, are on their way to an elite summer basketball camp, where they will have a chance to play with other great athletes and hopefully Tyron will impress the college scouts who have already expressed some interest in him.

Nobody will be interested in seeing T.J. play. Although he has been invited to the camp, he is really only there to act as Tyron's advocate. Tyron is a great ballplayer, but he has a very low IQ and lives in a group home without any parents, and T.J. has taken it upon himself to guide his friend through the process of winning a basketball scholarship and choosing a college.

At camp, T.J. is disturbed by the corruption and rule-breaking he sees, and especially be the presence of street agents--guys who dole out free gear in an attempt to get close to the players and land a position on their bankrolls. T.J. begins to worry that he is just as much of a leech, pushing Tyron toward college scouts for his own good, instead of Tyron's.

Across the way from basketball camp is a Bible camp, and in between the two camps T.J. meets LuAnn, who glorifies putting her life into God's hands. T.J. thinks it's a bad idea, to simply let someone else make decisions for you, like the religious camp leaders do for LuAnn. But is he doing the same thing for Tyron?

I liked this glimpse into the murky and potentially exploitative world of college basketball recruitment. However, I thought this story had some gaps. I would have liked to have had more information about Tyrone's and T.J.'s pasts. They obviously knew each other as kids, as T.J. kept using Tyron's childhood nickname, but that relationship was never clarified.

I really didn't like T.J.'s character, either. I was irritated every time he faked an injury, and it seems like his coaches would have been able to see through this ploy. I also didn't like that he dropped responsibility for Tyron so easily. Tyron would have been lost by himself, and it wasn't fair for T.J. to handle everything for so long, then just suddenly quit.

2 out of 5 stars Blue Star Rapture.......2004-11-09

I didn't like this book as much as I've liked others. Probably, because of the religion issue involved throughout the story. TJ, the main character in the story, basically rejects it, and will have nothing to do with anyone from the neighboring religious camp. While TJ is at a high caliber basketball camp, complete with the college scouts, he spends a lot of his time on a bridge separating Full Court, and a bible camp. While there one day he meets a girl named Luanne. Luanne is from the bible camp, and he continually interrogates her with sarcastic questions that just harass her and her faith. I really don't like that aspect of the story. He goes on to realize that he has been slacking in the games, and steps it up to his potential, which is an exciting part in the story. At the end, when Luanne commits suicide, TJ blames the camps motivational speaker, a strong religious woman for the accident. It's just really negative about religion and God, and I didn't like that aspect of the story. Unfortunately, that also brings down the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Star Rapture.......2004-05-12

"Blue star Rapture" takes place at Heavens Gate, which is a big farm that consists of 2 camps. One being Full Court basketball camp, which the majority of the book takes place at. The other camp is a holy roller by the name of camp Shaddai.

The main character T.J. is a 17 year old who is attending full court camp for one major reason. To help his friend Tyron get a basketball scholarship. In the book Tyron is not very smart and T.J. is the only person who really understands him, which is critical when talking to scouts and coaches. T.J. also feels if he helps the scouts with Tyron maybe he will be rewarded with some sort of scholarship or grant.

T.J. also has some unexpected problems when he gets to camp such as this girl Luann.Luann is a teenager at camp Shaddai who gets knocked up by a strange man and decided to turn her life over to god. The only problem with this is the people at the camp dont look out for what's best, They follow whatever they believe god is trying to tell them even if it could turn into tradegy for other people.

Overall "Blue Star Rapture" was a terrific book and i highly suggest that you go out and buy this book. It's a book for all ages and I hope you enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Blue Stars for this book........2004-05-12

Blue Star Rapture is a book about 2 friends (T.J. and Tyron) in High School, that are going through the basketball recruiting process. They have been best friends throughout their lives and have experienced a lot, going to Full Court basketball camp is just another experience that T.J. and Tyron go through together.
The story told in the eyes of T.J. (the main character) gives his view of what is going on in his basketball life and personal life. T.J. basically goes to "Full Court" to keep Tyron company and to watch out for him. While there he tries to impress scouts that are interested in Tyron, and not T.J.
While at "Full Court" T.J. meets a girl from a near by Bible Camp named LuAnn. He is interested in her but doesn't get too involved. LuAnn makes T.J. think about things he has never thought about before. They are opposites of each other and their relationships is awkward.
The basketball recruiting process gets heated and scholarships are on the line for both T.J. and Tyron. Throughout the book Tyron doesn't take his actions too serious, so read the book to see what happens.
This book shows the mental and physical toughness people may have to go through to get something. Also see what happens when things progress between both T.J. and LuAnn from Bible Camp. Not everyone goes through scouting experiences, and reading this book will give you that opportunity.

1 out of 5 stars Boring Star Rapture.......2004-05-11

Blue Star Rapture was a dull and predictable book with no twists or turns. It did not make you want to keep reading. It was all about basketball and other events that took place in TJs life. The things they were saying about college basketball recruiting is common knowledge to people that follow sports. There was basically no ending to the book, but I think the author did this on purpose to let you finish the book for yourself. But by the time you finish the book it is so mind-numbing you don't even want to finish it for yourself.
The book is based around two people TJ and Tyron who both attend school and play basketball together. Tyron is the star basketball player who is being recruited by numerous different colleges. TJ is his best friend who also plays basketball, but is not nearly as good as Tyron. TJ keeps a log on Tyron for all of the college offers he gets either by mail or phone calls. Some coaches don't even talk to Tyron they just go right to TJ because Tyron has a learning disorder and they know Tyron will do whatever TJ tells him to do.

            Book Description

In this book, ten authors from nine East Asian countries reexamine the East Asian miracle and the subsequent economic meltdown in an attempt to discover a reliable path toward recovery for the region. In their search for a healthy recovery in both economic and human security terms, the authors consider such issues as the roles of domestic and international governance during the periods of prosperity and crisis. "Good governance" that delivers the economic goals of stability, competitiveness, growth, and resilience as well as the social goals of poverty alleviation, better income and wealth distribution, employment, and social safety nets is essential to the establishment of a sustainable system of development for the region. Sustainable development at both the domestic and regional levels is subject to political and social constraints, the limit of natural resources, and the vagaries of capital flows and the financial system. With the benefit of hindsight, the authors suggest ways to apply the lessons learned from the East Asian miracle and meltdown to achieve a more secure way of life for the inhabitants of the region. Contributors: Syarisa Yanti Abubakar, Malaysian Institute of Economic Research; Dante Canlas, University of the Philippines; Adis Israngkura, National Institute of Development Administration, Thailand; Jung Ku-Hyun, Yonsei University, South Korea; Takashi Kiuchi, Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan; Wisarn Pupphavesa, National Institute of Development Administration, Thailand; Leonard Sebastian, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore; Sheng Hong, Institute of Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Hadi Soesastro, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Indonesia.

                  Book Description

Nations Unbound is a pioneering study of an increasing trend in migration-transnationalism. Immigrants are no longer rooted in one location. By building transnational social networks, economic alliances and political ideologies, they are able to cross the geographic and cultural boundaries of both their countries of origin and of settlement. Through ethnographic studies of immigrant populations, the authors demonstrate that transnationalism is something other than expanded nationalism. By placing immigrants in a limbo between settler and visitor, transnationalism challenges the concepts of citizenship and of nationhood itself.

                    Book Description

This book presents a study on the economic relations between interwar Germany and the United States. As the political agenda of Nazi Germany grew to diverge from the agenda of the U.S. and other democratic countries, an important question began to evolve. How far could this political and economic compatibility, or incompatibility, be stretched? And what would such compatibilities hold for the contemporary "global economy", and, presumably, global democracy, between nation states?
