Still relevant.......2007-05-13
Though Asian agriculture may not seem to be of interest to all, this book offers anyone who likes to grow things a look at logical simplicity in the use of land--permaculture at its best. It also adds to the history of the world, by providing obscure details about farming-village life, and many photos. Every culture has wisdom to pass on to another, and this book also features the cultural quirks and foibles alongside the logic.
Book Description
This book reviews the approach to the kinetic simulation of nonequilibrium processes in the planetary atmospheres which the authors developed and have dealt with since the 1970s. The results of this study, which are focused on the nonequilibrium collisional processes in the atmospheres of planets and comets, are thoroughly reviewed and discussed. Many specific problems of atmospheric modeling, involving numerical simulation of aeronomic processes, are addressed and compared with the available experimental data. The kinetic approach proved to be especially effective in modelling the interaction of the incident shortwave solar radiation with the rarefied gas of planetary upper atmospheres. It involves various processes of photolysis, energetic particle impacts, and numerous accompanying chemical reactions. The underlying mathematical treatment is based on the stochastic approach for the solution of the Boltzmann-type equation and implies the development of efficient algorithms for its computer simulation. New or upgraded methods and algorithms for addressing the relevant problems of non-equilibrium gas kinetics were developed and successfully implemented for the simulation of a wide range of aeronomical processes. This book is intended for professional scholars and graduate students in space sciences, planetary astronomy and aeronomy and will also be useful to some target groups dealing with mechanics, gas dynamics, and computer modeling of versatile physical processes and who wish to expand the areas of their immediate interests.

An excellent look back at tourmaline mining in San Diego County.......2005-07-31
This book is the personal history of the adventures of Fred Rynerson, one of the early tourmaline miners of San Diego County. Although he did not have a lot of formal education, he was a very intelligent man who had a keen eye for geology and for people. This is one of my all-time favorite books--if you have any interest at all in pegmatites or what conditions were like in early twentieth century southern California, I highly recommend this book.
Fred J. Rynerson ý Gemstone Mining & Lapidary Pioneer.......2003-05-04
There are certain books that seem to bring words to life, inspiring visions of the way things were, and the way things ought to be. Exploring and Mining Gems and Gold in the West - documents the personal history of Frederick James Rynerson, and his experiences during the boom years of San Diego's colored gemstone trade in the early 20th Century (ca 1900-1914). This book includes important photographs of the mines and people who helped make San Diego a global epicenter for Tourmaline. One of my all-time favorites!

Book Description
For baseball fans young, old, and in between, the ultimate guide to the new statistical thinking that's revolutionizing the game.
The revolution in baseball statistics that began in the 1970s is a controversial subject that professionals and fans alike argue over without end. Despite this fundamental change in the way we watch and understand the sport, until now no one had written the book that reveals, across every area of strategy and management, how the best practitioners of statistical analysis in baseball think about numbers and the game.
Baseball Between the Numbers is that book. In separate chapters covering every aspect of the game, the experts at the Baseball Prospectus examine the subtle, hidden aspects of baseball, bring them out into the open, and show us how our favorite teams could win more games. This is a book that every fan, every follower of sports radio, every fantasy player, every coach, and every player at every level can enjoy and learn from.
Customer Reviews:
loved it.......2007-09-21
I do not subscribe to the Prospectus, so I found this book to be incredibly fascinating. So much so I have passed it around to several friends who have also found it fascinating.
Although one can say a great many things with stats, this book presents some surprisingly sound arguments against many commonly held beliefs. ( and had a couple I don't necessarily agree with but that doesn't make the book wrong) I do admit that a couple of the chapters I didn't care about and therefore glossed over, but still I give the book a excellent review overall.
Thanks to this book, I, and several of my friends, now call Derek Jeter "Pastadiving". You'll just have to read that chapter.
A new way to look at old strategies.......2007-09-05
I've watched baseball since I was a kid 40 years ago. I'd heard of Bill James and kind of knew about saberemetrics, but had never taken the time to learn anything about the new numbers.
This book was a great introduction. The concepts are explained well, and all are tied to real world examples I could understand so it wasn't like reading a statistical treatise.
Some of the concepts confirmed things I already knew, like how silly it is to rely on batting averages. Then there were other topics, like why it's not always a good idea to bunt that I had heard other people espouse, but conflicted with my traditional baseball thinking. After reading the chapter on it, I'm convinced.
Finally, one of the things I most enjoyed about the book was the many ways they compared current stars to former stars and current teams to past teams. That's one of the richest areas of baseball debate, and it's always been totally subjective. And it gets a little stranger when people arguing for the 1930s Yankees are two generations removed from ever seeing them play. But the authors lay out very reasonable statistical measures of how to compare players and teams across time. It certainly won't end debate--this is baseball we're talking about. But it adds a splendid new dimension.
Five Stars for Content.......2007-08-13
Nice book and just what I needed so I now know why I can not make sense out of the baseball business that is so much about what we see on field now. And why baseball is no longer my grandparents or parents game of baseball. We will all lose interest even with a book explaining why and how about what and what is really what about baseball and what most influences the game besides playing a decent game of baseball for the fans and followers of a game that use to be a game enjoyed not a game that has to be enjoyed because of investments. The investment in the price of a ticket and a day at the ballpark is the fan's investment. No longer affordable because everyone deserves to be huge personalities making millions yearly. Just like we all should be multi-millionaires by now. Most people making money off of baseball have never stepped a foot on the field and probably only check in occasionally to check up on their money.
So we all will be just as saddened about what baseball is now and wait for it to end while giving our attention to the next sport that begins before the baseball season ends. What began as not a kid's game but a professional game for adults and what adults could enjoy and be entertained by is now like most of what influences our daily lives IT IS all about the BIG money supporting a game and process that use to give us all great games of baseball and an outing with friends or family.
The fun and enjoyment is almost all gone when the game became untrustworthy and dishonest and only credit card affordable.
A game of baseball is where we could escape to and find some enjoyment and not worry about being scammed. The enjoyment of baseball is almost gone, so very sad and unnecessary. I wanted this book so I could see the facts. Business is business and baseball business is the same.
Now our cherished pastime, national game is nothing more and mostly nothing more that BIG BUSINESS and becoming exclusive and what was once for all Americans, has become like so much else only for those who can afford to be Americans.
GREAT BASEBALL BOOK.......2007-06-27
I bought this book for my husband, a true baseball fanatic, and he loves it.
There is more to the game than a boxscore.......2007-05-27
Some of us like to actually watch and enjoy the game of baseball. Baseball Prospectus and their attempted empire do their best to ruin the enjoyment of watching games and players.
The title of this book is so incredibly arrogant. They want us to ignore pitcher's wins and runs batted in as if they are totally meaningless. I do not turn my nose at a twenty game winner, nor do I ignore that fact that some players considered knocking in baserunners to be an important accomplishment. In fact, Hank Greenberg often chided Charlie Gehringer for clearing the bases and not leaving any for him.
Instead, they offer complex formulae that tell us who we should consider to be the best. If I prefer Mays over Mantle or A-Rod over Jeter, I do not want someone to come along and give me their definitive answer.
What these pencil necked geeks refuse to admit, as anyone who plays with numbers knows, is that the answer is frequently set when you set up the parameters. No matter what BP says, they cannot answer whether good pitching beats good hitting. It cannot and should not be resolved.

"What do you do when you're too smart for the freaks, but too much of a freak for the smart kids?" This is the question Rachel asks herself daily as she walks down the halls of her high school observing the strange rituals of the "TV Girls," "People from Planet Mensa," and the "Net Jockeys." Rachel couldn't care less that she doesn't fit in. As far as she's concerned, the only things she needs to survive are her volunteer work at the local animal shelter and her writing. Until she meets the feral collie she christens Grrl. To others at the shelter, Grrl seems completely untamable. But Rachel sees her own fury and frustration mirrored in the dog's deep brown eyes, and she is determined to domesticate Grrl. Inspired by the outlaw dog, Rachel's writing takes off, and she is even coaxed into sharing it with "Griffin Lost Boy," another creative loner like herself. But giving her story a happy ending and providing one for Grrl in real life are two totally different things, and no matter how strong Rachel thinks she is, she may not be strong enough to handle the truth about Grrl.
Weighing in at just over one hundred pages, this slim tome nevertheless packs a powerful emotional wallop. While angry, abused Grrl may seem like an obvious metaphor for the angry adolescent experience, author Kathe Koja's short, choppy sentences where both girl and Grrl snarl and snap at the world are well executed and inventive. Take this Straydog home from the pound immediately. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Rachel is happiest when she's volunteering at the animal shelter, especially after she meets the feral collie she names Grrl; they're both angry and alone. When a teacher encourages her to write about it, Rachel finds another outlet for her pain and frustration. But writing about Grrl is much easier than teaching Grrl to trust her. And when Griffin, the new boy in school, devises a plan to spring Grrl from the shelter and bring her home, Rachel finds that the dog isn't the only one who must learn to trust.

Stray dog.......2005-02-14
This book is about a girl named Rachel and she volunteers
At an animal shelter. She meets a dog and she calls it Grr. She is sad and she doesn't have many friends so that's when she starts working at the dog pound.
She likes it and she plays with it. The next day she goes down there she helps with what she has to do and when she gets finished she gets to play with the dogs and she picks `grr'
A very fine read for young adults and those older........2004-08-06
You know, I'm not a big fan of Kathe Koja, despite having read most of her works. Her subject matter and writing style usually rub me the wrong way, like in "Skin" and "Strange Angels," too books I very much disliked. However, "Straydog" is a much stronger and different work.
Koja eschews her usual over-the-top melodrama for a more restrained tale that resonates very strongly in truth. 'Straydog" is about a very cynical high school girl named Rachel who doesn't like much in life besides taking care of animals and writing. She isn't full of self-pity though, she's a sharply sarcastic and biting one, full of life. She meets a dog who animal officials at the shelter she works at declare is a lost cause, much too violent, but she is determined to rehabilitate it and upon the encouragement of her teacher, decides to write about the process through the dog's point of view. She also meets an outsider, a boy named Griffin, who helps her in this task.
The whole "story within a story" aspect of this slim book works very well, and each level is written smartly and with a minimum of flashy, unnecessary pretenses by Koja. There are very smart viewpoint and tone changes from the book Koja is writing to when it becomes the passages that Koja is writing that Rachel is writing through the view of the dog. A very clean transition that makes the whole thing believable.
To sum up my feelings, this book doesn't really hit any of the false notes that many of Koja's other works do, and I think it has something pretty useful to impart to all of its readers, not always the same for each reader. I would definitely recommend this book, it's a quick and smart read.
Refreshingly different!.......2004-07-23
This is my absolute favorite book. Rachel is most definitely not one of those dry protagonists with no emotions or opinions, and this novel is not the typical animal rescue book, in which a girl finds a distrusting stray, takes it home, and in two weeks has trained it perfectly. It is sad, but has a powerful message and was written skillfully so that the reader goes through all the thoughts and emotions that Rachel has. This a great read for dog lovers, but also people who have yet to learn that special bond that never dies in Rachel.
132+.......2003-10-22
I thought this book was very well written. It is about this girl who is angry and feels trapped, and with no friends at all. She then befriends a collie mix at the animal shelter were she works. But the dog is feral and she has to try and teach the dog (which she named Grrl, sort of like a growl or the way she is feeling)to trust again, but in doing so she has broken out of her own cage and looks at the world and the people in it a different way. It is a very touching story about trust, faith, and courage. Showing the reader to belive and keep going, no matter how over grown the path or how the way may seem flodded or untouchable, that some day it will all come together and the sun will come shining through to reveal a a kinder much better way through the twisted and some what scary path of life. Keep believing don't hide who you are, because your true character will be found. I hope that people who enjoy a good book and likes these stories will pick this up and read it.
Oh and if you are wondering why my title is the way it is, because my cat had stepped on the keyboard and so that came up, I don't know how but it has meaning to it. Thank you.
A great read.......2003-10-21
Straydog is a great book if you need to have a quick read. I enjoyed it the whole way i was reading it. I recomend it to poeple that are animals lovers and maybe work or help out at an animal shelter. The book can inspire someone to maybe save a animals life at the shelter or off the street. This book is a great book and i loved it the whole way. It is sad, inserational, and happy all at the same time!

An Invaluable Research Tool!.......2004-05-05
This book is a highly detailed and simply invaluable research tool for writers, historians, teachers, etc. Some books give you a quick sampling -- ie, bread cost so much, milk cost so much, a car cost so much -- without giving you any more specifics or backing up their stated facts with sources. But THE VALUE OF A DOLLAR digs deeper, giving you comparisons (high end cars, low end cars), plus charts of how much people in various professions made (while Elvis made ten million in one year in the '50's, a secretary with typing and shorthand typically earned around $85 a week). You can check out the grocery section to see how fruits, vegetables, and all household staples stacked up against a person's basic salary and how much of their income went for basic necessities -- or look at the cost of entertainments (movies, theater tickets, sporting events, games) in any particular era. Simply fascinating reading, carefully documented (columns typically list which publications the prices or salaries came from). If you're a writer of any kind of history or historian of any kind, don't be without it!
GREAT BOOK.......2000-09-12
IT IS A GREAT BOOK. I USED IT FOR MY SCHOOL, ON A HISTORY PROJECT I FOUND EVERY THING I NEEDED IN FROM THE YEARS OF1955-1989-1999 I RECOMEND IT TO ALL PEOPLE!

Book Description
to do with the calling of loons, with northern lights, and the great silences of land lying northwest of Lake Superior. It is concerned with the simple joys, the timelessness and perspective found in a way of life which is close to the past. I have heard the singing in many places, but I seem to hear it best in the wilderness lake country of the Quetico-Superior, where travel is still by pack and canoe over the ancient trails of the Indians and voyageurs." Thus the author sets the theme and tone of this enthralling book of discovery about one of the few great primitive areas in our country which have withstood the pressures of civilization.
Acute natural perceptivity and a profound knowledge of the relationships to be found in nature combine here in vivid evocations of the sights, the sounds, the vast stillnesses, and the events of the wilderness as the seasons succeed each other. But Mr. Olson is not content merely to "describe; he probes for meanings that will lead the reader to a different and more revealing way of looking at the out-of-doors and to a deeper sense of its eternal values. In each of the thirty-four chapters of The Singing Wilderness he has sought to capture an essential quality of our magnificent lake and forest heritage. He shows us what can be read from the rocks of the great Canadian Shield; he offers a delightful essay on the virtues of pine knots as fuel; he writes of the ways of a canoe, of flashing trout in the pools of the Isabella, of tamarack bogs, caribou moss, the flight of wild geese, timber wolves, and the birds of the ski trails. And much more, with something to satisfy every taste for wilderness experience.
Superbly illustrated with 38 black-and-white drawings by Francis Lee Jaques, The Singing Wilderness is a book that no lover of nature will want to be without. To anyone who contemplates a vacation in the lake country of northern Minnesota and adjoining Canada, it is the perfect vade mecum.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone should see this place!.......2004-08-07
Noted conservationist Sigurd F. Olson wrote this collection of essays about his years canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing and fishing the Wilderness areas of Superior National Forest and the Quetico of Canada.
The essays are organized according to the four seasons. Olson has an almost metaphysical relationship with the animals that live in the wilderness: red squirrels, loons, otters, even field mice are fellow travelers.
Olson canoes and portages scores of miles to listen to the loons sing on Lac La Croix. He searches hundreds of lakes, looking for the perfect wilderness area, unspoiled by civilization. And he finds it! Saganaga, "a symbol of the primitive, perfect and untouched." Later, he hears that a road has come to Saganaga and he ventures back to see what's been done to it. It seems the same until he rounds a bend and is confronted with a modern lodge. He's conflicted; he wants human companionship but he doesn't want to lose his "singing wilderness."
In another essay, he tells of "flying in" to one of the lakes, rather than spending days canoeing and portaging to get there. He feels disoriented and can't really appreciate the experience. He hasn't put in enough effort; he doesn't deserve it. And he never does this again.
Olson is a sentimental, nostalgic man. He tells of catching trout for his grandmother, whom he credits with instilling a love of nature. While fishing on the Manitou, he is confronted with an eighty-year-old trout fisherman who's come to his favorite fishing spot for one last time.
Olson also limns essays that show the brutality of nature. In "The Storm" we see white-throated sparrows, Killdeers, purple finches, chickadees, and robins returning to the wilderness area after a long and brutal winter. Olson is marveling at their music until snow begins the fall and the temperature plummets. Thousands of confused birds freeze to death.
Admittedly, there is some clunky writing in the SINGING WILDERNESS; one gets the impression that Olson is writing from memory in a lot of instances. Also, at times he doesn't tell you where he is: he refers to the "lake" as if we should know which one of the thousands in the Superior/Quetico wilderness he's referring to. There's also a dearth of people. Often, he refers to "we" but the person or persons he's with are invisible.
That said, I think everyone would benefit from reading these essays. I couldn't help but wonder how many people know this place exists. These days the area is called the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness. No motor boats allowed; no ATVs allowed! Everyone should see it at least once in his/her lifetime.
have you heard.......2003-02-20
great book for outdoor enthusiasts. bet you find something you can relate to and some you realize you overlooked
The true Boundary Waters.......2002-09-04
This book is my favorite! It describes all the feelings common to those who have visited canoe country and will never forget it. Sigurd Olson's writing is so clear and descriptive, you'll feel like you're in the Boundary Waters every time you pick it up. Everyone who has visited the Boundary Waters or ever plans on doing so, not to mention all the other nature lovers out there, should read this book. I don't know how many times I've read it and it seems to get better every time.
_Walden_ for Minnesotans.......2002-01-07
Originally published in 1956, this classic still speaks to nature lovers today, and it deserves to share the same shelf with Thoreau, Muir, and Beston. Olson's essays convey the spirit and sense of place in what is now known as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area -- Superior National Forest in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. North country life is special, and Olson obviously loved living there. He writes with delight of seeing Northern Lights, portaging canoes, cross country skiing, hearing the echoes of loons calling, and witnessing the occasional mouse tobogganing off a tent roof. Though the chapters are organized by seasons and begin with Spring, it is the essence of cold and snow and winter that carries the reader through the book. Best to be read by a warm fireplace with a light snow falling outside and a mug of hot chocolate nearby.
Gift With a Promise.......2001-11-08
I first spent time in the Quetico when I was fourteen with my dad. Two months before we left he gave me a book called "The Singing Wilderness". He said read the essay called "silence" and you will understand why this place is special. When I returned from the trip I continued to read it. I've read it a lot during winters and in the weeks leading up to trips into the wilderness canoe area north-west of lake Superior. Every time I endulge myself in it I'm taken back to a place, where despite having lasted through decades of change to the surrounding world, it offers a first hand history lesson. This book captures a small part of the beauty of the Quetico which means(I was told by park people there) beautiful land with trecherous waters that everyone should have the chance to experience.
