This volume brings together some of the best writing published in the journal Management Learning since its re-launch under this title in 1994. The selection very much reflects the mission of the journal to act as a showcase for innovative, international and interdisciplinary work which covers a wide gamut of issues connected to management, organizations, learning and knowledge. This National Research Council report reviews the current status of the plant, which is now fast progressing from its wild state to commercial production of impressive magnitude. In particular, the intention is to highlight the uncertainties inherent in growing and selling a new farm product. This is not to dampen enthusiasm for a crop that has truly exciting promise, but to point out unresolved questions, so that farmers and investors can appreciate the economic risks and researchers can determine where their knowledge and talents can best be applied.

It is now clear that this wild desert plant can be commercially cultivated. On sites where it is adapted, it will flower, and it will set its seed in plantations. But survival is not enough, the plants must produce yields that can be harvested and sold at a profit. This is where the uncertainty lies.

Even in commerce, however, jojoba has made a promising start. Since 1982, mounting numbers of farmers in Arizona, California, Israel, and northern Mexico have obtained commercial harvests of seed. Moreover, a number of brokers and small companies have sold increasing amounts of jojoba oil harvested from both wild stands and plantations.

I found this book very useful and well laid out. I use this book whenever i get busy at work and can't attend bjj class as often as i would like. Very easy to understand with good pictures. My only negative comment is i wish the butterfly guard section was thicker.

I loved this book the second I opened it. This book has a great lay out and an easy step by step process to help any gaurd game at any level. I opened it a read it the first day and put some new simple techniques into effect my first session. The chapter on setting up and combonations from one technique to another is GREAT, This is what all new BJJ strive for. Great book and a must get for anyone interested in improving there gaurd game.

A review of the literature reveals numerous research projects which have considered the factors important in the selection of hotel/motel accommodation. These projects adopted a closed question approach and almost uniformly reported that cleanliness was the most important attribute, with price being rated far less important (Hosp. Res. J. 19(4) (1996) 113).Taking a fresh approach, this research focuses specifically on gaining an understanding of the impact of price in accommodation selection, and to do this three focus groups were established comprising 42 participants who were asked to participate in both open and closed questions. Of particular interest was that although the findings from the closed questions were very similar to other research (Int. J. Contemp. Hosp. Manage. 6(14) (2002) 294), the focus group discussion identified quite a different perspective: that price should not be considered along with other attributes but needs special consideration. The research identified 'trigger points' which play an important part in the potential guest purchase decision process.

The use of sanctions is increasing in the post-Cold War world. Along with this increase, the international community must ask itself whether sanctions "work," in the sense that they incite citizens to change or overthrow an offending government, and whether sanctions are really less damaging than the alternative of war. Here for the first time, sanctions and humanitarian aid experts converge on these questions and consider the humanitarian impacts of sanctions along with their potential political benefits. The results show that often the most vulnerable members of targeted societies pay the price of sanctions, and that in addition, the international system is called upon to compensate the victims for the undeniable pain they have suffered. Well-chosen case studies of South Africa, Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, and Haiti illustrate how much pain the community of states is willing to inflict upon civilians in the quest for political gains. This book is beautifully illustrated and well written, making it easy to grasp the geological concepts. I feel like I found a treasure. I have lived in Oregon all of my life. Now I am looking at the view of the mountains and river valleys--as well as that pile of "pretty" rocks in my yard-- with new eyes...

I gave this book to my husband, at his request. He's an engineer, so I figured that this would be a book that interested similar minds. :) It turns out to be really facinating - our extended family and friends have enjoyed sharing it, and the photos are beautiful and interesting for all ages. My only wish is that it still was easy to find in hardback, as I think that would be nice.

The book is written "story-style," which makes the information a lot more palatable to those who don't have a geology background. The historical and environmental perspectives are woven together with very thoughtful writing. There is a lot of data in this book, but I don't think it reads like a textbook, which is nice.

Overall, this is a great book. It makes a wonderful gift for just about anyone who appreciates the environment or anyone who has an interest in understanding the land formations they see or live on.

Remarkable book for specific examples and photos .......2006-05-23

In describing the events and processes in Oregon's geological history the author repeatedly references and explains familiar landscape features. (E.g. Alameda Ridge is a gravel bar left by the Lake Missoula Floods entering the Portland Basin. Mt. Scott, Rocky Butte and Powell Butte are all remnants of Pleistocene volcanoes. ) This makes the geology lesson both clearer and more interesting. Likewise, descriptions of flora and fauna further illustrate extant conditions during our state's evolution. With its many excellent photos, the book could easily succeed as a 'coffee table book.'

If you have an interest in the geology and natural history of the Oregon region, this is a fascinating and well written book. It's easy to follow and has beautiful photographic illustrations of the material.

My wife and I have always been facinated by geology and archeology but find so many books on the subjects difficult,
and at times boring, to read. We live on a fixed, retirement income so must keep our "luxury" expenditures to a minimum.
I bought In Search of Ancient Oregon for my wife on Mother's Day,
and we both found it an absolute gem of easy to read, interesting information with wonderful photographs. The book is everything it was advertised to be, and more. WELL worth the money it cost.
