Book Description
No sport has inspired better writing than baseball, and no one writes baseball better than Tom Verducci. As Sports Illustrateds lead baseball writer since 1993, Verducci has witnessed the achievements of the games greatest heroes and told their inspiring stories with unmatched passion and sophistication. He has enriched SIs readers with an insiders perspective on the game, examining subtle shifts in the ever-changing balance between pitchers and hitters, between slumps and streaks, between sacred records and the athletes trying to break them. Despite his deep affection for baseball, however, Verducci has never shied away from the hard truth about the game: his landmark piece about steroids, for instance, changed the baseball landscape forever. These 25 pieces span the generationsfrom Sandy Koufax to Roger Clemens, from Ted Williams to Barry Bonds. They chronicle the important trends in the game and celebrate baseballs brightest stars and most breathtaking performances. They are the best work of a writer at the top of his game.
Customer Reviews:
Great Baseball Reading.......2007-01-11
I enjoy the writing of Tom Verducci in Sports Illustrated, so I knew I wanted to get his book when it was published. I wasn't disappointed. The stories span generations and various aspects of the game and are wonderful to read.
A Great Variety of Baseball's Best Stories.......2006-03-19
Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated has treated us to a wide variety of his best baseball stories from 1993 to March of 2005. "The Left Arm of God" can only be about Sandy Koufax, the competitive fire of Jack Morris pitching game seven of the World Series for the Twins against the Braves, the stress of being a major league closer, the agony of the Red Sox and Cubs, the tragedy of Strawberry and Gooden with the Mets, the Red Sox winning it all in 2004, the nightmare that is steroids and why players didn't like to be slapped on the butt for doing a good job. These are a few of the subjects covered in the book, but the one I enjoyed the most was the last chapter when the author spent five days in spring training with the Toronto Blue Jays, and was confronted with the seemingly impossible task of hitting a baseball thrown by a professional player, even a non-roster one. Television does not do justice to the difficulty of deciding whether or not to swing at a pitch let alone hitting a round ball with a round bat square. Baseball has been blessed with great writers such as Roger Angell and Roger Kahn. It is comforting to know Tom Verducci is carrying on the tradition.

Good..........2000-03-30
I really love this series, and especially the rivalry between Jess and Alison. I really hope that Alison gets her comuppance at some point in the series. I thought that Lila and Bruce were so cute together. The one thing that puzzles me about this book is the cover. Is it just me, or is the writing on the sweater that 'Jessica' is wearing, back-to-front?
Great -- Changed the Way I view Bruce.......1999-09-06
I loved this book. I never would have imagined Lila and Bruce -- together!!!! Let's see how long this will last!
Another average SVU book- average on the better side.......1998-09-27

Customer Reviews:
Dull book with little information.......2002-10-22
If you have no idea what Internet is and have never seen ebay web site then you might learn something from this book. But for an average Internet-savvy person it offers little to nothing. There is a lengthy description of well-know information (like terms of sale of ebay) and constant selling of ebay business model: nothing you can't read elsewhere.
so and so.......2002-08-08
The author "gets" eBay. Unfortunately, he was not granted interviews or access to eBay people. As a result, the book is little more than a collection of articles from the Industry Standard, Fast Company abd the like. Furthermore, the book covers eBay until December 1999 or Q1 2001 at most. Back then, it looked like Yahoo! had a business model, remember? And yes, the author contemplates the possibility of a Yahoo! takeover (which was possible) and even the ridiculous idea that eBay should perhaps create its own "portal" in order to grow... Not worth the money. Buy "The Perfect Store" by Adam Cohen instead.
Not much meat.......2001-02-06
This book gives an overview of ebay's creation and why it has been a success. It gives no insider insights however. It was fun to read but I did not learn much from it. This book does not have substance.
A poor read.......2000-12-31
This book is basically a series of quoted and sited magazine articles hastily cobbled together into a book. The only "real" interviews done by the author are with a few eBay customers who use the site. The author admits no one with eBay granted him an interview or let him in the building. For a much better story of how eBay came to be, read eBoys by Robert Stross.
Sold!!.......2000-10-26
This book basically delivers what it promises to. Lots of somewhat dry facts about how a small Internet business boomed into one of the hottest "sites" available.
I am a big Ebay fan. I wanted to find out more about the people who created Ebay but also wanted to get a feel for the direction these people were hoping to guide the future of the site to.
Although I thought the story was fairly interesting, this book was very dryly written. Not much was cited other than the absolute bare bones facts and the writing was not particularly interesting.
While I realize this is a business book, I think there was much room for interesting tidbits, advice or funny stories. None here. Too bad...

Book Description
Nowadays, financial management is one of the core activities of firms. This explains the growing interest in corporate finance. There is, however, still relatively little empirical knowledge about the financing behaviour of Dutch firms. This study of the financial behaviour of the Dutch corporate sector offers a contribution in this respect. A broad range of financial decisions is examined, including capital structure choice, dividend policy, working capital management and the financing of investment. The central research question dealt with is whether the financial behaviour of Dutch firms exhibits symptoms of capital market frictions, related to problems of asymmetric information. Use of panel data on individual firms makes this study unique for the Netherlands and enables the analysis to distinguish between different categories of firms. A large-scale survey among Dutch firms is included which reveals important microeconomic motives underlying the savings drift exhibited by the Dutch corporate sector during the 1980s. The many links with both the theoretical and empirical literature makes this study indispensable for researchers, students and practitioners in the field of corporate finance.

Book Description
The economics and history of the closing years of the 20th century may turn out to mark the era of transformation when the nation-states lose most of their ability to maneuver in economics as finance and investment become transnationalized. In the European Community and similar associations, the nation-state loses some formal powers and has to modify its policies to fit those of its neighbors and the association. An economically sustainable social democracy may be beyond the reach of any one nation, and reforms based in a single middle-sized country may be impossible.

Great Place To Go Fishing.......2007-05-10
I have been in the aquariast hobby for quite a few years. Though I haven't had a tank set-up for almost 10 years since retiring from the US Navy and moving from Va. to Ga. I decided for the sake of the fish in my 150 gal tank it was best left behind in the care of my neighbor and best friend JD. I am now in the research and planning stages of setting up a 250 gal. reef tank. Since so much has happened in the last 10 years I felt it was wise to get some reading material for varied opinions and fact gathering. I now have 5 reference volumes to refer to. This book by Vince is not only a beautiful book with outstanding pictures but is my favorite. Crammed with every possible aspect of this hobby. From beginner to advanced the info is superb. In fact a Newbie could take this book as a stand alone reference from your very first Marine Fish only tank to an explosively beautiful Reef with Fish, Inverts, and Corals. It gives info on all the types of filtration from the Jaubert System,(My Favorite), to the extreme hi-tech route..Plan on spending major bucks if you go the hi-tech route. in my opinion the Jaubert System is as close to natural as you can get and the results I have seen from those using it match if not excel over much more expensive set-ups, but hey, back to the book. Every possible life form is fully described in easy to understand detail, inhabitant compatibility, location of origin, feeding, disease care, all of it. The way it is organized makes it superior for that "gotta have info right now" scenario when one of your prized specimens needs immediate attention. Though the diseases coverage is brief it is concise and easy to follow. This book is now among 2 that sit out on my coffee table. It gets read or at least browsed through alot by my visiting friends. Kids love the pictures. I highly recommend it for anyone from beginner to advanced. You can find higher priced books but non better. It's great buy at twice the price.
Great book for the marine aquarium hobbyist.......2003-12-08
I have positively oodles of books on fish behavior, diversity and ecology. When I brought this book home the wife asked "why do you need another fish book?" I will tell you like I told her.
This is the best book I have seen on the fishes commonly found in the aquarium industry. The fishes are arranged according to systematic (evolutionary) relationships, so it is in a format that is familiar to me, and more useful to people that are not already familiar with fish groups. Organization, however, is a minor part of a book. But the information in this book is also top notch. There is important information on hundreds of species referencing, feeding, care, availability and compatibility that is important when considering an addition to your salt water aquarium. There are also excellent sections on general aquarium keeping and reef inverts. This makes this a must have for any hobbyist. Lastly this is also a VERY attractive book, it now gets to be in the living room (near the aquarium where it should be) instead of in my library.
I didn't use those exact words with the wife, but you get the picture. If you're looking for a book on salt water aquarium fishes this is a great choice. Hopefully amazon will begin carrying it soon.
Book Description
An encyclopedic reference for setting up, stocking, and maintaining a saltwater aquarium.
Nothing rivals the color and appeal of a saltwater aquarium. The
Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium simplifies the complexities of setting-up and maintaining a successful saltwater aquarium.
The book illustrates and explains:
Specific characteristics of invertebrates and marine fish
Important differences between tropical and freshwater fish
Choosing a tank: advantages and disadvantages of glass and acrylic, different shapes, and critical construction details
Accessories such as aquarium heaters, lights, and filters
Water testing and maintaining the correct chemical balance
More than half of the book is a directory that covers species from 34 fish families. Details include their characteristics, natural environment, diet and feeding, size range, and aquarium behavior.
Coldwater aquariums are covered in a separate section that shows how to establish an artificial habitat for fish requiring temperate saltwater.
This full-color reference will appeal to saltwater tropical fish enthusiasts at any level.
Customer Reviews:
Nice reference.......2007-01-10
When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???
Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16
This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.
Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03
We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.
Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13
Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.
Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09
This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.
