        Book Description

        As the 21st century begins, gravitational wave astronomy is poised for unprecedented expansion and discovery. This workshop focussed on ground-based gravitational wave detectors and the astrophysical sources they are expected to observe. The main purpose of the meeting was to bring together gravitational wave physicists, astronomers, astrophysicists, and numerical relativists to assess the current state of the field, and to provide a forum to generate future strategies and collaborations.

          Book Description

          As the 21st century begins, gravitational wave astronomy is poised to open a new observational window on the universe. Ground-based kilometer-scale interferometers, such as LIGO, VIRGO, and GEO600, will observe high frequency gravitational radiation, while the space-based LISA detector will probe the low frequency regime. Taken together, these gravitational wave detectors will provide an unprecedented look at astrophysical systems that have previously been viewed almost exclusively through electromagnetic "eyes".

          This workshop focused on the astrophysics of anticipated gravitational wave sources and the scenarios that surround them. The papers encompass theoretical studies as well as observations of associated electromagnetic or particle signatures and emphasize issues that need to be clarified for a better astrophysical understanding of these sources.

          Topics include: overview of gravitational wave astrophysics, astrophysical collapses and bursts, gamma ray bursts and neutron stars, gravitational captures, intermediate mass black holes, massive black holes, massive black hole binary mergers, gravitational waves and binary stars, gravitational wave detection, as well as conference summaries.

              5 out of 5 stars great hiking guide.......2007-09-27

              We spent a week in the Yellowstone and hike everyday - this guide helps us as a lot to find what is the best for each day. We easily found the way how to get to the trails and we never lost our way. This book is definitely very useful for everybody going to the Yellowstone (or Grand Teton) not to stay on road but enjoy hiking.

              4 out of 5 stars Novice Trail Walker.......2007-03-09

              I won't be traveling out west until this summer. I think this book does an excellent job in reviewing the trials in short order, from an experienced hiker. It gives you all of the information you need to decide on which trails you should plan on hiking if you do not know the area. Allows you to plan your trip for maximum effect.

              The elevation guides and ratings guide allow you to make reasonable decisions about setting out on a hike based not only on mileage but also on the difficulty you can expect and practical decisions about parking and taking kids along.

              I think it it will be very useful.

              4 out of 5 stars not enough Teton.......2006-12-28

              First of all, this is a GREAT book.

              I just want other readers to know that 3/4's of this book, if not more, is on Yellowstone hikes. I would have loved more hikes on Tetons - at least half and half...which is what I was expecting when buying this book.

              very helpful

              5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the LOCAL Idaho/Montana/Wyoming Regular.......2006-06-07

              I live about 90 miles from Jackson and 100 from West Yellowstone, so I go to both parks a lot. As a teacher, I have my summers to go camp and hike from time to time, and I just got back from a trip today. While at Lake Hotel, I chanced on this book, and bought it. This was yesterday. The book has 45 different trails in it to hike in Yellowstone and the Tetons (though most are in Yellowstone). I went ahead and hiked one yesterday (Elephant Back) and got a great view of Yellowstone Lake. The directions were very clear and there were guide-points along the route in the book so I knew just where I was. The book even mentioned this is Grizzly habitat in the spring/early summer, and sure enough, when I got down from the hike, there was a bear. This kind of information could be a lifesaver to the inexperienced Yellowstone or Teton hiker. Today, I hiked two more hikes in the book, one short one at West Thumb and a longer one at Biscuit Basin up to a waterfall and overlook. This book is very easy to use, has great maps, grades the difficulty of each hike, and has a variety from hikes under a mile to hikes of over twenty that take several days. My goal, using this excellent book, is to hike them all in a year or so. Great photos, durable cover, great maps. This is the perfect book for locals or for tourists who come often or who are planning a two to three week stay. I would not think it would be good for someone visiting for a day or two, as you could not scratch the surface of this gold mine of information. Two thumbs up!

                My mom picked this book out for me and when I first saw the cover I thought to myself, "yeah right like I'm going to read this." I let the book sit in my room for a couple of days but then I kind of got interested in it. I decided it wouldn't hurt to read the first chapter. The first chapter started and then ended and then the second, the third, and so on untill the book was finished. I had read the whole book in one evening. I loved it!! Not only was it interesting and kept me wanting to read it but it was written about stuff that happens to teens like me in everyday life. I liked this book so much that I thanked my mom and had her go and buy me numbers 1-4. I've been reading the series ever since. In closing I would just like to encourage you to read this book and the others in the series! They truley are awesome!!

                  In 1941, Franklin Delano Roosevelt identified "four essential human freedoms." Three of these -- freedom from fear, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion -- had long been understood as defining principles of liberalism. Roosevelt's fourth freedom -- freedom from want -- was not. Indeed, classic liberals had argued that the only way to guarantee this freedom would be through an illiberal redistribution of wealth. In Freedom from Want, Kathleen G. Donohue describes how, between the 1880s and the 1940s, American intellectuals transformed classical liberalism into its modern American counterpart by emphasizing consumers over producers and consumption over production.

                  Donohue first examines this conceptual shift through the writings of a wide range of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social critics -- among them William Graham Sumner, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Richard T. Ely, Edward Bellamy, and Thorstein Veblen -- who rethought not only the negative connotations of consumerism but also the connection between one's right to consume and one's role in the production process. She then turns to the politicization of these ideas beginning with the establishment of a more consumer-oriented liberalism by Walter Lippmann and Walter Weyl and ending in the New Deal era, when this debate evolved from intellectual discourse into public policy with the creation of such bodies as the National Recovery Administration and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration.

                  Deftly combining intellectual, cultural, and political history, Freedom from Want sheds new light on the ways in which Americans reconceptualized the place of the consumer in society and the implications of these shifting attitudes for the philosophy ofliberalism and the role of government in safeguarding the material welfare of the people.

                      Book Description

                      Relations between Japan and the EU rarely hit the headlines, but the changing global geopolitical balance in the 1990s has prompted Japan to reassess its international role and to question the basis upon which its foreign economic policies have rested for the past half century. This book traces the history of Japan's interaction with the EU and assesses how together they have the potential to offer joint solutions to the problems of the 21st century. In examining the development of that cooperation, the book also analyzes the importance of mutual perceptions for creating the right environment in which bilateral relations may prosper.

                        If you're under the impression that the Northeast's natural beauty has given way to high-rises, condominiums, and suburban sprawl, this volume will certainly change your mind. In actuality, the area comprising Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont--New England, in short--is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, whether it be marine life below sea level or alpine meadows above the tree line. In fact, New England is nothing less than a naturalist's paradise. Much of the area has been scoured by glacial ice, leaving behind cirques, arêtes, and a fjord, all of which are featured in a geology section. Fossils are highlighted too, alerting readers to the presence of dinosaur footprints in both Hadley, Massachusetts and Rocky Hill, Connecticut. In addition, an easy-to-use field guide assists readers in the identification of 1,000 of the area's current inhabitants, including giant puffball mushrooms, a healthy sampling of conifers and hardwoods, and five species of shark. Field trip ideas, from secluded Baxter State Park (no paved roads, no hook-ups, no gas or groceries) to popular Acadia National Park in Maine, complete the picture. All this is compiled in a single volume that's perfect for both armchair naturalists and those planning actual trips to the area.

                        Book Description

                        Filled with concise descriptions and stunning photographs, the National Audubon Society Field Guide to New England belongs in the home of every New England resident and in the suitcase or backpack of every visitor. This compact volume contains:

                        An easy-to-use field guide for identifying 1,000 of the region's wildflowers, trees, mushrooms, mosses, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, butterflies, mammals, and much more;

                        A complete overview of New England's natural history, covering geology, wildlife habitats, ecology, fossils, rocks and minerals, clouds and weather patterns and night sky;

                        An extensive sampling of the area's best parks, preserves, beaches, forests, islands, and wildlife sanctuaries, with detailed descriptions and visitor information for 50 sites and notes on dozens of others.

                        The guide is packed with visual information -- the 1,500 full-color images include more than 1,300 photographs, 14 maps, and 16 night-sky charts, as well as 150 drawings explaining everything from geological processes to the basic features of different plants and animals.

                        For everyone who lives or spends time in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, or Vermont, there can be no finer guide to the area's natural surroundings than the National Audubon Society Field Guide to New England.

                        5 out of 5 stars Educational Book.......2007-06-10

                        This book is amazing!! It is very educational. I like how it has only the plants and animals that are specific to New England. The pictures are clear and the blurbs about the animals and plants have just the right amount of information in them for learning. I also like how it has other aspects like the night sky, geology, climate, ect. and it is well divided into those categories. I use this book to teach kids about what they find out in nature. It is easy for them to use and quickly find what they are looking at. It is also easy for them to read and understand. Some of them just like perusing through it to see what is around them. Once again, an amazing book for yourself, family, or for educational purposes. I wouldn't travel in New England without it.

                        After using the Northwest version of this Audubon series, the New England version was attractive as a companion field guide to my bird books. Like the Northwest version, the New England version hasn't disappointed me.

                        has what I needed, but isn't very good with the oaks, maple trees, and some fish.

                        5 out of 5 stars The best pictures are in this little book.......2006-11-04

                        After flipping through and enjoying the sharp photography of this book, you will realize that it is also abounding in interesting facts concerning all of New England. Ever wonder what kind of fish you caught last summer or what that caterpillar will change into? Whether you need to know what kind of Oak tree is in your backyard or want to check out the constellations at various seasons - it's in this book! Great (and small enough) to take on hikes to identify animal tracks, flowers and even mushrooms! Although I have a few birding books, I find this one is easiest to use for identification. If you live in NE and want to know what is happening outdoors this book will pique your interest.

                        4 out of 5 stars Guide book review.......2006-08-05

                        This guide has a lot of interesting information, but not enough on birds. It seems to include a small representation of the birds that may be found in Maine.
