      Book Description

The use of new technologies, coupled with the fact that there is an increasing amount of work being done on-line, whether on the Internet, intranets, LANs or other networks, has made extensive employee monitoring by employers inexpensive and easy. Employers have legitimate concerns about the efficiency of their employees, of the quality of the goods or services produced, and in relation to security. Additionally, monitoring can assist in employee health and safety, help reduce or eliminate sexual, racial and other forms of harassment, reveal areas in which training is required, and reduce the potential for crime, corruption, and other illegal activities. There is rising concern about the rights of employees, especially with respect to their rights to privacy, but also, for example, with respect to questions of justice and employee autonomy and dignity, to the legitimacy of some informed consent, to respect for employees as persons, and to trust. Clearly there are conflicting rights and interests. Ways need to be found to resolve these conflicts in a manner that is fair to all. This book contributes to the debate and will point the way toward some solutions. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines, countries, and cultures, and so bring a wide range of perspectives to the issues.

Quests are nothing new for travel writers. Some have toiled over a villa restoration in Tuscany. Some have pursued exotic culinary adventures. Alex Dingwall-Main, a landscape architect by day, introduces plant-purchasing as a grand pursuit in his new book The Angel Tree: The Enchanting Quest for the World's Oldest Olive Tree. Despite the title, the Dingwall-Main doesn't necessarily need to find the oldest tree—but at a minimum he must procure one that is ancient enough (say 1,000-1,500 years—olives can live extraordinarily long lives) and pretty enough to satisfy his wealthy client, Monsieur Lautour. Dingwall-Main finds several promising subjects, including the Angel Tree of the title; frustratingly, though, the locals sometimes can't be moved to part with the most revered trees for a mere monetary reward. In addition to recounting his shopping expeditions, the author brings in snippets of European history (covering such diverse topics as the Punic wars between Rome and Carthage and the Black Death) to illustrate the turbulent times through which these old trees have survived. He then fills in the rest of the book with tidbits from the life of a well-to-do garden designer. Some readers may simply enjoy living vicariously through Dingwall-Main as he crisscrosses the Mediterranean in search of Lautour's tree, but others could find themselves asking if his description of test-driving a Mini-Cooper is really necessary, or wondering what kind of person packs formal wear on a trip to buy a plant. The Angel Tree does illuminate one fascinating aspect of life in Southern Europe: old olive trees are considered a must-have accessory for the gardens of the rich. This is a boon to farmers who can sell past-their-prime trees for top dollar. Dingwall-Main also shows a humorous touch, especially as he relates one incident in which, due to a careless delivery driver, an acquaintance's newly purchased tree falls into her swimming pool. At its best, The Angel Tree serves as an interesting, though perhaps unnecessary reminder of what wealth can accomplish. With enough money, not only can we possess something that has lived through centuries of Western history, but (with a little luck) we can have it perfectly situated in our garden. --Leah Weathersby

      Book Description

A serendipitous, fender-bending encounter between the author and a wealthy Frenchman in Provence leads to the strangest, funniest horticultural odyssey in recent memory. The rich, eccentric Frenchman has just finished renovating, with great care and attention, a beautiful house in Provence. But the elegant courtyard looks very empty. 'Find me the oldest olive tree in existence,' he challenges the author, 'and bring it back to take pride of place in my garden.' The author's travels take him to the olive groves of France, the farms of Greece and Spain, and many backyards of Italy.Along the way, he encounters a 3,000-year-old tree, a farmer who won't sell his tree unless he can sell the farm that surrounds it, mafiosi skullduggery in the plant world, unscrupulous dealers, divided families, local weddings, farcical disasters, and a village that believes a drop of rain that has touched the leaves of the Angel Tree will cure any illness or sadness.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another predictable olive cookbook.......2004-09-06

Food fans of the humble olive will find here not another predictable olive cookbook, of which several are on the market already, but a unique history of the olive tree and a documentation of the quest for the world's oldest olive tree. Strangely enough, a fender-bending encounter between landscape architect Dingwall-Main and a rich Frenchman in Provence led to this horticultural exploration, which could have been featured in our gardening section, but deserves coverage here for its fine focus on olive tree and olive growing history in France, Spain and other European nations. The Angel Tree is simply enchanting.

          Book Description

This book describes the subject of electrodynamics at classical as well as quantum level, developed as an interaction at a distance. Thus it has electric charges interacting with one another directly and not through the medium of a field. In general such an interaction travels forward and backward in time symmetrically, thus apparently violating the principle of causality. It turns out, however, that in such a description the cosmological boundary conditions become very important. The theory therefore works only in a cosmology with the right boundary conditions; but when it does work it is free from the divergences that plague a quantum field theory.

            Book Description

50 years of DNA double helix; what was before, and afterwards

The present book, although written mainly for science students and research scientists, is also aimed at those readers who look at science, not for its own sake, but in search of a better understanding of our world in general. What were the fundamental questions asked by the early pioneers of molecular biology? What made them tick for decades, trying to elucidate the basic mechanisms of heredity and life itself? In each chapter, the development of a particular aspect of modern biology is described in a historical and logical context, not missing to take into account human aspects of the protagonists of the story. At the end of each chapter, there are some excursus with additional information, technical and otherwise, which can be read separately. The book is enriched with many illustrations, including facsimile reproductions from the original descriptions of key experiments.

David Leadbetter is the guru particularly known for the way he's molded the games of the Nicks--Nick Price and Nick Faldo--to often breathtaking levels. Faults and Fixes is a perfectly pragmatic instructional. Breaking golf into the full swing, the short game, the game in general, and mental approaches, he fills one page with a common problem--say, slicing, hooking, undisciplined practice--and on the facing page presents its cure. The language is clear, and the advice is well illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Key concepts of correcting your skills in golf.......2006-10-05

The challenges and faults in golf are outlined by Leadbetter in every facet of the game (from putting to the full swing) and he even includes areas for senior play. Areas are rated based on the player's level of experience and are even rated in terms of faults common to golfers of all levels.

Each section is well written with drills or imagery to communicate how to fix a problem. One side side is the fault and other other side of the page is the solution. Illustrations are clear and often humorous.

Dissecting every facet of the game is Leadbetter's specialty. This book is recommended for the intermediate or advanced player for the most part. Beginners can use this book as an outline for improvement as skill improves.

              4 out of 5 stars Faults & Fixes.......2006-10-04

If you like drills for specific swing faults, then this book is for you. Two pages are devoted to the cause and cure of each fault. I've returned to this book again and again.

5 out of 5 stars David Leadbetter's Faults and Fixes.......2006-03-16

I am a 12 handicap player who like most of us doesn't get a chance to play or practice as frequently as I would like. A self taught player I have an impressive collection of magazines, books, videos and various toys (see Tin Cup)I have utilized to teach myself the game and improve. There is no doubt that this book is the best I have used, in fact I am on my second copy as the first became worn out from my use at the range. Information is organized easily so you can get to what you need quickly. The "fault" is on the left page and the "fix" is on the right all with excellent photos and easy to understand concepts - a wonderful reference.

An excellent gift for any golfer, client or yourself!

                      5 out of 5 stars I totally recommend this!.......2006-11-30

I've gone through the Secret Sister series, The Hidden Diary Series, and now the Friends for a Season series by Sandra Byrd. I've grown up reading and loving the books. Red Velvet is a beautiful novel, with a tinge of sadness cradled in a blanket of peace. It offers comfort, advice, and enjoyment. An excellent story with an excellent message--double thumbs up!

You know how some books are emotional all the way through, or some books are humorous all the way through? Well, this book has all of it. If this were the only book in the world, I'd read it over and over. It's that good.

This is my very favorite of all the books Sandra Byrd has written. I can't wait for her next one.

4 out of 5 stars Examines Real Emotions of a Teenaged Girl.......2006-05-11

Red Velvet is a well-written novel and part of a series that deals with a teenaged girl facing the imminent death of her cancer-ridden mother. The girl, Quinn Miller, is fourteen throughout the course of the book and while her faith is a big part of her story, author Byrd doesn't throw it in the reader's face but makes it an integral part of who the girl is and how she handles the many threads of family, friends and sorrow in her life.

Quinn is the kind of girl anyone would be happy to know; warm, caring, spunky and ultimately able to do her part to make her mother's last days joyous ones. The supporting characters - a clever ten-year-old brother, a father facing the loss of his love's life, a grandmother who ends up making a young girl's dream come true - all ring true and nothing they do or say seems contrived or false.

Quinn's interaction with another teen girl, a girl also dealing with a mother with cancer, makes the strength of the character quietly obvious to the reader and it will be a rare reader who reaches the end of this book without at least one moment of emotional response to this wonderful character.

4 out of 5 stars Teen girls will enjoy!.......2006-02-15

Cancer is hard, especially when you are a child and your mother is the one sick. Quinn is fourteen when her mother goes to a special cancer treatment center. She and her brother, Tucker, will be living at the center for six weeks, leaving behind school, church and friends.

During their stay, Quinn's mother shares her list of goals, from when she was a teenager, after she sees a similar list her daughter has written. She shares the list to demonstrate to Quinn how alike they are, but Quinn sees it as a way to show her mother how much she loves her. In trying to cross off the last few items on her mother's list, Quinn begins to worry that fulfillment of the list will mean her mother will die. But there is the threat of her mother dying with a list of things undone.

Quinn is a Christian and wants to share her faith with a new friend. Annie's mother is being treated for cancer, too, but her family doesn't talk about it, or about the secret from her father's past that has recently surfaced. Quinn knows honesty will help the family, but doesn't know how to show this to Annie. Without being self righteous, Quinn shares her faith.

How do you deal with the possible loss of your mother? What happens between family members when faced with this challenge? And, most importantly, how does God help answer these questions? It seems that everyone in the family has something they want to make right with Quinn's mom, while there is time.

This is a good, but bittersweet, young adult story dealing with losing those you love, and showing love to those you might lose--everyone. While I was thrown by a different version of the Bible than I use, when scripture was quoted, I felt it was aptly used in the telling.

Armchair Interviews says: Red Velvet would be enjoyed by young teen girls, and should help those faced with an ill family member.

I agree with the previous reviewers: I carried this book to the Galapagos and found it a super companion. It isn't comprehensive -- and a few additional pages of IDs and photos might be desirable -- but it covers all of the essential natural-history topics: geology/volcanoes, history, fish, birds, mammals, turtles & iguanas, geography and so on -- and the photos and text are excellent. Indeed, the text is what sets it apart; there are short, interesting discussions of many of the features that are exceptional to the islands, so without any deep study you come away with some appreciation of what you have seen. Finally, in addition to the good chapters mentioned by other reviewers, there is an excellent chapter for planning your trip, which details what you will see where. It is amazing that so much good stuff was fit into this thin book. Take it with a more comprehensive treatment if you want the name of everything you see (or ask your guide).

                                    5 out of 5 stars Galapagos Wildlife, 2nd:A Visitor's Guide.......2007-03-27

Small enough to bring with me, but comprehensive enough to be helpful giving a good overview of the habitat and wildlife of the Galapagos. Pictures good as are descriptions of the islands and conservation.

3 out of 5 stars Good to superficial guide, depending on your interests.......2002-12-05

Having visited the Galápagos and planning my return, I can say this introductory booklet (140 pages) is a reliable for people who want an overall idea of the ecology and want to identify some of the most prominent wildlife they are likely to encounter - it is easy to understand, has good information, decent photos of the main players and illustations of the commonest landing sites. For you, this booklet rates three stars for clarity, comprehension level and lightness in your backpack, but it fails next to Andy Swash and Rob Still's more comprehensive and better illustrated "Birds, Mammals and Reptiles of the Galápagos Island".

For those who want a more in depth knowledge of the Galápagos and their wildlife, or are traveling to some of the more remote sites or the northernmost islands: you will feel short-changed and wish you had purchased more comprehensive guide(s), so you can identify all the critters you will possibly observe and learn much more about their habitats and behaviors, climate and cvlimate zones, etc. For those travelers (birders, nature buffs, divers, etc.), this booklet rates a generous three stars for its relatively topical treatments.

Choose your guidebooks according to your interests and skills. And go there, walk softly and leave nothing. Visiting should have as little impact as possible, and in my opinion when done properly does help protect these wonderful islands of biological diversity from rampant pirate fishing, oil spills and short-sighted political stewardship. Our "tangibilitized" interest is the only one the Ecuadorian government- at least up until now- has responded to.

I just came back from the Galapagos and found David Horwell's book indispensable. It is a very readable and concise introduction to the flora and fauna of the Galapagos islands. Beautiful photographs. Very informative. Easy to carry around and refer to. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the Galapagos islands.

This relatively small book on the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is packed with information and pictures. The author has gone to a great deal of trouble to condense a vast amount of data into a handbook for the traveller, without sacrificing essential information, clarity or accuracy. Not only does it cover the wildlife that the visitor is most likely to encounter, it also gives a succinct history of the islands. Working in the Galapagos Travel Industry, and having considered many similar books for pre-trip briefing and ready reference while in the islands, this is the book I would recommend.
