the book i order was suppose to be new and hardcover thats why i wanted to buy it, but when it comes home it was really old, and it has writings on it,some parts were ripped and it was missing a cd. I will never order books from here again.

Bought this for 4 bucks, because it was an older edition. Found out it has the same information as the newer edition. The lesson of this story is... Don't buy new editions!

Great Textbook.......2005-09-25

This beautiful, full-color, highly-informative textbook has been great for my Astronomy class. Completely up-to-date (well, with the exception of the possible two new planets, one of which has been confirmed only recently and definitely since the text's Spring 2005 publication), it teaches astronomy equally well to the physics major and the humanities student (such as myslef) who is taking the class for a science credit. The authors present the information in a fun way and introduce terms simply for the student. Supplemental material includes an excellent computer program, Starry Night, as well as web resources for reviewing the text material for tests. I highly recommend this text! (And so, of course, does my Astronomy teacher)

This was one of the two books I bought this semester and it was ok also same thing it was quite used and not too sturdy...it was the correct item and it arrived in a timely fashion. overall about 3.5 stars

Great Book, Great Subject........2005-09-08

I think that the book is great, however, if you are getting this book for as an astronomy textbook for a College course you should be aware that the 7th edition (this is the 6th, is already out) seems to be required these days for class. Some instructors might let you use the 6th edition (it is MUCH cheaper, so it wouldn't hurt to check,) but I recommend that you make sure that this is actually the book that you need. It comes with Astronomy Software on the CD that, alone, makes it worth the low price it is selling for anyway.

The fires and resulting air pollution which afflicted Southeast Asia in 1997 and 1998 were a major environmental disaster affecting the livelihood and health of the people of the region, destroying forest and wildlife resources, releasing greenhouse gases and having serious implications for the rich biodiversity of the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The fires and haze became a subject of regional and international concern; they attracted considerable attention from the media, and were the subject of research by governments, academics and non-government organisations. Forest Fires and Regional Haze in Southeast Asia summarises and analyses this information I a single reference work.

Individual chapters have been contributed by international experts and cover a range of issues. The relation of the El Niño effect to droughts and fires is discussed and the history of fires in the region is outlined. Although the fires were associated with long periods of drought, in most cases they had human causes, and the land and forest management policies responsible for them are also identified. Another chapter describes the important role remote sensing played in monitoring and locating the fires and haze. Other contributions are concerned with the chemistry of haze, the long-range transport of pollutants and their modelling, the effects on forest ecosystems, and the implications for global climate change. Health impacts of the air pollution are discussed and the costs in economic terms are analysed. The inability of the Indonesian government to control the fires, the public responses to pollution problems and efforts at international cooperation are also discussed, as is the portrayal of the issues in the media.

The two editors are specialists in environmental management and air pollution respectively; they are based in Borneo and have had first-hand experience of the fires and haze, together with associated issues. They have brought together a wide range of international expertise and the book is of particular value because of its interdisciplinary nature. It should be a useful reference for a variety of university courses in the physical and social sciences; it will also be a valuable aid to policy makers and should be of interest to the general public in understanding one of the most serious environmental problems of recent years.

This book is, in my opinion, a close second to Blaise and Mukherjee's "Days and Nights in Calcutta" as the best introduction to Calcutta for westerners. Winchester's own views and experiences are valuable, but it is in his choice of other voices that this book comes into its own.

Although this book is very well written, I disliked the content and the way that the author portrayed his story. This book may have been true to life but it was depressing and a hard book to commit to. I would not buy this book.

This book is extremely well written. The author portrays a great understanding of Urban American life. While the book is full of fantastic description the author sometimes takes it over the top and describes the same situation in so many different ways that its easy to lose track of the story. Also, the story could end at every chapter. The author doesn't give any suspence or enthusiasm to continue reading. For a commited reader this is a fantastic piece of writing but for most others it is (I'm sorry to say) down right boring.

Being shy Sam makes no friends, except for the old school janitor.Through being with the janitor Sam comes out of his shell and learns alot of important values about life.He learns that family doesn't have to be blood related, that the people around him who support him and his mum are just as good as family. maybe even better.

Doesn't include phones!.......2001-08-13

How the editors of consumer reports could have stunningly failed to include that critical home item--the telephone--is a key failure of this book to deliver what it promises. This guide lands on CD players, recorders, digital video recorders, MP3 players, receivers and even satellite television. Could it be that the editors think the telephone is too basic to list? Yet the book does rank the mundane vacuum cleaners, hand mixers, and even hot-water heaters. The ultimate irony is that the picture on the front cover--in at least one version of this book--shows a mother fixing what looks to be a colorful stir-fry while her son looks on and a football game blares from a television behind them--and despite all this the mother is, yes, yakking on a nameless cordless phone.

Whether or not you like Consumer Report's reviews of products, this book is a great collection of things to look for when looking for appliances or other items for your house. Even if the model you're interested in isn't included in the rankings, the evaluation criteria are still a good starting place for your own analysis. All the material is pulled from the CR magazines over the past year or so.

In the revolutionary decade between 1979 and 1992, it would have been difficult to find three political systems as different as death-squad-dominated El Salvador, peaceful social-democratic Costa Rica, and revolutionary Sandinista Nicaragua. Yet when the fighting was finally ended by a peace plan initiated by Costa Rica's President Oscar Arias, all three had found a common destination in democracy and free markets. To explain this extraordinary turn of events is the task of this landmark book, which fuses political economy and cultural analysis.

Both the divergent political histories and their convergent outcome were shaped by a single commodity that has dominated these export economies from the nineteenth century to the present--coffee. Jeffery Paige shows that the crises of the 1980s had their roots in the economic and political crises of the 1930s, when the revolutionary left challenged the ruling coffee elites of all three countries. He interweaves and compares the history, economics, and class structures of the three countries, thus clarifying the course of recent struggles. The heart of the book is his conversations with sixty-two leaders of fifty-eight elite dynasties, who for the first time tell their own stories of the experience of Central American revolution.

Paige's analysis challenges not only Barrington Moore's influential theory of dictatorship and democracy but also contemporary approaches to "transitions to democracy." It also shows that a focus on either political economy or culture alone cannot account for the transformation of elite ideology, and that revolution in Central America is deeply rooted in the personal, familial, and class histories of the coffee elites.

Jumps around but still very useful.......2007-03-28

Jeffrey Paige is an excellent sociologist who provides an in-depth look at three countries in Central America. Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador are all explored throughout this book. There are occasional references to Guatemala but overall the other three are considered because their development has similarities. While they are different in the way they developed economically and socially they came form similar backgrounds. Similar governments formed in all three according to Paige and the effects of this were to drive these countries into a relationship where elites hold power. The social elites of the coffee producers provide an interesting case study to follow. They provide the driving force for dictatorships and while the Depression of 1929 gives fuel to the communist fire the elites retain a wide range of control. El Salvador is shown to be both a civil war and a terrorist problem that must be dealt with by resolution of local politics. Nicaragua is shown through the Somoza regime which grew out of the US marine intervention, dollar diplomacy and our support of the conservatives in that country. The sociological study comes across as scattered at times but in the end provides a useful analysis when considering the disparity in incomes throughout Central America. This book is not for beginners and historians should use it carefully. For those in sociology it is a very useful study filled with many primary accounts.

This book has it all! I loved it; it gave you a real understanding of coffee's power. A lot of liberals are kvetching about the exploitation of coffee countries in labor and land, but this book puts that myth in historical perspective.

Another book that discusses these issues, specifically in the country of Costa Rica, is Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made, by Colesberry & McLean.

The chapter, Coffee! Costa Rica's First Revolution, includes essays such as "Land Crazy and Labor Shy," "Coffee Politics," "Closing the Coffee Frontier" and "The Generation of '89," which touch on many of the subjects discussed in Paige's text.

Herbs Coloring Book.......2000-04-21

This book makes a good reference for those who paint or draw.However, I wouldn't recommend it for children because each herb isdrawn in a highly detailed manner. Unlike some of his other works, the drawings appear to be more styalized than natural. Also, some of Bernath's other coloring books contain a great deal of information on the subject matter, but here no information (other than the herb name) is given at the bottom of each page. There are, however, colored reference drawings included on the cover.
