This book gives a coherent and detailed description of analytical methods devised to study random matrices. Mehta's book is the book that gets refered to in every article that deals with random matrices. It covers classical theory of random matrices well, but omits many important developments such as chiral random matrices. 'Random matrices' is somewhat pricey but it is nevertheless the best book there is on theory of random matrices. Unfortunately.

Best Aikido is a book for mid-level students. The pictures are excellent, the descriptions are brief, to the point, and on a level for students who have already mastered the basics. Very easy to understand. I know of no other single book that shows so many different mid-level techniques. This is part one. the Part 2 Book is the master's Course. Together, they are probably the most comprehensive, exhaustive, current, authoritative references for Aikido.
Incomplete.......2007-05-16
Aikido is Budo, as the authors speak of many times in the beginning. But they do not discuss this any further than that in this book. But there is another book by these authors that discusses that. This strikes me as being a little too Capitalistic. What this book does do fairly well is discuss and show the basic moves and steps in Aikido. And since it was written by the Founder's son and grandson, I respect and trust their words very much.
Now for the unfortunate aspect of Aikido, it requires 2 people to learn it. For many, this is fine. This requirement is because the martial aspect of Aikido is purely defensive, so there are no punches or kicks to practice. The funny thing is, that is what I wanted. I should have thought this out on my own and realized that you need someone to attack you before you can defend yourself, in practice or in reality. So I cannot knock the authors for this failure, it is all mine. Just take it as a warning before exploring this art on your own.
In short, this book should be trusted and respected, but it is incomplete for the entire Aikido experience.

Easy to understand.......2005-05-23
I have read several aikido books that demonstrate visually, proper aikido techniques. This is the first book I have read that was easy to follow, easy to understand and easy to remember. Although it was easy in all these areas, it wasn't at all lacking. The information in this book is "must have" for any beginning aikido practitioner.
Best Book on the Basics of Aikido.......2004-04-06
I have 4 other titles on Aikido and have browsed through quite a few others. I must say this is by far the best on the basics of Aikido. The pictures are reasonably clear and the descriptions are reasonably detailed. However, I would have liked all the techniques executed (and pictures taken) without the hakama on so that the readers can have a good look at the footwork as well.

I was very excited at first with this series. Looked good, sounded good, as fare as I could tell translated well, and the first volume was great! But, (yes but) it completely let me down with volume two. It was so pushed, cramped and out right bland and more. At first read great, leave it at that though. Disappointing!
Highly Different--Try it!.......2003-10-05
From the moment you first open the book, you'll see it's like no other. Sure, manga plot is often recycled, with suicide, wars, and really magical swords being especially popular, but Baby Birth is none of these. It's a fantasy manga, with the Apocalypse of the world on the brink of the horizon, but it's not what it may seem. The drawings are excellent--the artist really put a lot of effort into making this manga top-notch, and if you're one a fan of Planet Ladder or even Clamp, you should get this book. Like now.

In "Dwellings," Linda Hogan, whose last name is a type of home, showcases her uniquely feminist, naturalist, Native American perspective in a series of first-person narratives. Each addresses some aspect of our innate connection to the natural kingdom, either as an exploiter of it or a victim, like in fire and decay.
Hogan says caves are feminine, womb-like, and have the power to give visions and inspiration to those who dwell in them.
"We are welcome here. I love this inner earth, its murmuring heartbeat, the language of what will consume us. Above is the beautiful earth that we have come from. Below is heat, stone, fire. I am within the healing of nature, held in earth's hand."
Hogan's incisive, yet lilting prose yields nuggets of loamy golden-ness. The copy I read was dog-eared and underlined by its owner.

Linda Hogan, a Chickasaw novelist, essayist, and poet, writes some of the most beautiful prose of any living Americxan writer. When she writes nature essays, as in this collection, her style is not that of the journalist (like, say, John McPhee) or even the activist (Rick Bass). Instead, her words are imbued with beauty and wisdom and spirituality. While I hesitate to use the term "Native American writer" to describe Hogan because I believe any such terminology to be limiting, in her case it is necessary because her Chickasaw background informs so much of her work. The plains of Oklahoma, snakes, dreams, a suspicion of technology, and bats all feature prominently in her writing. Hogan doesn't always deal well with the specifics of ecology--she suggests, for example, that wolves never predate on livestock, which of course is an oversimplification of lupine behavior--but she writes extremely well about the importance of human beings seeking a spiritual connection with the natural world. I highly recommend this book, particularly to anyone wishing to teach high school students about the spirituality of nature.

Plus, Hogan is obviously an avid reader for her book is stuffed with other readers, scholars, and scientist's words and thoughts. Linda Hogan melds wonderful descriptions of the environment with poignant reflections on humans' place in the world and our relation with other beings in nature. Amazing, humbling, inspiring. Chapters on Caves, Wolves, "What holds the water, what holds the light," Bats, Creations, Walking. I highly recommend this book.
