Doug Scott's historic ascent (with Dougal Haston) of the South-West Face of Everest in 1975 brought him to the forefront of Himalayan climbing at a moment of transition. Their success was achieved from the basis of one of the last old-style expeditions to attempt a major new climb, but the evolution that followed totally transformed the way climbers tackled the greatest peaks.

During their descent Scott and Haston were forced to make a hazardous bivouac in a snow hole at the extreme height of 8750 metres. Normally this would have killed or crippled them, but by drawing on all their experience they survived it unscathed. It was thus clear that with a bolder approach based on better techniques, and also by taking advantage of improved equipment, the menace of high altitude could be handled. Thereafter, an elite international group, of which Scott was a leading member, began tackling the highest peaks in the rapid style used in the Alps. Scott soon completed a string of major climbs on Shishapangma, Shivling, Nuptse, and, notably, on Kangchenjunga, where his North Ridge ascent (with Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker) ranks among the great Himalayan climbs.

These successes could not have been achieved without a deep inner confidence and an instinct developed through years of experience in climbing throughout the world. He has visited the ranges of the Sahara and East Africa, Iceland, the great peaks of Canada, Alaska, and the Soviet Union, making important first ascents on Denali, Pik Lenin, and Mount Kenya. He has also maintained a continuing interest in big-wall climbing in Yosemite, the Rockies, the Dolomites, and Baffin Island.

But it is the Greater Himalayan range that has remained the central theme of his climbing, and over twenty-six visits he has climbed in its most fabled regions, including the Hindu Kush, Tibet, the Karakoram, Ladakh, and Bhutan. It is in this serene mountain remoteness, amongst people with a lifestyle so different from our own, that Scott finds the ideal atmosphere in which to savor and understand the aftermath of a big climb: being allowed to see that which is normally hidden by the complexities of modern life."

Scott is a killed photographer, and this new edition of his pictorial record of a remarkable climbing career has been keenly awaited. One of my favorite photographic volumes to date.......2000-08-24

This is not a paperback. Nor is it a hard-cover. Rather, it is a coffee table book measuring 12" x 9.5". With this in mind, I can fully excuse Scott for filling 70% of most pages with stunning photos, and the rest with text. This is not "a read".

Not only does this volume aid in picking out lines on various large peaks, but it shows Scott as he truly is: an introspective hippie with a physique made for moutaineering. It stands to reason then, that Scott picks very hard and interesting lines on mountains all over the world, from snow and ice to big-walls, to high altitude.

If you are a mountaineer, you should have two books on your coffee table. This one, and Chris Bonington's "Mountaineer" in the same format. Then your friends might just understand why you climb.

Gorgeous pictures; Great climber; Boring Writer.......2000-06-30

Doug Scott is known as a "pure, aesthetic" climber; he prefers a simple climb with a few friends, rather than a seige of 100 sherpas and 1000 oxygen bottles. He has also led an amazing life. Therefore, I really wanted to like this book.

The pictures are fantastic, but the problem with this book is Scott's writing. He is terrible at conveying what it really feels like to be way up in the freezing and isolated Himalaya, or hanging from a vertical rock.

A great writer like Jon Krakaur or Joe Simpson can spend pages explaining how their fingers were numb; their bladders were full, but it was too cold to do anything about it; the wind slammed the tent against their faces, etc., so you know what it really feels to spend a shivering night up in the mountains. In contrast, Scott will say, "and so we spent the night on the mountain and it was really cold. So, the next day......." The writing is cold [no pun intended], and rather boring.

For readers interesting in great mountaineering writing, I would recommend Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaur; Touching the Void by Joe Simpson and/or The Last Step by Rick Ridgeway, all well written. They cover less geographical ground than Scott, but they are all great reads.

Majestic Mountains.......1999-11-28

Doug Scott was capable of taking me to a place I have never been before (for now). His writings skills may not be Hemmingway (nor mine), but in combination with the photographs, this book made my heart race with passion. My love for the mountains was established way before I read this book, but the book rekindled the flame. Unlike INTO THIN AIR's Jon Krakauer, Doug Scott is the superman of climbers. While you are reading, scenes appear, places with such beauty and excitement glare into your eyes and mind. Hey a picture is worth a thousand words. Doug Scott made this book a true LIFES adventure.

Made Everest seem boring.......1999-06-29

As an avid reader of climbing books, I found this book to be written in an extremely boring style. The frightening overnight bivuac on the mountain is summarized in one sentence. The pictures are gorgeous, but if you want to feel like you are really on the mountain, read Addicted to Danger by Jim Wickwire or K2 by Jim Curran. Scott's book goes on the coffee table, but Krakaur goes on the bedside table. Scott is a great climber but a borrrrrring writer. Just my 2 cents.

Great photos, disappointing text.......1999-05-13

This is very much a pictorial account of Doug Scott's long and impressive climbing career. The hundreds of photographs range from very good to spectacular, and benefit from the large format of the book. Not only are there fine shots from the Himalayas, but also from such far-flung areas as the Hindu Kush, the Cilo Dag mountains of Turkey, Chad, Baffin Island, and Australia. Wonderful as the photos are though, Himalayan Climber suffers from Scott's too brief and often bland descriptions of his climbs.

This is an excellent book on teaching vocabulary to all grade levels. It is check full of ideas you can implement immediately with just enough philosophy to make the strategies understandable. I highly recommend it!!

Bringing Words to Life.......2007-07-22

While I appreciated the premise of the research outlined in this book, and have no doubt the approach recommended would be effective, I question the practicality for application in a classroom. It seems that it would take a considerable amount of planning and cumbersome documentation particularly with younger children or multiage classes. I plan to try to implement some of the suggestions and like the idea of working to help children establish their own definitions, moving away from traditional dictionary definitions that are only confusing for young students.

I read this for a graduate class and found it to be a quick, easy read. The authors give you simple ways to enhance your vocabulary instruction. I would recommend this book to teachers at all levels but especially those working 3rd grade and above.
