Book Description
During the last fifteen years, researchers have shown increasing interest in the exchange relationship between the employee and employer. Until now, the literatures examining the employment relationships have tended to operate either from the employer or the employee perspectives and have typically approached the topic from a single discipline be it psychology, sociology, human resource management, organizational behavior, industrial relations, law or economics. Failure to consider multiple perspectives has created a fragmented understanding of the employment relationship. This volume incorporates social exchange, economics, industrial relations, legal, and justice theory perspectives. In addition, chapters have been written by authors that reflect the full international body of research on the employment relationship and provide information about legislation, governance, and cultural differences across nations. The conceptual and empirical foundations for understanding the employment relationship from these different theoretical perspectives facilitates the establishment of the convergent and discriminant validity of the psychological contract and the investments-contributions models of the employment relationship in relation to related exchange constructs such as perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange. The interdisciplinary and international nature of the employment relationship literature reviewed and integrated in this volume provides a richness that is rarely available in studies of the workplace, and many new and provocative ideas are presented in this volume. Bringing these perspectives together provides greater comprehensiveness, clarity, synthesis and understanding of the employment relationship. This volume is designed to promote the thinking of scholars in the employment relationship area. It will also have relevance to practitioners primarily through the implications of this multi-disciplinary perspective. The volume offers implications of a holistic, multi-disciplinary, international, conceptualization of the employment relationship for theory development, empirical research and measurement, and policy.

Book Description
The Employment Relationship presents a controversial perspective on an area hitherto dominated by industrial relation experts and radical sociological theorists.
Exploring some of the metaphors commonly used to describe the employment relationship, Peter Herriot argues that it is often their dark rather than their bright side which best expresses how employees really feel. Human resources sometimes feel like human discards! The main culprits in this situation, he suggests, are the top managers who fail to treat employment as a relationship and employees as individuals. He concludes that management rhetoric must be replaced by real dialogue and points to three issues where this is most crucial: employee compliance, contractual inequalities and the need for organisational change.
The Employment Relationship will make essential reading for all managers and occupational psychologists. It will also be of interest to students of work psychology, human resource management or organisational behaviour.

Multi-site swine production volumes represent a sine qua non of 20th century animal husbandry achievement. Differentiating the techniqes applied to cattle or any other ungulates. Whilst at Cornell, I had the good fortune to hear Dr. Harris speak, and this book reflects both the intellect and the ability to convey information that one appreciates when attending a lecture. For me, the academic study of this topic is fulfilling on a number of levels, from the dry but necessary scientific research and publication, to the earthy warmth one feels in the pen, I share the attachment of Dr. Harris to this subject, and post-doc, intend to make it my life's work. Bravo Dr. Harris!
Multi-Site Pig Production.......2000-05-15
D.L. Harris has summarized the advantages and challenges associated with multi-site production in an easy to comprehend manner. This book will provide readers of the science of disease transfer, weaning ages required to utilize the system to lower cost, and provide targets that the industry needs to remain competitive in the future. Dr. Harris shows the "sytematic" approach to making multi-site production successful and includes all aspects of the "flow" that must be adapted to making the system work. Bits and pieces or partial application may ad some benefit but a complete follow through will provide optimum results.

Book Description
Habitat loss and fragmentation arguably pose the greatest threats to biological diversity. Agriculture is a dominant land use that, along with urban sprawl and residential development, can reduce the amount and connectedness of natural areas required by many native species. Unfortunately, progress has been slow in integrating nature and biodiversity protection into community planning in intensively farmed regions, especially in America 's heartland. Seldom do issues related to species conservation receive consideration during local planning activities. Lack of progress stems partly from scientific inadequacies in understanding the dynamics of complex landscapes, and from a lack of engagement of non-scientific stakeholders by scientists and modelers. The result of these shortcomings is a critical disconnect of conservation issues from the planning infrastructure. This book provides a blueprint for advancing conceptual understanding of conservation in agricultural regions. It accomplishes this with a two-pronged approach: first, by developing spatially structured models that acknowledge the link between socio-economic drivers of land-use change and the dynamics of species occupying agricultural landscapes with abrupt changes in land cover (i.e., sharp edges); and second, by providing guidelines and examples to enable scientists to effectively engage stakeholders in participatory learning and planning activities that integrate biodiversity with other, more traditional considerations. The structure of the book is truly interdisciplinary, linking the efforts of ecologists, economists, statisticians, mathematicians, and land-use specialists.

In this bible for telemark skiers, author Paul Parker covers everything you'll need to know to free your heel.
Customer Reviews:
This book doesn't age --- it just gets a new edition.......2006-11-04
I am pretty sure a new edition will come out soon, given the rapidity of gear evolution. The basics remain the same --- the technique just gets refined and simplified over time. Except for the telemark technique, this book can be read with profit by any skier, alpine or nordic.
Truly a bible of free heel skiing.......2004-01-13
Great book that all free heel skiers should read. Eye opener is that "Telemark" is just a turn - free heel skiing is hell of a lot more. Good reasoning why you should do the tele the way Mr Parker is proposing. This book changed my free heel skiing for good.
The Bible of Learning to Telemark........2002-03-12
The book is wonderful.
It is abound with simple, practical, and easy to remember helpful hints;I call them little golden nuggets of information that you take with you on each run, or even turn, as you practice your downhill ski skills On or Off Piste.
It also has a wonderful introduction to the history of skiing and a very honest analysis/assessment of telemark gear.
It is incredibly suited for all beginner and intermediate tele-skiers.
it works!.......2001-11-29
Using only this book and a few random tips from strangers, I picked up telemarking in two days. (I also started with 25 years of alpine experience.) This book is clear, concise, and effective. It made all the difference in the world in getting me skiing expert trails reasonably well by the end of my second day. I am nowhere near handling moguls, glades, ice, cornices, etc., but I did have twenty or so graceful, linked turns in a steep bowl
Very good, comprehensive book.......2001-03-14
If you are an intermediate Telemark skier, and wants too ski down that steep-brakable-crust slope: this is the book for you.
Very good book in describing different techniques for all conditions. There is an extensice beginners-part as well.
Thank for the book, Paul
Book Description
For lovers of words and seekers of wisdom, a lively history of aphorisms—the shortest and oldest written art form—and the intriguing people who have penned them, from the Buddha to Emily Dickinson.
Starting with the ancient Chinese and ending with contemporary Europeans and Americans, The World in a Phrase tells the story of the aphorism through spirited and amusing biographies of some of its greatest practitioners: Americans like Ambrose Bierce, Emily Dickinson, and Mark Twain and Dorothy Parker; great French aphorists like Montaigne, La Rochefoucauld, and Chamfort; philosophers like Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein; as well as prophets and sages like the Buddha, Lao Tzu, and Jesus. Though it’s an ancient art form, the aphorism is as spritely and as apposite as ever. Challenging and subversive, aphorisms deliver the short, sharp shocks of old forgotten truths. They are literature’s hand luggage: they’re light and compact, you can take them anywhere, and they contain everything you need to get through a rough day at the office or a dark night of the soul. But more than just a literary history, The World in a Phrase is a personal memoir of how aphorisms changed Geary’s life—and how, if not for an aphorism by W.H. Auden, he might never have met his wife. In our modern age of drive-through culture, pre-digested soundbites, and manufactured sentiment, The World in a Phrase explores how aphorisms still retain the power to instigate and inspire, enlighten and enrage, entertain and edify.
Customer Reviews:
Not about writing........2007-09-14
I purchased this book to learn more about aphorisms - examples, insights, understanding. I hoped to be entertained with numerous gems written by insightful people. Instead, I received a philosphy book from some hippy who seems to have abandoned his Christian upbringing. The man is a rebel, and I respect that, I just would not have purchased this book had he been honest enough to tell me what he was writing about.
Thought Provoking.......2007-01-07
Very interesting, and Philosophical. James Geary gives brief backgrounds on the authors and insight into their ways of thinking. Keep a dictionary close. I found this book to be an amazing vocabulary builder.
One man's search for meaning.......2006-11-02
The 'Publisher's Weekly' review pretty well says it all: this man is obsessed with aphorisms (a sort of bite-sized parable). I felt like the author got in his own way, though; in his enthusiasm for the form, he filled the book with his flowery descriptions (bring your dictionary), and managed to personally contribute very little of substance. I realize that aphorisms play with language to say the absolute maximum in an absolute minimum of space, but primarily the author only manages to communicate his enthusiasm for the form. Perhaps that's the point, but I'm not sure.
Writing Your Own Bible.......2006-04-20
James Geary explores the history and development of aphoristic expression in this useful little book, and he does so by both entertaining and informing in the way aphorisms do. His last chapter is about the Jefferson Bible, and it sums up his project very nicely. As Geary concludes in the end, "aphorisms are the elixir of life," for only they "tell it like it really is." So reading Geary's book can be like walking through a minefield populated with the most exquisite fauna, a bracing and hazardous experience that is also filled with wonder. Those who live in the warm embrace of received wisdom, and who comfort themselves with rosey reliance on conformity in thought and deed, will not enjoy this journey. But as the book points out in quoting Jenny Holzer, "playing it safe can cause a lot of damage in the long run." Reading this book now after having read many of the authors Geary surveys, and having learned to my delight of those unknown to me, I was encouraged to press on in my own way of thinking, to stop doubting myself. There is not a self-help book in the world that will bully you into your sense the way Nietzsche or Chamfort can with an absolute economy of words. Geary's book was such a breath of fresh air, especially in this age of spin and lies, because he brings the reader face to face with those who spoke directly without apology about the truth of the human condition.
Wonderful!.......2006-03-15
This book was amazing! Not only did it include quirky, enlightening, and thought-prokoking aphorisms, but it also gave a background about the writer of the aphorisms too. needless to say, this has sent me on numerous tangents wanting to learn more. I have bought four or five other books since based on what I read here. I'm sure I will be reading this one over and over again. Couldn't reccommend it enough.

Book Description
Arguments about the globalization of economic relations have become commonplace; part of the everyday diet of social science and public affairs alike. Citing the growth of multinational and transnational corporations, and the enhanced mobility of goods, services and money, proponents of the globalization hypothesis claim that capital now creates new forms of competition beyond the reach of state agencies and nationally organized forms of worker representation. Defined in this manner, globalization becomes a threat to the welfare state, to policies of full employment, and to national living standards. Taking a radically different tack, this timely and far-reaching volume reexamines the underlying assumptions of globalization arguments from a critical perspective. Alongside globalization, authors show, there persist tendencies towards the territorialization and re-territorialization of economic life, as well as the development of new organizing strategies by labor. Probing the complex relationship between the global and the local and investigating the changing dynamics of contemporary firms, labor, capital, and communities, the book also addresses the broader question of the difference that space makes in understanding society.

Book Description
The world of international management is no longer limited to jet-setting corporate trouble-shooters or seasoned expatriate managers. Virtually all business conducted today is global business. The need to understand the effect of culture on the practice of management has never been greater.
This book examines cross-cultural management issues from a psychological or behavioral perspective. It focuses on the interactions of people from different cultures in organizational settings and helps the reader gain an understanding of the effect of culture that can be applied to a wide variety of cross-cultural interactions in various organizational contexts.
The first section of the book describes the context in which the international manager functions including the major facets of the international management environment - legal, political, economic, and cultural. Culture is defined and demystified in practical terms and the reasons that cultures form and persist are discussed. The idea that cultural variation is not random but systematic is examined, as are the basics of social cognition as applied to cross-cultural interaction. Among the concepts discussed are selective perception, stereotyping, ethnocentrism, differential attributions, behavioral scripts, and cultural differences in motivation. The second section of the book focuses on the roles that dominate the activities of international managers: decision maker, negotiator, and leader. The process and behavioral aspects of negotiation are discussed in terms of the application of cross-cultural communication. The basis of communication, as concepts that transfer meaning across cultures, are presented as grounding for understanding negotiation across cultures. Western theories of leadership are contrasted with theories indigenous to other cultures, and a cross-cultural model of leadership is presented. The third section is devoted to challenges facing international managers including multi-cultural work groups and teams, the organization and design of international organizations, the unique influence of the multinational corporation on managerial roles, and the relationship of culturally different individuals to the firm. The challenges associated with the assignment of individuals overseas from both the perspectives of the firm and the individual expatriate are also explored. The final section of the book looks at the limitations of current management theory as it applies to international management and key methodological issues with regard to cross-national and cross-cultural research. The book includes extensive up-to-date references and a comprehensive index.
Customer Reviews:
Unjustified.......2003-03-02
It is a recommended reading in my postgraduate study of cross-cultural management. It has covered basic management principles such as communication process and organisational structure. However, the problem is that when readers have to pay GBP35 to buy this book, they deserve to learn more.
Wealth of insights.......2002-01-24
The book has a great wealth of insights. It is an excellent guidebook for international managers and also provides a well of ideas for researchers.
