Not sure it's needed for accounting majors.

I make a brief reference to Pacioli in my Accounting Systems class. In that Queen Isabella being one of the first venture capitalists, used double-entry accounting, a la Pacioli, to make sure she got a return, and saved her country and her reign.
I try to liven up why the study of accounting is important. It was interesting to learn that Pacioli "only" documented and popularized the Venetian Method of accounting, and did not invent it, as popularly thought.

Any book regarding the suject of Accounting is worth while reading. As an Accounting Major in school we simply learn how to apply theory but not the history of Accounting. Luca Paciola was the father of Accounting and he set forth the rules that we still use today. A book that should be recommended reading for Accounting major's.

A research focus on hazards, risk perception and risk minimizing strategies is relatively new in the social and environmental sciences. This volume by a prominent scholar of East African societies is a powerful example of this growing interest. Earlier theory and research tended to describe social and economic systems in some form of equilibrium. However recent thinking in human ecology, evolutionary biology, not to mention in economic and political theory has come to assign to "risk" a prominent role in predictive modeling of behavior. It turns out that risk minimalization is central to the understanding of individual strategies and numerous social institutions. It is not simply a peripheral and transient moment in a groupâ€™s history. Anthropologists interested in forager societies have emphasized risk management strategies as a major force shaping hunting and gathering routines and structuring institutions of food sharing and territorial behavior. This book builds on some of these developments but through the analysis of quite complex pastoral and farming peoples and in populations with substantial known histories. The method of analysis depends heavily on the controlled comparisons of different populations sharing some cultural characteristics but differing in exposure to certain risks or hazards. The central questions guiding this approach are: 1) How are hazards generated through environmental variation and degradation, through increasing internal stratification, violent conflicts and marginalization? 2) How do these hazards result in damages to single households or to individual actors and how do these costs vary within one society? 3) How are hazards perceived by the people affected? 4) How do actors of different wealth, social status, age and gender try to minimize risks by delimiting the effect of damages during an on-going crisis and what kind of institutionalized measures do they design to insure themselves against hazards, preventing their occurrence or limiting their effects? 5) How is risk minimization affected by cultural innovation and how can the importance of the quest for enhanced security as a driving force of cultural evolution be estimated?

Burn it for warmth in cold winter night.......2007-08-19

Before buying it I've read all the reviews and they all gave it 4 or 5 stars. The author's credentials also seem to back up these reviews. After going through the chapers I then realized that it's specifically designed for people whose educational level is below or at that of GED, such as middle and high school dropouts. As another reviewer mentioned, it works for ESL students as well. It amazes me that they can't be honest on what audience they're trying to target, but instead using the misleading name like Grammar Bible, and even in the description on the back cover they claim it's everything anyone would ever need to understand English grammar; how arrogant and narrow-minded is that? This is an insult to people's intelligence and bordering on being a scam.

A real letdown.......2007-07-17

The name "Bible" is misleading; it should be "Basics" instead. An ESL student might find this book helpful, but overall too shallow and elementary. At least teachers and writers don't need this.

Great reference book for anyone who wants to get it right........2007-07-03

This book is an excellent reference resource. It is not necessarily a book you should buy to read like a novel. The explanations and examples are clear and detailed. Buy this book for your son/daughter who might be starting high school or college. Do not buy this book if you think you already know everything there is to know about grammar. Otherwise, you will just end up finding some egotistical way to "put down" the book and its intended audience.

Very basic and indicative of the ignorance that plagues the United States.......2007-05-17

Based on the reviews, I opted to purchase this book. I wish to embark on a possible freelance writing career and I need all the help I can get. I have purchased several books to improve my skills and on the list was a decent reference relating to grammar.

I was excited when this along with several other books arrived. I thumbed through several pages and I said out loud: It must get better than this! I have to say of the 512 pages I found maybe a dozen that were useful. The beginning of the book talks about the classification of nouns of all things. I am sorry but if you over the age of eight and don't know the difference between a proper noun and a common noun, you may as well give it up now.

Further, the authors devote a large section to verb agreement. Once again, this is something you should have mastered prior to reaching junior high.

I am by no means an expert in correct grammar usage hence my desire to purchase a book to help me out. My search will go on as I am promptly returning this to Amazon and will most likely buy "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" by Sidney Greenbaum.

Description:
Energy consumption in the residential sector is one of the main parts of the total consumption in China. In this study, China is divided into seven regions according to the climatic characteristics. Using statistical data, the annual consumption of electricity, coal gas, LPG, natural gas, coal as well as energy for district heating in urban residences in different regions is analyzed. The relationship between the annual energy consumption per household (UEC) and heating degree-days was examined for China, Japan, Canada, and the United States. The conclusions of this study are: (1) the values of UEC for the urban areas of China are between 11 and 24GJ per household per year in 1997; (2) the consumption of coal has been decreasing and consumption of electricity, gases has been growing since 1990s; (3) the UEC on the secondary energy basis tend to decrease, while that on the primary energy basis keeps on growing; (4) the regression equations for UEC of residences in the USA, Canada, Japan, and China were developed for 1997; and (5) in 1997, the average UEC for the urban areas of China is 17.2GJ, which is about 39, 16, and 12% as much as that of Japan, the USA, and Canada in 1997, respectively.

Throughout the second half of the 20th century, fundamental differences in values and policy can be discerned in British-German relations. For historical, political, and economic reasons, the collective memories of both nations have retained very different identities and attitudes towards each other and towards the European continent and European integration. Yet, Britain is one of the most significant European partners for Germany and Germany is of great importance for Britains role in Europe. This book focuses on the influence of European integration on the policies of Britain and Germany towards each other. It considers British-German relations in the context of European integration in their historical dimensions since 1945. Britains ambiguous policy towards the GDR and Mrs Thatchers opposition to German unification are also discussed. In particular, the book focuses on the post-1990 relationship and examines the political, security related, economic and financial as well as the social aspects of the dynamic British-German relations in an ever more interdependent world. The influence of the US and France on both Germany and Britain and their European policies is therefore considered in detail. This book offers interesting and challenging insights into the evolution of British-German relations within the context of European integration in the post-Second World War and post-Unification era. The book argues that throughout the latter half of the twentieth century Britain and Germany can be characterised as uneasy allies. It is only since the late 1990s Britain and Germany appear to have become genuine partners in the context of European integration.
