Based on twenty years of research experience, this unique, large format volume presents an up-to-date treatment of the biology, relation to the host, taxonomy and diagnostic features of protozoan parasites infecting fishes. By presenting definitions of all 151 genera, keys for the determination of all main groups of fish protozoa, copious illustrations and half-tone plates, and details on the technique of investigation, the book makes it possible to determine all protozoan parasites of fishes down to generic level.

In each genus, all important pathogenic species are dealt with, special attention being paid to their pathogenic action, and these are well documented by photomicrographs. A wide range of information is given on host-parasite relations, including data on pathogenicity of separate groups and species; and a host-parasite checklist enables a quick orientation on protozoa that may be encountered in one hundred economically important fish species.

In addition to the to the true protozoan phyla, an appendix lists a few organisms of uncertain position with alleged or possible relation to protozoa; altogether, 561 species are described.

This book is the first of its kind and should be invaluable reading for all fish parasitologists, fisheries biologists, aquaculturists and all others interested in protozoan parasites of fishes.

This book is helpful for a coach trying to start a program. There are many things that a new coach could use. The ideas worked well for Wooden 30+ years ago, so some of it could be outdated. But most of it is pretty good. The diagrams are confusing. You need a magnifying glass to follow the cuts of the players. More time could have been spent on the stall section.

Practical Modern Basketball.......2000-05-30

When you think of Success, you should recognize John R. Wooden as the leader in this area. This book expands upon his Pyramid of Success philospophy through his coaching regiment. Here again, what was the reason for UCLA's success. It was through the attention to detail and preparation. This book is very detail oriented. It is a working example of what it takes to become successful in coaching basketball. If you are coaching youths that are below the high school ranks, then this book is probably to advanced for knowledge transfer. But, there are many drills, offensive sets and defensive alignments that are teachable to young basketball players. For coaches involved in youth leagues, CYO, AAU, Intramurals, Junior High School, this book can help if you are trying to improve upon specific areas of teaching basketball. For instance, I found the 3-1-1 or "T" Half Court Zone Trap to be quite effective and provided a new look defense. There are a multitude of offensive sets, systems, and drills that may help as well. What you'll find in the book is there is no magic to winning as the label "Wizard" would suggest. It is accomplished through hard work and for coaches it is the details. Thanks again Coach Wooden.

This review is for the book, not the CD ROM or any other Bartlett's related electronic media.
If you consider yourself well read, it will not take you long to find out where "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" fails and be somewhat disappointed. If you don't read a lot, and need the book for school or reference, it will probably be adequate.
Certainly no book of quotations can be exhaustive and Bartlett's never claims to be, their are; however, some vital literary idioms that are noticeably missing.
Having covered the book's shortcomings, I cannot point out that as a resource and reference this book can be not only helpful, but indispensable for college students.
"Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" is like the King of the Cliff's Notes research, and just like Cliff's Notes, His Majesty should never be used to replace the material it summarizes. A basic understanding of the context of the book's quotations is far more valuable then the quotes themselves.

A wide-ranging survey of labor's response to globalization. Despite frequent hostility from traditionally pro-labor political parties and opposition on the part of union leaderships, the threatened demise of organized labor across the globe had been greatly exaggerated. The mid-1990s have witnessed a remarkable upsurge in workers' militancy. From France, Germany and Belgium to Korea, Canada, and Brazil, the international labor movement has shown surprising resistance to the global reorganization of capital and the savage assaults of neoliberal state policy. In this comprehensive study of current labor relations worldwide, Moody surveys both sides of the picket lines. He provides a measured assessment of multinational managements' strategies to downsize, introduce flexible production and compel workers to accept less pay for more work. He emphasizes the need, in the face of these changes, for international coordination among national unions and provides examples of where and how this had been achieved. A bracing riposte to conventional wisdom concerning the irresistible power of globalization, Workers in a Lean World is a definite account of contemporary labor relations on an international scale.

Kim Moody's "Workers in a Lean World" is a scholarly but highly readable critique of the contemporary labor movement and its struggle with capital. The author discusses numerous instances from around the world where employees have resisted management to support his contention that today's workers movement remains a potent historical force. In fact, the author points to new forms of worker organization to posit that the working class may be closer to throwing off the mantle of capitalist rule than one might suspect.

Mr. Moody is a labor researcher and activist who displays a great deal of knowledge and passion for the subject. He is the director of 'Labor Notes', an organization that publishes and sponsors conferences for labor leaders. The book benefits from the author's solid scholarship and case studies shared by real-life contacts with people who are active in making history today. Rarely is labor's side of the story told as intelligently, persuasively and compellingly as it is here.

Mr. Moody presents an unique analysis of postmodern industrialization. Like others, he points to the crisis of accumulation in the mid-1970s as a catalyst for change. Lean production utilizes information technology, cross-border production chains, and deskilled labor in an attempt to restore corporate profitability. But at this point, the author departs from most other analysts in a number of ways.

Mr. Moody challenges postmodern theorists by demonstrating that material production remains at the heart of capitalism. Citing a wealth of statistics, the author explains that the Fordist model remains vital and Taylorism is integral to the success of lean production. We are reminded of the age-old reality that labor's gain is management's loss; but while acknowledging that many jobs have been recently transferred overseas to low-wage countries, the author contends that it is not as easy for companies to relocate production as one might think. In fact, most job losses in recent years have been attributable to the implementation of computer technology. Rather, corporate PR and the threat of relocation is most often used by management to wring concessions from a largely insecure workforce that has become disoriented in the face of these rapid changes.

One particular powerful aspect of Mr. Moody's analysis pertained to his blistering critique of Human Resources Management (HRM), a "propagandistic" ideology full of "hype about worker autonomy and empowerment" (pg. 89). HRM has been successfully used by many companies to create a more easily exploitable workforce. In general, HRM coerces workers to share information with management, which all too often leads to speed-up and job loading at individual factories. Such knowlege then quickly spreads throughout the industry as examples of these so-called "best practices" are shared in management circles. But the underpaid, deskilled and overstressed workforce that ultimately results from an HRM project exposes the inherently lopsided nature of the labor/management relationship.

Mr. Moody compares and contrasts the union movement in the industrialized North with the newly-industrialized South. The author finds that many unions in the North (the U.S., Europe and Japan) have been coopted by management and consequently have lost much of their effectiveness. In contrast, the author highlights the successes of some of the more dynamic unions in the South (Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere) to contend that a form of social-movement unionism that combines political and economic goals may help secure a better future for the working class as a whole. Importantly, the author believes that the same cross-border production chains that enable globalization to flourish must be used by unions in the North and the South to share ideas, coordinate actions and achieve shared goals. While one may not be as optimistic as the author that such a coordinated worker campaign might gain the upper hand anytime soon, the strength of the author's work is such that one can clearly see the contours of the movement beginning to form and imagine that its eventual success may certainly be within the realm of possibility.

In short, "Workers in a Lean World" is a thoughtful book that is full of insight, sophisticated analysis and forward-thinking ideas about creating a more just and egalitarian society. Highly recommended.
