Great intro to statistics with a dry sense of humor.......2002-10-29

To start off with, this is one of the least friendly looking textbooks I've ever had. Appearances are deceiving, though, as this has become one of the very few textbooks I've read cover to cover. Schork and Remington have a dry sense of humor, and as close to a light, flowing style as can be expected from a statistics textbook.

Excellent statistic book for medical personnel!.......2000-04-08

Excellent book for the biological or health related researcher with a touch of humor scattered throughout making it quite easy to read. It is comprehensive, touching on the most useful statistical techniques with excellent, concise examples and easy to understand explanations. The text is appropriate for those with little previous knowledge of statistics while refreshing and informative for those with a bit more experience. You can not go wrong with this book!

The Greatest.......2007-08-27

Excellent story of a successfull runner from an under privilage country. The story of his rising to fame is heart warming and all youngsters in the USA should read it to understand how young people in other countries must often battle great odds to be able to climb out of their invironments and meet success in spite of and not because of. Very interesting story.

Not Very Inspiring.......2006-07-21

For those who are unfamiliar with Gebrselassie, they will find this book incredibly boring. I, an avid runner, found this book to be a pretty horrible tribute to the greatest distance runner in the last 25 years. Most running books describe races in quite detail and focus on each of the tiring laps that a runner endures. This book on the otherhand basically skips over that saying "Haile won this, got the world record...or Haile lost this, and all of Ethiopia was angry at him." It doesn't go into any detail though. Rather than Haile the runner, this book focuses on Haile the businessman which is not what he is known for nor is it was most people even care much about.

Geb is one of my five favorite runners of all time, but this book is a little sappy even for me. By all accounts, a phenomenal athlete and a great guy; but the author could have been a bit more objective. The writing is a bit uneven as well.

Good but not "the Greatest".......2005-06-30

I enjoyed this book but did not find it to be a compelling read. I found the writing somewhat choppy as if Mr. Dennison had strung together a number of individual pieces. Gebrselassie can certainly take his place among the greatest runners of all time and this book is a fine tribute.

Excellent Running Book.......2005-04-11

As a runner, I love a good running book. The Greatest - the biography of Haile Gebrselassie - a man who dominated distance running for a decade - was extremely inspiring. It balanced the racing with the personal story of Haile, along with a great overview of the Ethiopian running scene and the opportunities and challenges facing the country. In addition to being a champion athlete, Haile has become a very successful Ethiopian businessman and the vignettes about his businesses, why he does them (when he clearly doesn't have to), and how he is focused on continuing to help Ethiopia evolve as a country was powerful. Heroic running, riveting race stories, good Ethiopian history, the passing of the torch of a champion to the next generation, and a guy that everyone would like - what more could you want from a running biography?

Favorable review of the last volume of the RanVan trilogy.......1999-01-30

Wieler is one of today's best YA authors. She hooked me in with Bad Boys (still one of the best YA novels I've read about teens dealing with homosexuality and homophobia) and the RanVan trilogy does not disappoint. This is the final volume in which RanVan must resume his place as knight to help his nemesis, Lee Dahl, from RanVan: Worthy Opponent. He's also fallen in love, and this time it's for real. The language is what makes Wieler's stories. She has a great ear for teen-speak and for situations that are true to her characters. For teenage boys who love video games and who are looking for good adventure, RanVan is your man.

The best of the RanVan trilogy.......1998-01-10

In the third volume of the RanVan trilogy, Rhan is 18 and has moved away from home in Thunder Bay to Calgary, where he is enrolled in Cinema, Television, Stage, and Radio at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Rhan wants to become a television cameraman. In "Magic Nation" Rhan runs into his old adversary, Lee Dahl, the Iceman, who draws Rhan into a world of corruption, racism, and murder. Rhan also meets a girl, Jen, and tries to sort out his first "grown-up" relationship. The magic that was present in the first two books is still here in "Magic Nation", and Rhan is still struggling to understand what his special powers are and what they mean.

If you enjoyed the first RanVan books, you should definitely read this one. Diana Wieler's novels should be read by all, teens and adults alike, because the characters are strong, realistic, and appealing, with all the strengths and weaknesses that we see in ourselves. When you finish, you will be sad that the RanVan books are only a trilogy!

This book definitely deserves a 10!

Singapore is a shopping paradise. The nation's many modern world class shopping malls offer a rich cornucopia of goods replete with leading brand names. Sitting astride the crossroads of the Eastern and Western world Singapore has long been a station for trade and cultural flows. Since 1819 and the arrival of the British it has been a city of the mercantile age.

Goods and services are the life blood of the city and its well being and raison d'etre center on these; Singapore is after all the world's largest port in terms of shipping tonnage, or at least competes toe to toe with Hong Kong for that title.

Chua Beng Huat an academic at the National University of Singapore has brought together a selection of his essays on the consuming habits of Singaporeans. He shows some of the meaning that getting and showing possessions brings to Singaporean lives. He discusses food, clothing, the Singapore presence of the globally ubiquitous McDonald's, deals with uses of language (Singlish, Hokkien) and class, and local cinematic representations of Singaporean culture and society. He deals with the interactions of culture in Sinagpore and the influence of the Japan-Hong Kong-Taiwan-Korean-China axis on local youth culture. He helps show us how multiple layers and registers of cultural exchange play out in Singapore.
