A must when hiking the West Coast Trail.......2004-12-02

I attended a UofC Outdoor Centre slideshow on hiking the West Coast Trail. The presenter had hiked the trail 11 times, and highly recomended this book. He said the only place you could find it was on the ferry (?). There are several editions ('80, '89, '94) and I don't know the difference. Make sure the copy you get has waterproof pages (I'm unsure about the early editions!).

This is an excellent guidebook, which unlike most, doesn't contain aquarium shots, stock photos and retouched photos. If you want a handy easy to read book which covers 99% of the typical sealife you'll find in the Pacific Northwest - this is it!

Pretty "Good".......2003-07-03

I enjoyed this book. It was exectly what I expected, a little bit of insight, a little bit of instruction and a little bit of personal observation.

It is a great book for any new coach or someone looking to get some ideas, but it wont make you a better coach or change your life.

Good new coach book with many team building exercises.......2003-01-21

I read this book after reading Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions and Lauren Gregg's The Champions Within. This book is better for the new coach who may be just forming their coaching attitudes and style. For coaches of totally dedicated Premier level teams or higher, the other two books are probably better. Catch Them Being Good shares many of the viewpoints of the other two books on building teams, motivating players, and forming strong positive attitudes. The other two books had better technical information and (perhaps because I read them first) struck me more powerfully than this one. This book was more readable for a beginning coach. I think the team building exercises are a real plus and are the biggest items I will take away from reading this book.

Ok, this book is wonderful. Tony and Colleen put it all together for you coaches and parents out there! The truth in black and white. I am a product of this type of coaching. I was blessed to have been a soccer player who was led by Dr. Colleen Hacker at Pacific Lutheran University. She caught me being good more often than bad and I thrived mostly as a young woman but also on the soccer field. The book takes you through the life of a season from the very beginning to the end. Tony gives examples of experiences he has had with players/coaches on the US National Team. A valuable tool and great food for thought.

I agree. The author seemed to try to write deeply and it came out horribly. I had never found a truely awful book before this one. I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Spare yourself.

I'm not really sure what the message of this book was. I got the impression the author was trying to be really deep, but it just came off emo. I was relieved to be done reading it. The author couldn't seem to stick with one theme or message. He seemed too taken with his own brilliance to bother with that. I felt like there was a lot of author intrusion, "telling" me the "moral of the story" or deeper meaning as if he couldn't trust me to figure it out on my own. It would have been more satisfying with less author intrusion.

Also there is a thinline between poetic language and purple prose. Some things he hit outof the ballpark, others came off maudlin and emo. I also didn't reallybuy this particular male author trying to get into a female character'shead. It fell flat.

Could have been MUCH better. .......2006-02-06

I'm not in the habit of bashing books, but seriously, reading this book was like watching a suspense movie on fast-forward. That's to say there were a lot of good scenes, but they were so rushed, and disconnected that it was very hard to follow. The characters were flat, and there wasn't one that I could relate too, especially not Freda which is sad because she is the main character. The story seemed unrealistic at times, and so hastily thrown together that I found myself reading it only because I didn't want to waste the $6 bucks I spent on it. I would recommend checking it out of the library or borrowing a copy from someone if you MUST read it.

A very clear vision.........2004-04-03

I understand this book to be a very clear description of what is missing in the way the international financial organizations address the problems of developing countries. But there is more to say about one of the core problems in our countries and that is the weakness or the lack of institutions and as a result of this ..corruption and worst....impunity. Politicians no matter what party..protect each other. A lot of people's money goes to the pockets of a few ... money that should be spent in education and health. Some of this money comes from the WB , IDB , etc...

Giving it a little more thought..maybe this kind of arrangement is the best situation for these corrupted third world politicians and for the big multinational firms and financial institutions that lend them money...to keep the people in poor countries ignorant and illiterate so that the big firms can keep their advantages with unlimited cheap labor pools. Sure , maybe this situation is viewed as a comparative advantage or just as business strategies by the big firms..but for our own politicians-gangsters ....this is a major crime and should be treated as such...If we just could !!!

Why keep lending money to be used by these thieves?? Well, maybe some goes back to the source...banking accounts in developed nations or comsumption of luxury goods manufactured in the hometown of some of the top brass in some Bank. Who knows?? Believe me.. ,it is not funny to see the son of some new-rich state official driving the last model Lexus SUV with your money!!! Why we the people do not do something about it?? How?? Going to the corrupted legal institutions or to the corrupted police?? Going to the streets and making justice with our own hands and then be accused of terrorists or leftist anti-free market mob and risk an invasion by the US Marine Corps??? Voting??? Give me a break!!! We often see on TV the prez of the USA drinking coffee and chating with some these third world politician-mobsters in his oval office ....Why???

Mr. Stiglitz certainly has clarified and explained the problems we face ...but the solutions are not easy to undertake. There are too many factors involved and the one that could make a difference...to change the mindset of the people...means nothing less than a mental rebirth and a total destruction of all cultural heritage....And this could take centuries....or some sort of dictatorship.... Is there any hope for us???

Thought and Works of Chairman Joe.......2003-03-07

Stiglitz, who is the former Chairman of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers and Chief Economist of the World Bank, won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics (younger than Milton Friedman had been when he won his Nobel). This moderate pragmatist can hardly be called a soft leftie and yet his stinging attack on the IMF and the World Bank (both organizations intensely disliked by Republican rightwingers) is both surprising......and perfectly justified, in my view. He develops this theme more fully in his other book "Globalization and Its Discontents," while this small book is a good extract of his economic philosophy. In his many public speeches and statements Chairman Joe lends the full weight of his considerable authority to China-boosters and China-lovers everywhere. But his frequently expressed optimism of China's economic prospects is not his main point - he uses China as an example to show why and how you can avoid messing things up if you use the right methods.

Manipulating the Market provides a new, more fruitful way to study economic sanctions. Instead of asking the traditional question "Do sanctions work?," it uses neoclassical economic theory, the insights of new institutional economics, and an intensive analysis of sanctions in five major Rhodesian markets to explain the more important problem of how target governments and private actors respond to the imposition of economic sanctions.

The Rhodesian crisis was one of Britain's thorniest and most important foreign policy issues in the 1960s and 1970s. The oil embargo caused a major political scandal. Yet the sanctions era, and especially the motives and performance of the white Rhodesian regime, are almost entirely unexplored in the historiography of southern Africa. Manipulating the Market contributes to the study of this period while addressing the broader theoretical question of the utility of economic sanctions.

Economicsanctions are an extremely important but poorly understood instrument of state craft. Without the aid of strong causal theories that explain how and why economic sanctions influence the behavior of target actors, policy makers cannot accurately forecast how these actors will respond to sanctions, assess the tradeoffs that arise from imposing sanctions, or improve their ability to use economic sanctions wisely. Manipulating the Market redresses this shortcoming by showing how economic sanctions generate strong societal demands for new institutions to regulate the market, and how the target government can then exploit these institutions to capture the political loyalty of powerful domestic groups. Without dismissing economic sanctions as a foreign policy tool, the author explains why devastating economic sanctions often strengthen rather than weaken target regimes.
