Book Description
A classic work, which presents the case for population growth rather than the impact of new technologies being the primary mechanism of agrarian development within traditional communities.
Customer Reviews:
Modern classic.......2000-01-10
Ever since Malthus most people have believed that increasing population slows or even reverses economic development. However in 1965 a young Danish economist wrote this small book questioning this orthodoxy. She showed that over most of history the effect of increasing population has been positive. Most serious demographers and economists now accept that she was right. It is tragic that the general public and population doomsayers have still not got the message, and persist in pushing family planning down the throats of the poor in the vain hope that it will help economic development. This book is a modern classic.

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of an International Astronomical Symposium devoted to the interactions between physics and dynamics in the solar system, especially with regard to the small bodies (asteroids, comets, meteors). These two topics were traditionally considered as almost independent, but their interactions are increasingly being reviewed as the key to an understanding of the formation and evolution of the solar system. For instance, the rotational dynamics of planets have a profound influence on their climate. On the other hand, a good understanding of the complicated dynamics of asteroids and the identification of families of bodies born from the break-up of a parent body may tell us much about the formation and the evolution of the solar system. All these, and several related questions are discussed in these proceedings, which will be of interest to both physicists and dynamicists.

Book Description
Dr. Bechtel's book is the first published on the subject of reptile and amphibian variations that occur naturally or through selective breeding. The text contains enough basic biology to help the reader understand the discussion of the various mutations. These animals with conspicuously altered colors and patterns are often quite beautiful. The rarer and more bizarre anomalies and mutations are described in this fascinating book which opens a window on this developing and complex field of inquiry. Profusely illustrated, this book covers an arcane subject from the author's personal perspective.

Bechtel's "Variants" book a must for herpetoculturalists........1998-11-25
Dr. Bechtel provides a great deal of insight on the patterns and colors of herps especially as to the way these characteristics are inhertited. Bechtel's background as a dermatologist and his lifetime of work with his interest in herpetoculture make him uniquely qualified to present a treatment of skin characteristics of reptiles and amphibians. There are sections of the book that provide a background in genetics for the layman and sections discussing the hertability of little known traits in seldom studied organisms. Color plates and diagrams effectively reinforce his text. Dr. Bechtel is known as one of the fathers of herpetoculture and his writings and work with corn snakes are widely regarded as seminal works. I highly recommend this book for serious herp people or anyone interested in the colors and patterns of reptile and amphibians.

Use the world's best training system from the world's top swim coach to become a stronger swimmer in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and individual medley.
Bill Sweetenham is the coaching force behind Australia's rise to international swimming acclaim. Now the national performance director of British Swimming, Sweetenham and coach John Atkinson detail their complete system of proven workouts, sets, and programs to improve stroke technique and race performance.
Championship Swim Training starts with benchmark test sets to evaluate ability, find specific training zones, and plot future training targets. Drill progressions and checklists for every stroke can be applied to individual swimmers or entire squads for technique enhancement.
The next section explains proper program planning for juniors through master swimmers and provides sample training sets for all levels of swimmers. The final chapters provide tapering tips, racing strategies, and dryland conditioning recommendations to take the guesswork out of constructing the perfect year-round program.

Championship Swim Training.......2007-07-20
Quite a good book - talks about a lot of details. Very interesting book it shows how to look at some details in a new light BUT sometimes leaves out a couple of new important details. However reminds me of one of the ways one of my older coaches used to coach (he was quite effective for the most part.)
Championship Swim Training.......2005-08-03
As a rookie coach I have found this publication invaluable. Although aimed at the 'top end' swimmer, with a little adjustment the lesson plans can be adapted to swimmers of any level. The drills are well laid out in a logical progression that benefits development of both the coach and the swimmer.
Bill Sweetenham shows an incedible understanding of the art and science of swimming and has managed to bring both aspects together in a clear and concise manual, can't recommend it highly enough
A great book!.......2005-07-07
This is definitely one of the best books I have ever seen for the swimming training!
Lots of training info but not much technique.......2003-10-14
Lots and lots of information if you're planning your season's training or you're coaching a team. There are drills for all the strokes, explanations of training zones, example workouts, and information on all aspects of swimming competitively (starts, turns, tactics, tapering,...).
What this book doesn't have, which is reflected in the title, is in depth descriptions of the intricacies of the strokes. If you want lots of that, choose another book. If you know how the strokes are performed but want some guidance on your training, this would be a good addition to your library.

Book Description
Impossible to read at one sitting, but utterly unputdownable, Schott's Original Miscellany is a unique collection of fabulous trivia.
What other book boasts an index that includes shoelace lengths, sign language, and the seven deadly sins; dueling and dwarves; the hair color of Miss America and the Hampton Court maze?
Where else can you find, packed onto one page, the names of golf strokes, a history of the Hat Tax, cricketing dismissals, nouns of assemblage, an unofficial motto of the US Postal Service, and the flag of Guadeloupe?
Where else but Schott's Original Miscellany will you stumble across John Lennon's cat, the supplier of bagpipes to the Queen, the labors of Hercules, and the brutal methods of murder encountered by Miss Marple?
A book like no other, Schott's Original Miscellany is entertaining, informative, unpredictable, and utterly addictive.

A book of surprises.......2007-02-19
I was alerted to the existence of this book in a novel (I've now forgotten the name), where one of the leading characters quoted from it. This piqued my interest and I decided to find out about it for myself. What a delightful surprise. The book is full of all sorts of odds and ends of information and delights by its' diversity. Once opened it's hard to put down as you move from one intriguing fact to another. A great reference book for the future and a great repository for information that otherwise society may have passed by. Well done Mr Schott.
I Don't Often Read, But This Book Changed Me.......2006-12-07
At my school's holiday sale, I found this book under the New York Times Bestsellers List. One of my friends had picked it up, and was reading it at a seat nearby, and when I walked over, he asked me, "Did you know that Pamela Anderson is Canadian?" What an intriguing way to start off a conversation, but when I looked over his shoulder, he was reading from Schott's Original Miscellany. Unfortunately, the book cost $15, and I could not afford it at the time, but I flipped through my own copy anyway, and found out: Woodrow Wilson is imprinted on the $100,000 bill, all of the villains in the James Bond series, the exact digits that make up Pi, and more! Fortunately for me, Amazon is selling the book for five dollars less than what my school's sale would have. However, I would not suggest this book if you aren't interested in little-known, non-important facts, because you will think that it is boring. On the other hand, do buy it if you enjoy that kind of information. As other reviewers said, it makes a great bathroom book, or something to pass the time with.

Eleventh-grader Brad Gold isn't exactly the most popular guy at school these days. When Brad agrees to interject some student opinion into Roblin High School's newly proposed Code of Conduct, he gets a crash course in personal agendas. In the name of the Code, he is abused by power-hungry teachers, ignored by apathetic students, and beat up by the school bullies--two gorilla girls named Mandy and Candy who are determined to maintain the Code's status quo. When the Code is finally approved, idealistic Brad discovers that having a Code of Conduct and enforcing it are two very different things: "I am beginning to notice a pattern here. The pattern is that having a Code of Conduct hasn't changed any of the conduct. The pattern is that everyone around here behaves just as badly as they always did. The pattern is that people around here have about as much mutual respect for each other as a flock of vultures all after the same few tasty bits of corpse." Bewildered by the whole process, Brad decides to chalk up his misadventures as a learning experience and never, ever set foot in politics again.
Perry Nodelman illustrates the absurdities and bureaucracy of high school politics with breezy humor reminiscent of that in Chris Lynch's Elvin comedies Slot Machine and Extreme Elvin. Many teens will find Brad's stab at representing the student body hilariously familiar, making Behaving Bradley a must-read for all past, present, and future student council members and their friends! (Ages 13 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
"Before I'm done, that Code is going to have staff in it about what teachers do and say, too. It's going to make sure that everyone has to behave just as well as everyone else. I'm getting everybody to respect everybody if I have to kill them all to do it"
Brad Gold just can't seem to catch a break at Roblin Memorial High! First he's recruited by his best friend, Coll, to get student input on a set of new school rules, a.k.a. the Code of Conduct. Then, after Brad reluctantly agrees to help him, Coll totally abandons the cause. Not only is Brad left with all the work, but with all the grief as well! The faculty doesn't exactly appreciate his "student input", and the students aren't much better -- it seems like everybody wants to use the Code to change everybody else. Of course none of this beats the anonymous threatening phone calls, or Brad's being terrorized by the school bullies, Mandy and Candy!
Brad has taken on a noble mission, but how far does he have to go to in his call for mutual respect? More important, will Brad survive this call?
Customer Reviews:
Narration Sometimes Amusing, Sometimes Too Cynical.......2007-06-07
Bradley, a high school junior, is completely fed up. In his high school no one seems to respect anyone else. Some people are constantly treated badly by others. The teachers are hypocritical and seem to enjoy making students feel bad about themselves. Now the administration has decided they are going to write and put into effect a code of conduct for the students, telling them how to behave. They pretend they want student input into the code, but they seem to be trying to sneak the code through without student approval. Bradley has a problem with that.
When Bradley attends a student council meeting to see what the student council is planning on doing about the code of conduct, he realizes that they aren't planning on doing anything at all, for fear of upsetting the teachers who give them grades and recommendations to college. But Bradley isn't going to stand for that, either. He tells the student council that they need to investigate the code and to actually get the student input the administration said they wanted.
The student council members are afraid to challenge the code, so they appoint Bradley as the head of the code input team. When he starts investigating, though, he realizes it isn't as easy as he thought. Teachers are angry at him for challenging them. Other students are threatening him for getting involved. And he is beginning to feel as though he may never make things better at his school.
I liked Bradley's style of narration, and I liked how he described the high school experience. I liked the other students and their unique quirks. I also liked Bradley's attitudes about himself and the way he viewed his world. However, Bradley was sometimes a little cynical for my taste and I didn't like the way he thought about Stephanie. I also hated the teachers in this book; they all seemed really awful and didn't care about the students at all.
Behaving bradley.......2005-05-24
I like the book `'Behaving Bradley''. What I really like is that you don't know what's going to happen next in the book. I think the author made a good use of foreshadow and there were a lot of twists in the story For example Shawn Gubert is the own that set Franko up against Bradley and the Code of conduct, which was a total surprise. I also admire the way the author uses characterization. He's really good at describing how the characters look like (for example Bradley always wears a baseball cap) but always who they are; by that I mean what they like or dislike and their emotions. The book is really funny! I love the way the author talks about a pretty serious subject (Code of conduct) and turns it into something funny.
What I dislike about the book is the ending. I think the ending should be a little more exciting and it should make more sense. For example Shawn Gubert, the guy that deals drugs, ends up being student council! I think that's kind of weird. The other thing about the ending is that there are still some pieces of the puzzle that are missing. Why did Candace drop out of school? Why did Greg Leskiw resign from student Council? Oh well, I guess not knowing everything does kind of make it more interesting.
Nothing short of brilliant.......2003-04-09
I picked up this book from the school library with the thought in my head that it was going to be incredibly corny and some "school appropriate" version of what being a teenager was like. I was wrong. Brad Gold is a normal teenage guy with insecurities and the tendancy to ogle gorgeous ladies. If you want to get inside a teenage guy's mind - this book will help. If you just want to laugh at the things he points out about how stupid our own teachers are - this book will help. If you just want to read a good book that is so funny you'll find yourself sharing passages with friends - this is your book. In fact, I read this book in about two days, and I'm the type of guy who will read a maximum of about 10 pages a day - and that's when I really like the book. This book is amazing. Give it a try.
Funny and authentic if you can get past the cover and plot.......2001-03-08
Brad Gold loves to wear a hat to school -- in fact, few people have seen him without it. When the school board decides to create a code of conduct with student input, Brad gets roped into assisting, and when the project gets dumped entirely into his lap, he struggles to create something the students and the faculty can be happy with, making sure to include his own clause that hats should be permissible. His formerly low-key life becomes high profile as he circles the halls, clipboard in hand, asking kids for their input. Bullies, crank phone calls, and meeting after meeting are just the start of his ordeal. The title of this book is very clever play on words; Nodelman also cleverly manipulates the plot to create a story with humor and mystery. Who is stalking Brad? And why won't he take off his hat? Brad's voice is authentic; Nodelman writes the way teens talk, and this is the biggest strength of the book. His first person narrative reveals the insults, beatings and discreditings that result from the project, make the reader very sympathetic and curious. The supporting characters are amusing, like the boy who has stayed back for 4 years in a row and spouts of words of wisdom from famous people, and the girl in the wheelchair who has a peeve with the girl's gym teacher. Still, the pacing of this well-written novel is a little slow, and although the book has a clear voice and is funny, I am not sure the plot will make teens want to pick up the book. And the cover, a boy with a clipboard and some students in the background, isn't thrilling either. If you like Rob Thomas, Ron Koertge and Gordon Korman, this is a book for you, but wait for the paperback.

Excellent "How To" advice.......2000-04-22
Using only the material contained in this book I negotiated (without the expense of lawyer, accountant or ex-IRS official) a fifteen cents on the dollar settlement of a past due account with the IRS. I found the advice clear and easy to follow. Bottom line: if you are having problems with the IRS this book is definitely worth buying and reading.

Book Description
Collected here in one volume are fifteen cutting-edge essays by leading academics which together clarify and defend the claim that freedom from poverty is a human right with corresponding binding obligations on the more affluent to practice effective poverty avoidance. The nature of human rights and their corresponding duties is examined, as is the theoretical standing of the social, economic and cultural rights. The authors largely agree in concluding that there is a human right to be free from poverty and that this right is massively violated by the present world economy which creates huge unfair imbalances in income and wealth among and within countries. This searing indictment of the status quo is all the more powerful as the authors endorsing it exemplify diverse philosophical methods and moral traditions and also highlight different aspects of poverty and global institutional arrangements. This volume will be of great interest and value to academics working in the fields of philosophy, political science and international relations, as well as to undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines. It will also be a crucial aid and challenge to practitioners in international governmental organizations (such as the UN and its agencies) and NGOs who think of their work in human-rights terms. Indeed, in view of the magnitude of the human rights deficit at issue, any moral citizen has reason to engage with the arguments of this book. And the book makes this possible for most in that, throughout, even the most complex aspects of rights theory is discussed in clear, direct language, making the text accessible to specialists and lay readers alike

Book Description
The huge foreign debt of developing countries has become a mechanism of domination and means of recolonization that prevents any meaningful and sustainable human development. The policies pursued by the indebted countries' governments have usually been decided by their creditors rather than by the authorities of the countries concerned. As for the initiative to lighten the debt burden, launched with much fanfare by the G7, the IMF and the World Bank under pressure from the largest ever petition in human history, it has made clear its limits. In 50 questions and answers, this book explains in a simple but precise manner how and why the debt impasse has been arrived at. Illustrated with figures, maps and tables, it details the roles of the various actors involved, the mesh in which indebted countries are caught, and the various alternatives to future indebtedness.

Flawed account of the need to cancel odious debts.......2004-11-19
Millet is the General Secretary of CADTM France (Comité pour l'Annulation de la Dette du Tiers Monde). Toussaint is the President of CADTM and a member of the International Council of the World Social Forum.
Their book examines the origins of the developing countries' debts, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's debt management, the efforts to reduce the debts and most important, the moral, political, economic and legal case for cancelling the debts.
As Fidel Castro observed in 2000, "The debt has already been amply repaid, given the terms under which it was contracted, the arbitrary and vertiginous growth of interest rates on the dollar during the preceding decade and the fall in prices of the basic products which are the fundamental source of revenue for countries still needing to develop. The debt has become a self-perpetuating vicious circle where new debts are taken out to pay off the interest on standing ones."
The authors quote the Russian legal theorist Alexander Nahum Sack who wrote, "If a despotic power contracts a debt, not according to the needs and interests of the State, but to fortify the despotic regime, to put down the population which would combat it, this debt is odious for the population of the entire State. This debt is not binding for the nation, it is the debt of a regime, the personal debt of the power which contracted it. Consequently, it falls when that power falls."
So in 1776, the new revolutionary state of the USA repudiated all the debts due to bankers in London. Similarly, in 1917 the Bolshevik government repudiated the Tsar's debts to British and French banks.
The authors cite a Touareg proverb, "What you do for the others without the others, is against the others." This hits the capitalist globalisers, and also the anarchists whose federal networks of committee and forums mirror their false internationalism.
The workers in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America do not need international committees or social forums to tell them what to do. They will decide when how they cancel their rulers' debts.

Book Description
Money has been an important part of modernity ever since it was exchanged for goods centuries ago. The evolution of systematically standardized monetized exchanges expedited trade between localities across space, standardized exchanges over time, and transformed work into wage labor. Money also generated the possibilities for specialization which were not possible under a system of barter, and solidified the emergence and development of the modern epoch. The contemporary changes in monetised exchanges, such as the electrification and globalization of monetary processes and financial markets, are unequivocal indicators of contemporary globalization. They are also some of the most important, and far-reaching, social changes of our time. Understanding and managing global financial flows and their impact of social spaces and people, is one of the most complex and difficult tasks facing politicians and social theorists today. Helping to meet the challenges posed by these changes, this important volume focuses on three questions central to the interplay between globalization, valorization and marginalization.

Customer Reviews:
Target market - author's comment.......2001-11-14
The text is aimed at practising international marketers, although also of benefit to students of more advanced or specialised international marketing programmes. The material is developed from years of line management and international marketing consultancy, including with many blue chip multinational corporations, across many global markets. Much of the material has been used, honed and customised, on many in-company team development programmes run by the author.
Hands on export marketing.......2001-11-14
The author clearly is a hands on international marketer, sharing his experience across many markets and aspects of international marketing. Whilst is is of good use for students of international marketing, particularly those of CIM and Institute of Export professional exams, I think it is particularly relevant for practisng marketers.
