4 out of 5 stars Good Book On TKD Forms........2006-03-29

I like this book as a general over view of the TKD forms. There are some changes on the way that Mr. Yates does the forms that do not exactly match the forms that are shown in the TKD encyclopedia so be careful. I use this as a basic overview but in association with the Jhoon Rhee books.

5 out of 5 stars best kata book I've seen.......2003-01-02

Superb book by one of the greatest kata men in America, Keith D. Yates. This book covers the Chunji forms (Chunji to Kae Beck) plus Japanese forms Chul-gi and Basai, with clear, easy-to-follow photographs and examples of applications. I've almost worn out my copy with use. For even the full experience, you'll want to combine this with Mr. Yates' 2-video set, "The Complete Video of Tae Kwon Do Forms/A History of Korean Karate in America." I strongly recommend this book for the serious martial artist.

              5 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2002-06-13

Shows all the chungi forms step by step. A great tool to brush up on your kata. I bought one and my friends kept borrowing it so it's almost worn out. I recommend this book to all serious ITF-style TKD practitioners.

              4 out of 5 stars it's still in print!.......2001-10-11

Grandmaster Yates has put together a superb reference containing all the Taekwon Do forms in an easy to read format. It's a valuable tool for the Taekwon Do student as well as for the black belt instructor. (It's not as detailed as Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee's 5-volume series, but it gives the same basic information for a lot less money -- and a lot less shelf space.) I highly recommend it. This excellent book is still in print at paladin-press.com.

This is an excellent book on ITF Katas. It contains katas from Chonji to Kae Beck. This book also contains many valuable pictures to assist in the understanding of these forms. I have told my friends and they too have bought this reference book.

                    #2: SAM

There's someone who wants me dead and he's probably going to

succeed very soon. There's something I have to do before I go,

and there's only one person I want to do it with.

                    Sam.

It all began in a funky brownstone on Perry Street where Gaia Moore lived with her foster family. But Gaia's little Village was brimming with people hell-bent on her own destruction, and her efforts to stay safe took her from parkside chess tournaments to greasy spoons, from the posh Upper East Side to scuzzy college dorm rooms. Along the way she managed to pick up a skate rat, a beauty queen, a hottie reformed school nerd, a recovered punk-rocker, and even a Soviet junior detective. None of whom turned out to be what he or she originally seemed....

Now, in one volume, keep pace with Gaia's latest adventures and revisit the origins of her unique story!

                    #26: ESCAPE

The men I love are gone, and this time, if anything bad happens

                    it's only one person's fault.

                    Mine.

1 out of 5 stars Give us a BREAK from the WORN-OUT PLOTLINE!!.......2003-06-08

OMG! This book really stretched my patience thin. Francine Pascal has been using the same, unnerving technique of hooking us readers...by lengthening the plot of Gaia in a never-to-be-normal life...again and again.Book #16 had me thinking that Gaia's life couldn't get any worse, but Pascal proved me wrong - nearly 11 times. Nothing's reasurring about this book, especially who Gaia loves or cares about. Yeah, Gaia kicks . . . of thugs who are mostly egocentric males, but even the action scenes are fading in adrenaline and originality. There's one thing to always look forward to in every new book in the series...(drumroll)...lengthened suspense of how Gaia's life/future will turn out, even if it means 20 more books in the series. If you like plodding, repeatedly worn plots, Pascal's plan to lengthen the series will be an abundant fountain of reassurement. To me, the books are a waste of time. Instead, I focus on reading a variety of books, even nonfiction. Read Tamora Pierce, COURT DUEL, Garth Nix for original plots starring R-E-A-L heroines everyday teen girls can relate to.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fearless-Flawless.......2003-04-18

A gripping plot that keeps you asking for more. It's Gaia like you never seen her before. You'll want to read Fearless in one sitting

                    2 out of 5 stars yikes.......2003-04-16

well I hate to say this, but this book was very very close to not even worth being in the series. Yes she had great plot twists. I loved how things kept going wrong for Gaia, and I loved her psycho analyasis talk after each time she was attacked. However it's been killed with her and Ed. If this relationship is brought back I think I will stop reading. DOn't get me wrong, that's why I read this far into the series. I lvoed Ed and Gaia together, but shes thrown so many complications in and so many breakups and problems it's lost intrest. I am left thinking no matter how other books go, Ed and Gaia will never work and that kills it for me.

                    1 out of 5 stars Giving Up!.......2003-03-14

ok, it's official. i'm giving up on happy endings for gaia and ed. their relationship goes down the drain in about every way possible. timing really ... in this book. gaia has no idea how lucky she was to have ed in her life. i even threw the book against the wall, vowing not to finish it or get the next one. well, needless to say...i finished it today and i'm kind of mad that i did. so, after months of reading 26 books in this series and STILL not feeling satisfied, i'm giving up. i'm not reading the next one. also, something is up with sam...and we still have no idea what happened to gaia's father. so, if you're an ed and gaia lover, like me, i don' think you'll care too much for this book. but, i do hope that you enjoy it more than i did.

                    5 out of 5 stars Disaster Strikes.......2003-03-11

It all begins with Gaia returning from her hellish visit from the hospital. She turns to Natasha for advice, yet Natasha neglects Gaia's wishes to call some contacts from the Agency. Natasha tells Gaia to just sit tight and wait it out, which we all know Gaia is not about to do. She then thinks of Tatiana and how she never puts up with ...and doesn't like to 'wait stuff out'. Natasha informs Gaia that Tatiana went out for coffee. Before leaving to seek out Natasha, Gaia gives Sam a little visit, making plans with him to talk about finding her father.
Gaia then heads to the local hangout coffee place; a place she tries to avoid. Naturally, the FOHs are there, but right in the middle of the gang...is Tatiana and Ed. she gets close enough to listen to their conversation, which is about Heather. Suddenly, Megan, a fellow FOH, gets an idea; to throw Heather a benefit, to help raise money for Heather's blindness. Gaia says that she doesn't think it's a good idea, in her strong-type-...ed-off get-the-hell-outta-my-face way. Jake comes along, out of no where and, as usual, pisses Gaia off. Just as she's about to throw a punch, someone grabs her arm. Ed. Draging her off to a quiet corner, he gives her a little kiss and tells her to calm down. But Gaia's attention is diverted to a certain man buying coffee, who seems oddly familiar. While Ed tries to grab Gaia's attention, she scans this guy and remembers that he's the EMT who told her that she couldn't ride in the back of the ambulance with her father. She thinks, automatically, that seeing him more than once in the past two days is a bit odd for her. Finally, by waving his hand in her face, Ed gets her attention and tells her that they are drifting apart. He tells her that they're gonna have a date, a REAL date, with Gaia wearing a dress and everything. She agrees, kinda.

There's a little snippet of the beginning. To find out the meaning of the title, read the book.

                      Description:
We show that any communication finding a value-maximizing allocation in a private-information economy must also discover supporting prices (in general personalized and nonlinear). In particular, to allocate L indivisible items between two agents, a price must be revealed for each of the 2^L-1 bundles. We prove that all monotonic prices for an agent must be used, hence exponential communication in L is needed. Furthermore, exponential communication is needed just to ensure a higher share of surplus than that realized by auctioning all items as a bundle, or even a higher expected surplus (for some probability distribution over valuations). When the utilities are submodular, efficiency still requires exponential communication (and fully polynomial approximation is impossible). When the items are identical, arbitrarily good approximation is obtained with exponentially less communication than exact efficiency.

                        Book Description

Economists and psychologists have, on the whole, exhibited sharply different perspectives on the elicitation of preferences. Economists, who have made preference the central primitive in their thinking about human behavior, have for the most part rejected elicitation and have instead sought to infer preferences from observations of choice behavior. Psychologists, who have tended to think of preference as a context-determined subjective construct, have embraced elicitation as their dominant approach to measurement.
This volume, based on a symposium organized by Daniel McFadden at the University of California at Berkeley, provides a provocative and constructive engagement between economists and psychologists on the elicitation of preferences.

                          Description:
This paper describes a parametric family of utility functions for decision analysis. The parameterization embeds the HARA class in a four-parameter representation for the risk aversion function. The resulting utility functions can have only four shapes: concave, convex, S-shaped, and reverse S-shaped. This makes the family suited for both expected utility and prospect theory. The paper also describes an alternative technique to estimate the four parameters from elicited utilities, which is simpler than standard fitting by minimization of the mean quadratic error.

                            Description:
Previous research indicates that decision makers are often reluctant to use potentially beneficial multi-criteria decision support systems (MCDSS). Prior research has not examined the specific impact of preference elicitation techniques on user acceptance of MCDSS. The present research begins to fill this gap by examining the effect on users' MCDSS evaluations of two commonly used preference elicitation techniques, absolute measurement and pairwise comparisons, while holding constant all other aspects of the MCDSS and decision making task. Experimental results (N=153) indicate that users consider MCDSS with pairwise comparisons to be higher in decisional conflict, more effortful, less accurate, and overall less desirable to use than MCDSS with absolute measurements. Thus, any potential normative superiority of a preference elicitation technique must be balanced against its potentially adverse effects on user acceptance of the MCDSS within which it is employed. We present a research agenda for exploring the tradeoffs between objective validity and user acceptance in the design of decision analysis tools.

                              Book Description

Using Discrete Choice Experiments to Value Health and Health Care takes a fresh and contemporay look at the growing interest in the development and application of discrete choice experiments (DCEs) within the field of health economics. The authors have written it with the purpose of giving the reader a better understanding of issues raised in the design and application of DCEs in health economics. The use of this relatively new instrument to value health and health care has now evolved to the point where a general text is necessary. The few existing books in this area are either research monographs or focus almost entirely on more advanced topics. By contrast, this book serves as a general reference for those applying the technique to health care for the first time as well as more experienced practitioners. Thus the book is relevant to post-graduate students and applied researchers with an interest in the use of DCEs for valuing health and health care and has international appeal.

The book comprises chapters by highly regarded academics with experience of applying DCEs in the area of health. The first part of the book summarises how DCEs can be implemented, from experimental design to data analysis and the interpretation of results. In many ways this can be regarded as a crash course on the conduct of DCEs. Extensive reference is made throughout to other sources of literature where the interested reader can find further details. The book also includes a series of case studies illustrating the breadth of applications in health economics and some key methodological issues. Finally there is an overview of research issues discussed which the editors believe are at the leading edge of this field.

In March 1987 a radical coalition of queer activists converged on Wall Street—their target, 'Business, Big Business, Business as Usual!!!' It was ACT UP's first demonstration. In November 1999 a radical coalition of environmental, labor, anarchist, queer, and human rights activists converged in Seattle—their target was similar, a system of global capitalism. Between 1987 and 1999 a new project in activism had emerged unshackled from past ghosts. Through innovative use of civil rights' era non-violent disobedience, guerrilla theatre, and sophisticated media work, ACT UP has helped transform the world of activism. This anthology offers a history of ACT UP for a new generation of activists and students. It is divided into five sections which address the new social movements, the use of street theater to reclaim public space, queer and sexual politics, new media/electronic civil disobedience, and race and community building. Contributions range across a diverse spectrum: The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, Jubilee 2000, Students for an Undemocratic Society, Fed Up Queers, Gender Identity Center of Colorado, Triangle Foundation, Jacks of Color, National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, Lower East Side Collective, Community Labor Coalition, Church of Stop-Shopping, Indy Media Collective, Black Radical Congress, The Theater of the Oppressed Laboratory, Adelante Street Theater; HealthGAP, Housing Works, SexPanic! and, of course, ACT UP itself.

5 out of 5 stars Queering the movement for global justice!.......2006-05-05

This is one amazing, fabulous book, rich with people's history and political analysis, thoroughly debunking the myth that the anti-globalization movement is strictly a middle-class white, male, heterosexual phenomenon. As a young radical queer male living with AIDS, I especially enjoyed how the authors interlinked the struggle for economic justice with the fight for sexual freedom. From community gardens to ACT UP to the Battle of Seattle, this book brilliantly documents the social imagination of this movement of movements. Without a doubt, this is one of the best books on the global justice movement around, a definitive activist masterpiece!

                                    1 out of 5 stars is there a link?.......2005-04-20

Some of the essays in this book are excellent, providing real life evidence of efforts to build community power through documenting struggles on a local level. Still on a whole this book represents an assemblage of popular kitch. Shepard and Hayduk don't seem to provide any unifying theme other than the fact that various groups are organizing. Does the ACT-UP struggle resemble community labor coalition organizing? What are the differences between the so called "Urban Protest and Community Building." The derivative nature of the collection is clear to this reader since I found much of the work widely available elsewhere. The editors effort is commendable but a better project would have linked the movements in a coherent fashion. I certainly think that each of the sundry efforts are interesting, but they do not add up to any trend. The authors mix and match organizing that does not help me in understanding the various trajectories presented in the essays that are on the whole fairly interesting but taken together do not show any semblance of coherence.

Yes some of the movements intersect, but none of them seem to connect. Think about it: do ACT-Up, the Seattle protest of 1999, transgender activism, a protest against the murder of Matthew Shepard, pro-choice activists, worker organizing, etc. relate in any way other than tangentially? Another serious omission is the failure to include race as a serious issue in the contemporary era.

                                                Book Description

Jointly hosted by the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA) and the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), this conference was attended by over 300 delegates and represented the largest and most prestigious gathering of eminent international ergonomists in the history of Africa. It also marked the beginning of a revival in concern for the well-being and productivity of people at work in South Africa.

The conference aimed to juxtapose two great ergonomic themes – the under-developed ethos of the affluent societies and the technologically advanced ethos of the most affluent societies. The structure of the proceedings reflects this with the first section addressing the priorities of countries in transition and the last section addressing the priorities of the most industrially-developed countries, who have, by and large, long since solved the sorts of ergonomics problems currently of concern in the under-developed world. In between these, in a roughly hierarchical arrangement from micro- to macro- levels of analysis, are sections which collectively help span the whole field of ergonomics. Section overviews are provided to outline the topics included in each section.
