In 1995 Will Baker traveled to California's Trinity River to write a magazine piece on the annual Earth First! Rendezvous. There he met activists, students, mystics, freaks, witches, troubadours, guerrilla poets, and visionaries—among them a passionate defender of the Southwest desert named Tony Merten, a former officer in the Rio Grande chapter of the Sierra Club. The two struck up a friendship and debated vigorously their views on matters environmental. One issue in particular roused them: the increasingly hot controversy over the century-old practice of allowing ranchers to graze livestock on public lands for a nominal fee.

Seven months later Tony Merten, who made his New Mexico ranch a habitat for wildlife, shot himself to death while under suspicion in the criminal investigation of the wanton shooting of thirty-four cows and calves. The tale of Tony and the cows leads us—inevitably, in Baker's account—to a reassessment of the roots of contemporary eco-philosophy in all its manifestations: the Animal Rights movement, Deep Ecology, technophobia, and the fashionable tributaries of Native American and Eastern thought. Baker's implication is obvious and urgent: we cannot preserve “Nature” until we understand, accept, and deal with human nature.

This book delivers a jolt of that truth, and it invites readers to begin a tough reassessment of our environmental crisis.

This book explores what happens if you take envrionmental zeal to the extreme, while also laying out the reasons why caring for the earth is a critical concern. The author is looking for a middle way between thoughtless corporate resource extraction and armed assaults by protectors of nature. His story is about a local Sierra Club president and loner, who, based on the evidence available, decides to shoot 32 cows grazing on public land in New Mexico in an effort to rid the landscape of exotic species. Mr. Baker explores the literary and societal roots of environmental activism and the development of the view of "nature" prevalent in our society. There are so many actions being taken today that reflect the conflict between our consumer culture and the preservation of the natural world. Deciding how resources are to be used is essential to our survivial and this book looks very closely and very critically at the issue. It is a mind opener, and could certainly offend true believers on both sides. A must read for our times.

Ralph Cutter has spent literally thousands of hours studying trout underwater. His observations are totally unique from other fly fishing writers. Informative and fun read.

A great read. This book is a great resource for fishing certain bugs. You can read a short chapter in a short amount of time. Ralph Cutter writes so one can understand his techniques, yet doesn't compromise the technical aspects. Like the "Go To Fly", this is my new "Go To Book" for learning how to fish certain bugs.

Can't say enough about Cutters new book. I have read a lot of books on fly fishing looking for one that cuts through the mumbo jumbo and this book does just that. It simplifies the whole process of fly selection and whats going on out there on the river. I have since mastered tying the Birds Nest and have eliminated so many other patterns. This book is a must read over and over book for anyone who loves fly fishing.

I'm a neophyte fly fisherman and daunted (albeit fascinated) by aquatic entomology. Cutter's book is fantastic. He covers the bases in a humorous fashion, with a perspective not present in other books I've read. He challanges alot of orthodox ideas and puts you in a trouts-eye-view that leaves you looking at a familiar stream a bit differently. A really enjoyable read. In fact, I was officially deemed a 'dork' when my wife caught me laughing out-loud while reading a book about bugs...

Flyfishing pearls.......2005-10-09

Ralph Cutter has written a book useful for the beginning to expert flyfisherman. His credentials as a former flyfishing guide, flytier and snorkeling observer of trout behavior add to the utility of what he has to say about what trout like. While I haven't had the resounding success with the Birdnest fly, I'll keep trying. This book is a necessary addition to the flyfishing library for anyone interested in understanding more about this advocation.

Great for samples.......2007-10-18

I used this book along with Michael Larson's How to Write a Book Proposal and Elizabeth Lyon's book on Non-Fiction Book Proposals. Larson's and Lyon's books were better at explaining each section and how to create interest, but I liked this book for the actual examples. When I was ready to write a section, I'd read about it in the other books, and then read the samples in this book.

I was successful in getting an agent who asked what books I used in creating my proposal as she said it was very good. I have since sold the book to a publisher as well.

Good but Author Screenwriter is Far Better.......2007-10-18

Author! Screenwriter!: How to Succeed as a Writer in New York and Hollywood is a much better book than Jeff Hermans Write a Perfect Book Proposal. Looks can be deceiving. Peter Miller's book is actually much more informative and gives greater depth into how to write a book proposal. If I had to choose, I would pick Author Screenwriter over Write the Perfect Book Proposal.

I Was Very Disappointed.......2007-04-12

Unless you are writing a book along the lines of "How To Succeed In The Business World," or a book on genealogy, or self help, I recommend that you do not buy this book. The agents who wrote the book appear to be mainly focused on books for the business world. The book that I've written is an explosive exposé on the CIA and bipartisan corruption in the government, but absolutely none of the ten "sample book proposals" in "Write the Perfect Book Proposal" were of any use. But to be fair, this book might be for you if you are writing about business, or self help, or genealogy. (One of the sample proposals deals with genealogy.)

outdated, pick something on the same subject by someone else that was published this year; this one has extremely stale info. The world of publishing has changed dramatically since it was written 8 years ago or more, with much new info about cybermarketing and other strong ways of reaching audiences and potential publishers. Also, make sure the book you read is about the kind of book you have written /are writing. There are different approaches needed to reach publishers, depending.

Writing a book proposal.......2007-01-15

This is a very good primer on writing a book proposal. It addresses all the key areas that need be included. It's point of differentiation is that it provides 10 examples of proposals that worked. Hence, you really get some good directly usable ideas for headlines and for content within. I was a bit surprised to find as much as 75% devoted to examples...but that ultimately is good. Too often the frontend text is vague, as it must be, but the proposal examples give you much more meat.
