General relativity is the modern theory of gravity, due originally to Einstein. The study of gravitational systems under extreme conditions of density and energy is presently extremely active, for two very different reasons: First, the modern generation of astrophysical measurements are dramatically expanding the information we have of these systems in real astrophysical environments, such as in neutron stars, black holes, or the very early universe. Fabulous dialogue.......2005-02-01

There's a lot of hilarity in this book ("Mommy,why is she wearing that eye-dropper in her ear?"). The grief for the loss of the four trees sneaks up on you between the lines.

I agree with a reviewer in Earth First! Journal who found Losure's attitude toward the protesters somewhat dismissive: she seems surprised to discover (near the end of the narrative) that, after all, they might have important point to make. However, I think that this rhetorical structure works in this case in the favor of the trees, if not the protesters themselves: Losure brings the skeptical reader along with her.

Like Eliot's Middlemarch, this book is both social satire and ethical touchstone. Ultimately, it has a Dickensian, panoramic quality that really transcends the genre of eco-journalism: while no one social group in the narrative has a monopoly on truth, Losure finds a real beauty in the sometimes clumsy, sometimes ugly Highway 55 conflict.

Inspiring Letdown.......2007-03-22

I bough this book with the assumption that when it said it contained maps, that it meant topographical maps. I wanted something I could use rather than what look like hand-drawn sketches. I am planning a hike of the Kungsleden, and turned to this book because there is such a paucity of information in English regarding this hike. As it stands, there is still not a lot of information. One positive thing about the book I found was it is great inspiration for other hikes that I have not heard of. Perhaps I will try them after the Kungsleden, just not with this book's "Maps" as a guide.

Classic Hikes of the World: 23 Breathtaking Treks.......2006-11-04

This book is one of the best books I have read that deal with different treks around the world. I appreciate the author's suggestions for preparation for the hikes and his detail about how to arrive at the trailhead. I recommend this book for its detailed information on some of the world's best treks.

A great book to get you really motivated to go off and adventure. I gave it to my neighbor and have not seen it for a month. That says it all because they have been to lots of great places and they were mildly interested in it when I offered it to them. Worth every penny.

After seeing the movie I was very anxious to read the book. It was so good! The plot basically the same but with some new and different things. It also gives you a lot to really think about, which I found to be good in a teen book. Also, the WAY it was written was fun and something I haven't ever seen done before. If you liked the movie, you will most likely enjoy the book too!

How does risk labeling information on hazardous household chemicals and pesticides influence consumer behavior? While many studies speculate on the effects of risk information, Magat and Viscusi draw on a series of extensive surveys to assess the likely response. Their set of original studies of household chemicals, energy audits, and food risk labeling establishes guidelines for the design and evaluation of these informational regulations. Their findings also include new estimates of the valuation of nonfatal health risks, the first estimates in the literature of the role of altruism, and an assessment of the influence of irrational responses to risk.

Although economists suggest that giving consumers information about potentially hazardous goods is preferable to direct regulation of product content, implementation of information regulation raises a host of issues that need to be addressed. Magat and Viscusi document the cognitive limitations that consumers have in processing information and break new ground by showing how, given this behavior, the informational regulations should be designed.

Case studies assess the degree to which different kinds of consumers notice, remember, and heed printed warnings in a range of wordings and formats. They then examine risk valuation, showing how much consumers are willing to pay for increased product safety under various conditions. A concluding chapter synthesizes the results and discusses their implications for regulatory policy.
