General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics: Eighth Canadian Conference Montreal, Quebec June 1999 (AIP Conference Proceedings / Astronomy and Astrophysics)
Manufacturer: American Institute of Physics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 156396905X |
Book Description
General relativity is the modern theory of gravity, due originally to Einstein. The study of gravitational systems under extreme conditions of density and energy is presently extremely active, for two very different reasons: First, the modern generation of astrophysical measurements are dramatically expanding the information we have of these systems in real astrophysical environments, such as in neutron stars, black holes, or the very early universe. Second, these same systems are proving to be very instructive theoretical probes of cutting-edge theories of elementary particles, such as string theory and its close cousin, M-theory. The confluence of these two trends makes it very fruitful to bring together astrophysicists, geometers, and string theorists, as was done at the 8th CCGRAA.

Our Way or the Highway: Inside the Minnehaha Free State (Ecology)
Mary Losure Manufacturer: University of Minnesota Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0816639051 |
Book Description
Construction plans for the reroute of Highway 55 through south Minneapolis sparked an environmental movement that pitted activists against public authorities in one of the most dramatic episodes in the city's history. Mary Losure was there; as a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio she witnessed the neighborhood's transformation from a quiet street to the center of an emotionally charged standoff. Fueled by idealism and anger, a diverse coalition banded together to try to stop the highway expansion. Beginning in 1998, this group sustained protests for more than one year and eventually faced an unprecedented show of force by law enforcement. In Our Way or the Highway Losure offers an inside view of the activist subculture that converged into a makeshift encampment dubbed the "Minnehaha Free State." Here, a retired stenographer befriended EarthFirst! members and appeared in the organization's national journal, fist raised in protest of the destruction of her home. A pipe fitter abandoned his old life to defend what he believed to be the sacred sites of his Dakota ancestors. A dreamy, dreadlocked seeker hitchhiked to Minneapolis and spent days perched in a doomed cottonwood tree. A police lieutenant watched the trees fall and felt surprising sympathy for the activists' beliefs. Engagingly written, Our Way or the Highway reveals the motivations, perceptions, and dynamics of those involved in this conflict of wills and ideals.
Among the issues Losure explores are the roles of ecoanarchism and grassroots activism in the age of globalization. This fascinating subculture, brought to the spotlight during protests over the World Trade Organization in Seattle and Genoa, has been largely undocumented in the mainstream press. With a practiced reporter's eye, Mary Losure shows the activists' world and the way the establishment views them, and ultimately she lays bare the power of the existing order and the fragility and absolute necessity of dissent.
Mary Losure is an award-winning reporter who covers the environment for Minnesota Public Radio. She is a longtime contributor to National Public Radio, where her work has aired on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

The Regulation of Unfair Commercial Practices Under Ec Directive 2005/29: New Rules and New Techniques (Studies of the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative)
Manufacturer: Hart Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1841136999 |
Book Description
This book represents the fruit of a conference held in Oxford on March 3, 2006 under the auspices of the Institute of European and Comparative Law in the Oxford University Law Faculty. Directive 2005/29 is an important new measure in the construction of a legal framework apt to promote an integrated economic space in the European Union. It establishes a harmonised regime governing the control of unfair commercial practices. As such it represents an important exercise in the use of new rules and new techniques, and therefore poses new challenges to EU lawyers. The purpose of this book is to inform and to explore the issues raised by the Directive, issues which are of academic and practical interest, in helping to understand the evolution of European consumer law within the broader programme of European market regulation. The intense practical significance of this Directive, which heralds a new regime, is likely to provoke commercial operators to seek to exploit opportunities to pursue practices previously suppressed.

Informational Approaches to Regulation (Regulation of Economic Activity)
Wesley A. Magat , and W. Kip Viscusi Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 026213277X |
Book Description
How does risk labeling information on hazardous household chemicals and pesticides influence consumer behavior? While many studies speculate on the effects of risk information, Magat and Viscusi draw on a series of extensive surveys to assess the likely response. Their set of original studies of household chemicals, energy audits, and food risk labeling establishes guidelines for the design and evaluation of these informational regulations. Their findings also include new estimates of the valuation of nonfatal health risks, the first estimates in the literature of the role of altruism, and an assessment of the influence of irrational responses to risk.

Consumer Participation in Infrastructure Regulation: Evidence from the East Asia And Pacific Region (World Bank Working Papers) (World Bank Working Papers)
Elisa Muzzini Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821363808 |
Product Description
Consumer Participation in Infrastructure Regulation draws on results of a survey questionnaire conducted among 45 infrastructure regulators in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region. It finds that EAP regulators have successfully begun to involve consumers in the regulatory process: consumer representation is a well-established practice in the region; and regulators draw on standard mechanisms to inform consumers, resolve consumer complaints, and solicit consumer input. However, regulators must take further actions to firmly move up the ladder of consumer engagement, from merely providing information to actively consulting with consumers. In particular, consumer participation would benefit from more open disclosure policies, more effective strategies to reach out to the poor, and tighter regulatory intervention to hold service providers accountable for resolving consumer complaints.Download Description

Trading Up: Consumer and Environmental Regulation in a Global Economy
David Vogel Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674900839 |
Book Description
Health, safety, and environmental regulations have been traditionally perceived as distinct entities from trade policy, yet today they have become intertwined on a global scale. In this pioneering work, David Vogel integrates environmental, consumer, and trade policy, and explicitly challenges the conventional wisdom that trade liberalization and agreements to promote free trade invariably undermine national health, safety, and environmental standards. Vogel demonstrates that liberal trade policies often produce precisely the opposite effect: that of strengthening regulatory standards.
The most comprehensive account of trade and regulation on a global scale, this book analyzes the regulatory dimensions of all major international and regional trade agreements and treaties, including GATT, NAFTA, the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the United States, and the treaties that created the European Community and Union. He explores in depth some of the most important trade and regulatory conflicts, including the GATT tuna-dolphin dispute, the EC's beef hormone ban, the Danish bottle case, and the debate in the United States over the regulatory implications of both NAFTA and GATT.
This timely book unravels the increasingly important and contentious relationship between trade and environmental, health, and safety standards, paying particular attention to the politics that underlie trade and regulatory linkages. Trading Up is essential reading for the business community, policymakers, environmentalists, consumer interest groups, political scientists, lawyers, and economists.
