This vivid ethnohistory explores the complex transformation of northwestern Amazonia by the rubber boom from 1850 to 1933. During this period, the region underwent rapid and violent incorporation into the political and economic systems of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Western Europe, and the United States. The author examines the historical myths and realities of northwest Amazonia before its incorpo-ration and then shows how the Indians and environment were radically altered by the rubber boom and international trade. Not merely victims, the Indians both aided and resisted economic and environmental change in subtle and contradictory ways. In 1907 allegations of the systematic enslavement, torture, and murder of Indians by the rubber industry ignited an international scandal linking antislavery power Great Britain to human bondage and focused world attention on Amazonia until the outbreak of World War I.

The Ulysses observations have charted the heliosphere around the minimum in the 11 year cycle of solar activity, revealing the large scale properties of the heliospheric medium and its micro-scale characteristics. This book presents for the first time, a comprehensive review of the results of the Ulysses mission.
The first chapter provides an overview of the region, introducing the heliosphere prior to the Ulysses mission, and the objectives and characteristics of the mission itself. Subsequent chapters discuss in detail specific areas of the heliosphere, including the solar wind, large and small scale features, cosmic rays and energetic particles, and the observations of interstellar gas and cosmic dust. Each of these chapters is written by members of the Ulysses science team, concentrating on their own areas of expertise, and is written in a clear and accessible way.
In this book, the authors aim to summarise our understanding of the heliosphere near solar minimum and to provide the basis for understanding the more complex state of the heliosphere around solar maximum, which will be observed during the next phase of the Ulysses mission.

I can't say anymore this book is exclent. it has diagrams and is verry informative. just be sure to buy th required equitment.

A Reference Worth Having on Hand.......2007-02-10

While it should go without saying that no martial art can be learned solely from a book and that the intricacies need to be experienced with a real live teacher in real time, I think that this book can definitely benefit students of Eishin Ryu Iaido. Whether you are a beginner, trying to remember the waza (techniques), or an old hand, looking to brush up on the basics that can get lost over time, Suino's book is a good reference text.

I have to say that I was surprised. So many martial arts texts either have amateurish pictures (such as Yang Jwing-Ming's texts, which are otherwise so useful) or pictures that simply don't include enough details. This book has basic but clear graphics that, along with real-life/real-time instruction, make a lot of sense. Even Suino's description of how to put on the gi and hakama are better than most I've seen. (If he included how to fold the hakama, it would be even better! Luckily, you can get that online ([...]).)

Compared to a book like Flashing Steel, Suino helps the beginner in particular by focusing on the pragmatic topics: he lists and explains the introductory Batto Ho no Bu (Drawing Methods Set) techniques, the intermediatesd Tatehiza no Bu (Half-Seated Set), and the advanced Tachiwaza no Bu (Secret Forms, Standing Set). While the glossary could be longer, you can filter through the text to find other words/phrases that he uses and explains and pencil them into the glossary on your own.

The other thing that really excites me about this book is that he always includes the kanji (Japanese characters) for the names of the techniques. As an intermediate speaker of Japanese, that helped me a lot when I was trying to figure out what the names really meant.

A clear book with all drills and other complementary stuff of Eishin-Ryu Iaido.
I am not an expert in Iaido but this book seems to be very clear and complete, even
when the numbers of the descriptions for some pictures have some minor mistakes respect to the numbers of the picures themselves (you can correct them by hand)
Mr Suino seems to be an excellent martial artist wit a very serious approach to the discipline

A must own for iaido practitioners.......2006-03-22

I normally never refer to books when it comes to the art of eishin-ryu, but this book did help correct my somewhat correct stances. Some of the moves, at first, are hard to follow. The thing is though that the book has a chapter specifically on how to use this book, so you shouldn't be too confused for very long. At first, i was sceptic, but since my girlfriend bought it for me, i gave it a try, and i can honestly that's it done nothing but make me want to train even more. It even teaches you hoe to wipe blood off the blood the proper way. It was like Suino wrote this manual as if you were really engaged in brutal, bloody sword combat. For any of those who would like to learn eishin-ryu, definitely check out this manual, it'll do you some good.

Nadia Of The Night Witches is an action-packed story of courage, determination and romance, it is the story of young women at war in unprecedented aerial combat during World War II. There is dramatic fighting action, superb story line and character development. Although the book is a work of historical fiction, the Night Witches were very real. Following the German invasion of Russia in the summer of 1941, the Soviet Government authorized the formation of three squadrons of female pilots. One of these, the 588th Night Bomber Squadron, became known as the Night Witches. Equipped with obsolete, open-cockpit biplanes built in the 1920's, they flew some of the most daring combat missions of World War Two. During the past half-century of Cold War, their story has, for the most part, remained untold outside of the Soviet Union. 17-year-old Nadia Tarachinko has just graduated from flight school and for whatever short time she believes she has left to her life before being killed by the advancing Germans, she would kill Germans-nothing else mattered. The action begins immediately. In a flashback we see Nadia's family farm being bombed, her family being killed and a near crazed and bloodied Nadia being rescued from two German soldiers by Lilly, who swoops out of the air in a PO-2 and flies the girl, sitting on the body of her bloodied and dead back-cockpit navigator, to the safety of the Night Witches base. Missions, battles and innermost thoughts of the fighting young women play from the pages. Although this is Nadia's story, it is also a riviting look at patriotism and love and war through the eyes of young women at war. Wartime, a time when those in battle are afraid to care for anyone because death is so emminent. Yet, Townsend shows us love in various combinations: Lilly and Nadia (both Night Witches pilots); Shenya (Nadia's navigator) and Nicholai (a Russian flight captain); Nadia and Misha ( a tank command sargeant), and the Night Witches barracks (all ranks) compassion for a surviving young German boy who they are determined to keep incognito and hand off to the safety of the Allied forces as soon as they can at war's end. This is the time of Stalin and Mother Russia and The Young Communists League. All Russians fought. The open-cockpit PO-2 biplane was simple enough for peasant girls to fly, and cheap to build and repair. And, training women for air battle freed up the men to fly the more important missions of the Great Patriotic War. Nadia Of The Night Wicthes is dedicated to the memory of all those pioneer women, both Allied and Axis, who flew military aircraft in World War II.

Of historical interest for young readers.......2000-05-13

"Nadia of the Night Witches" deserves recognition for bringing the wartime deeds of Soviet teenagers to Western children. The book is simply written, but does not sanitize the horror of war. Based very loosely on the factual 588th Women's Regiment of Light Night-Bombers (46th Taman' Guards), it tells the story of an orphaned girl driven by hatred and revenge, who ultimately, under the most trying circumstances, comes to know love and compassion. Although there are some glaring discrepancies-- particularly regarding the combat capabilities of the Po-2 biplane --the author has done some admirable research for the story. The existence of the "night witches", so-named by the Nazi troops they terrorized, is little-known in the West. The tragedy and courage of ordinary Russian citizens during the Great Patriotic War (World War ll) deserves to be remembered. For further reading, young people will also surely enjoy "Night Witches" by Bruce Myles (which is based on actual interviews with surviving veterans of the women's aviation regiments of night-bombers, dive-bombers, and fighters). Teenagers will also find inspiring the memoirs of the Russian girl-partisan Ina Konstantinova, translated by Kazimiera J. Cottam in her book "Defending Leningrad". For readers of all ages, fascinating translated memoirs of the real "night witches" and other Soviet combat pilots can be found in Cottam's book "Women in Air War -- The Eastern Front of World War ll".

Emphasis is upon segmentation: on the demand side, within the educational system and, on supply side, monitoring costs which underlie labour contracts. Using long run official government statistical evidence, it is argued that what is peculiar to Japan is the integration of segmented labour markets. By virtue of segmentation the Japanese labour market is deeply competitive. By virtue of integration it is highly cooperative.

Low-skilled workers face a future of joblessness or low-wage, insecure employment as technological change and globalization impact on the advanced economies. 'The European social model' of collective bargaining, minimum wages, employment rights, and social welfare support is alternately cited as both cause and cure. The contributions to this book review the evidence and find that, while the European model cannot remedy adverse global trends affecting low-skilled workers, it does achieve significant success in moderating them. Collective bargaining and wage regulation reduce the incidence of low pay. Minimum wages at prevailing levels provide significant wage protection for more vulnerable workers, without substantial job losses. The significant 'jobs deficit' of Germany relative to the USA in low-wage services is not the outcome of excessively high German wages. Conversely, reliance on wage flexibility to create jobs for the low-skilled does not emerge as economically effective, and can no longer be regarded as the simple panacea.

Do low wages help to reduce unemployment and increase competitiveness in world markets? Is minimum wage legislation and collective bargaining harmful to the efficient working of any economy? In answer to these questions, this book examines the impact of low-wage employment on different countries in Europe.

The book traces the development of low-wage employment in Europe, paying special attention to the role of minimum wages, social exclusion, the youth labor market and the emergence of new forms of employment relationship. The authors find that the evolution of low-wage employment has not always occurred at the same pace among European countries, and in certain countries it is not dissimilar to the United States. They also argue that minimum wage legislation does provide protection for the lowest paid but that it alone will not prevent the emergence of low-wage employment. Lastly, countries with highly regulated labor markets such as France and Germany have seen the development of new forms of low wage employment which exist outside the conventional labor market.

This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of labor economics, industrial relations and European studies as well as policy makers in the public sector and international organizations.
