No more wasting time at meetings.......2006-06-28
All too often, meetings are dominated by two or three people who are more interested in hearing themselves talk than in maximizing the productivity of the group. Furthermore, how often have you left a meeting feeling frustrated that nothing got accomplished?
This book contains a number of systematic recommendations on how to handle these and many other pitfalls. The authors offer dozens of insights, some of which are common sense (for example, no personal attacks) while others are very creative methods to keep meeting attendees involved and accountable. One such idea is to recognize how the group makes decisions - consensus, chair's discretion, voice vote, or secret ballot - and rotate these techniques so that no single personality type is always in control.
Be warned that there are no eye-catching graphics or hip cultural references here. But if you want a no-nonsense, no-frills, textbook-like primer on how to get the most out of your meetings, check out this material.
A great resource!.......2006-01-20
My team and I at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society are proud to be highlighted as a case study in the book. Pat Sanaghan's direct work with us, which started with the effective meeting profile survey, established a clear base line for us to better utilize our strengths and understand our challenges regarding meeting management. We are putting our learnings into practice and have become a model team in the organization as a result. The book is an valuable tool for any business or organization that is "meeting driven". Thanks Pat!
Identifying Opportunities for Improvement in Groups.......2004-05-08
I highly recommend this book to any group who wants to uncover opportunities! It helps break down group interactions into manageable parts that are not too overwhelming to understand. Once the opportunities for improvement are identified, the book helps to guide a group through next steps. It doesn't just identify the problem areas, but provides solutions as well. This book is very valuable.
Our meetings are 100% better..........2004-04-23
This meeting inventory has taken our meetings to a new level of productivity. It was so easy to administer and score, plus it gives ideas for how to improve the areas that we needed to work on. I recommend this meeting survey to any leader who is serious about having meetings that are both enjoyable and productive. A great find for our organization.

Book Description
This book explores how astronomy and power were linked in the early Roman Empire. This is achieved by careful study of the Fasti by the Roman poet Ovid--a poem about the Roman calendar that contains many references to and stories about the stars. The author does not study Ovid's stars by using the techniques of mathematical astronomy but aims to combine the methodology of recent genre-based readings with a broad cultural perspective.

Book Description
Lowe takes us along the rugged eastern coast, from St. Andrews up to Montrose and Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen, "from heather, whin and sand, to points north," to Nairn and Dornoch. Then to the west coast, to Prestwick and Troon. It's not only the courses themselves that Lowe illuminates along the way, but the winding roads, the ancient villages, the farms and whiskey distilleries, and the people who call this land their home as well. Each step of his pilgrimage is given its due.

Scottish Golf Links.......2007-07-23
A wonderful collection of photographs of golf courses. If you have been there to play them, this is a terrific way to reminisce
5 Stars from someone who's been there!.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my father who visits Scotland to golf each year. He LOVED the book. He said, "it really captures the feel of walking the courses". He is excited to go back this Spring and look at them in a new light since noticing things in the book. A great gift for the golfer in your life!
Visual Feast of Scottish Links Golf.......2006-08-28
Great volume on the essential key links courses in Scotland. The text is fine and to the point. There's some interesting insight especially into the history of golf (St.Andrews and Dornoch in particular), but nothing overboard.
I also think it was a good idea to divide the golf into regions. It makes the courses more approachable plus you get to appreciate the slight nuances from one region to another.
The bottom line is this book is about the photography with the avid golfer in mind. Simply fantastic pictures. I'm an amateur photographer and I can tell you Ian spent an enormous amount of time putting these photos together. On almost every shot, it's clear he had to wait for the right time of day and the right moment to capture the dramatic setting with clouds/sun/wind/shadows in the foreground/background. In addition, he more often than not is using a vantage point to the direct benefit of the golfer. By this I mean you will appreciate the difficulty, challenge, and strategy of a given hole or set of holes from Ian's chosen vantage point and framing. Tremendous aerial shots as well. What I really thought was done well was the combination of key hole reviews (from Kyle Philipps of Kingsbarns fame) and multiple vantage point pictures. Together they really worked well to paint a picture for the golfer planning to play any one of these courses.
When all is said and done, you owe it to yourself to pick up this volume before heading across the pond. In fact, bring it with you, so you can compare your experience to the book itself. You won't regret it.
The only slight negative I would give to the book is the sometimes poor print reproduction of some of the quality photographs. Not the photographer's fault, but the publisher's.
Must Read.......2005-12-10
If you have, or have dreamed of traveling to Scotland, you must read this book. The photos are magnificent. I have played many and the book brings back such fond memories. Will play more next year as we return.
Stan
Fantastic Photos.......2005-10-19
This book is simply wonderful. Why it took three months to get to me I will never know, but the wait was worth it. The photos are first rate and give the reader the true feeling that he is walking these legendary fairways. For anyone who has ever played in Scotland or who dreams of doing so, this book is for you. You will not be dissappointed!

back in the old country, the deaf community is a highlight. Though they are not treated to the BEST lentil perogies, they are treated to the 2nd best borscht. Lucky them...I love perogies... i need this book to give to my deaf granddaughter Oibaf. She is very young and very scared becasue she lost her hearing in a cooking accident. She was listening to music and the radiation in our gas stove reacrted with the sound waves, destrying her anvil bone. Poor little meshugina. She's still my little dear though. She needs to be joyous and sign, so pease rank this book well...take care and god be with you..Helga

Customer Reviews:
"Do or do not...there is no try." (Yoda).......2005-04-17
Schell and his associates have completed extensive research among decision-makers who buy products or hire talent. The books he has authored are based on that research and share a few core concepts:
1. Determine HOW you can help a given organization to prosper.
2. Learn everything you need to know inorder to propose an appropriate course of action.
3. Collaborate with the decision-maker(s) on finalizing the details of that course of action.
4. Then implement it with meticulous care as well as with energy and enthusiasm, making whatever revisions may become necessary.
In this volume, Schell offers a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system by which to apply these core concepts for opportunities which small businesses have. (By the way, the same core concepts are also appropriate to larger organizations, but let's limit our attention to those which have limited resources, those for whom Schell primarily wrote this book.) It may be of interest to take a moment and consider a few statistics: Of the 1 million U.S. small businesses started this year [2005], more than 80% of them will be out of business within 5 years and 96% will have closed their doors before their 10th birthday. These are indeed chilling statistics. That's the bad news.
Now some good news which is indicated as Jack Welch explains why he admires small companies: "For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy."
In this volume, Schell offers 53 "Secrets" and organizes his explication of them as follows:
Part I: Foundation (Secrets 1-7)
Part II: Developing New Business (Secrets 8-32)
Part III: Tying It All Together (Secrets 33-53)
In fact, few of these so-called "secrets" will be a revelation to anyone with even limited business experience. Each makes compelling sense and most seem to me to be obvious. For example, "Keep only the right people on your team" (#4), "Get Your prospect database in order" (#8), "Be ready for tough questions from your prospects" (#21), "Keep your employees informed" (#46), and "Negotiate effectively" (#49). Well, duh.
The substantial value of this book is derived, rather, from carefully reading and then re-reading the material first; then completing what I would call a "gut check" to determine (a) the extent to which your organization is already doing what Schell recommends, (b) how effectively that is being done, (c) what else needs to be done, when, how, and by whom, and finally (d) how progress will be accurately measured per tasks, division of labor, and deadlines.
Everyone within your organization who will be involved in these initiatives should have read and (preferably) re-read this book before meeting together to conduct the "gut check" and then collaborate on an appropriate course of action. It is also imperative that they see customers as partners in the enterprise, and, see themselves as partners with each prospective customer. At every stage of the collaborate process, think in terms of both cultivation and solicitation. Trust and respect must first be earned before permission is requested. That is as true of and as important as relationships with associates as it is of relationships with customers. And don't forget about those who comprise your list of payables recipients. All third-party centers of influence can -- and should -- should be viewed and engaged (once they agree to be) as an extended sales force.
Schell shares within his Final Thoughts the following:
There are three kinds of people in the world:
Those who make it happen,
Those who watch it happen,
And those who ask, "Hey, what happened?"
Recall the aforementioned "chilling statistics: Of the 1 million U.S. small businesses started this year [2005], more than 80% of them will be out of business within 5 years and 96% will have closed their doors before their 10th birthday. I wholly agree with Jeff Pfeffer and Bob Sutton that there is a Knowing-Doing Gap. Those who compete with you may also read and then re-read Schell's book. Chances are, they will not follow-through. That is, they will fail to convert valuable information and counsel into appropriate action.
Will you? The choice is yours.

The Choice for Europe: Social Purpose and State Power from Messina to Maastricht (Cornell Studies in Political Economy)
ASIN: 0801472962 |
Book Description
The quasi-federal European Union stands out as the major exception in the thinly institutionalized world of international politics. Something has led Europeansand only Europeansbeyond the nation-state to a fundamentally new political architecture. Craig Parsons argues in A Certain Idea of Europe that this "something" was a particular set of ideas generated in Western Europe after the Second World War.
In Parsons's view, today's European Union reflects the ideological (and perhaps visionary) project of an elite minority. His book traces the progressive victory of this project in France, where the battle over European institutions erupted most divisively. Drawing on archival research and extensive interviews with French policymakers, the author carefully traces a fifty-year conflict between radically different European plans. Only through aggressive leadership did the advocates of a supranational "community" Europe succeed at building the EU and binding their opponents within it.
Parsons puts the causal impact of ideas, and their binding effects through institutions, at the center of his book. In so doing he presents a strong logic of "social construction"a sharp departure from other accounts of EU history that downplay the role of ideas and ideology.

Book Description
As France begins to confront the new challenges of the post-Cold War era, the time has come to examine how French security policy has evolved since Charles de Gaulle set it on an independent course in the 1960s. Philip Gordon shows that the Gaullist model, contrary to widely held beliefs, has lived on--but that its inherent inconsistencies have grown more acute with increasing European unification, the diminishing American military role in Europe, and related strains on French military budgets. The question today is whether the Gaullist legacy will enable a strong and confident France to play a full role in Europe's new security arrangements or whether France, because of its will to independence, is destined to play an isolated, national role. Gordon analyzes military doctrines, strategies, and budgets from the 1960s to the 1990s, and also the evolution of French policy from the early debates about NATO and the European Community to the Persian Gulf War. He reveals how and why Gaullist ideas have for so long influenced French security policy and examines possible new directions for France in an increasingly united but potentially unstable Europe.

Book Description
The title of this book is, of course, inspired by the famous opening words of General de Gaulle's Memoirs of the Second World War: "All my life I have thought of France in a certain way." Wesseling brings together his essays dealing with a great variety of subjects such as culture, society, politics, and diplomacy, with one section devoted entirely to French historians. The first section contains an chapter on the famous painter Ary Scheffer and the France of his time, that is to say the first half of the 19th century. The second chapter continues this theme and deals with Emile Zola and the Paris of the Second Empire. Two other chapters discuss aspects of the Third Republic, sports and students, respectively. The second section is devoted to French intellectuals. It offers the first in-depth analysis of the group of intellectuals that supported Zola and Dreyfus. Chapter six deals with one of the great literary figures of the interwar period--and later a notorious collaborator--Robert Brasillach. Chapter seven contains a vivid sketch of the life and work of the famous French intellectual Raymond Aron. The third section is devoted to politics and diplomacy. French foreign policy is discussed both in its long-term perspective as well as more specifically in the period of Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle's "idea of France" is compared with that of an author by whom he was greatly influenced, Charles Peguy. Finally, there is a section on French history writing, including two biographical essays, one about Gabriel Hanotaux, the once famous but now nearly forgotten historian who became Minister of Foreign Affairs, and another on Fernand Braudel, the great contemporary French historian and close friend of Wesseling. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with French history, the history of ideas, and European historiography.

Book Description
What is the je-ne-sais-quoi? How-if at all-can it be put into words? In addressing these questions, Richard Scholar offers the first full-length study of the je-ne-sais-quoi and its fortunes in early modern Europe. He describes the rise and fall of the expression as a noun and as a topic of debate, examines its cluster of meanings, and uncovers the scattered traces of its 'pre-history'. The je-ne-sais-quoi is often assumed to belong purely to the realm of the literary, but in the early modern period it serves to articulate problems of knowledge in natural philosophy, the passions, and culture, and for that reason it is approached here from an interdisciplinary perspective. Placing major figures of the period such as Montaigne, Shakespeare, Descartes, Corneille, and Pascal alongside some of their lesser-known contemporaries, Scholar argues that the je-ne-sais-quoi serves above all to capture first-person encounters with a 'certain something' that is as difficult to explain as its effects are intense. When early modern writers use the expression in this way, he suggests, they give literary form to an experience that twenty-first-century readers may recognize as something like their own.

Book Description
While the global trade regime has made significant strides in eliminating tariffs and other barriers to free trade, it has yet to develop a consistent and enforceable antitrust and competition policy that combats monopolies, cartels, and other private arrangements that continue to hamper equitable access to the world's goods and services. This book takes a giant step toward achieving this goal. Based on a conference of national authorities and leading scholars in antitrust and competition law and policy, Competition Policy in the Global Trading System: Perspectives from the EU, Japan and the USA presents twenty insightful essays which together provide an in-depth assessment of current achievements and impasses, as well as a variety of possible ways forward. Among the relevant factors in this progression, the authors discuss such approaches as: + bilateral and regional international cooperation agreements; + WTO competition rules, enforceable through the dispute resolution procedure; and + international development of US, EU, and Japanese antitrust laws. Each of these approaches is examined through the all-important lens of enforcement - a spectrum that extends from deterrence to private actions imposing such penalties as prejudgment interest or treble damages. The crucial issue of how international antitrust rules should be incorporated into the global trading system is explored from many angles. Significantly, the book comes at a time when the report of the U.S. International Competition Policy Advisory Committee (ICPAC) is under close scrutiny in all major trading countries. The conference on which this book is based was in fact the first occasion at which top-level antitrust enforcers discussed this report. Including as it does the opinions of several former and present government and WTO leaders in antitrust and competition policy, Competition Policy in the Global Trading System: Perspectives from the EU, Japan and the USA sets the stage for the integration of trade and competition rules that is now gathering momentum. It is a book no official or academic in the field can do without.
