Cheryl Tardif captured what it feels like to lose someone you love and so many of the different emotions you go through. She also captured an accurate portrayal of a girls adolescence--like the first kiss of an 11-year-old; that was very cute. It was very easy for me to relate to the spiritual faith after a loved one dies. This was a short, quick read that kept me entertained throughout.

Simply sublime. I agree with other reviewers that Whale Song is a touching and heartfelt story. The best possible kudos I can give this book are these: I will share this story with my own daughters when they come of age and will enjoy revisiting the story in years to come.

The Whale Song was the first in many I hope to read by the author Cheryl Kaye Tardif. The book pulled me in and kept me there until the end. I am still thinking about it. Beyond Enjoyable!

"Whale Song" is a fabulous book! I could not put it down. The descriptions of the characters and the setting are so well written you feel like you are in the book too. Have a tissue ready.... this book is a real tear jerker.

Extremely interesting book!.......2007-08-29

Ok... I am generally not one to read this type of novel, but once in awhile, I like to pick this type of novel up. So I picked up Whale Song by Cheryl Tardif. It was a VERRRRY late night, because I could NOT put the book down! Fantastic book! I would defenitely recommend this book!

This is a big, beautiful, lavishly illustrated love tribute to the whale species. About half the pages are for Williams' grand, celebratory poem--a poem of beauty and stark fact-- about whales, that includes history, biology, all the ways whales have enriched our society, both living and as a product, the tragic aspects regarding the thoughtless, non-sacred killing of the great beasts and details of hunting and processing, etc. Indeed, Williams' epic seems to include all aspects of the culture of the whale. The second half of the book contains hundreds of fascinating quotes about whales, culled from nearly every epoch of written human history, and serves the reader as a virtual encyclopedia about whales. The book is illustrated throughout with fine photographs, including beautiful full color photos of whales alive and well in their natural habitat, to photos depicting the myriad ways humans have exploited and profited from the whale. This is a good book, a song celebrating the sacredness of whales and lamenting our human society that has for the most part taken them for granted. This book is both a prayer and a textbook, celebrating whales with compassion and passion, and educating about whales with fascinating facts, history and photos. It is a work of art, both simple and grand.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Prior Demonstration (Demo) I and Engineering Design Study (EDS) I testing conducted by the PM, Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment, validated biological treatment of a mixture of HD and tetrytol hydrolysates using Honeywell Immobilized Cell Bioreactor (ICB). The HD hydrolysate used in the previous tests was made from neat agent obtained from ton containers. Because the Pueblo Chemical Depot (PCD), Pueblo, CO, stockpile consists of assembled munitions that contain liquid agent and solid material (heel), the hydrolysate used in prior ICB testing was not fully representative of the hydrolysate that will be produced at Pueblo. Therefore, ICB testing using hydrolysate prepared with liquid agent and heel from actual munitions was planned and executed and is the subject of this report. The ability for a biological culture to degrade the hydrolyzed HD agent from a chemical was tested. The ability of the culture to degrade hydrolysate containing heel material representative of what can be expected from munitions washout was compared directly to performance of a bacterial culture degrading hydrolysate with no heel material. The study shows that hydrolyzed HD agent removed from a projectile washout study can be effectively degraded in a bioreactor system and that there was no effect from the hydrolyzed heel material during the 60-day steady-state period of the study. Performance of the laboratory scale ICB was comparable to earlier testing with the pilot-scale reactor.

this book is for serious, but not too serious, boaters. for me it opened the door to understanding why certain hull designs do diffeent things, why different marine engine technologies offer different advantages and disadvantages. I wish I had read it before I bought my first boat. But then again, now I know enough to appreciate the depth of understanding on the pages of this book.

I brought this book because I needed to work out if a particular boat with a particular outboard would meet certain performance parameters under certain sea conditions.
I was not able to do this with the information in this book.
I found "Propellor Handbook" by Dave Gerr much more usefull.

Touch of the Clown was certainly a touching story...it wasn't suspenseful, but for some reason I still couldn't put it down. I couldn't get enough of Barbara and Livvy's charming clown friend Cosmo...I think that adults would enjoy this book just as much as teenagers. This book is thoughtfully written, creative and touching all at the same time. A definate "YES! " for all future readers!

"Globalization" is here. Signified by an increasingly close economic interconnection that has led to profound political and social change around the world, the process seems irreversible. In this book, however, Harold James provides a sobering historical perspective, exploring the circumstances in which the globally integrated world of an earlier era broke down under the pressure of unexpected events.

James examines one of the great historical nightmares of the twentieth century: the collapse of globalism in the Great Depression. Analyzing this collapse in terms of three main components of global economics--capital flows, trade, and international migration--James argues that it was not simply a consequence of the strains of World War I but resulted from the interplay of resentments against all these elements of mobility, as well as from the policies and institutions designed to assuage the threats of globalism. Could it happen again? There are significant parallels today: highly integrated systems are inherently vulnerable to collapse, and world financial markets are vulnerable and unstable. While James does not foresee another Great Depression, his book provides a cautionary tale in which institutions meant to save the world from the consequences of globalization--think WTO and IMF, in our own time--ended by destroying both prosperity and peace.

Brilliantly written and scary.......2002-07-05

This well written, documented and academic book reads like a novel. Author explains how the British global-led economy was structured in the 19th century, its weaknesses and how it unraveled in the 1920s and 1930s. He reviews monetary policies, banking instability in the pre- and Depression era, trade and its collapse, the rising reaction against international migration starting in the 1890s and culminating after World War I, the opposition between nationalism and capital that existed after 1929 and finally assesses if a new depression could occur again. Despite the dates, the events it describes look so familiar to us today that it sends shivers down the spine.

Written in 2001, the author was still optimistic in his conclusions saying that unlike the 1930s, nobody today was challenging global finacial orthodoxy. But since Ben Laden destroyed the World Trade Center, Argentina has collapsed like in the 1930s, Brazil is on the path to renege its debt just like in 1931, many scandals have shaken Corporate America, stocks have fallen to after-September 11 levels. Le Pen, a right-extremist was a contender to Chirac in the French presidential elections. Migrations have become a hot debate in Europe. The Bush Administration like the Hoover one puts barriers on international trade (steel), does not participate in multilateral debates (UN, Climate, International Court) damaging the system of multilateral organizations, debates and trade. These collapsed in the 1930s to be replaced by bilaterel relations with the known consequences: a global depression and a global war.
