              Book Description

The increasing number of cross-border alliances and mergers both within Europe and between Europe and other parts of the world have made it imperative for students of management to have a thorough understanding of the European context for human resource management (HRM). This book enables managers and students to become "fluent" in the many various environments, approaches and practices that exist across Europe for managing human resources.

The text employs comprehensive comparable representative data collected longitudinally during the last decade and it also draws directly on the expertise of leading HRM scholars. Entirely fresh analyses of HRM in Europe, based on new and hitherto unpublished data are presented and this analysis is critically important for students, researchers and also for practitioners.

The book is divided into three parts: concepts and theoretical issues , trends in relation to these issues and comparisons between individual countries, and summaries and conclusions on the issue of convergence and divergence.

              * Offers a thorough evidence based approach drawing directly on the expertise of leading HRM scholars
              * Introduces entirely fresh analyses based on new and hitherto unpublished data
              * Provides a clear framework and structure for students, researchers and practitioners

                Book Description

Genetically modified (GM) food crops have inspired increasing controversy over the past decade. By the mid-1990s they were widely grown in the U.S., Canada, and Argentina, but precautionary regulations continue to limit their use elsewhere. The restrictive policies of Europe and Japan toward GM crops have been much discussed. Less attention has been paid to the policies affecting the adoption of GM crops in the developing world, where their potential impact on the availability and quality of food is even greater.

In this book Robert Paarlberg looks at the policy choices regarding GM food made by four important developing countries: Kenya, Brazil, India, and China. Of these, so far only China has approved the planting of GM crops. Paarlberg identifies five policy areas in which governments of developing countries can either support or discourage GM crops: intellectual property rights, biosafety, trade, food safety, and public research and investment. He notes that highly cautious biosafety policies have so far been the key reason that Kenya, Brazil, and India have hesitated to plant GM crops. These cautious policies have been strongly reinforced by international market forces and international diplomatic and NGO pressures. China has been less cautious toward GM crops, in part because there is less opportunity in China for international organizations or independent critics of GM crops to challenge official policy.

                  Book Description

The 2K1BC Workshop was a meeting of scientists from all over the world involved in cosmological observations in the millimetre wavelength range. Current and upcoming experiments were reported with present results and future forecasts: balloon borne projects which have detected the tiny temperature fluctuations in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), satellite programs that promise to give a clearer picture of observational cosmology, and ground-based observations which are the necessary complement to these projects. A separate section is devoted to the CMBR polarization that seems to be the main challenge in the near future. Particular attention was devoted to specific instrumental topics (optics, cryogenics, and detectors) and observational techniques.

Like his other volume, Precision Shooting, James Russell's Trap Shooting Secrets is thick with tips, advice, techniques, and practice drills for anyone intent on improving his or her skills in a highly refined, complex, and technically demanding sport. Russell begins with a primer on buying the right shotgun, and builds from there on the essentials of basic shooting and a whole gamut of typical beginner's mistakes before moving on to more advanced targets like the psychology of competitive shooting, developing deeper concentration skills, and strategies for how to write off some of the high costs of trap shooting as a tax deduction. As informative as the volume is, it loses some points on style: pages crammed with text will likely glaze over your shooting eye, and its diagrams and illustrations, useful as they are, are relegated to the book's butt end as if appended as an afterthought. --Jeff Silverman

                    1 out of 5 stars Nothing Special.......2007-09-21

Nothing special in this or his other book. I have been trapshooting for a couple of years and really didnt find anything in either of the authors books that I haven't already learned just from shooting or other books that are out there. I looked on the ATA website to see the authors averages but could not find a listing for him so it kind of makes me wonder just how much actual experience the author has. To me that is important as there are a lot of opinions from the author in the book that are hopefully backed by experience and not just someones own personal theories. I would recommend spending your money getting lessons/books from an accomplished, well known shooter rather than on this book.

This book is by far the best how to book I have ever
read. It has more info on attitude that I have ever come
across. Should be read by everyone that has anything
                    to do with sports!

5 out of 5 stars Off the hook-(that is good).......2007-04-05

This book was over the top, I wish it had more pictures to show a shooter what it could look like and I wish it had more info about the 27 yard line shoots but I see James has put that in another book. I give this book a 6 and if the scale went to 10 I would give it a 10, a lot of shooters should read this.
                    Thanks James,
                    Bubba

                    5 out of 5 stars Super Shooter.......2007-02-16

The lessons to learn in this book are monumental. If you don't improve your shooting give it up! The tips given are so great and so many it is impossible to acquire them in just a few outings. But, after every shoot a re-reading will out your faults to correct.

I'm a new shooter but an avid reader. This book is so poorly written I could not, after several attempts, get past the first few pages. It repeats itself so often it is very, very difficult to read. If you're a new shooter, look elswhere.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the previous book.......2004-10-22

Once again, as in Smith's WHAT THE PARROT TOLD ALICE, there's plenty of nature, fascinating mind-popping science (including a discussion of the theory of evolution that will knock both Darwinists and Creationists on their ears), finger-pointing at humankind's shortsightedness (as well as a deserved jab at Americans' refusal to embrace other cultures), suggestions that humans would do well to emulate animals, and wondrous encounters with the rainforest. There are plenty of animal characters such as the wise Lorax-like Marco, the Old Man of the Forest, love-monkey Nik, and survivor Jude, whose owner taught her to drink martinis and smoke Marlboros (no joke). There's an international (even extraterrestrial!) perspective, intelligent environmental and scientific discourse, as well as the sense that people are finally lighting candles rather than cursing the darkness.
Teens are fond of the phrase "Get real." In Smith's story, both teens and adults tell the world to get real and listen to WHAT THE ORANGUTAN TOLD ALICE.

4 out of 5 stars Imaginative Environmental Tale For Children.......2003-12-16

If you like fun and adventure, you'll like this story about two teenagers' journey deep into the rain forests of Borneo, in search of Orangutans. An imaginative and captivating tale, it is funny and at the same time poignant. It teaches children about the fragile balance between civilization and nature and the delicate web that binds us all together. It leaves us with an understanding of the plight of the Orangutans, as well as with a sense of hope.
I read this book with my 10 year old daughter and we loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Raising the environmental awareness of the next generation.......2003-12-15

I found this book while looking for a gift for my 15 year old nephew and was amazed by how much I enjoyed reading it myself. This is such a creative way to engage young people in looking at issues of habitat preservation, wildlife exploitation and extinction, conservation, (human) overpopulation and more! What might be difficult and abstract concepts for a young person to understand, are made real and personal through the stories of a young girl and the animals she meets in the rainforest. If we are really going to save the earth and all of it's inhabitants, we will have to get the next generation involved. This book has the power to do that and should be in the hands of children all around the world.

What The Orangutan Told Alice: A Rain Forest Adventure by environments Dale Smith is an engaging, informative, entertaining, environmental novel written for young adults and thoughtful conservationists of all ages. A story that relates human and ape, as much from the orangutan's point of view as that of Alice, What The Orangutan Told Alice is a meaningful story meant to make its reader aware of the importance of the natural world...

4 out of 5 stars A great read for young people of all ages!.......2002-04-03

I loved this book. Through the eyes of a 14 year old child we look into the world of the orangutan, the gibbon, and other animals of the world's shrinking rain-forest. There is a useful dictionary of rain-forest and animal terms. As a former teacher who now works full-time for primate protection, I think this book is suitable for readers from eleven years old right up to 100! It is really thought-provoking but never leaves one with the feeling of helplessness. Shirley McGreal, Chairwoman, International Primate Protection League

I found this book to be extremely useful in my recent apartment search & car purchase. Linda Mack Ross brings forth many valuable questions that consumers need to ask... questions that did not necessarily come off the top of my head prior to reading her book. I felt much more confident walking into the dealership after honing my skills with her teachings. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering (& leary of) spending money on a product you know nothing about (ie: a car).

Since the start of reform two decades ago, China's economy has experienced spectacular growth. Today China has grown to be the world's seventh largest economy or the world's second largest after the USA in terms of purchasing power parity. This volume serves as a convenient handbook for both scholars as an overview of China's major developments and transformation in the political, economic, legal and social spheres since 1978.

                                  Book Description

China's economic reform constitutes one of the most remarkable events of the second half of the twentieth century. It not only significantly improved the living conditions of the Chinese population but also provides a useful model of economic transition from central planning to a market economy. The gradual approach to reform adopted by the Chinese was widely regarded as suboptimal and likely to fail when compared to the shock therapy method applied in the former Soviet Union and the Eastern European economies. But China has out-performed other transitional economies. To many observers the Chinese experience is either a myth or a miracle. This volume addresses key questions about the initial economic foundations, the reform of macroeconomic policies and macroeconomic stability, the achievements of agricultural reform and the agricultural policy choices facing the Chinese government, the unique characteristics of the township and village enterprises, the successful reform of the state-owned enterprises, the development of factor markets, the contributions of the external sectors to economic growth, the lessons of the Chinese experience for transitional economies, and the challenges for economic threory. Growth without Miracles brings together thirty widely cited articles by prominent economists in the field of China studies to offer authoritative and through assessment and analyses of Chinas experience during the reform period. It provides a complete story for teachers and students of courses on the Chinese economy and will be of considerable interest to researchers, officials, and business people who want to understand past experiences, current problems, and the future direction of the Chinese economy.

                                    Book Description

In the mid-1910s, what historians call the "Golden Age of Chinese Capitalism" began, accompanied by a technological transformation that included the drastic expansion of China's "Gutenberg revolution." Gutenberg in Shanghai is a brilliant examination of this process. It finds the origins of that revolution in the country's printing industries of the late imperial period and analyzes their subsequent development in the Republican era.

Under diverse social, political, and economic influences, this technological and cultural revolution saw woodblock printing replaced with Western mechanical processes. This book, which relies on documents previously unavailable to both Western and Chinese researchers, demonstrates how Western technology and evolving traditional values resulted in the birth of a unique form of print capitalism whose influence on Chinese culture was far-reaching and irreversible. Its conclusion contests scholarly arguments that view China's technological development as slowed by culture, or that interpret Chinese modernity as mere cultural continuity.

A vital reevaluation of Chinese modernity, Gutenberg in Shanghai will appeal to scholars of Chinese history. Likewise, it will be enthusiastically received by specialists in cultural studies, political science, sociology, the history of the book, and the anthropology of science and technology.

3 out of 5 stars Confucianism and Chinese Capitalism.......2006-07-22

The author is the director of the Euro-Asia Centre, INSEAD and Professor of Management Studies, the University of Hong Kong Business School. He is a specialist on Asian management and Chinese capitalism.

The key objectives of this book are twofold. First, this book follows the Weberian premise that cultural values significantly affect economic behaviour of people. Second, Chinese family business represents a new form of capitalism which is different from their counterparts in the West.

Based on in-depth interviews of 72 Chinese entrepreneurs and their senior executives in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South East Asia, Professor Redding concludes that Confucianism impacts on the emergence of family business in the Diaspora Chinese communities in Asia. Confucianism becomes core cultural values that places great emphasis on paternalism, collectivism, personalism, social hierarchy, and familism.

This book should be the first and also the most comprehensive study of traditional national culture and Chinese family business in the Diaspora Chinese communities. The adoption of qualitative in-depth interviews as the key research instrument becomes effective for data collection from Chinese entrepreneurs. However, the name of this book should be entitled `The Spirit of Overseas Chinese Capitalism' instead of `The Spirit of Chinese Capitalism' because Professor Redding can convincingly show why Confucian values become key economic motivator in the Diaspora Chinese communities but he mentions nothing about Confucianism and the emergence of family business in Mainland China. Readers might also question whether Confucian values in China are different from other Diaspora Chinese communities in Asia. Current management literature has demonstrated that cultural values in Mainland China witness a great departure from traditional Confucian values so that it is quite controversial to conclude that Confucian values are still the most important economic motivator. Besides, due to globalisation and the influence of western culture, some of the distinct character of cultural values such as `protecting face' and `bring honour to one's ancestor' are no longer to receive high recognition in the Diaspora Chinese communities. Therefore, the adoption of cultural approach to explain economic success of Chinese family business in either Mainland China or the Diaspora Chinese communities remains highly controversial.

                                            Book Description

Market Cultures examines the spectacular growth of capitalist enterprise among overseas Chinese and Southeast Asians. It does so, not through formal models, but by way of the varied cultures and organizations in which Asian capitalism is embedded. Eschewing talk of a uniform Asian "miracle," the book shows that there existed complex precedents for and against market capitalism in East and Southeast Asia, precedents that reflected subcultural heritages of religion, ethnicity, gender, and class. The case studies illuminate a cultural variety unacknowledged in most analyses of modern capitalism but vitally important for anyone wishing to understand one of the great economic transformations of our time.
