I have been privileged to participate in Dr. LaBASTILLE'S Writer's Workshops for the past ten years. Her works from Woodswoman to Jaguar Totem have brought our family much reading pleasure. As an Ecologist, Dr. LaBastille takes you on several journeys that enlighten the reader to what it means to spend time alone in her cabin in the wilds of the Adirondacks, where she relates to her enviornment. She is an intellectual with indepth perception about the woods she knows so well and all the ingredients that make up Mother Nature. She travels nationally and internationally and is well known in her field of endeavor. And, in addition possesses much skill in photography and lectures about her works. Jaguar Totem is an excellent read and I was proud to add this book to my collection of Dr. LaBASTILLE'S LITERARY accomplishments. Her work is important to the present generation and generations to come.

If you've never read one of Anne LaBastille's books Treat Yourself! From Woodswoman to Jaguar Totem you will experience hours of entertainment as you follow the much-awarded wildlife ecologist on her many adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Another Success For Anne LaBastille.......2000-12-16

Anne LaBastille has done it again. Whether you're searching for Quetzals in Guatemala, helping to develope a new National Park, or just listening to the surf pound the shores of the Dominican Republic you'll love following Anne on her newest adventure.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2000-09-27

Anne LaBastille's ninth book, Jaguar Totem, was intended to convert readers into caring and compassionate conservationists. She succeeds admirably through clear, descriptive and fascinating prose that instantly transports readers to exotic, rare locales such as Guatemala, Anegada, and Brazil. Her stories bring readers into strange new worlds full of drama, tragedy, heroism, and suspense.

Many readers know Anne LaBastille's Woodswoman, which details her Walden-like existence in the Adirondack Mountains. Jaguar Totem is a very different world, full of peoples with divergent agendas, with different animals, and with stunning new experiences. An example of the latter is the "miracle of horizontal precipitation" or sideways-blown water at Volcan Baru in Panama which adds as much as 20 inches to the annual moisture to downstream humans and animals who rely on it. An equally surprising example was found in the Dominican Republic. There, while tracking manatees, she was shown how manatees drink fresh water from underwater "boils." Fresh water bubbles up from the sea floor some 20 to 40 feet from shore. Anne swam down and filled an empty bottle with fresh water from one of these "boils."

Her writings are informative, as when she notes that most of Amazonia is "literally a desert covered with trees." Unlike soil in the U.S. midwest corn belt, nutrients in the tropical rain forest reside in the vegetation itself. It's the foliage that is fertile!

Firsthand, LaBastille learns from the native peoples themselves that the overarching problem is population. As hard as LaBastille works to save parks, she was told, "Saving a park like Manu (in Peru) is like trying to cure cancer with an aspirin. As long as the world population increases, we'll have more and more trouble protecting bits of rain forest from people who need farmland or rangeland for food and fiber."

Updates to her stories tell readers what happened after LaBastille returned to the Adirondacks. The updates add the perspective of time and context, informing readers what they came to care about.

The final page of "Afterthoughts" tells readers what they can do to save the natural resources and beauty of our earth. Most are unlikely to have the courage or capability to try to duplicate what she did, but can console themselves that they can do something, such as donating to conservation groups or putting up bluebird boxes. They should read LaBastille's books to learn what they missed!

5 out of 5 stars Superb tale of the travels and studies of an ecologist.......2000-08-29

I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone. I found myself savoring each sentence like a fine wine or a juicy steak out on a stump in front of one of my favorite author's cabins in the Adirondacks. This is one of Anne's best works! Finely written, passionate, insightful, and full of interesting stories. The photographs were superb. I'm so glad she wrote it. I've even referenced it in a couple of my environmental science texts as a great book to read to learn more about the plight of tropics and the world's wildlife.

                  5 out of 5 stars Boxing History.......2006-10-29

If you like boxing and its glorious history, this book is for you. Bert Sugar is the recognized king of boxing writers, and he knows his stuff. A must for the boxing fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the Sweetest Scientists.......2006-08-07

All Top 10, Top 25, Top 100, etc. lists are designed to provoke arguments, and this one does. All of the fighters in the book deserve to be here (I guess, there are a lot from before 1920 that are waaaay before my time). The disagreements come with the rankings, why fighter A is ranked higher than fighter B. But Bert Sugar backs up his opinions with facts, which is all you can ask, agree with him or not. Great reading for any fan of the squared circle.

2 out of 5 stars A Book Written by a Stubborn Old Man.......2006-08-04

I have tremendous respect for Sugar, but putting Iron Mike Tyson at # 100 is absolute garbage. Tyson in his prime is at least, at the very LEAST a top 50 all-time great. Not only was he a great fighter, but also consider the fact that he is the biggest box-office draw in boxing history. During the 1980's Tyson was the MOST popular athlete in America, and this was during a time when Bird, Magic, Jordan, Montana, and Ray Leonard were all in their primes! He defended his title 10 times from 1986-1990 and even regained the title when he was past his prime in 1996. Rocky Marciano the most overrated fighter of all time only defended the title 6 times. That 49-0 record should not be seen so sacred as the so called experts see it. Did Tyson become a joke after he bite Holyfield's ear? Yes and with a capital J, but in the 1988 revised edition of The 100 Greatest Fighters in Boxing History, Sugar ranks Tyson at # 27. That is more realistic than Tyson's current ranking of # 100. The fact is the majority of the fighters in this book are so old that young boxing fans don't know who they are and quite frankly a few of the names in this book don't matter. Mike Tyson mattered and next to Ali is the BIGGEST superstar in boxing history. Sorry Jack Dempsy, the 2 Sugar Rays, and Joe Louis, but that's just the way it is. Bert Sugar is just far too old and stubborn to understand that.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well-written.......2006-07-17

This latest edition of "Boxing's Greatest Fighters" is an update from the 1984 edition. I have both copies, mainly because I was curious to see how Bert Sugar re-ranked some of my favorite fighters. For example, Sugar Ray Leonard moved from #56 to #25. Overall, this is a well-written, entertaining book. It's probably not logical to rate fighters from different eras, but the concept is hard to resist for a boxing fan, especially one interested in its early history. As with many others reviewers, I don't agree with some of Sugar's rankings, both overall his list makes good sense.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-03-16

I've always admired and respected Bert Sugar for his intelligent and often humorous analyst of boxing history and the great fighters of the past, however, I must sadly say this book was terrible. Aside from an occasional comical quote or commit the book was simply silly and insulting to any boxing aficionado. For example, Bert actually ranked Joe Frazier higher than Carlos Monzon and Marvelous Marvin Hagler in this publication. He did this despite the fact that Carlos Monzon and Hagler were vastly more dominate fighters in their eras as well as having far longer and more glorious title reigns. Also his decision to not include all-time greats such as Lennox Lewis and Michael Spinks was ridiculous especially when you take into consideration some of the fighters that did make the list. Overall, this book is a mediocre read that offers information on many turn of century fighters but I wouldn't recommend it for any serious boxing fan.

                    Book Description

Boxing began in Cleveland in the 1880s. As pugilism was an illegal activity, brawling workers from the iron ore docks surreptitiously met on ìWhiskey Islandî to settle disputes. They would be followed by crowds of spectators who cheered them on and often ended up fleeing from the sheriff. Book Description

Objects and commodities have frequently been studied to assess their position within consumer - or material - culture, but all too rarely have scholars examined the politics that lie behind that culture. This book fills the gap and explores the political and state structures that have shaped the consumer and the nature of his or her consumption. From medieval sumptuary laws to recent debates in governments about consumer protection, consumption has always been seen as a highly political act that must be regulated, directed or organized according to the political agendas of various groups. An internationally renowned group of experts looks at the emergence of the rational consuming individual in modern economic thought, the moral and ideological values consumers have attached to their relationships with commodities, and how the practices and theories of consumer citizenship have developed alongside and within the expanding state. How does consumer identity become available to people and how do they use it? How is consumption negotiated in a dictatorship? Are material politics about state politics, consumer politics, or the relationship between these and consumer practices? From the specifics of the politics of consumption in the French Revolution - what was the status of rum? How complicated did a vinegar recipe have to be before the resultant product qualified as 'luxury'? - to the highly contentious twentieth-century debates over American political economy, this original book traces the relationships among political cultures, consumers and citizenship from the eighteenth century to the present.

From Pat Buchanan to Ralph Nader, America's right and left are united in their conviction that free trade is evil. They are joined by most trade unions, environmentalists, and members of Congress (as shown by their refusal to let President Clinton negotiate wider free-trade agreements). Yet the growth of world trade is at least partly responsible for the American economy's robust good health and for the rise of living standards worldwide. From Third World to World Class is an excellent source of intellectual ammunition to counter the rising tide of protectionism. Peter Marber, a New York money manager specializing in emerging markets, has written a reasoned celebration of world capitalism's benign effects. One chapter title sums up his optimism: "How Multinationals Are Helping the Poor Get Richer and the Rich Stay Rich." Marber believes that rich nations need not fear low-wage competitors, not so long as the rich nations educate their workforces. Rising Third World economies will become lucrative markets for Western technology, entertainment, services, and a host of consumer brands. That is, if protectionism does not halt the virtuous cycle that is raising billions of people out of poverty. --Barry Mitzman

                              Book Description

From the Americas to Asia, rapid growth and economic transformation are creating a wide array of new business opportunities-for multinational corporations and individual investors alike. But the rise of the developing world is also challenging long-held beliefs that the industrialized nations would call all the shots. In this highly original analysis of developing nations, investment, and global business expansion - written against the backdrop of financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America - Peter Marber identifies the risks and rewards of investing in emerging markets, and reveals new sources of conflict as value systems clash in a game of global economic integration where there will inevitably be financial losers, as well as winners.

5 out of 5 stars Redressing the Balance.......2001-02-08

Marber offers some considerable insight into the growing magnitude of emerging markets in the global economy, redressing the balance of the plethora of protectionist literature that would rather see Third World remain third. What is particularly refreshing about his approach is that he embraces the negative sentiment, potential risks, and shortcomings of emerging markets investing, and offers practical and forthright advice on how to make it work.

I hold a position in a bank operating in Central America. This book offers an insight that has to be shared by the business community throughout the world! Marber shows how the teachings of David Ricardo are being practiced by people throughout the world everyday. The opportunities and road blocks to achieve world class are defined clearly not only for first world countries but also for the developing ones. His book is a great introduction to the subject. A well researched book with great sources of information for college students and proffesionals that want to participate in these markets. A great contribution to the field of emerging markets, especially, if you take in consideration that there are not that many books covering this matter. Not many professionals on this field are able to write in such entertaining way.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Background Material for Emerging Markets Investors.......1999-09-09

I found this well researched book from the author's "Emerging Markets Insider" column on WORLDLYINVESTOR.COM (also highly recommended). Most investors have forgotten these markets in recent years due to crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America. Having been born in an "emerging market" (South Africa), it is interesting to see a "First Worlder's" perspective. Mr. Marber rightly has pointed out that these are important markets (many up more than 50% this year), and anyone interested in solid background material should find this book useful. His weekly web pieces on emerging market stocks are very timely and I found his book complimentary to those articles. Yes, the Dow Jones and Nasdaq have been soaring. But many emerging markets have outperformed them this year and over time. There are too few books that cover these markets well, and this is one of the better examples I have read.

                              Book Description

Why do states sometimes discriminate in favor of certain states and at other times choose to pursue nondiscriminatory policies? In answering these questions, Lars S. Skålnes stresses the international political importance of foreign economic policy, arguing that trade, foreign investment, and foreign aid policies are strategic instruments great powers use to manage political and military relations with allies and adversaries.
Skålnes explains changes in foreign economic policy in terms of shifting strategic assessments regarding the importance of military support from allies. When states need military support from their allies to meet threats to their security, they will adopt discriminatory foreign economic policies in an attempt to strengthen alliance relations. When states can go it alone without military support, by contrast, they will not pursue foreign economic policies that discriminate in favor of either allies or other countries. Discriminatory policies, Skalnes argues, are important strategic instruments for several reasons. First, they can be used to tie countries to a military alliance. Second, they are useful as signals of intention. Third, discriminatory policies may strengthen an ally militarily by increasing the economic resources available for military purposes.
Skålnes provides detailed accounts of the grand strategies of Germany (1879-1914), France (1887-1914), Great Britain (1919-1939), and the United States (1945-1967).
Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy will be important reading for scholars and students in the fields of national security studies, international political economy, and economic history, and to economists working on problems associated with foreign investment and trade generally and customs union theory and discriminatory trade agreements specifically.
Lars S. Skålnes is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Oregon.

This is an eminently readable, and a persuasive account of the impact that military-strategic assessments have on foreign economic policies. The research seems carefully done, both from primary and secondary documents, and the author gives due consideration to alternative explanations. This is the only book I have seen that adequately describes the links between strategy and foreign economic policies with the broad historical sweep that this book has. It was particularly interesting in terms of the forces that shape foreign economic policies. For these reasons this book is a "must read" for anyone interested in the grand strategic role that foreign economic policies play.

                                Book Description

This volume presents the main findings of the research programme Technological Change and Regional Development in Europe, backed by the German Research Council. In doing so it examines the relationship between technological change and regional development by means of empirical surveys. In six years, a total of 50 research projects have been realised during three phases of two years. The surveys undertaken dealt with the manufacturing and service sector. In addition, numerous projects were carried out on the role that research institutions play in developing innovation processes in firms. The empirical surveys focused on Europe and covered regions in Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia, and Sweden.
