Getting right down to it..........2007-05-28
If you want to understand mind manipulation, this is the book for you. Most of the info in this book gets right down to it. Although a small portion of the content in this book is a little far fetched, most of it is invaluable information. If you ever sit there questioning someone's intent in certain situations, when your gut tells you something is wrong, this book will help you understand exactly what that person is trying to do to you and what their intentions truly are. You will also see, though, that all of us have a little bit of manipulator in us. This book will help you pinpoint who the master manipulators are in your life. Should the situation call for it, it also will show you how to use certain manipulation techniques here and there on others. I have read other books on this subject written by psychologists and I was completely unimpressed. The psychologists who believe that they are knowledgeable through studying books and who have no street smarts, have nothing on Haha Lung!
Good Lord!.......2006-12-29
Wow. I can't believe all the glowing reviews here. This book is a joke people, and I mean that literally. I am a psychologist. I have a Masters degree in experimental psychology, I do research in the area of cognitive science, and I am working on my PhD in decision science. I am NOT saying that the principles and points in this book are wrong and that I know of the correct ones, but rather that there is no such thing as the drivel discussed in this book. Thank goodness. The last thing we need is a bunch of unstable ninja wannabes who can actually manipulate minds. Those who think that the psychological principles in this book are sound haven't a chance of becoming some kind of "psychological manipulator," for their understanding of psychology is so astronomically minute that they can't even recognize that the stuff discussed in this book is pure fiction. I'll give an example: Despite what this book claims, it is simply not true that people glance in certain directions when attempting to recall certain types of memories, or when attempting to generate certain types of thoughts. People do NOT look up and to the right when trying to construct visual images or straight and to the left when trying to remember auditory experiences. This is a psychological folk tale that was generated by Richard Bandler and Robert Dilts, two of the main figures in Neuro Linguistic Programming, which, if you don't know, is a sham. This notion was made popular in the film The Negotiator starring Samuel L. Jackson. Alas, however, it's a bunch of hokum that is not corroborated by research. Try it. It doesn't work. And don't buy this book unless you're just looking for a few solid belly laughs.
An Excellent Manual of Psychology Fundamentals.......2006-12-22
First and foremost, I will warn that the book Black Science is the same exact book as Mind Manipulation with the exception of a different publisher. I made the mistake of ordering both, and the return fees aren't worth it. Amazon.com might need to take a re-look at their packaging deals . . .
Well, this is a book review, so I'll get into reviewing the book. I personally found that Mind Manipulation is an informative read with several excellent viewpoints given by the author. Haha Lung has a creative writing style that everyone can relate to, and the techniques and ideas he focuses on are very much valid. Whether or not these listed techniques were used by the ninja is subject to debate, there are those who argue for both sides. That is however beside the point. This book provides information that may "shed some light" on the motives and actions of the fellow human being, as well as letting us realize some truths about ourselves. It also warns of the regular psychological ploys others may use to take an advantage, and what we can do to watch for and counteract such subtle mental attacks.
Overall this book is very much worth the money, and I am very pleased I purchased it. Is the book 100% perfect? Well, of course not. No book is. A few of the techniques may be a little far-fetched, but this is a tiny percentage of the book, as most of the information is extremely informative and useful. If you're looking for more books on practical psychology that you can apply to your everyday life, I also would reccomend to you the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, as well as "A Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi. If you're looking for more books that deal with ninjutsu history and training, both Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi and Stephen K. Hayes have excellent books that cater to both the history of the art of Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu as well as its techniques and forms. I would also reccomend that those looking for a better understanding of the meld of psychology and fighting or military command in any form should read "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu.
I give this book two thumbs up. May it be as useful to you as it was me.
Nothing that resembles Ninjutsu.......2006-03-03
This book seeks to offer a quick ninjutsu solution to the uninformed. If you're looking for REAL ninjutsu(and I do wish to stress REAL) then search out any book written by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi.
Fun and quite interesting, but I won't be leaving it out on the coffee table...........2006-02-19
One of the great things about Amazon is the ability to order books that you might feel a bit red-faced about buying in the bookshop.
I'm sure there are worse examples, but I think this is one such book, a guilty pleasure of dubious value, but quite fun.
I have to say that this is by no means an authoritative work on mind-manipulation or influence, but it took me back to my teenage years when I read lots of books on martial arts and ninja training, much of it of doubtful value, others based on the actual martial disciplines of the ninja.
I did like the stories of ancient Japan featured in this book, of legendary warriors such as Miyamoto Musashi, but then the book has significant weaknesses, too, for example the light section on hypnotism.
It also has some apparently standard NLP techniques that I seem to have read in about five other books, and I could do without.
This is a very easy to read book, it took a couple of days to read, which is enjoyable but not of great value.
All-in-all quite fun, but by no means sensational.
Book Description
The fighting skills of the shadow warrior - the ninja - made them feared throughout Japan. But the wise man had greater fear for their bloodless methods of domination, which the ninja mind masters preferred to crude physical violence. Ninja broke through their enemies' mental defenses using direct attack or stealth, comparing such operations to invading an enemy fortress. In this guided tour through the mysterious realm of the ninja, martial arts experts Dr. Haha Lung and Christopher B. Prowant reveal the secrets that will allow you to tell when someone is lying to you, implant false memories, tailor your attack by using the specific keys to each individual's mind, use verbal patterns and body language to earn your foe's utter trust, interrogate using unbeatable psychological methods and much more. You will also learn the terrifying truth behind modern mind-control, propaganda and brainwashing techniques used by cults (and our own government), as well as take a look ahead to the future of mass mind control. The wars of tomorrow may well be won or lost in the battlefield of the mind. This book could mean the difference between winning your freedom and losing everything.

Very informational, Loved it........2004-09-24
I just completed this book and I found it very engrossing in terms of how much information they present to you. I did not want to stop reading it every night because of how interesting the topics were that they discussed. From hypnotism and how it's used to what the Japanese have recently done to play "mind games". If your interested in any sort of "black science", this is definitely a great read that packs so much information in such a small book.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK - GET THE NEW VERSION.......2004-08-20
If you are interested in this book I would recommend Mind Manipulatin by the same authors but a different publisher. Just get that one. If you are told or tempted to get this book and that one DONT they are litterally the same book just from different publishers.
laugh up a lung? or real information?.......2003-12-07
If you have ever been in any religion, you will find the words of this book to ring true.
I went from being idealistic to realizing that leading questions can cause your mind to think whatever your d*mn religious leader wants you to.

Rhan Van.......2005-12-25
I liked the next two better, Rhan Van: A Worthy Oponent, and Rhan Van: Magic Nation. But they all are good. They are quite different then the usual YA, and I don't think they would apeal to everybody. But the characters and the storyline apeal very much to me, and I'd much rather read this than some things. Altogether fairly well written, the characters are new, they don't have the same personality you see over and over...and the plotline is quite different. I'd be willing to recomend it to certain types of people, but I don't think it would appeal to everybody.

The 1999 World Trade Organization protests will forever be associated with violence. But, outside of Seattle, where the event has been debated ad infinitum, the cause, victims, and perpetrators of that violence have been lost to a haze of media-generated moments that simplified an inspired, multifaceted, and generally nonviolent event. Through eyewitness chronicles of the events in Seattle and demonstrations in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, muckrakers Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair, as well as a handful of other contributing journalists, vividly relive the opening salvos of a new radical movement in America. While they are understandably effusive about the success of the actions, which clearly placed the issues of anti-globalization and economic justice onto the national and international political agendas, the book's emphasis--and its impact--is on what they see as a national trend towards the violent criminalization of protest and the increasing use of paramilitary forces in law enforcement.
In Seattle, which was transformed from a street festival to a police state in a matter of hours, St. Clair mingles at the cafés and warehouses that acted as staging areas for direct actions, and walks the streets where dancing, drumming, and peaceful sit-ins were punctuated by shocking acts of police brutality--unprovoked attacks with rubber bullets and concussion grenades, a waitress pepper-sprayed while leaving her shift, her boyfriend beaten and arrested, copies of the Bill of Rights confiscated, Christmas carolers tear-gassed. In D.C., the police break into homes of opposition leaders, spy on their activities, pressure print shops to close, and make illegal sweep arrests. But Cockburn and St. Clair are not satisfied with excoriating the police; they also turn their vitriolic pens against those within the protest movement who aren't as radical as they, from labor unions to "establishment greens." The authors would have done better to devote the space to a more articulated explanation of exactly why they were protesting against the WTO than to causing divisiveness between those on the same side. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
It's been called the most intense popular uprising since the protests against the Vietnam War. In October 1999, fifty thousand citizens occupied the streets in a successful effort to shut the World Trade Organization's ministerial meeting. Trade unionists, environmentalists, human rights advocates and farmers converged on Seattle to denounce the new global economy. Street corners were occupied by irate French farmers, Earth First!ers locked themselves to hotel doors to prevent WTO delegates from exiting, the convention center was circled by a human chain, and black-clad anarchists roamed the streets, smashing the windows of Gap, Niketown, and the Bank of America. The Seattle cops responded fiercely, saturating the air with tear gas, attacking demonstrators with riot clubs, rubber bullets, and pepper spray. The street battle raged for three days. Six hundred people were arrested, held without lawyers at a local military base. But when the smoke and gas cleared, the protesters had prevailed: the WTO talks had collapsed. Five Days that Shook the World takes you onto the streets of Seattle with on-the-spot reporting and photographs. But it also looks at the broader issues raised by the protest: the secretive and undemocratic practice of the WTO, the trampling on rights to assembly and free speech by deploying the military to put down protest, and the menace to individual liberties of globalization and offshore government.

Needs some balance, but believable........2005-06-15
My first read-through left me thinking "How biased. There's no way to back these ideas up." But that's the way it's supposed to be. A movement is about feelings and humans being; let the sociologists and labor economists debate the facts and figures.
The political bickering - St. Clair et al's pointed attacks on Sierra Club, Carl Pope, and especially labor leaders, seem out of joint with the solidarity aspect of a movement - but this is how it is. And this book could have been more a platform to assault political enemies both near and far, but stayed mostly on task.
Overall, there was a chaotic feel to the narrative, which accurately reflects the state of subsequent public dissents, most noteworthy the pathetic demonstration in Chicago in 2002.
To really understand all aspects of the movement, one needs to include another perspective. I recommend:
"Globalization and its Discontents" Joe Stiglitz - to understand the macro scale of these protests.
"Breaking Rank" by Norm Stamper - a police account of the Seattle riots, written by a progressive police chief in perhaps the most progressive city in the U.S.
Remember folks, Seattle was probably the one city in the U.S. (besides San Francisco) that would be willing to tolerate such large scale dissent - and it did not. There's a reason for that.
Oooh That Smell.......2003-11-14
The rebellion against global trade policies that erupted on the streets of Seattle was a warning shot heard round the world: transnational corporations and their political servants will be confronted by the people they seek to exploit. Other demostrations followed: in Quebec, Washington, Milan, Davos, and Cancun. The corporadoes have no place left to hide, no place left to hold their secret covens without hearing the voices of the growing global opposition. But there are no illusions here. This new global movement is taking root more firmly in Europe and the developing world than in the US, where its growth is stunted and suppressed by a reflexive loyalty to the Democratic Party, despite its descent into the darkness of neoliberalism. St. Clair's gripping diary of that week describes with chilling prescience the divisions in the movement between the traditional liberals and the new radicals, fed up with being spoonfed morsels by Democratic Party politicians whose real allegiance is to the same network of corporate fat cats who dreamed up the WTO in the first place. These fissures played out first in the 2000 election, when the labor unions and mainstream greens that chanted slogans of defiance in Seattle all came back into the plantation and supported the campaign of Al Gore, a chief architect of NAFTA and the WTO. Now, scared to death by the spectre of another Bush term, the divisions will become even more stark, the rationalizations of surrender more hysterical. This book is must reading for progressives, both for the history it describes and the future it predicts.
Eye of the Storm.......2002-06-17
A wonderful blend of first-hand, eye-witness reporting and even-handed analysis. Jeremy St. Clair's 40 page "Seatle Diary" alone makes the book worthy of reading. Perhaps the best piece of journalism to emerge from the growing body of Seatle stories. Two clips involving WTO delegates (one pounching a black lady in the face, another waving his revolver at a protestor baracade) utterly blew me away. And in the spirit of the lively and diverse protesters, the book is also funny at times, as when a South Central LA youth named Thomas replies to St. Clair's question, "Why are you here?" He answers: "I like turtles and I hate that ... Bill Gates." To which Sinclair replies, "Good enough for me." You won't be able to put the book down. It has a very genuine, honest and human feel. Along the way, you will run into Brower, the famous French cheese-maker Jose Bove, some interesting college professors, Sierra Club's Carl Pope, many of the so-called "anarchists" which every major media venue categorized all protestors as, and many other important people who turned out for the "Battle in Seatle." The book will not only give you a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding the protests and the subsequent media storm, it will also make you feel like you were there. St. Clair's writing is that good.
Prescient book, given the Retaliatory Attack on America.......2001-09-18
America had never seen anything like the mass movement that took over Seattle to confront the World Trade Organization in the fall of 2001: environmentalists, religious & human rights groups, farmers, civil rights organizations, ordinary people. They came with a message of peaceful protest. They were met with shock troops, billy clubs, rubber bullets and tear gas. 5 Days that Shook the World takes you onto the streets of Seattle and the protests in Washington, Philly and Los Angeles that followed during that remarkable year. But this book isn't about illusions or myths, but about the hard truths. St. Clair and Cockburn were eerily prescient in their prediction that the vaunted coalition of labor and greens would be difficult to hold together as the demands of political reality set in and as the corporate press and the government moved to counter and undermine the movement(s). Big labor and the big greens soon abandoned the cause by endorsing the campaign of pseudo-Democrat, Al Gore, the chief broker of NAFTA and the WTO treaties. Other leaders turned away from the protests following the bloody reprisals of the police in
Quebec and Genoa. But that doesn't mean the anti-globalization movement is dead. Cockburn and St. Clair point out the fakers, but they also show you where the true heart of the movement for global social and environmental justice beats. This book is a a much needed guide to what just may be the most important struggle of our times...
Growing Consciousness, Growing Repression.......2001-09-18
Within the growing literature of the anti-globalization movement is the book Five Days that Shook the World, which intimately puts you on the street for the events of N30, through St. Clair's Seattle Diary, the DC protests with JoAnn Wypejewski, and the Democratic National Convention in LA. In addition to the firsthand accounts by the people involved in the protests, the book chronicles the growing consciousness of the anti-globalization movement and the concurrent repression of the movement by the police state. This book is an excellent account of both the success of a movement that has unified people throughout the U.S. and world, including steel workers and environmental activists, and also shows how the heads of labor and the environmental movement had their own agenda during the Seattle protests and sold out those on the streets for a seat at the table with the WTO. The photographs by Sekula add a visual element to the work that complements the writing of St. Clair and Cockburn and gives a personal face to the fight against the WTO, as well as shows the facelessness of the jackboot state. Five Days that Shook the World is a vital narrative in the growing history of the anti-globalization movement and the authors are uncompromising in their analysis of where the movement stands, who betrayed the movement, and how the State has begun to work to limit the voices calling for an alternative to the WTO, IMF, and the destruction wreaked by global capitalism.

Explains what we don't know.......2007-03-05
I rate this book as amongst the most influential in my life. The author spends the first half of the book explaining why even though things may look much more advanced and different now than 2000 years ago, the same underlying forces are at play. The powerful are in control and we live under a system of mercantilism and not anything resembling the free trade we are taught at school.
I have read widely and believe that the solutions proposed by Dr Smith in the second half of this book focus too narrowly on the economic aspects of peoples lives and tend to be very prescriptive such as specific taxation reforms. I prefer the writings of Noam Chomsky who is less proscriptive but generally has more the right idea - that as human beings our main goal should be to let everyone live in freedom and peace where everyone is able to be himself. People just want to be free to control their own destiny and economics is only one part of this solution.
Despite not agreeing with all the solutions posed by Dr Smith I still fully rate this book because it is the first half that will blow your socks off. You do not have to agree with the second half and can pick and choose which reforms should be implemented as I did. This book changed my thinking forever and I now realise and understand the real forces at play when I see news items and read books.
A mind-altering experience.......2005-01-20
Essentially this book is an extremely in-depth deconstruction of neo-liberal economics/politics. I had long thought myself almost unique (outside Academia) in the depth and breadth of my reading, but after having read this book, I realized that I understood very little about what was really going on. It was a humbling experience, to say the least. But it was also liberating, in that for the first time in my life, the opaque inconsistencies between what I had been taught in university and the realities I saw happening in the news became transparent. The author additionally offers many progressive ideas for a more just, efficient and ultimately sustainable economic system, which in my experience is very rare indeed. If you are looking for something more substantial than Michael Moore's often inarticulate rants - albeit less entertaining - than this is the book for you. BE WARNED: once you read this book, nothing will ever seem quite the same.
Getting on the right path to world peace and prosperity.......2004-02-12
I was first impressed by JW Smith's book, The World's Wasted Wealth 2, filled as it is with ideas about how to reduce waste. His Economic Democracy book exposes the roots of world poverty and identifies how all people everywhere can become truly wealthy while respecting and conserving the world's ecology. I use several chapters in the undergraduate sociology course I teach called, Cooperation and Conflict. Every chapter is packed with information that we all need to know in order to participate responsibly in redirecting government policies.
Review of Economic Democracy: The Political Struggle of the.......2004-01-26
A professor of economics once told me that "mainstream economics is 95% ideology and only 5% social science." This wonderful book by J.W. Smith shows why that is true. I found it utterly complelling and could not put it down. By exposing the macro-economic mechanisms of the past five centuries, Smith blows neo-liberal ideology right out of the water. This book should be required reading everywhere in the world. It points the way toward a liberated and decent world-order and shows that a just world-order would not be that difficult to achieve. This book lays the foundation for a new global economics of freedom and prosperity. Thank-you Dr. Smith!
Highly recommended.......2004-01-25
I've searched my whole life to the reasons for and the solution to world poverty and hunger. This work offers both in a well reasearched and thought out, realistic approach. The reasons for poverty become obvious after reading Dr. Smith's book. The posibility of ending poverty by building buying power in the Third World while improving the standard of living in the developed world is as brilliant as it feasible. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers to solving the world's ills
