4 out of 5 stars Saving our north west forests.......2004-01-19

This is not a new book but the subject matter - the need for the preservation of forests along the north west coast of North America - is as relevant and important now as it was then. Looking back, it's encouraging to see that we have made some progress towards this since 1996, even if it is progress of the "two steps forward, one step back variety".

This beautifully illustrated book consists of five essays, one for each of the geographical regions from northern California to south eastern Alaska. The five writers offer very different perspectives on the ecological issues facing the forests in their own area. Each essay, in its own way, addresses issues common to the whole region. The book in its entirety looks at the past of these forests and offers a look at the future. In 2004 we are eight years into that future so we can compare our progress, or lack thereof, with the hopes expressed.

This book tries to engage us, as readers, to understand and treasure our forests for what they are and not just for the wood or wealth they provide. "...the more we humans know, the more we will care, and the more we care the better will we take care."

          Amen to that.

Neil Peart cycles his way through West Africa and brings us along with him, dysentery and all. The Masked Rider details his physical and spiritual journey, through photographs, journal entries, and tales of adventure. Peart's "masks" are the masks that we wear--culture, psychology, labels, expectations--and his book reveals how traveling in a very foreign land allows us to peer behind them.

            Book Description

Dysentery, drunken soldiers, and corrupt officials provide the background for Neil Peart's physical and spiritual cycling journey through West Africa. The prolific drummer for the rock band Rush travels through African villages, both large and small, and relates his story through photographs, journal entries, and tales of adventure, while simultaneously addressing issues such as differences in culture, psychology, and labels. Literary and artistic sidekicks such as Aristotle, Dante, and Van Gogh join Peart and his cycling companions, reminding the reader that this is not just another travel book—it is a story of both external and introspective discovery and adventure.

            5 out of 5 stars A great story about a great adventure.......2007-08-26

I am always interested in good real life adventures. This story is about Neil's perspective on his adventure through a remote part of Africa that most westerns would never have the courage to try. I am personally a person that has traveled most places of the world, including Africa, but exposing myself to the elements the way Neil and his other five cycling buddies did is something I wouldn't dream of doing..... or at least until I had read this book... which makes me now believe I have been missing an entire part of my traveling adventure.

Pick this book up! You will enjoy it! I enjoy Neil's honesty about his traveling companions and the people he interacts with during the trip. A great story about a great adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A Masked Reader rates The Masked Rider.......2007-08-10

My purpose in picking up this book was simple. I recently renewed my lifelong love affair of that wonderfully efficient and simlplistic machine, the bike, and wanted a book to get some info on a good bike to buy and techie tips/advice from a 'name I can trust' (given that I'd read a few of Neil Peart's books and enjoyed the music of the band he plays for.)

What I found was an unassuming gem. To give a brief background, I found some of Peart's other books (Ghost Rider & Roadshow) 'tough' reads. That is to say, they were informative, and certainly engrossing, but they chronicalled arduous times and tasks. Ghost Rider was painful at a similarly bad time for me and no matter how much I enjoyed being the reader and riding 'shotgun' the experience did not alleviate my own pain vicariously. At the risk of sounding like a self help guru, I think everyone has to experience and learn to heal in their own way. Or as Forrest Gump said, "that's all I have to say about that ..."

Roadshow is a tough read as a Rush fan. It is one of those delightfully entertaining books that i want to read in a single day, but with that reading comes the price of knowing the other side of the velvet rope, and a casualty of that knowledge is the innocence of a lifelong fan. It is also an education that makes a true fan of a casual one, and an appreciative one at that. Perhaps it is not so much an appreciation, as it is an acknowledgement of all of the 'other stuff' that comes along with the exhibition of an art form. Aw heck, lets forget acknowledgement, and call it an acceptance. Peart discloses his intimate feelings as a visceral reaction to the most unnatural act of shuttling from one locale to another while trying to discern the handful of extremist worshippers amid the seas of respectful fans. The breakneck pace of the tour made this a hard read as a fan, who if he had it his way would invite the guys to 'his' little corner of the world, show the guys around 'his' hometown, and make sure they had a homecooked meal and sit on the porch and listen to crickets. Yeah right .. that would make an exciting book entry - huh! It was funny to see Peart caught up in the coatails of the whirlwind of a tour and scurring from one national park to another as a diversionary quest on the tour - sometimes only stopping long enough to get an admission stamp at the ranger's office and high tail it out. I felt bad for the guy, really! But the journey's the thing here. So in that light it was tiring as a reader, but a good kind of tired. I feel for ya, buddy!

So much for a short background, but that's history for you. There's always more behind you than you think. Or at least I'd like to think there's more ahead than behind. But unlike this review, life is short so let me get to the point, eh?

As I said a lifetime ago, I picked up Masked Rider with the intent to hopefully glean some equipment, riding and otherwise technical tips from a respected writer and musician. Sort of like going to your plumber to get tips on your car or something, but to me its about people, I trusted Peart as a writer. As it turns out there was little if any of what I had hoped for in the book, but on the bright side there was a whole lot of 'other stuff' that I really liked. Which brings us to the here and now.
            Where are we? Oh yeah...

I loved this book. The 'mask' is a metaphor that Peart used to describe the roles or facades that we use to find our comfort zones, hide behind or avoid conflict. Those masks obfuscate, inveigle and deceive and often the wearer is the bearer of those consequences. Like the old twilight zone episode, the people become the masks and vice versa.

This book is really interesting in that the setting is a country of what one perceives to be differing norms, beliefs, customs, languages, infrastructure, commerce and countless other nuances that can make or break one's illusion of a good day. Of course, humility, patience, endurance amid diareah, thirst, conflict & corruption make for a good read especially from the comfort of home.

The traditional use of tribal masks among African cultures is certainly well documented in the western world, but here we find 5 North American travelers on the other side of the world wearing their own masks.

The beauty of the country , the people - especially the kids or the people saying welcome, or the old timer taking a nap in the woods
made me feel like the world is my home. Africa was always my dream destination as a kid. I will remember these images.

This book was a handbook on group dynamics, human behaviour, cultural sensitivity, communication, tolerance and compassion among others. The really interesting thing is that I am talking about the interractions of five North Americans among themselves - not with Africans. Peart delves into what makes people tick (including himself) and it is thoroughly enjoyable. It is also informative and offers practical lessons going forward. (People are all nuts!) Having been there, I found myself laughing out loud when Peart was still pissed off at the others and unable to sleep after discovering basic fundamental differences in beliefs and rationales during a conversation with the group. Still we try ....

Peart seems to make the observation as he makes his journey that, people - can't live with them and can't live without em. As I like to say
"Your damned if you do and damned if you don't - I'll be damned."
In other words, I'd rather be damned without regrets so If I am really waivering on a decision I'll usually err on the side of the affirmative and learn if nothing else. I am glad I read this book. <-(gratuitous affirmation)...

            Thank you.

PS. The book didn't have any gear tips, but it was good to read at night on the early days of getting back into riding (with sore legs). Lots of empathy. Now I ride whenever I get the chance and I remember that Peart described one of the best things about cycling is that is done at "people speed".

            5 out of 5 stars A ride with Neil.......2007-06-12

What a rush! Ok...sorry for the pun. Mr. Peart surprised me with his eloquent writing style and description of his journey. I could almost taste the grit and feel every bump he encountered along the way. Mr. Peart was able to convey adroitly the incredible poverty these people in Cameroon live with on a daily basis. I liked his insight into the young people there when he said something to the effect of how they wanted things 'given' to them rather than to 'earn them'. His expereinces with local govenrment officials and soldiers were quite interesting. He seemed to handle it all with a good sense of humor and an appropriate amount of respect for the customs and values of the country he was a guest of. It is refreshing to read a book by a well known musician without them tooting their own horn regarding their profession or politics. Mr. Peart comes across as some one you could sit down and have a nice cold one with and never know what he did for a living.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Lucid.......2007-03-24

I came upon Neil Peart's writing after watching a video my drummer had lent me ("A Work In Progress"). I had been so impressed with Neil's clarity, vision, and humility in the video, that I looked him up on the web to see what else I might find. On his web site I found some essays that he has written and was further impressed with his writing style. It was honest, open, intelligent, and conversational. I also noticed that he has written four books, three of them featuring bicycling or motorcycling. As a bicyclist, motorcyclist, musician, and writer myself, I had to dig in. I began with his first book, and was not disappointed.

I loved the style AND content of this book (not an everyday occurrence for me). Neil uses the writer's "show, don't tell" adage well, painting a picture of his bike tour that helps you to feel the heat, taste the dust, hear the blaring late-night music, and smell the sweat and sewage. In the midst of this, he relates his observations and thoughts clearly and honestly -- he doesn't sugar-coat his prose, rather he reveals what he experiences in all its warted glory.

There are two things I might change with this book to make it near-perfect: 1. More photos. There is much discussion in the book of the perils of photo-taking in Cameroon, and the fact that Neil was willing to take risks for the sake of some of these photos adds a sort of value to them for the reader. 2. I felt the book ended abruptly. I would love to have had more of a summary of his thoughts after the ride, a sort of Campbellian return of the hero and teaching of the lessons learned.

Perhaps a good implicit summary of my opinion on the book is the fact that I am already reading his next book, plan to read his others, and hope that he keeps on writing.

            5 out of 5 stars Worth a second read.......2006-08-07

I first read The Masked Rider on the plane that took me to South Korea, where I was going to live, working as a university professor. Neil's book warned me about Eastern-style toilets, locals staring, and children shouting -- though instead of "white man" it was "American".

Now, after re-reading it 8 years later, I find that The Masked Rider is just as fun the second time around. Neil is starkly honest in his observations -- about his fellow riders, his experience with the locals (and their prejudices and politics), and himself. His descriptions wander from day-to-day grind to vivid scenic descriptions that create a picture in the mind's eye. His style is conversational, and his "voice" as a writer comes through loud and clear.

I highly recommend this book to those who have wandered the world and enjoy getting another's take on travels, or those who are interested in taking a glimpse into West Africa... seasoned with philosophical musings of the Professor.

                    Book Description

"Before God was a pale, thin man, people worshiped a robust, bountiful woman. This is the Venus of Willendorf." So says Myrtle's friend Margie at the beginning of this novel for young adult girls. Margie advocates self-affirmation and believes that "bountiful" women are to be celebrated, that each woman is to embrace the goddess within her. But Myrtle rejects Margie's friendship after an embarrassing moment and regards Margie as a "kook." Throughout the book, Myrtle struggles with prescribed notions of beauty. An obese girl fighting a compulsive eating disorder, she is self-destructive and shunned by her peers. In college, her roommate, Jada, tries to draw her into a world of cosmetics and thinness, but Myrtle senses that Jada's way is not her own. She sets about discovering her own path through artistic expression and is eventually drawn back to the beginning of the story and to Margie as she gains insight about her own beauty. In the end, she is a successful artist on the brink of self-discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrating the Beauty in All Women.......2006-03-13

Myrtle of Willendorf celebrates the diva in all women. Not everyone is a size 4. Big women can be beautiful. Over weight women have sensual sides to them just like thin women. I think the book does a nice job of letting its readers know that being comfortable in your skin is the best gift you can give yourself. Myrtle is herself. She has talents. She has feelings. She is more than the sum of her girth.

                    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2002-05-19

I couldn't put this book down! It is a very short book, so not being able to tear myself away wasn't a problem. It was just a really intense, really enjoyable reading afternoon. There is something about the main character - Myrtle - that made me want to keep reading. Her story (told in first person) is about how as an art student in college, she has an obnoxious roommate who is always trying to make Myrtle into something she's not. Myrtle misses her old best friend from high school, but they had a big fight thier senior year because they were accused of being lesbians. Meanwhile, some mysterious unexplained happenings make Myrtle think of her old friend and the mystical, magical things her friend taught her. It is all told in a funny, ironic way with lots of priceless details. For instance, Myrtle hangs out at a coffee shop that has a Dr. Seuss theme, and the owner of the coffee shop dispenses wise advice.
I LOVED this book, and even though I read it in one afternoon months ago, I still think about it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Deftly Constructed Miniature.......2001-07-26

Myrtle is a beautifully drawn character study of a young woman struggling to find an identity despite the best efforts of her "friends" and her own low self image to influence her thinking. Myrtle's use of food to attempt to fill her emotional hunger is especially telling, as many women in similar situations can attest. Not a big book, but a painfully real one. A mature book for a mature teen or young adult who has similar concerns about weight, sexuality and love.

5 out of 5 stars Butter Melting in a Muffin.......2001-07-07

This slim book is full of funny remarks and delicious food descriptions, but it was the butter melting in a "Hop on Poppyseed" muffin that did it for me. Myrtle, the main character, loves to eat, and she spends a lot of time at her friend Sam's restaurant. He serves up all kinds of comfort food (with Dr. Seuss themes) at the same time he serves up warm friendship and emotional support. She can use the emotional support, too. Her roommate and the roommate's boyfriend are making life miserable for Myrtle with their inappropriate sexual activity. She's also dealing with the pain of a broken friendship from years before. She deals with all this with her sarcastic sense of humor, her artisitc ability, and lots of comfort food. Good, funny story.

                    2 out of 5 stars Unfortunate caricature.......2001-04-26

This book is far from horrible, and it does (however vaguely) make the point that fat people should be allowed to love and accept themselves as they are, however Myrtle's character is depicted as such a stereotypical caricature that much of the potentially positive message is lost. Myrtle is sloppy often to the point of being disgusting, and eats voraciously and obsessively; there is even a reference to her throwing her bloated stomach "over her shoulder" when it gets in her way. These comments are ugly and unnecessary, and turn Myrtle into a grotesque oddity. Overall, for a quick read (I finished it in a couple of hours) this book is bearable, but there are far better (and more positive) novels dealing with weight issues out there... I recommend Venise Berry's "All of Me."

This book had some good points, but in a whole it was pretty boring. It did not have the secrets I was looking for. I wanted the real insite. This book took me through a roll palying game with a man and wife. There situation was not similiar to mine, so it made it hard to read. Not bad for the price, but I bet there is better.

5 out of 5 stars A Must to anyone who wants to buy a car or truck...........1999-01-13

"The Car Buyers Art" will, from start to finish, guide you on exactly how to get the car you want for the price you want to pay. An absolute must for those who want to save money when buying a new or used car from any dealership in the market. This book will more than pay for itself in tips and methods when it comes to buying your next car.

A little background study with this book is a wise investment. What I like best is how this book presents the "other side" and takes you inside the mindset of the salesman: the deal from the seller's perspective. The author reveals certain "trade secrets" and explains why the wife, and not the husband, is the most feared element by the salesman. He also tells why shopping and buying on separate days is vital. Discover why you should take a friend along. Great chapters called "Do's, Don'ts" and "The 36 Most Asked Questions." Having the knowledge in this book could save you thousands of dollars!

                          Book Description

In this book a group of distinguished authors explodes the defeatist myth that ‘there is no alternative’ to corporate sponsored globalization. Theoreticians and activists from feminist, environmental, anti-imperialist and anti-racist struggles across five continents report on existing community-based initiatives, and demonstrate how we can all defy the creed of corporate globalization.

Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Maria Mies and her colleagues, which culminates in the elaboration of the ‘subsistence perspective’, the book is in three parts, dealing first with the theory of subsistence, then considering globalization as colonization and finally reporting on concrete cases of resistance to globalization in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Pacific. The subsistence perspective emerges as a fertile matrix for creative thinking and action to reclaim our labour, our communities, our environment, our bodies and our lives.

Anyone who refuses to believe that corporate globalization is our inevitable destiny will find this book a solid basis for formulating ideas and implementing strategies for the creation of a future in the image and the interest of the world’s peoples.

2 out of 5 stars Round up the usual suspects.......2004-06-22

Ah,yes. It's all the fault of those nasty patriarchal corporations (again). And the solution is so obvious! Live like a third-world peasant! I love it when first-world academics who enjoy all of the priveledges of high technology (medicine, air travel, food surpluses) advise others to live at the subsistence level. How terribly condescending to all of the REAL third-world peasants who desperately want to escape the subsistence-level life...the ones who vote with their feet by immigrating in hordes to first world, hi-tech capitalist countries. If the authors weren't so deadly serious, this book could be mistaken for a satire.

3 out of 5 stars Corporations are PEOPLE.......2003-01-02

I didn't read this book. I don't intend to do so. The point of the book is pretty clear from the title.

Obviously, I can't do a point-by-point refutation of the work but I can make a couple of points just based on what I see in the reviews and such.

That is, when you attack Corporations, you are attacking PEOPLE. Yes, a corporation is a legal seperate entity but, in practice, it is not just a grouping of random pieces of paper, a corporation is made of people. Corporations are groups of individuals working together. They can be everything from a micro-corporations based on good ideas thought up by two enterprising women in Africa to Cisco Systems, which employs about 30,000 people around the world and is of primary importance to this life-enhancing and extending technology we call the Internet.

Also, this book obviously advocates for people living like animals on the land. That is what "Subsistence" refers to, after all. That is sick. If one is truly a humanist, than they should be advocating for enhancing and extending the lives of people around the globe.

As far as the environment goes...guess what, there is a corporation that is about to put all the oil companies out of business. In ten years, oil will be a lubricant and very little more. Then, where are you environmental complaints going to be directed? Remember its a CORPORATION that is going to do this.

5 out of 5 stars It Changed my whole view of the world.......2002-04-27

I've always wondered why there is such an imbalance of wealth in the world and why environmental destruction continues despite our knowledge of its eventual consequences. I've wondered why there are so many wars in the third world and why Americans continue living in luxury while other parts of the world are dying of hunger.

This book shows a completely different perspective of the world and points to corporations as the cause of most of the world's problems. This book shows how people all over the world are defying the present corporate economic system in order to give control of the land back to the people and take the power away from corporations.

well, I was unfamiliar with most of the ideas presented in this book, reading it was a life changing experience.

I would highly recommend the book to anyone unfamiliar with the subsistence world perspective.

5 out of 5 stars excellent analysis of globalisation and the alternatives.......2002-03-11

"There is an alternative" gives and excellent analysis of globalisation from an ecofeminist/anti-colonial perspective. Most of the contributors have been influenced or inspired by the work of Maria Mies and the subsistence perspective that she and her colleagues have articulated. While there are so many analyses of globalisation these days, the ecofeminist perspective yields numerous new insights. For example, see Claudia von Werlhof's essay "Losing Faith in Progress: Capitalist Patriarchy as an 'Alchemical System'".

More importantly this book clearly demonstrates alternatives to globalisation that exist and avoids merely theorising. This is not surprising given that many of the contributors are leading activist-intellectuals such as Maria Mies, Vandana Shiva and Helena Norberg-Hodge. This book is essential reading to both understand the process of globalisation and to learn more about some of the alternatives that are already in practice.

                            Book Description

With the highest growth rate, the highest savings rate, and the highest level of productivity increases in the industrialized world, Japan exerts significant influence on worldwide economic events and activities. This volume, written from the perspective of an international economist, presents an objective, analytical look at the global market connections of the Japanese economy. The author examines such issues as Japanese export and import patterns, trade barriers facing Japanese exports and imports, the changing productive capacity of Japan, and foreign investment in and by Japan in order to offer a clearer picture of Japan's role in the world economy. The impact of Japanese developments in such areas as technology, trade policy, and finance on the United States and other key international markets and the effects in Japan of global developments in these areas also receive thorough coverage. Turner argues that the key to Japan's strength as an international economic power lies in what he terms dynamic efficiency--Japan's ability to make effective use of its internal domestic resources to leverage itself into the global marketplace. In fact, Turner asserts, much of Japan's success derives from its ability to apply the concepts and strategies that enabled the country to rebuild its economy during the postwar era to its current business dealings worldwide. Each chapter describes and analyzes a particular aspect of the Japanese economy; the issues addressed range from global trade and investment to macroeconomic effects of Japan on the global economy to Japan's relationship with less developed countries. An ideal supplemental text for courses in international business, the book will also be an invaluable resource for investors and business executives with dealings in Japan.
