Fun with food.......2000-05-01

What are the major plants and animals on which humans subsist? Where do these plants and animals come from? This book addresses these and other questions related to food. It does so in a highly readable format, assuming no prior botanical or zoological knowledge. It organizes the discussion along chapter topics such as "Grasses: The staff of live." Learn that yams have served as a source of steroid hormones, that sugar is a grass from the South Pacific and observe how cauliflower, kale and brussels sprouts all derive from a single plant species. On the down side, this book's treatment of genetic engineering is outdated and the faith given to improvements in crop production not well reconciled with a concluding chapter on food problems, e.g. pesticide use. But these weaknesses are outweighed to the reader seeking a concise, interesting overview of the foods on which we subsist.

A must-read classic on the big bang........1998-11-06

Halton Arp is the last of the creative thinkers in astronomy today. Being an astronomer, he is always careful to provide his readers with facts to back up his conclusions. This is another good, informative book.

Like my title says, I wish there is a two and a half star rating. I have read better skating books than this one, such as " Figure Skating For Dummies" and "The Essential Figure Skater". This book is too vague in some parts of the book and too much information in the other parts. Not a very good guide to figure skating. The beautiful pictures of famous figure skaters are the best parts of this book.

This book is only 128pgs and covered to much with to little info. With everything covered this book needed to be at least 300pgs. Over all worth reading.

Excellent book for illustrating skating moves!.......2001-05-27

This book provides step by step illustrations of a range of skating moves from beginners to advance. The placement of the foot patterns is easy to see with arrows to show direction. As a level one freestyle figure skater, I find that the book is missing directions on beginning movements, warmups, and preparation for jumps and spins.Advanced skaters find this book extremely helpful in learning to perform double and triple rotations in jumps and various spins. Written instructions are provided to assist skaters at all levels.

Owen's family stayed in a beach house for twelve years and now construction workers want to tear it down and build a hotel in the house's place and Owen won't stand for it. Owen hid in the beach house in mid fall and survived on $10.00 a lighter and some friends from a department store. And Owen has to convince the landowner to stop the construction and keep the beach house for future use. Miss Devlin (The landowner) isn't convinced and she thinks the hotel is a better investment. Some older kids started a fight and Owen got badly hurt. (He felt that in the morning)!!!

If you like realistic fiction with a twist of madness you'll love this book and I think Avi has made a good decision in making the novel A Place called ugly. I would recommend this book to anyone. Will Owen save his summer rental house? Find out in this great novel by Avi! On a scale of 1-5 I would rate this book **** 4 stars for best creativity. This book is great for any age. Enjoy!

The Unfitting Title.......2004-11-01

Regardless of the unappealing title, A Place Called Ugly written by Avi can be measured as one of the best books I have read. Since my summer assignment was to read during the summer, I decided to read this book. It made my summer more luxurious.
Depending if you like realistic fiction this book may be a book for you. THis book has many points which prove that this book can be considered as realistic fiction. Pip who is the main character, is an average boy who lives with his sister and her husband. Avi's description, though, is so flamboyant that they are visible ro all your senses; for example when Avi is explaining his sister's cooking, it is detectable to the eye to the smell, to the visiooon, and we are very close to tasting it. From the moment that I opened the book until when I closed the book felt like five minutes, because teh book was so attractive, and interesting. I read the book, like I eat ice-cream. The words are particles that make up the flavors, and the events are my desired flavors. Campared to Avi's writing, and other author's writings, I think that Avi has a unique way of seducing the reader. That's what I like most about Avi's books.

Best advice on home buying.......2000-04-04

No one should buy a home without reading this book first! It is a gem--packed with useful information in a very readable format. The author uses his knowledge of the real estate business and his own experiences as a professional to provide a valuable and thoughtful perspective on the whole process. I wish I'd read this book before my first foray into the world of home-buying, but even after several such ventures in my life, I still found I learned a lot by reading this book.

Buying a house would be a lot easier for all of us if we did it frequently. But most of us only buy a home a few times in our lives and, face it, the process is dauntingly complex. As with any complex field, real estate has developed its own technical vocabulary. Fortunately, this book is written in plain English, and makes few assumptions about its readers.

That being the case, it is an invaluable resource to potential home buyers, *especially* if the buyer is looking in the author's home state of Colorado.

The reader learns about the advantages of "buyer agents" and is walked step-by step, in plain English, through the maze involved in finding and purchasing just the right home. Numerous anecdotal "horror stories" illustrate the potential pitfalls in the buying process.

I know *I* will be able to make better decisions on my next house purchase after having read this book.
