Impact of diversity on organizational culture.......1998-09-03

Hopkins' discussion of the ethical dimensions of diversity is both timely and relevant and his process model of the ethics-diversity relationship provides a framework from which ethicists, OD practicioners and organizations who are addressing a changing work environment and workforce can begin a dialogue. He rightly recognizes and frames in intellectual terms, the dilemma with which this reviewer agrees. Today's organizations, as organizations have always been, are comfortable with the way in which power is distributed and maintained in that distribution. What Hopkins verbalizes, I believe helpfully, is the fear that I have heard expressed (or suppressed) in my discussions with managers, that is, that diversity will result in the chaotic introduction of mores and values that may not be consistent with those held in place by the status quo and, likely, most reflective of dominant views.

The importance of opening a dialogue to identify, examine and evaluate the presence and application of ethical standards in organizations and the possible entrance of new mores and values represented by diversity is high.

His process model of the ethics-diversity relationship offers a framework for initiating this dialogue. His references to other sources, such as his re-presentation of congruency and national culture clusters is a helpful resource for those uneducated about the distinctions. He also provides ten case studies by five scholars which could serve to generate healthy discussion among managers and those interested in the intersection of ethics and diversity.

The appreciation this reviewer has for Hopkins' introduction of the topic of the impact of diversity on the organizational culture is, however, overshadowed by her concern about his understanding of and presentation of many of the issues outside of the philosophical treatise on mores, ethics and culture. Hopkins' own prejudices and biases as well as his ignorance regarding distinctions between and among identity groups--such as ethnic cultural groups, sexual orientation identity groups, gender groups and legally-defined racial groups--and of classes protected by non-discrimination law were continously exposed in his discourse.

i thought this book was one of the best in the series. the story brought joey and pacey closer which was great, although it would have been better had they let that story develop a little more. The ony bad thing was that jack was in the book for about two seconds, either he should have had more lines or they should have left him out. But all in all this one is worth the read.

I liked this it had a good story line but the hole book seemed to be about joey. It is definatley worth reading if your a dawsons creek fan though. I would also definatley recomend major meltdown as i think thats the best in the series.

Out of all the Dawson's Creek books , this one is my favorite! I really liked the idea of everything! I'm glad she got closer to Pacey... cuz i like them together :)

I enjoyed this book because it focused a lot on Joey. She is my favorite character on Dawson's Creek. This book was spectacular. With Pacey in it, it added humor. Joey's dilemma was the plot of the book, and I could not put it down.

missing the Kevin Williamson touch.......1999-05-05

This attempt at a good Dawson's Creek story was achieved.It is certainly the best out of the books that are out there on the show.But all the books are missing the Kevin Williamson touch that only he can bring to the characters.And where was Andie's brother Jack.He only said about two things the whole story.

Aging in America imposes dramatic personal, social, and economic changes. Retirees have substantial power to affect both business and public policy decision making. This book analyzes the expenditure patterns of older households to characterize their comparative lifestyles and quality of life. Expenditure patterns of various elderly households are examined over time and compared with the non-elderly. Particular emphasis is placed on analysis of necessity and health care expenditures. The authors empirically test the dominant theories of consumer life-cycle behavior. They conclude that these theories do not provide a consistent explanation for the expenditures of heterogeneous age and income groups and that alternate theories--the precautionary theory of elderly savings or the theory of positional goods--have credence.

With the collapse of the Bretton Woods system, any pretense of a connection of the world's currencies to any real commodity has been abandoned. Yet since the 1980s, most central banks have abandoned money-growth targets as practical guidelines for monetary policy as well. How then can pure "fiat" currencies be managed so as to create confidence in the stability of national units of account?

Interest and Prices seeks to provide theoretical foundations for a rule-based approach to monetary policy suitable for a world of instant communications and ever more efficient financial markets. In such a world, effective monetary policy requires that central banks construct a conscious and articulate account of what they are doing. Michael Woodford reexamines the foundations of monetary economics, and shows how interest-rate policy can be used to achieve an inflation target in the absence of either commodity backing or control of a monetary aggregate.

The book further shows how the tools of modern macroeconomic theory can be used to design an optimal inflation-targeting regime--one that balances stabilization goals with the pursuit of price stability in a way that is grounded in an explicit welfare analysis, and that takes account of the "New Classical" critique of traditional policy evaluation exercises. It thus argues that rule-based policymaking need not mean adherence to a rigid framework unrelated to stabilization objectives for the sake of credibility, while at the same time showing the advantages of rule-based over purely discretionary policymaking.

It's monetary economics, not diff eqns.......2005-03-02

It's a most compehensive and thought-provoking treatise on modern monetary economics, an excellent follow-up to Carl Walsh's Monetary Theory and Policy. I think this reviewer who gives the book 2 stars just on account of one technical error that he claims to have discovered is being extremely myopic. The book is not about solutions to stochastic difference equations and neither does the author claim to be an expert at stochastic difference equations. The book handles what it is meant to handle admirably well, i.e. MONETARY ECONOMICS

Woodford's Incomplete Model.......2004-05-04

I have been spending the last four months concentrating on Woodford's model of a cashless economy, which Woodford presents in Chapter 2, and which provides the foundation for the rest of the book. I believe his model to be incomplete, relying on a rational expectations precedent of assuming bounded solutions when solving expectational difference equations. A colleague and I have written a paper that shows that this precedent is flawed and we then propose more rigorous procedures. When we apply those revised procedures to Woodford's model of a cashless economy, we find his model is incomplete.

Furthormore, I am writting a second paper that shows that the central bank in Woodford's model is unable to affect the nominal interest rate paid on loans by other entities. If the central bank cannot affect this interest rate, then it cannot affect prices even if Woodford's model was complete.

These are just challenges to Woodford's model which need to withstand the test of refereed journals. However, the potential reader of this book needs to be aware that there are some academics who are challenging the validity of his model. Very good book in Monetary Policy.......2004-04-21

For sure this will become a masterpiece in modern monetary policy. It is very well detailed, and discusses what is really important in the field.

It is already a reference book, and must be read by practitioners, students and academicians interested in the subject.

However the book has the following caveats:

- It is too verbose. That means that you might have the same deepness with less words. As a consequence the reader often gets tired, bored and misses the main point;
- It does not talk about conventional monetary policy as you could find in Walsh's "Monetary Theory and Policy";
- Trying to make the exposition easier, the models are presented in separeted too far apart pieces. This makes it difficult to fully grasp the details at once.

In view of this, I must say that Walsh's book might become a necessary complements to Woodford's. Notice that the styles and goals of both books are different. Therefore, buying one or another depends on your intentions.

In additon I'd say that Woodford's overall strategy is right in terms of the sequence of subjects treated. However, shorter and more numerous chapters might improve the exposition tactics.

must read text for students in monetary economics.......2004-01-15

This book is written by one of the giants in modern macroeconomics. Although a little bit lengthy, the book contains nearly all the recent advance in monetary economics, especially in the interest rate rules and optimal monetary policy. Of course, you should be familiar with log linearization and simple matrix algebra in order to access the mathematics of the book. Woodford¡¦s Interest and prices and Walsh¡¦s Monetary Theory and Policy (2nd edition) would definitely become the required text for every graduate course in monetary economics around the world.
