Book Description
Astronomy, the oldest of the sciences, has a history which goes back thousands of years. Civilizations throughout the world recorded events which they observed, including eclipses of the sun and moon, and the behaviour of meteors, comets and stars. These observations contain a wealth of information which is of great importance and interest to the modern day astronomer. A Chronicle of Pre-Telescopic Astronomy presents a chronological record of all types of account of astronomical discoveries and events from all nations, from the earliest times to the year AD 1609, the year in which the telescope was first used. As such, it provides a unique history of mankinds changing view of the Universe. Useful biographies of the major figures are given, including details of the conflicts and rivalries between astronomers, and between astronomers and the authorities. A Chronicle of Pre-Telescopic Astronomy will be of great value to all modern day astronomers. Amateur astronomers and all those interested in the history of astronomy will also find it a fascinating source of information. The index of some 1000 names, together with an extensive subject index, make this an especially accessible and valuable work. The referencing of every entry in the work facilitates further investigation of the literature, making A Chronicle of Pre-Telescopic Astronomy an absorbing and enduring reference source.

Great.......2005-09-12
Good luck trying to put this down, Kennedy has a great insight into the specifics of the game. Great book for experts or just for starters, all can gain from reading.
Thanks!.......2005-09-08
I have been around baseball in one form or another almost all my life. I have always loved the game and I still do. I just have a better understanding of it now thanks to Kevin Kennedy!
The stories make you realize that it is not all glitter and gold for those guys. I have a better appreciation for all of baseball; the players, the managers, the owners.
I have watched you on FOX and listened to you on XM radio, and I am always astounded by your knowledge and insight. I am glad to be able to have it in writing.
Love the Stories.......2005-08-18
Twice Around the Bases is a fine baseball book, one that really kept my interest because of the variety of topics that Kevin Kennedy discusses. I loved the stories about his days playing and managing in the Latin American winter leagues, as well as reading about the various ways players and teams have always tried to get the "edge." The chapter on scouting was a real eye-opener. I also enjoyed reading about his approach to managing, working a game, and the kind of schedule managers have to keep. This is the kind of book you can open almost anywhere and find something you didn't know about the game. I'd recommend it to all baseball fans.
Dear Thinking Man: Save Your Money!.......2005-08-18
I am writing this to help you SAVE MONEY! I hate to write this critical review because Kennedy seems like a nice guy, but saying that this tome is a "thinking man's" book is like saying that Green Eggs & Ham is Shakespeare.
I am a big baseball fan and former player. I have been at games Kennedy has managed and have heard his schtick on ESPN. I bought this book for 2 reasons: 1. the idea of a "thinking man's book" on baseball appeals to me, and 2. the reviews on this site were glowing.
As with most sports books these days, the stories are ghostwritten transcripts of the "author" speaking to a tape recorder. No effort has been made to improve the grammar to even a basic level of "writing quality." The tenses are frequently confused. No one involved in this book knows the difference between an adjective and an adverb. I can forgive this on TV, but if you are writing a book, you HAVE to do better than this!
My above critism may seem picky, but if it does, you obviously haven't tried to read this thing. The poor grammar does not make the book warm & comfy, but instead, sloppy & confusing.
The stories in the first half of the book are common ones. The second half is dedicated to the "best players that he has ever seen." This contains only super-obvious players with almost no insight at all. It is sad and full of empty promises for anyone with enough baseball acumen to even think of cracking open this book.
Kennedy makes plenty on ESPN, so why does he subject himself to such ridicule for a few more dollars that he really doesn't need anyway? If you still want this book, you can have mine. If you still want to buy an "inside look" baseball book, buy Jim Bouton's "Ball Four" and get ready to read it over and over.
Baseball At Its Best.......2005-08-17
I have always enjoyed listening to Kevin Kennedy on radio and TV, and Twice Around the Bases just confirms that he is one of the most astute baseball men around. The book is filled with interesting information that both new and older fans will enjoy. Kevin really does cover all the bases here. It isn't every day that you read about the continued need for good scouts and top instructors at the minor league level, or the advantage of a manager using speed and motion, sometimes a forgotten commodity in today's game. That just scratches the surface. The book is filled with a ton of great anecdotes and stories about players Kevin has known and seen. He also takes a very strong stand on the steroid situation. With Kevin, it's all about the integrity of the game and by reading his book, you'll not only realize how much he knows about baseball, but how much he loves the game, as well. I would recommend this one to all real baseball fans. There's something for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing like it.......2006-10-22
This is simply the most comprehensive complilation of data for the Christian writer endorsed by author's, publishers and agents.
Sally's book.......2006-07-16
I attended a Christian Writer's Conference two years ago, a dizzying initiation into the subculture that produces much of the written material that American (at least) Christians read.
There I heard reverential references to Sally Stuart's annual publication and dutifully picked up my copy at the bookstand.
It truly is a marvelous reference work, published annually in order to track the rapid changes in the industry. Major sections include resources for writers (you never knew there were so many), topical/subject and alphabetical listings of book publishers, similar listings for periodicals and specialty markets, and a section on helps for writers. The latter includes an extensive list of literary agents who will pitch (after perhaps rejecting or reshaping) your work to the right publisher.
Sally's book is what it is: an indispensible gathering in one place of the data you need to get published in this sector. If this is your desire, you'll want to make sure you pick up your copy annually.
Christian Writer's Market Guide 2006.......2006-07-04
I needed this book for the locations of publishers and agents, it is a great tool.
Everything there is to know about the business.......2006-04-19
The first time writer faces a whole series of problems in even getting some to take them seriously. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to a publisher and tell them that you were writing this seven volume series about a boy going to Wizzard's school.
The key is to find a publisher that likes what you do. And that is basically a numbers game -- contact enough people and you will find one that likes what you write. This book is basically a list of people to contact. It covers not only the publishers (book and periodical) but also such things as writing groups, promotional contacts (book reviewers, publicists, writers conferences, agents) -- in short everything there is to know about the writing business with an emphasis on the Christian marketplace.
This book comes out every year, so you get up to date names, e-mail and physical addresses and of course the new publications that may not have a stable of writers.
A Crucial Reference Book for Every Christian Writer.......2006-04-12
Whether you dream of writing magazine articles or books for the Christian marketplace, you need this book on your shelf.
The key is beyond having it in your possession. Study the book and use the many tools built into the pages from marketing guru Sally E. Stuart. Every writer can benefit from her many years of expertise tracking the Christian marketplace.
Every aspect of publishing is constantly changing, Sally gives you the latest scoop in this solid reference book. Don't be caught using out-of-date information. How are you caught? When you submit to an editor who is long gone from a publishing house or a magazine. The annual edition of this book will serve you well.

Book Description
Homa Hoodfar's richly detailed ethnography provides a rare glimpse into the daily life of Arab Muslim families. Focusing on the impact of economic liberalization policies from 1983 to 1993, she shows the crucial role of the household in survival strategies among low-income Egyptians. Hoodfar, an Iranian Muslim by birth, presents research that undermines many of the stereotypes associated with traditional Muslim women. Their apparent conservatism, she says, is based on rational calculation of the costs and benefits of working within formal and informal labor markets to secure household power. She posits that increasing adherence to Islam and taking up the veil on the part of women has been partially motivated by women's desire to protect and promote their interests both within and beyond households.
Customer Reviews:
REALLY Excellent Book But Different From What I Had Expected.......2003-07-20
I ordered this book expecting it to talk about marriage practices in Egypt. While it touched on this, in less (or different depth) than I had expected, I really did get a lot more than I bargained for.
This book is exceptional, in that it is written by an Islamic (Iranian) woman sociologist, who had lived in, and gotten her degree in England. While she had to study Egyptian Arabic to converse with the people, she lived with them, and was able to understand many more facets of their culture in a different way than a westerner would have, and she was also more accepted and trusted by them because she was a Muslim (and her knowledge of Islam was extensively tested by her subjects in her early months of research). Yet, she is unlike most Arab sociologists in that she is able to write this book for a WESTERN audience, although the book is aimed more toward professional anthropologist/sociologists than the general public, as evidenced by her extensive citations and discussions of research methods. But in spite of that, I as a general reader, never found the book boring. It was difficult to put down. I was particularly interested in this subject, as I had spend several months living in Egypt during the time the author was doing her research, and compared my experiences to the author's. Her experiences and information are so much more extensive and rich.
The book basically covers every facet of how poor men and women are able to "make it" and "get by," especially when the majority of them are forced to work outside of the formal sector. I am an American who has lived and worked in Morocco for 12 years; I found that her book more fully explained much of the behavior I see here in Morocco among the poorer classes, even though the economic conditions (especially level of government subsidies) are not the same. The book shows the behavior of the poor to be very LOGICAL and WORKABLE solutions to their problems, within the frameworks they have to work in.
The book covered pre-marriage negotiations extensively, REALLY explaining the THINKING behind these negotiations. Again, even having lived in Morocco for 12 years, and even having married into the society, these things were never clear to me before, as they really are now.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously trying to understand the THINKING of both men and women in Arabic cultures, and how that thinking, and the subsequent actions which follow from that thinking, is different from western cultures.
Lastly, this book presents a more POSITIVE view of Egyptians than I have EVER seen. Unfortunately, so many of the Egyptians that tourists, especially, come in contact with, tend to be such deceitful liars, leaving foreigners with a distasteful impression of all Egyptians. This book was really uplifting, positive, and refreshing, presenting so many honest, hard-working, caring people who constantly help each other out! I would have liked to meet many of these people myself. It really shows the Egyptians in a positive way.
Between Marriage and the Market.......2001-08-01
Continuing the excellent dissection of Cairene family life undertaken by several American-based scholars, Hoodfar focuses on poor women and how they cope with the tribulations of daily life. An anthropologist of Iranian origins teaching at Concordia University, the author spent a decade in Cairo doing research. She has much to show for her efforts. At base, she shows how much of a contract marriage is, and how this explains such patterns as the preference for husbands to be older than wives, the advantages of marrying within the family, a woman's need for parental approval of her husband, and the ridicule men face when they do housework ("men in the kitchen look like women").
Most striking, Hoodfar shows the way in which patterns are changing: how the Western ideal of a love marriage has an unsteady impact ("I married for love, but want my three daughters . . . to marry in the traditional arranged way"); the effect of waiting until later in life to marry; and the huge consequences of women being gainfully employed.
Hoodfar's perceptive study points to family life in Cairo becoming with time less Western, not more. For example, she finds that the immensely detailed marriage contracts now prevailing (which regulate everything from the wife's use of contraception to the number of meals with meat per week a husband can expect) "emerged only in the last few decades." This in turn suggests that, superficial signs of convergence to the contrary, the Middle East in its essence is not Westernizing.

Book Description
This book cuts through the daunting technicalities of one of the most important of the WTO (World Trade Organization) agreements, that dealing with Intellectual Property Rights (hitherto primarily the preserve of national patent legislation) and their treatment as internationally tradeable commodities. Professor Correa makes comprehensible the TRIPS Agreement and explains its main provisions.
He is particularly concerned to explore the Agreement's massive implications for developing countries. These relate to the future of local R & D, their access to advanced technology (here he focuses on information technologies -- computer software, multimedia products, integrated circuits and digital information), commercial exploitation of natural resources and possible welfare effects. Pressure is mounting on Third World governments to implement the Agreement through national legislation. Professor Correa indicates concrete options available to implement the provisions in a manner consistent with these countries' development objectives and public policy concerns.
This book is an essential introduction to TRIPS and provides elements to develop policies and laws on intellectual property from a developing country perspective.
