Interesting, if you are an economist or if you operate like Bill Clinton and base each decision on an opinion poll. Hurry, someone take this guy's graph program away.

Why didn't you tell me?.......2005-07-27

It would have been nice to know that this book had zero zip snot to do with power boats before I bought it. Also, I find the author's info a bit suspect when he says he talked to one owner of a 42 foot power boat who spent $13000.00 a month on maintenance alone and based his entire decision not to include anything but sail boats based on this one interview.

What the author does have is a love for bar and pie charts with a few actual graphs thrown in to break up the (intense) monotony. The problem is that none of them are in color so in some cases you have to try to differentiate between two shades of black. Had I picked this book up in a store I would have politely put it back on the shelf.

The information is way out of date. One referance states that people were waiting for GPS units to drop below $1000!!! And the same section talks about the growing number of people who were getting a VCR.

Useful, but becoming out of date........2004-06-16

I brought this book to assist me in choosing a design for a cruising yacht, and found much useful material.
However some of the material is now dated (1992?), and the surveys appear to have been restricted to the Intercoastal Waterway and near Caribean islands.
A modern update would be appreciated.

Excellent for equipment choices.......2003-11-23

A couple weeks ago I finished reading Charlie Wing's "The Liveaboard Report / A Boat Dweller's Guide to What Works and What Doesn't". In it he interviews 71 sail-boaters -- these are cruisers for the most part, and not your weekend-warrior racer types.

Anyway, the author provides pie charts and bar graphs of the responses for a gazillion questions a beginner might have. The premise was, what would he (CW) like to know before investing in various systems and goodies. What works so to speak, planned for improvements, along with what they would change if money were no object. I found it interesting. It also had a small section on budgeting/budgets.

One thing which struck me (and he) was that of those with refrigeration, those with engine driven systems were not happy. The problem (if memory serves me) is that folks aren't real pleased to run their engine for an hour a day to charge the system, and cruisers with other power sources for their units were more satisfied.

You know, I too have read those wonderful stats of the engine driven units... but I don't know that running an engine (wear and tear) for an hour a day is going to make me a happy cruiser. It's the 'little things' -- my budget will be limited, therefore it is critical that I learn as much as possible pre-purchase so my choices can be wiser, one hopes! ;)

You might consider the book... it opened my eyes. For instance, we read so much about SSBs and the like, but in the book, universally VHF was aboard -- and not so much the SSB. I'm going to take another look through my copy this evening (taking notes) and then upload it to my website.

"The Liveaboard Report" is worth a look, though I don't know if I'd want to keep it aboard. It's more a Guide for good decision-making rather than a book you'd need forever.

Much better than a generic ESL book........2007-09-27

I teach English to adult Latinos, and the generic ESL text (i.e., a book not designed for speakers of a specific foreign language) we were using earlier was just awful. My students really love using this book, and I can absolutely notice a marked improvement in their English. One caveat is that if you are an ESL tutor or teacher, you need to have a good knowledge of Spanish in order to make proper use of this text.

does not provide good pronounciation tips........2007-06-26

i was looking for a book for a spanish speaking friend that will teach the spanish speaker how to correctly pronounce English words. It's very difficult to do in a book because of the many dialect differences in spanish and because there are many English sounds that don't exist in spanish.

the "th" sound as in "the," or "three" (the spanish speaker from SPAIN or Cuba may be the few who may easily learn this because they tend to pronounce some of z's and s's like "th")

the "sh" sound as in "shoe," "radiation," "sugar," etc.

the letter "v" sound as in "vase" (in spanish, the "v" sound doesn't exist because it's identical to the letter "b." there's not a way to phonetically spell the english letter "v" in spanish without explaining that the "v" is "kind of like a smooth f"

The book doesnt teach the many different ways to pronounce each vowel in English (which is very important for a spanish speaker being that each spanish vowel has only one pronounciation). It doesn't emphasize the differences between:
a as in cap
a as in cape
e as in fed (the spanish "e")
e as in athlete (the spanish "i")
ee as in feed
i as in fit
i as in fight
o as in stop (the spanish "a")
o as in stove (the spanish "o")
o as in money
oo as in foot
oo as in spoon (the spanish "u")
u as in put
u as in puke

I would like to see a ESL program for spanish speakers that focuses on pronouncing as I have described.

I use this book with my Mexican boyfriend to better his SPOKEN English, and this book hits the nail right on the head. Although it's written by a "gringo", it is relatively free from grammar and translation mistakes. The style is good for the novice English learner and truly starts from one knowing NOTHING. The flow and progression of the book is more natural than some I have seen. We have finished the book twice and continue to use it for review and drills of vocabulary.

Hilariously funny detailed pictures and descriptive text!.......1998-11-27

This is a funny book about piggy pirates and Captain Porker's lost treasure map. The hilarious illustrations make this story one to read again and again. My class enjoyed the rich descriptive language Salmon uses.

Great Trying to Impress a Girl Book.......2005-03-02

This book is a great book. It is about when Rodney tries to impress a girl named Ivy. Rodney tries to impress her by signing up for the talent contest. Rodney is a Asian kid and everyone says Asians people can't rap. So he is going to prove to Ivy Asians kids can rap. But Ivy is dating the all-star running back named Lavell Tyler. Can Rodney impress Ivy enough to brake up with Lavell Tyler? You need to read this book and find out.
I liked this book because he tries so hard to become a rapper. And this book resembles life today. This is a great book. I say 4 out of 5 stars. It was well written. It was one of my favorite books.

A must read for the aspiring APA "rapper" and artist!!!!.......2001-06-08

There is something to be said for a book that succeeds in being widely circulated (in a near guerilla tactic-like fashion) among the young APA artist community as a "must read." With the ever-increasing popularity of hip-hop and spoken word among our nation's youth, Talent Night proves to be a book which introduces a positive, albeit for aspiring APA artists- somewhat ironic, perspective on the impact poetry and rhyme can have. Talent Night's failure in providing a more connected depiction of the aspiring APA artist, APA youth and hip hop is in actuality, a reaffirming indication of the complex, often peripheral and challenging position APA youth have growing in a hip hop, pop-culture, media induced generation. Okimoto adequately succeeds in synthesizing the numerous themes of acceptance, identity, adolescent love and ethnicity into a coherent, surprisingly intricate story. It's clear that the accolades that Talent Night has garnished with adults and young readers alike are not merely derived from the, "oh so touching story of a boy in search of acceptance, love and his calling," but more importantly, a deeper recognition and challenge for the reader and author alike to redefine the boundaries of race and art for the next generation. I am still trying to understand why the cover art was changed with the second edition. The new cover art looks like it should adorn a horrendous, "100 of the world's most beautiful love poems" anthology. The old cover art of the Asian boy, the main character, on stage with microphone in hand, distinguished it from the other books when I first picked it up. For a story that demands the acceptance of the young Asian Pacific American, it is disapponting not to see the Asian protaganist on the cover.

The Americanization of Puerto Rico's people and its political and legal institutions was pivotal to U.S. expansionism in the region. But the "Americanization" process was fraught with contradictions, provoking a nationalist uprising and an independence movement, and generating deep and enduring political divisions among Puerto Ricans. Puerto Rico has been a territorial possession of the United States for over one hundred years. As a strategic insular possession and guardian of the Panama Canal, a lucrative offshore investment site for U.S. multinational corporations, and a long-standing source of labor power, Puerto Rico has had an important role in American history since 1898.

This book provides a new and comprehensive interpretation of how the United States attempted to transform Puerto Rico from a neglected backwater of the Spanish empire into one of its key props in establishing hegemony in the western hemisphere.
