      Book Description

      Why should managers study psychology?

In a fascinating analysis of the great sociological and psychological thinkers--including Freud, Durkheim, Maslow, Skinner and Mead--this erudite yet unconventional text challenges the foundations of modern managerial thought.

Aimed at students in management, organisational behavior, managerial psychology and related subjects, and equally useful to practising managers, Personality and Performance is a critique of the popular view that if managers can understand their colleagues' personalities, they can manage them more effectively.

With skill and verve the authors carry us through an array of ideas to a 'purposive psychology', based on the principles of responsibility, freedom, and choice, that enables working people to gain insight into and mastery of themselves.

          Book Description

In addition to depleting nutrients necessary for healthy crops, soil erosion processes can affect the carbon balance of agroecosystems, and thus influence global warming.. While the magnitude and severity of soil erosion are well documented, fluxes of eroded carbon are rarely quantified. The most complete, nonpartisan source of information available today on this topic, Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics brings together a diverse group of papers and data from the perspectives of world-renowned sedimentologists, soil scientists, and agronomists to resolve whether soil erosion on carbon is a beneficial or destructive process. This book collects quantitative data on eroded carbon fluxes from the scale of the agricultural plot to that of large basins and oceans. It quantifies the magnitude of eroded carbon for different soil management practices as compared to normal carbon sequestration and discusses the fate of the eroded carbon and whether or not it is a source or sink for atmospheric CO2. Finally, the book offers data reflecting the impact of soil erosion on soil, water, and air quality. Other important topics include solubilization, the determination of mineralization rates, carbon transfer, and sediment deposition, as well as carbon dioxide emissions, global warming potential, and the implications of soil erosion on the global carbon cycle and carbon budget. Based on the first symposium of the international colloquium Land Uses, Erosion and Carbon Sequestration held in Montpellier, France, Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics provides data that links soil erosion to the global carbon cycle and elucidates the fate of eroded carbon at scales ranging from plot to watershed.

            Description:
Soil organic carbon (SOC) stock is an important component of the global carbon (C) cycle, which has the potential to influence global climate. In this paper we presented an overview of soil organic matter (SOM) models in the context of soil erosion and discussed basic processes driving erosion-induced SOC loss. Although the mechanism of this loss is poorly understood, erosion influences SOC in two ways: redistribution of C within the watershed or ecosystem, and loss of C to the atmosphere. Erosion disperses soil, altering its microbiological activity as well as water, air and nutrient regimes. This, along with sediment enrichment, has an impact on greenhouse gas emission from soil. For most of agricultural settings, field studies suggest that cultivation along with soil erosion are the primary reasons for SOC loss. Tracing the fate of eroded C is a challenging task. Modeling is the approach taken most often. In this paper we discuss approaches used in various SOC models to assess erosion-induced C loss from soil in agricultural ecosystems. An example with Century model applied to meadow and corn-soybean rotation under chisel-till demonstrated the model's ability to respond well to different erosion scenarios. It was estimated that at soil loss rate of 10 t ha^-^1 year^-^1 (value often considered a threshold for maintaining productivity) 19% of the total SOC loss would be attributed to erosion after 90 years of cultivation.

"It is up to the golf architect," writes Ben Crenshaw in his foreword to Tom Doak's fascinating discussion of course design, "to present us with a thinking contest as well as a physical one." Like a puppeteer willing to raise the curtain on the strings he pulls, Doak reveals reveals the secrets of how. The how, as it turns out, is the easy part. It's the demonic thinking behind the whys that makes this so engaging--and useful. Doak's explanation of the ways a good designer has to muck with golfers' minds is truly absorbing, and is the kind of information that better players can embrace and make work for them.

5 out of 5 stars The Amazing Mr. Doak.......2007-10-11

Tom Doak as author and golf course architect never fail to amaze. He's the best when it comes to the game of golf.

5 out of 5 stars The Anatomy of a Golf Course: This book will help your game.......2006-12-28

I recently purchased this book, and since doing so, I have seen my scores go down. As a recent college grad, I had a lot of time to play golf this summer, and this book, with Doak's insights into how courses are not only set up to penalize the player, but to help them, can assist you into understanding certain aspects of the wonderful game that we refer to as golf. The diagrams and drawings make it easy to understand what is being described in the pages, and he also does a good job by making the book readable for those with little to/no knowledge of the game of golf. If you enjoy golf, and you want to both understand the courses you play on and lower your scores, than this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as Any out there..........2006-06-05

Both this book and Tom Doak are as good as they come. The book is great as a primer for those who want to understand the places they go to whack the little white ball. Tom is simply one of the greatest course designers...ever. He hasn't produced a great number of highly ranked courses, yet. However, he certainly will given that he has the skill and his reputation is already giving him access to the best pieces of land to use as his canvas.

Having said that, this book also points out the inherent irony of books by golf coure architects. Every architect advocates a back to nature approach and claims to follow one. All disdain massive earth moving, excessive maintenance costs built in by the architect, unnatural contours and tricked up golf holes. Doak is no different in this mindset. The ironic part is that the poster child for "manufactured courses", Pete Dye also advocates this approach in Bury Me in a Pot Bunker. To make it all more confusing, Doak's first job in golf course construction was with Dye and he maintains a great reverance for the man and his work. To phrase the problem mathematically we have:

                Dye equals good.
                Natural equals good.
                therefore natural must equal dye.
The only problem is that natural most certainly does not equal Dye as Tooth of the Dog, The Ocean Course, The Stadium Course and a host of other Dye courses make perfectly clear.

I guess this conflict makes it clear that architects writing architecture books is a bit like authors writing their own reviews.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer.......2005-02-01

Architect Tom Doak expertly lays out the fundamentals of golf architecture for the layman. Any serious golfer should try to develop an understanding of the science and art of course design and construction. This book is not a substitute for reading the classics, but it is a great place to start -- a good first book. Doak, like all great architects, has his own opinions and is not afraid to share them, but at the same time does not unfairly denigrate the work of others with whom he might disagree. Many of Doak's important points are illustrated in clear, excellent drawings.

5 out of 5 stars An introduction that speaks to us all.......2004-09-19

Whether you are a casual weekend golfer, or an avid player tearing up the courses in your area on a regular basis, this volume could be called the user's manual for any of them.

Each section deals concisely with the many subjects surrounding golf architecture: schools of design, course routing, hazards, etc., but in such a way that not too much nor too little information is given on any one area. As the author is an arcitect himself, there are many places where he reveals his distaste for certain trends, or presents his views on certain subjects felt to be almost controversal. This adds to the readability of the book in the end, not only because it brings color and life to the discussion, but because it helps answer certain questions many of us have regarding not only the courses we play regularly, but those we only read about as well.

More than likely, the next step for a reader looking to get into golf course arcitecture will be to start studying landscaping, irrigation, and the other specifics of the disciplin. For the golfer, the next move will no doubt be towards books like the World Atlas of Golf in order to confirm for themselves why the great courses are indeed just that.

                          Book Description

This remarkable book draws its inspiration from what its authors describe as the post-modern epic now unfolding at the grassroots. It portrays the ways in which the world’s social majorities are now escaping from the monoculture of a single global civilization and regenerating their own cultural and natural spaces. In so doing, they are challenging the three sacred cows of modernity--the idea, entrenched in globalization, that there is only one, universally valid way of understanding social reality; the exclusive and general validity of Western-defined notions of human; and the notion of the self-sufficient individual, as opposed to people-in-community, which has grotesquely transformed how we see the human condition. This is quite simply, a book which will transform how one sees the world--North and South.

                          4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2006-11-02

A must read for individuals that want to understand the new social movements occurring within our times; the writers describe stylistically the rift that is widening on the issue of globalization in our world, and more specifically Mexico. The thesis is that the Zapatista movement is justified, but it goes beyond the normal rhetoric; this book is not meant to be taken as the only source of wisdom on the subject but it does help see beyond our economic goggles. An analysis based on sustainable development, cultural upheaval, and anti-globalization stance. For so long have viewed the world through the confined bifocals of economic language and hearsay, this book allows us to venture beyond certain overdrawn arguments and back to some more personal and basic arguments that we sometimes have forgotten the validity of. I haven't rated the book with five stars, for I believe its usage of language at times to be fairly abusive and pompous.

5 out of 5 stars An introduction to alternative thought on grassroots culture.......1999-05-11

Esteva and Prakash provide sources of alternative thought about what is important in and of the world. The book offers evidence of how grassroots cultures in non-western nations are combining people interests with environmental interests to assure a future for their cultures. The book gives support to the idea that technological development is not inevitable, but a choice that may be much easier for non-western nations to make. Additionally, the authors offer food for thought for rural sustainable community development in the U. S.

                              Book Description

To what extent should public services (for example public utilities such as telecommunications, energy, public transport and postal services) be subject to ordinary competition law? This question has assumed great importance in the context of the activities of European Union. On the one hand, it is argued (particularly in France) that competition law is a threat to the values of public services that underlie their distinctive objectives. On the other, the 'Anglo-Saxon' argument is that protecting public services from competition gives them an unfairly protected position and can mask their inefficiencies. This book examines the philosophical, political, economic, and social principles involved. Prosser contrasts the mainly economic and utilitarian justifications for the use of competition law with rights- and citizenship-based arguments for the special treatment of public services, and examines the varied conceptions of the differing traditions in the UK, France, and Italy. Prosser then considers the developing European law in this area. He examines decisions of the European Court of Justice, considers the development of the concept of 'services of general interest' by the Commission, and reviews the liberalization process in telecommunications, energy, and postal services. He also provides a detailed case-study of public service broadcasting. The book concludes by drawing general principles from the debates about the extent to which public services merit distinctive treatment and the extent to which competition law must be amended or limited to respect their distinctive roles.

This book presents startling evidence that state monopolies can produce better outcomes than the free market. It provides an empirical comparison of the property insurance market in five European countries: Britain, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany. The market and cost structures of
insurers in each country are described, and particular features of each market and the outcomes for customers examined. The regulatory frameworks vary widely from country to country and so do the market outcomes, both in terms of premium level and in terms of available insurance cover.

There are limits to business development and economic growth. With the help of modern production and information technologies, companies are coming ever closer to the limits of what can be achieved but ultimately nothing can be done in less than no time and at less than no cost. We now need to find areas of competitive advantage that have not yet been fully exploited. This book presents both the problems and the solutions in an accessible way for experts and non-experts alike.

                                      Book Description

How can Europe, the United States, and Japan stop the technological, trade, and financial war on which they have increasingly and wastefully embarked? How can they direct the development and uses of science and technology and the economy in the interests of the well-being of the 8 billion people who will inhabit the planet in 2010-2020? Limits to Competition boldly frames international political economy and globalization debates within the new overarching ideology of competition and offers a balancing voice.

The word compete originally meant "to seek together," but in our time it has taken on more adversarial connotations and has become a rallying cry of both firms and governments, often with devastating consequences. Limits to Competition explores the question of whether free-market competition can indeed deliver the full range of needs for sustainable development. Is competition the best instrument for coping with increasingly severe environmental, demographic, economic, and social problems at a global level?

This book provides a solution of how we can make every country equal off in the free trade competition world. The author gives the solution for this uneven competitive world by let's say creating the world government to efficiently decide how to consume limited resources.
The idea of the book makes sense but totally unrealistic and impracticable. Who will be the government?
Moreover, the book is very boring. The writing style is so horrible. In other words, I can present the same thing in about 10 pages (maximum). It is too wordy.
If you do not understand how each country in the world is unequal, you should buy this book. However, if you want to know how to make things better, this book just simply gives nothing to you.

                                        Book Description

The state is in retreat; markets and private ownership gain ground. But where is the borderline? The authors in this volume, mainly economists but not only, explore it. Part I deals with questions of social philosophy from various standpoints - libertarian, communitarist, economic-sociological and institutional. Part II deals with the frontiers of markets in such areas as legal services, health services, education and the arts. Part III tackles normative issues of global trade such as competition policy, trade in "bads" and social standards. The volume contains contributions by David M. Anderson, Bruce L. Benson, Peter J. Boettke, Anne O. Krueger and Chonira E. Aturupane, Deepak Lal, Gary B. Madison, Dennis C. Mueller, Mark V. Pauly, Alan Peacock, Stefan Voigt and Daniel Kiwit, Edwin G.West.

                                          Book Description

Hella Engerer analyzes the emergence, evolution, and theory of property rights and establishes the limits for privatization of state-owned enterprises in the transitional economies of Eastern Europe. She counters the assumption that reduction of the state sector helps to create the basis for a private property system, showing that privatization presupposes a stable framework for property. This is a major contribution to the understanding of the emerging economic order of Central and Eastern Europe.

(...)As Ana goes through one of the most amazing times in her stories. I liked this book, because it gave me a whole new idea on people, and how they can change. And how sometimes, things down go your way. A good saying for this book would be "When one door closes, another opens".

                                          5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2003-06-12

I loved this book. My favorite character is Ana Suarez and I thought that Ana was a real nice person. Ana did what she loved and even though Clarisse was mean to her she was still nice. For the people who have the generation dolls should know that it is kind of wierd reading the book with the generation girls in it. I just wish they were still out. I havn't read all the books though. But this was truly a good book. I loved it! I read it in a day. I got it at noon and finished at night. It's sort of like a short/long story.

I got this book yesterday and finished it this morning. I LOVED IT!!! I liked how Ana tried to stay tough at the track. Of course, I haven't read all the books though, so maybe next month I'll send another review saying I liked another book better.

This is a great book! It shows you that if you work hard YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.

Ana Saurez has been training for the triathlon for a year. She thinks everything is going pretty good until she realizes that Clarisse really doesn't like her... not at all. Then her ankle gets sprained... pure bad luck, she thinks. Until she sees Barbie's video tape of the race. Will she be able to run in the triathlon?

If you like this book read: DEAR AMERICA AND ROYAL DIARIES. They rock.

5 out of 5 stars First reviewer, not the first fan.......2000-10-18

When Generation Girl dolls were introduced in the spring of last year, I passed them up. Then, in the fall, these books came out and I was hooked on all things Gen Girl. This is a favorite for anybody into sports or who's feeling overwhelmed and like they can't overcome something in their lives. In this story, Ana Suarez meets a guy, gets pushed by a girl, sprains her ankle, breaks up with a guy, gets back with the guy, the same girl that pushed her becomes her personal coach, and Ana still goes on to compete in three Olympic sports. Whew! This girl is busy. But never too bust for her friends, Barbie Roberts, Blaine Gordon, Chelsie Peterson, Lara Morelli-Strauss, Nichelle Williams and Tori Burns. This is a book that always keeps you guessing and has a great, though somewhat predictable ending. Even though this says it's not for ages over 12, that is sooo untrue. It's a great weekend read for older girls, too. Don't feel embarrassed or even hesitate to try this book. It's not my personal favorite in the series but well worth a good look. So? What are you waiting for?
