                  Book Description

This completely revised and updated edition of YAC Protocols takes advantage of the many new advances in biology since the publication of the first edition, including the sequencing of the human genome, the genomes of a wide variety of other organisms, and the increased use of transgenic animals for understanding the molecular basis of human and animal disease. This volume also provides a much-needed update on the new techniques currently employed and to help redefine and illustrate the important roles still to be played by yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) technologies in the postgenomic age.
YAC Protocols, Second Edition, demonstrates the enormous potential use of YAC technologies in understanding the role of genetics in maintaining health, promoting pathogenesis, and conferring susceptibility to disease. Offering solutions to the many problems that have plagued researchers, this new edition allows for the wider and more efficient use of YAC technologies for the analysis of genetic and pathogenic causes of human disease.

                    Book Description

In YAC Protocols experienced researchers offer a comprehensive collection of their easily reproducible and proven methods for analyzing complex human, animal, and plant genomes. The step-by-step protocols cover all aspects of yeast artificial chromosomes, ranging from the construction of YAC libraries to their storage, screening, and database management, and to their use in such specialist applications as the transfer of YACs to mammalian cells and the isolation of coding sequences from YACs.

YAC Protocols allows workers to add promising approaches adapted from yeast genetics to their personal repertoires and to introduce novel techniques emerging from the accumulating experience with YACs as a tool for genome analysis. Its extensive notes and background information not only significantly enhance the effective use of the methods, but also provide a valuable hands-on resource for those wishing to adapt protocols to suit their own applications.

5 out of 5 stars Bass....... the ageless master.......2007-08-17

It's a "sign of the times" when a brilliant, worthwhile book like this only has a few reviews and imbecilic garbage like the Atkins Diet has over a thousand. Bass's books are not just for bodybuilders....especially the latter works. In this book and all his others, Bass lays out the simple realities of nutrition, muscle building and general fitness. The concepts are logical, relevant and when applied translate in to permanent changes for the better to one's body. I e-mailed Clarence and he said his latest book should be out in late 07. Like the others it will be worth ten times its weight in gold.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-03-21

One of the top 10 exercise/bodybuilding books ever wriiten. Easy to understand and with a wealth of information. The first 52 pages describe very simply how to eat succssfully for bodybuilding and life. A great book.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice.......2003-10-24

The main reason it didn't get five stars is because it billed as a general fitness book, but contains a reasonable amount of bodybuilder specific info. Also, lean for life, his other book, might be a better general buy. BUT Mr Bass gives a lot of good sound advice concerning diet and exercise that has helped me. Using his advice i've been able to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, which i didn't think was possible. I think that his plan is something i can follow for my life, not just a quick way to starve off twenty pounds. In the past i've had a very hard time building muscle but his prescription has helped. I think this book would improve the health of many people who instead yo-yo on fad diets of all kinds.

1 out of 5 stars Its not this easy.......2007-08-28

Why do you want to increase the size of your vocabulary? If you want just want to show off then this may be a book for you. However, if you want to be able to formulate your thoughts more precisely stay away from it. The method that the author proposes gives you a rough idea of the meaning of a word. That's it. After working through the book you may be able to say the same thing in six different ways, but you will not be able to tell the subtle differences in implication. That the author likewise lacks this level of sophistication becomes abundantly clear, e.g., when he claims that a palace and a castle are 'the same'. In order to really extend your vocabulary I would rather recommend to read book by Joyce, Hemmingway or Dickens -- they also make a more enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Ssimple yet powerful.......2007-08-23

I already had a copy of the book long back. I guess someone borrowed it and "forgot" to return it back. Really simple, yet packs a punch. Very effective too.

                    2 out of 5 stars Correction.......2007-07-30

The first section of the book tests your vocabulary by asking the correct definition for a group of words. One of the words is "atheist," which the author incorrectly defines as "a disbeliever in God." The "A" in atheist is a prefix for "without," and a theist is someone who believes in a god, or gods, that actively participate in the Universe. The definition should have read something like "a person without religion or belief in a god or gods."

Calling an Atheist a "disbeliever in God" is no different than calling a Christian a "disbeliever in Zeus" - it is utterly incorrect. The author's biased definition was enough to keep me from reading another word, and is the reason I've rated the book so low.

How ironic coming from a book about word "power."

5 out of 5 stars Very effective but at times very challenging and difficult book.......2007-06-10

As most other reviewers remarked, this book is probably the best and most efficient book to truely improve your vocabulary. The ideas and methologies in this book will benefit you for years to come. But be warned, this book is not for some leisurely reading, where you magically improve your vocabulary in a few weeks. I bought this book a couple of month ago and I'm just half way through, although I work on it almost every day. As the author mentions in the opening chapter, to really learn you have to have the desire to learn new things, new ideas, just like a child does. Only then will you be able to really improve. Only if you really have that desire will you be able to finish this book.

One of the great things about this book, is that each keyword is first described by an 'idea' behind the word. Meaning, you first get a paragraph of some habit/characteristic/attribute and once you think, "yes, I know exactly what you mean", only then will he present you with a single new word, which expresses exactly what that entire paragraph described. The next sections then work with those new words and dissect them and show you where they come from (either Latin or Greek) and other words build on the same root. You also have to write down exercises to work with those new words. The author also encourages the reader to read aloud so you really familiarize yourself with those new words. The pronunciation guide is also surprisingly effective.

If you're serious about building/improving your vocabulary, buy this book, you won't regret it. Absolutely worth 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves ten stars!!.......2007-04-13

I've tried several vocabulary building books and this book by Norman Lewis is the best. After reading this book, I never look at the words same way again. This book not only teach me how to approach unfamiliar words, but also arouse my desire to learn new words.

                                              Book Description

In the last decade the use of non-governmental agencies (NGOs) to promote development and reduce poverty and hunger has become a major feature of development policy. Donors have poured funds into NGOs, governments have allocated them major responsibilities and their number and size has grown. Has this popularity helped them to solve the problems of poverty or has it changed them so that they are now part of the 'development industry' that they used to criticize? This book provides the most detailed study available of the ways in which NGO-State-Donor relationships have changed the role that NGOs play in development. Its papers are introduced by two international experts on the topic and the contributors are leading academics and senior practitioners. The picture that emerges from the general reviews and detailed case studies of African, Asian and Latin American NGOs, is a complex one. However, the authors conclude that there is much evidence that NGOs are 'losing their roots' - getting closer to donors and governments and more distant to the poor and disempowered who they seek to assist.

                                                Book Description

Until now, the history of the Cold War has been written as a series of diplomatic and military events: the Berlin airlift, the Korean War, the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, and countless covert and rhetorical maneuvers. When communism finally collapsed in 1989, it was suddenly obvious that economics had played a major role in the war. But what role exactly? Did the West succeed simply by the hidden hand of its markets? Or did Western powers offer direct and successful economic leadership?

The answer is that our economic policy was key to the war, even more central and important than military might. Since World War II, in a world of democratic powers and peripheral combat, economic diplomacy has become the chief engine of global politics and prosperity. In a book that will take its place alongside the great diplomatic histories of the period, Diane Kunz offers a definitive history of 50 years of American economic diplomacy.

From the Marshall Plan, to Bretton Woods, the Suez Crisis, the Alliance for Progress, the oil shocks, and beyond, America's international economic leadership has been controversial, at times misguided, difficult to sustain, yet ultimately triumphant. Though traditional wisdom insists that leaders must choose guns or butter—that arms and prosperity are at odds—Kunz argues the controversial thesis that America's economic and security policies worked hand-in-glove. With the great cause of containing communism as a driving force, presidents from Truman to Reagan built a nation both prosperous and strong while helping America's allies to achieve similar strengths. Diane Kunz's masterful narrative recounts the missing story at the heart of the American century.

This is, frankly, a poor book. It is a mediocre history of US economic diplomacy since WWII, but it is episodic in nature and fails to really tie together the ebb and flow of international diplomacy over economic issues. It also entirely fails to discuss the economic theory that governs politics in this area such as rent-seeking, two-level games, and even the Ricardo-Viner or Stophler(sp?)-Samuelson models of international trade. Moreover, in stressing the importance of the US military-industrial complex as a source of economic growth and job creation during this period, she totally ignores concepts basic to economics and economic analysis -- opportunity and transaction costs -- and so wrongly argued that the vast amount of capital spent on the military was GOOD for the US economy. She also, to add to the poor analysis everywhere evident in this book, fails to show any real correlation between military spending and economic growth.

                                                BAD BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars Good on diplomatic history, bad on economics.......2000-03-31

To what did Americans owe their postwar prosperity? In "Butter and Guns: America's Cold War Economic Diplomacy," Yale University professor of history Diane B. Kunz argues: the defense spending policies of the national security state....

If military spending indeed "continually primed the pump of the American economy" (p. 63), as Kunz asserts, she might have wondered where the pump-priming dollars came from. What is missing from her analysis is a sensitivity to the notion of opportunity cost. As historians Thomas G. Paterson ("On Every Front: The Making and Unmaking of the Cold War") and Paul Kennedy ("The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers") have noted, the Cold War saddled America with enormous material costs in terms of forgone socioeconomic well-being, in terms of lost consumer-oriented production, and in terms of overburdened government finances. Moreover, even in the areas of education and infrastructure spending (GI Bills and the interstate highway act), where contemporary liberal economists claim that government spending contributed positively to economic growth, it hardly stands to reason that the Cold War was a prerequisite to such spending. The Cold War did allow America to play a preponderant role in the postwar world, particularly while the economies of Europe and Japan still lay in ruins. Yet the enormous demands that the Cold War placed on the American economy saddled it with costs that became quite apparent by the 1970s. Even NSC-68, the postwar "blueprint" of the national security state, recognized the enormousness of those costs. Kunz does not.

Because Kunz misinterprets the mainsprings of economic growth in the postwar period, she can only lament the passing of the Cold War. Having demonstrated little faith in the workings of free markets, she can only look to the future with a sense of foreboding, as her chapter entitled "Free Trade Forever?" suggests. She concludes, absurdly (but consistently), that "Josef Stalin rescued American fifty years ago" (p. 334) and wonders who is to rescue America now, because "the free market cannot solve every ill" (p. 335).
