Book Description
Increasingly today we seem to face more and more verbal aggression. At work, on the streets, even at home... but how do you deal with it? A common reaction is to shout back, but that will probably just cause the situation to escalate into further abuse. In this book, trainer Robert Agar-Hutton teaches the basic techniques of how to deal with someone who is verbally aggressive, and to bring the situation under control. Suitable for people aged 14 and up.

Dealing with Verbal Aggression.......2007-06-11
"Forewarned is forearmed." This book points out a number of subtle aspects I never considered or were never really consciously aware of in the whole process.
My normal response would have been to fight fire with fire, but then again I can take care of myself physically, having trained in karate for the past 36 years. But my wife and 2 teenaged daughters are not so skilled therefore being able to recognize the early symptoms and respond proactively are what I thought were two of the major assets of this book.
"I've given all three of them the book to read having reread it myself a couple of times.
"It's an easy read, and the principles can be extrapolated even into everyday not so aggressive encounters as one would meet in business, or even being hit by a sales pitch.
"Definitely, a recommended read"
Dealing with Verbal aggression ... more than that.......2007-06-09
The book is exactly as advertised, a basic starter in understanding of how to deal with the verbal aggression. It begins by first helping to identify the causes of verbal aggression, then moves on to explain how to diffuse the different types.
I find the information available in this book easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to put into action.
Many of the examples are based on the British point of view of the writer but the principles are definitely valid and if one looks past that nit picking detail and tries to implement these concepts you will find that they work.
I am a martial art teacher and a medical professional in the psychiatric field and thus have to deal with violence on a very frequent basis. The principles of this book are a tool I use to help de- escalate situations I run into. For that alone I could easily recommend this book
However I think that unfortunately most people only see ways to try to work on anger control but in fact if you examine the concepts in this book, it actually gives you the principles to take charge of your life through challenging your ability to look at all things differently and realize YOU can make changes that put you in control.
Don't be fooled buy its small size... there is far more here than initially meets the eye.
I definitely recommend it ... but I suggest that after you have read it once ... put it down for a couple of weeks and pick it back up and read it again ...
A concise and realistic tool .......2007-06-09
(USA Reader of the "English English" version) How to Deal With Verbal Aggression is, as advertised, a basic starter to give understanding of how to deal with the verbal aggression we do face in our daily and/or professional lives. It begins by first helping to identify the causes of verbal aggression, then moves on to explain how to diffuse the different types. The key to the solution for any problem lies in understanding the nature of the problem - and this book delivers.
The reader can get as much or as little out of this book as they put into it. A skim through will give you the basic concepts, taking the time to complete the offered exercises will offer a much deeper level of understanding. I am a martial art teacher, foster parent, mother, consumer, and presenter among other things. I have found the information available in this book easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to put into action as long as I remain willing to follow the suggestions for my behavior modification. I am also finding the more I put Mr. Agar-Hutton's principles into practice, the fewer "idiots" I seem to be running into.
How to Deal with Verbal Aggression is a refreshing change from the years of cumbersome and unrealistic training materials I have been subjected to. I find it a concise and realistic tool that will come off my shelf again and again to refresh what I know, as well as be recommended to others (but they can't take my copy out of the house!).
A waste of money.......2007-04-18
The book is thin and the content even thinner. It is from the UK and the authors suggested techniques may work there but I am from the US and I thought they were lame.

The literature of bird watching is full of memoirs set in out-of-the-way, rural locales, but few are set in the heart of big cities such as New York, where Wall Street Journal ornithology columnist Marie Winn hangs her hat. In this delightful account, Winn tells of birding in Central Park with an unlikely band of fellow enthusiasts (including Mary Tyler Moore and Woody Allen). Among her objects of study were a pair of increasingly uncommon wood thrushes who set up their nest in the park's Ramble, treating city dwellers to their "penetrating, flutelike, heart-stoppingly beautiful song: Ee-oh-lee, ee-oh-loo-ee-lee, ee-lay-loo," and a pair of red-tail hawks who courted, mated, and produced offspring, thus quickening the spirits of Manhattanites. Both urbanites and those inclined to country matters will enjoy Winn's gracefully written story of observation and discovery.
Book Description
Marie Winn is our guide into a secret world, a true wilderness in the heart of a city. The scene is New York's Central Park, but the rich natural history that emerges here--the loons, raccoons, woodpeckers, owls, and hundreds of visiting songbirds--will appeal to wildlife lovers everywhere. At its heart is the saga of the Fifth Avenue hawks, which begins as a love story and develops into a full-fledged mystery.
At the outset of our journey we meet the Regulars, a small band of nature lovers who devote themselves to the park and its wildlife. As they watch Pale Male, a remarkable young red-tailed hawk, woo and win his first mate, they are soon transformed into addicted hawk-watchers. From a bench at the park's model-boat pond they observe the hawks building a nest in an astonishing spot--a high ledge of a Fifth Avenue building three floors above Mary Tyler Moore's apartment and across the street from Woody Allen's.
The drama of the Fifth Avenue hawks--hunting, courting, mating, and striving against great odds to raise a family in their unprecedented nest site--is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Red-Tails in Love will delight and inspire readers for years to come.

wonderful story.......2007-02-12
I live in Portland Oregon, and have large populations of birds in my back yard, so this was a fun read. Perhaps i will visit NYC someday, and i will bring my glasses! What a nice book!
Birding in central Park.......2007-01-06
Although the star of this book is Pale Male, there are also wonderful stories of encounters with other birds. Marie Winn is a good writer and this is a very entertaining book for anyone interested in Pale Male or birding in Central Park.
SHOULD BE RE-NAMED.......2006-11-10
I was hoping for a more in depth article on Pale Male. This book had a more general theme to it pertaining to all the birds/wildlife in the park. It was okay, I am glad I didn't buy it, a friend let me read hers. I absolutely love, and purchased after watching it, Pale Male, the video produced by Nature, narrated by Joane Woodward.
Repeated Enjoyment.......2005-11-10
Every year goes by and this simple tale becomes more treasured and heartwarming. I have given dozens of copies of this book to friends, birders and non interested alike. Everyone is grateful for the inspiration that this unusual piece of nature brings.
We watch eagles return to a nest along a stretch of the Llano River that falls in line with a highly traveled highway and the human reaction is just the same as the thousands of New Yorkers. Scores and scores of strangers with craned necks and binoculars in raised and ready position, standing in the back of their truck beds only to get a little closer to the marvel of the eagles on the the back side of our very own ranch and river.
From fall to spring each year my weekend exploration includes a trip to see the eagles and I am always thinking through whom else I could share Red Tails In Love with...it is not hard.
Purchased this book in protest against Pale Male's eviction.......2004-12-16
As a New Yorker, I hadn't really paid much attention to Pale Male before this unfortunate state of affairs. There was something shockingly callous and arrogant in the way the board of 927 Fifth Avenue destroyed this magnificent bird's home. I hope the hawks will eventually get their nest back.
I would like to find out more about this star's history and family. My whole family is now crazy about him and Lola.
Hail Pale Male!

Book Description
Written specifically for the Western practitioner, Taijiquan: Through the Western Gate blends modern science and philosophy with the traditional wisdoms—drawn from classic t'ai chi literature—that underlie Chinese martial arts. Author Rick Barrett authoritatively describes a wide range of movements, practices, and positions in the context of such topics as being in the zone, effortless power and force versus power, the whole-body energetic connection, instant meditation, and energetic coherence. Step-by-step exercises help make this sometimes daunting discipline simple and accessible.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE tai chi book.......2007-07-30
Let me mention that I am a student of Rick's.
This book is great! It's clear. It's useful! When people ask me what this whole tai chi thing is about it can be hard to explain to people. Feed them the same old "chi flow, meditation, opening joints etc...." and they will walk away having the assumptions they had about the art reasserted. And they will not be any more inclined to study it.
Let's face it, a great deal of the taiji practitioners in america are those who would not really be doing anything physical except taiji
. If someone is going to choose to spend their time playing taiji instead of something else, they need to know why it is worth it. However beneficial relaxation and health are, they are not usually high on people's lists of priority. Tell people they can become stronger instantly? Tell them they can better ways to respond to anything? Tell them that many of the patterns they have been using their entire lives are inefficient and that there is a better way? That is how to interest people (me included) and that is the promise of this book.
Whenever I've quoted from this book (or told people to read it) it's always challenged people's assumptions.
This book outlines an approach that is essential to westerners. We live in a fast paced society. Pretending that we have the patience to sit around doing a form for 15 years before we learn the inner workings is not realistic. We need to have an intellectual model for what we are working towards, even if we are far from it. That doesn't replace the hard work that is needed to get there, but it allows you to stay interested/engaged enough to carry it out.
very interesting.......2007-06-08
A personal take on why some people find it so hard to reach higher levels of skill in the art.
I wish that the author has not used the word 'energy' to designate phenomena such as chi, jin and others. However, the point that he makes is very valid.
....!.......2007-04-06
If there were a modern day council of the remaining living martial arts masters, to decide which writings from antiquity up to the present time should be canonized into a martial artist's bible: This would be one of the first among the few works included from this century. That being said, Just read it, it may accelerate the progress of your practice exponentially.
It's Still About Faith.......2006-11-15
First and foremost, I want to applaud Sifu Barrett for his effort. We need more books like this one, where experienced internal martial artists do their best to convey what worked for them, what insights helped them attain higher levels of skill. Sometimes, that's all we can do, and the effort sure is appreciated.
Overall I liked Sifu Barrett's insights and approach, and there are some exercises in them that I was unfamiliar with that I will try and hope to gain more insight from. However, from a thesis-critique standpoint, there are serious flaws in Sifu Barrett's arguments.
The good: Sifu Barrett I think tries his honest best to convey his understanding of internal martial arts and associated phenomena. He deals with the principles of structure, softness, qi/energy and tries to give us a paradigm about how to think about it. Barrett does a very nice job of taking real world scientific examples as parallels and using them as analogies for how to better understand the more esoteric concepts associated with Tai Chi. He also references a number of interesting but relatively unknown scientific theories to support his own perception of qi energy etc.. He gives specific exercises, clearly described, with adequate supporting photos, to help cultivate awareness, qi, and softness. Particularly for beginners, this is a superb way to "get a grip" on some of the concepts. A nice way for Western minds to have a starting point when tackling these "mystical" Eastern concepts.
The bad: Sifu Barrett's book begins with the hypothesis that since the scientific method cannot completely explain some of the phenomena associated with Tai Chi, that therefore something else must be going on. He proposes terms such as "energy coherence" and "tensegrity" and effectively explains their foundations to describe these phenomena. So far, so good. Problem is, the linchpin of his hypothesis are examples wherein an untrained partner is able to dramatically improve his/her ability to withstand force by pointing his finger, or reverse scenarios. According to Barrett, these acts cannot be explained by Newtonian physics, and therefore he proposes the utilization of his terms to try and convince us that what is happening is about an energy field and/or conduction of energy along soft tissues rather than nerves. My concern is that I *can* explain his initial examples using a combination of muscle kinesiology and Newtonian physics. There is no mysticism in his initial examples. Most experienced Tai Chi practioners with scientific or engineering backgrounds likely can explain it, as well. It has to do with transmission of force more efficiently through the truncal axis with certain alignments and muscle tensions, and thence into the ground. Moreover, in the examples where Barrett pushes superhard and cannot budge his inexperienced protege-- well, we all know that the *pusher* has much to say about how such force interacts with the "pushee"-- whether it uproots or drives more solidly into the ground. An experienced practitioner like Barrett no doubt has the ability to do either.
Thus, with his leading examples of "energy coherence" reduced in my mind to Newtonian physics and physiology, despite his claims otherwise, the rest of his contentions lacked credibility in my mind. Some of the higher-order stuff that he talked about later in the book (augmenting one's own aura and/or presence, or detecting disturbances in ambient qi) that I cannot explain nor validate at this point, then become, in my mind, once again, about faith. I cannot completely accept his explanation of energy coherence because his initial examples are flawed.
If Barrett had kept this book to one of analogies, as a way of saying-- this is how I think about it, this is what I do, this is how I perceive this-- it would be a much stronger book in my mind. Like I said, he gives some superlative associations with real world scientific parallels. In fact, Barrett may have realized this, because the second half of the book is all about parallels, and he really makes no esoteric claims. But he shouldn't have in the first half, either, because I am still left with the question of-- does Barrett really have "it", or not?
I do believe that his connective tissue theories in the latter part of the book may have some validity to them, and I like his "tensegrity" model a lot (think suspension bridge)-- but they are beyond real scientific validation. Even Barrett's narrative seems to shy away somewhat from alleging that such phenomena are really really real. In some cases he talks about his own inconsistent success in these realms.
I will have to check his scientific references-- but in the meantime, Barrett definitely presents some juicy paradigms to chew on. I have not yet tried his exercises for improving "presence" and such for an extended period of time, however, so who knows? I remain suspicious, however, that such phenomena can appear experientially validated because of the power of suggestion.
Unlike other reviewers, I did not find myself saying "Wow"-- it was more like "Hmm, I don't think so, I can explain (and do) that" in the first part of the book, and "That's an interesting way of looking at it, I'll try it, but I'm still bummed by your claims in the first part of the book" in the second part of the book.
Worth reading. But think of this more as philosophy and friendly suggestions rather than a thesis.
Great for the begginer and the experienced practicioner.......2006-07-31
I have been studying Martial arts for 5 years and energy work has always been a part of this. This book has helped to reinforce some of the concepts already taught by my instuctors and it also helped clarify some of these ideas. In my opinon the greatest strength of this book is the clear simple language used.Mr Barrett's exercises where so simple to do and explain to others that I used them in my own class to help teach our younger students.I also really enjoyed the fact that Mr Barrett has found a way through to science to help support what energy practitioners have known for decades that Chi is real and can be used.Through this book I think he dispells some of the myth surrounding CHi and the meridians. BUY THIS BOOK.

Good Book.......2002-04-05
I would say that this book tells of the cruel actions committed onto slaves. It gives not very descriptive details of what is happening in the book in certain places, but manages to still sum up what's going on. I would recommend this book for people who like reading historically told books and for peopl ewho might need to get an image of what slavery was and how it affected peoples lives.
Harsh historical realities told in vivid detail........1999-08-13
I live just a few short miles from the historical homsestead where Mum Bett served as a slave, and yet I did not know her story until I met Mildred Pitts Walter at a convention. This story does not simply tell of the cruelities of slavery, but more than any other children's book on this subject, it describes the harsh realities of the times for all peoples, the illnesses that took life early, the difficulties encountered in child bearing, and the shortages brought about by the revolutionary war. Although the reviews above criticize the story for its meadering plot, I appreciated the window it gave me on daily life at the time of the American revolution. Ultimately, it is a book about the courage of one woman who fought for what was rightly hers. My adult friends keep borrowing it ...this is not a book for children only.

Book Description
This book differs from others by rejecting the dualist approach associated in particular with Descartes. It also casts serious doubt on the forms of materialism that now dominate English language philosophy. Drawing in particular on the work of Wittgenstein, a central place is given to the importance of the notion of a human being in our thought about ourselves and others.

The best and the brightest on Historical Statistics (I).......2007-07-21
In the last few years I have been searching books offering a general overview of the past, and I have realized that many books entitled "History of ...whatever" only provide information about the West, the rest of the world being almost ignored.
Maddison's on world economy is different, is truly global. It offers historical statistics of the last two thousand years and is to be read together with "The world economy: Historical Statistics " (a combined edition of both volumes is to be published on December 2007). In my opinion this is masterful work that can be savored by the professional historian and educated layperson alike, so my rate is between 5 (content) and 4 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 3, sometimes raising to 5). I highly recommend the two volumes.
Other works whose scope is as amazingly global as Maddison's and which I would suggest to read (hoping that will be of use for those looking for a broad framework to understand ourselves) are the following: 1. Agrarian cultures: "Pre-industrial societies" by Patricia Crone; 2. Government: "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; 3. Ideas: "Ideas, a History from Fire to Freud", by Peter Watson; 4. Religion: "The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach" by Moojan Momen; and 5. War: "War on Human Civilization" by Azar Gat.
One of the best books on the history of the world economy.......2006-10-28
Angus Maddison's The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective is highly unique because of the long historical perspective it brings to the understanding of global economic development and fluctuations. Maddison provides data on population growth, per-capita income, and gross domestic product on regional, national, and global levels for the last 1000 years. The last two centuries receive special attention. For more books on economic development go to my profile and see my Amazon Listmania "Future Studies Reading List."
Classic.......2003-07-08
Attempting to put numbers on past economic activity is a deeply fraught exercise, as the author freely admits.
That being said, this is a book full of useful information and striking estimates. I know of no better place to get a genuine feel for the economic history of the last millennia, but particularly the last two centuries. There is something to startle or surprise anyone within these pages. A necessary edition to the library of anyone seriously interested in history.
a good book.......2002-02-18
This book is seemingly a culmination of the painstaking works taken by Angus Maddison for decades. As I liked his previous works such as the Phases of Capitalist Development, so I like this book very much. Of course, the book contains many 'guesstimations' that are unacceptable to today's economists' rigor. This is more so when the author ventures into almost two millenia before 1820, for which he did relatively little work previously. But even here the book apparently provides reasonable figures synthesizing existing evidences with a lucid interpretation, providing illuminating starting points for future studies.
