Book Description
Written for managers and professionals in business and industry, this book helps the reader in:
* Understanding what is and is not IFRS
* Learning the complexities of IFRS implementation
* Appreciating the contribution of IFRS to corporate governance
The changeover from the mosaic of different heterogeneous national accounting standards to the International Financial Reporting Standards has not been easy. For many companies IFRS, and most particularly the concept of fair value in IAS 39, has amounted to a phase shift which is prerequisite to achieving compliant financial reporting.
The research conducted by Dr. Chorafas for this book, documented that the process of meeting IFRS requirements presents opportunities and challenges to all enterprises. As many companies have found out, abandoning the classical accruals accounting for marking-to-market their transactions and portfolio positions, has not been easy. The conversion process has affected several functions within the organization including balance sheets, P&L statements, auditing, risk control, information systems, and management accounting.
This book is in made up of four parts:
* Part One focuses on business competition, standards boards, corporate accounting, and IAS 39
* The theme of Part Two, is the implementation of IFRS, exemplified through case studies on task forces and practical applications
* Part Three brings together IFRS and management accounting requirements, with emphasis on fair value.
* Part Four addresses itself to the contribution IFRS can make to better corporate governance, and to rebuilding the balance sheet
The book has many case studies based on actual experiences. These range from the implementation of IFRS directives such as hedge accounting, to developing practices of real-time balance sheets; the help provided by sophisticated accounting solutions help in stress testing; and a comprehensive definition of the role of the audit committee.
* A clear and practical view of the complexities of IFRS implementation
* Includes practical case studies from real-life companies going through the process
* Pays particular attention to IAS 39 on Fair Value

Career Development Theory.......2001-07-19
This text starts with a forward by John Krumboltz. Could you ask for a more respected career development theorist to endorse a book? The text addresses the career development of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans and Native Americans. This is one of the few texts that offers the practitioner a guide toward a multicultural theory of career development, and ideas for reliable career assessment and intervention with racial and ethnic minorities.

Bowhunting A to Z.......2001-06-21
This book takes on the daunting task of supplying some solid information about EVERYTHING in bowhunting. I have used it as a place from which to start research on a given bowhunting topic. For instance, if you've never hunted mule deer, but have an interest in learning some of the ins and outs, like where to hunt them, how they differ from whitetails, what you can expect in terrain, shot distance, etc., this book is great. If you want a treatise on how to become an expert mule deer hunter, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, since the purpose of an encyclopedia is to cover breadth above depth, this book accomplishes its goals. A great gift book to give a bowhunter.
Good Basis.......2001-04-24
A very good book of basics especially for beginners.

Book Description
A YOUTH SOCCER COACH'S INVESTIGATION INTO THE ORIGINS OF SOCCERMANIA
Before his son enlisted for a season of Youth Soccer at the neighborhood Boys and Girls Club in College Park, Maryland, Jim Haner was just your typical white, middle-class, suburban father. And as an award-winning journalist for The Sun (Baltimore), he was more likely to write about scoundrels than soccer. But his son caught the bug, and before long, Haner was giving pep talks to nine-year-olds in shin guards and cleats and the game had become an all-consuming obsession.
Digging deep into the historical record, Haner sets out to document the soccer craze from the bottom up, tracing the rises and falls in the game’s popularity in the decades since “Mob Ball” fever was spread by the influx of immigrants on our shores, up to the current wave of “soccermania.” The result is a rollicking and timely read.
“[Haner’s] enthusiasm and good humor is infectious, the history is genuinely interesting, and anyone who doubts that soccer games between nine-year-olds can be chronicled with the same verve and intensity of professional or collegiate sports need look no further . . . Belongs with Franklin Foer’s How Soccer Explains the World (2004) as a must-read for people puzzled by soccer’s popularity.” —Booklist (starred review)

Promising start and consistent quality.......2007-01-14
Basically this is an excellent description of a novice to the soccer world learning its vaules and benefits. The author well documents his passage from novice to becoming a "soccer nut" whom goes overboard like many before him with his passion for this sport. His primary experience is in the recreational levels of the game, but his professional experience allows him to get a unexpected glimpse into the history of the sport in America.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the game itself at any level. His enjoyment of youth sports and their demands upon its paritcipants is an accurate reflection of how many youth sports become a passion, not just an interest.
It is a positive journey about a sport which its fans give their hearts to and will follow throughout their lives.
Good book for coaches, parents, soccer lovers.......2006-09-29
Wow. I am thoroughly impressed with this book. I have played soccer since I was 12, and at 30 am now starting to coach and referee. This book does a great job mixing up stories, advice for coaching kids (and parents) and a little history lesson. I wrote down some of its suggestions for my team. I definitely have caught soccer fever and would recommend this book to others who love soccer or have kids interested in soccer.
You've read this one before.......2006-09-16
The problem with Jim Haner's Soccerhead is that he may be writing about a sport that's new to Americans, but he's using it to tell an old story in an old way. A middle class white guy finally leaves his prolonged adolescence through watching (and in this case coaching) his child play sports. As America changes to accept soccer and becomes a richer nation for doing so, so has his life become better, more adult (part of the subtext within the book is that soccer with its nuances and chess-like strategy is much like modern life) for the experience.
Haner has adopted that rhythmic sing songy ping pong-y format for writing creative non fiction that plagues so much of the genre today - there's a section for the interesting historical facts about the subject, then a section of soul searching personal introspection about the subject, the some historical tidbits and then an amusing personal anecdote. While some may find this comforting, for me, familiarity breeds contempt.
Along the way he attempts to convince us (ala McManus' Positively Fifth Street) that he is (or was) a he-man hell raiser who finds freedom from the chaffing collar of suburbia in...coaching youth soccer. To quote Syrania, ". . . there are a lot of lambs out there trying to be wolves..."
Haner's vast experience as a journalist has gifted him with tightly wrought prose and enviable research skills, as well as the chops to juggle multiple characters in a clear, concise way, but to anyone who doesn't own a gas grill, mortgage, and receding hairline, Soccerhead comes off as more than little self-indulgent.
Good start for the aspiring youth soccer coach........2006-08-12
Nice job blending the fun and frustrations of coaching with the history of soccer in this country - which is a much richer history then I would have guessed. Bogs down a bit in the middle, but definitely worth the time.
Like a film noir comedy ..........2006-07-02
Haner is a genuine hard-bitten gumshoe reporter, the kind of guy who's battled sleazoid pols and his own bosses, and written great stories along the way.
Which is why it's almost incongruous that he's written Soccerhead - a touching, funny, thoroughly reported treatise on the hidden phenomenon of youth soccer, told through the eyes of a befuddled man out of place.
It's a terrific read, a must for any soccerhead - and all the parents of 5-year-olds who don't know that they're destined to be soccerheads.

Written by Patricia T. O'Conner, an editor at the New York Times Book Review, Woe Is I gives lighthearted, witty instruction on the subject most of us dreaded in school--grammar. Discussion is brief and concise, and much more engaging than the grammar books you may remember. With chapter titles such as "Woe is I: Therapy for Pronoun Anxiety," "Your Truly: The Possessive and the Possessed," "Verbal Abuse: Words on the Endangered List," "Comma Sutra; The Joy of Punctuation," and "Death Sentence: Do Cliches Deserve to Die?," O'Conner proves that even grammar can make for entertaining reading.
Book Description
The bestselling grammar book has been updated and revised to include the latest and greatest on the basics and subtleties of English, and features a new chapter on the language of the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Grammar Review.......2007-07-30
This book was suggested to me some years ago by an English lit professor and I've only finally gotten around to finishing it. As the title states it's a grammar guide written in (mostly) plain English. Woe Is I is a an easy and enjoyable read for anyone wanting to brush up on their grammar, spelling, and punctuation and O'Connor makes use of terrific and creative sentences that make the various rules easier to recall. I certainly had some disagreements with the book (after all, language is living) and the biggest turn off for me was the lack of acknowledging more progressive and modern language.
Great Book.......2007-05-12
Great book for anyone that needs basic grammar and more. Especially good for SAT prep.
Pleasurable read, good advice.......2007-05-06
"Woe is I" caught my eye in a bookstore, with its cutesy title, where it stood out against the dry, text-like grammar references in a quick scan. Patricia O'Conner did not disappoint, and her advice nearly always hits its mark for people who actually care about the finer points of grammar. The book is much more about grammar than the popular "Eats, Shoots, & Leaves", and I easily preferred this one.
The author ranges from grammar and usage concepts to exact details on words and punctuation. She mixes in some fun and cute examples, which I can understand would put off some people, whereas I found it part of the pleasure of the book because the author didn't go overboard.
I consider myself pretty solid on usage and grammar, and was happy to discover many topics confirmed my own thoughts and style, even when I didn't explicitly realize the rules she spelled out. It was good to learn exactly why some of those rules were true, and her flexibility on such items as split infinitives was refreshing.
She covered some areas I sometimes struggle with (e.g., "she dislikes my smoking", "who" vs. "whom", and "like" vs. "as") and identified relatively obscure examples I probably get wrong and now can try to do properly. Isn't that one of the reasons to read a grammar book, anyway?
Perhaps the only topic about which I disagreed was whether to use apostrophes in certain plurals, as in 1970s vs. 1970's, which she admits is no big deal and basically a coin toss anyway.
The chapter on e-mail best practices is good advice, even though it doesn't really fit with the book's emphasis on grammar.
The Enjoyable Side to Grammar.......2007-04-02
Patricia T. O'Conner speaks to the masses about the English language. WOE IS I: THE GRAMMARPHOBE'S GUIDE TO BETTER ENGLISH IN PLAIN ENGLISH is recommended reading for refreshing one's memory to properly using pronouns, gerunds, possessives, and a variety of other common mistakes made when writing and speaking in English. This book may be a good start to re-approaching the language.
O'Conner uses a quirky approach to explaining and showing the basic nuts and bolts of grammar. As she states in the introduction, it is a survival guide or a quick read to understanding and correcting common mistakes, and is clearly reader-friendly, which will alleviate any anxiety or struggle. Although the book is not meant to be an introduction, it is a good supplement and reference source to previously read textbooks related to English grammar.
WOE IS I is a convenient book that may be referenced more than once. It is light enough to be carried and read at any time, and it is suitable reading for any occasion. The book is as helpful as it is humorous when grasping the English language.
Strunk & White, but funnier........2007-04-02
(Note: I have the first edition of this book. I believe this second edition has more about e-mail than the first edition.)
This book is close in content to Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style". It covers the same grammatical concepts such as subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, punctuation, etc. The biggest difference is that Ms O'Conner uses humor to help maintain her reader's interest.
I wouldn't recommend buying both this and "The Elements of Style", unless you learn better through repetition. Of the two, I prefer O'Conner's not only because it is more fun to read, but because it also includes more examples of each topic. Also, O'Conner is a bit more open to modern usages.
If you prefer to learn from teachers who use humor to engage their students; choose this book. If you would rather your teachers get straight to the point; Strunk & White would probably suit you better. Personally, I enjoy both styles of teaching, and will keep both books near me while I try to learn to write well.

One-Sided History.......2006-08-28
This is an incomplete and polemical history of U.S. trade policy written from a protectionist point of view. On the plus side, Eckes served as an International Trade Commissioner in the 1980s and has an insider's knowledge of American trade politics; in addition, while preparing the book, he turned up some interesting documents on the role of the State Department in trade remedy cases in the 1950s and '60s. However, he offers no economic analysis, does not present both sides of the trade debate, and sneers at professional economists rather than rebuts the case they make for free trade. (One almost wonders about his impartiality on the ITC). He also barely mentions U.S. policy in the GATT or the WTO. These are fatal lapses in a book on this subject. Not recommended.

Book Description
In the 1980s a large number of Latin American countries reverted from military dictatorships to civilian democracies. In most cases the new democratic governments inherited an extremely precarious economic situation, which left little room to manoeuvre. This book analyzes the special problems that governments face in the formulation and implementation of economic policy after the restoration of democracy. In each of six cases - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay - an analysis is made of the difficulties encountered and the performance of the democratic governments.
