This book is written for the manager who must hire good people. After reading this book I feel I know how to stay focused in my search as well as where to get people. The questions that can be asked during the interview located in the Appendix were EXTREMELY helpful. I used to think that I ran a high risk of asking something illegal, but now realize that there are many questions I can lawfully ask. Overall, this book was an excellent investment.

I needed this book when I first became a manager 10 years ago, but at least I have it now. Ms. Hacker did a great job of organizing the chapters and making the book understandable. I hire people almost weekly and finally know why I have had problems in the past. This book showed me how to organize my search and zero in on the right person for the job. Extremely Helpful Information.......1999-12-28

This book is written for managers both new and experienced. I have been supervising people for more than 20 years. I found this book to be loaded with good, solid information that I could use and share with my staff. Hiring good people that mesh with the rest of the team isn't easy, especially given the low unemployemnt rate. The author organized this book in a manner that made it convenient to pick up and put down as time permitted. I learned a number of things that have changed the way I recruit for my department. I have 500 people I'm responsible for as a plant manager. I needed this book 20 years ago!

Pretentious Poppy-cock.......2007-01-27

I purchased this book after having heard good things about it. What I got was one of the biggest disappointments of my life as far as books go. Kestenbaum has a right to hike however he wishes, but to pass off his personal ideas as the "one true way" is absolute bull!

First, he talks about how no extra ounce hitches a ride in HIS pack. He religiously cuts every tag and extra strap off of every piece of gear he owns. He carefully selects his gear. Yet, he still maintains a pack of over 12 pounds. The vast majority of people who consider themselves ultralight maintain a base pack weight of UNDER 12 lbs, not over it! Kestenbaum continuously skips over gear that many ultralighters love, and gives preference to his personal selections, despite the extra weight involved. Yet remember, no extra ounce hitches a ride in HIS pack!

Second, and this is the worst of the book in my opinion, is that the section on meditation (yep, there's a section on meditation) is longer than the sections on hygiene and water treatment! Please Mr. Kestenbaum, explain to me how meditation is more important to backpacking than hygiene and meditation?

Kestenbaum's work has some useful information, but not much. In truth, the vast majority of the useful information is available on the internet for no money. Of the ultralight authors out there, Ryel Kestenbaum shouldn't even be mentioned. His base weight exceeds the limits of what is considered ultralight, his philosophy is pointless to ultralight backpacking, and his information is weak at best. Money spent on this book would be best spent elsewhere.

Trim the fat........2007-01-15

This book goes over the writrers gear list of his commercially bought products that he cut the labels off of and shortened the straps to lighten the load. Most of the info in this book is stated on the internet in better wording and a more practical manner. Much of this book is just his opinion of how things might work because he never enven tried the products. From my understanding he doesn't even have any serious experience under his belt. He has hiked several hundred miles but never completed any long distance trails. His biggest achievement is that he attempted the PCT. Save your money and do some online research or if you want to buy a book, find a copy of Ray Jardine's "Beyound Backpacking."

Good if you're just beginning.......2007-01-09

We were interested in getting into backpacking and were given this book for Christmas. As folks who knew nothing about backpacking, the product info in this book has been very useful. It is obvious that this book will become quickly outdated, but for us it has been quite useful to understand what we need and what is available.

Other books are much better.......2006-11-21

This book has some useful information and guidance so I decided to give it two stars. It isn't the worst book I've seen on backpacking but it isn't very good. I understand why others don't like the "preaching". The book is loaded with it.

The author recommends that you cut tags, cut straps, cut off toothbrush handles, etc. According to the author, this gets you into the state of mind for ultralight. It isn't what lightweight backpacking is about. It is about knowing the weight of everything you put in your pack. In the clothing section, the author only mentions fleece for the insulation layer. This is very out of date. There are far better insulation layer alternatives that are much lighter. In the shelter section, he doesn't cover tarps sufficiently, the only option for someone going ultralight. In the section that covers water, he recommends iodine tablets, a very poor choice with Aquamira and other chlorine dioxide products on the market.

After reading lots of books on backpacking, reading the internet, and practicing it for two years, I came back and read this book again. Some books I get something of value when I read them the second time. This book was a complete zero for me the second time around. If you're interested in lightening your backpack and want to read a short book like Kastenbaum's Ultralight backpacker, I strongly recommend Don Ladigin's Lighten Up! book. It is far better.

Not enough specific information..........2006-06-26

This book would be better called, "Lightweight Backpacking". With the exception of cutting off extra material and drilling holes in your toothbrush, most of the info is covered better elsewhere (see Chris Townsend's "The Backpacker's Handbook") and doesn't really fall exclusively into ultralight backpacking.

I actually got to meet Connie Rae Strain and see a presentation given by her about "Perfect Imperfections." She is one of the nicest people you can ever meet! "Perfect Imperfections" is a great book about a girl and her horse. Connie really wants a horse. She begs her dad to get her one and he does! This book is about their adventures.

My first reaction when I heard about the book from a friend was,
"It's a book about a horse, maybe I'll read it, maybe I won't--how intersting can that be?" So I bought the book..and I read it..and I loved it!! It is a well written story that moves at a good pace. The young girl's adventures through a life that isn't always so happy, tugs at your heartstrings. Reading about areas I am familiar with in the NW was a fun bonus!! I highly recommend this book and look forward to Ms. Strain's next adventure!!

This is a fun and heartwarming story of a young girl growing up in adverse conditions yet continues to pursue her dream. The bumps in the road are just small obstacles that only a young girl would see as a challenge rather than a roadblock. It made me laugh out loud at times, remembering myself as a fourteen year old.

Most observers agree that the global arena is in the midst of multiple changes. The elements that create and intensify global interdependencies have been expanding rapidly, generating questions about the viability of the state and the viability of the state-centric system that has existed for over 500 years, as well as what sorts of structures and behaviors might replace them. And yet much of the analysis is not helpful in understanding the condition of the international system because it either fails to define the meaning of terms such as interdependence and order or treats these as new problems ignoring many important ideas that have developed over the years about international politics. One of our most accomplished scholars in international affairs, Harvey Starr offers a fresh and original analysis of the nature of the international system. Starr argues that the global system can best be understood as the consequence of states adapting to changing interdependencies. States do remain important in this system, but the reality they adapt to is changing. Thus the environment surrounding states is important not because it is "anarchic," as argued by structural realists such as Waltz, but because environmental conditions have changed, thereby changing the meaning and significance of such structural characteristics as "anarchy." Starr argues that we must recognize that the modes by which states adapt to change in the international system lead to changes in both the states themselves and in their environment.

By August 1998, the Hong Kong economy had become threatened not only by the natural consequences of the Asian crisis (1997/8), but also by waves of speculation, betting that the authorities would be forced to abandon the linked exchange rate (to the US dollar). When facing previous speculative attacks (starting October 1997), the authorities had followed traditional policies of raising interest rates. But, by August 1998, such policies had helped to batter asset markets; property prices and output were falling, and confidence was low. Moreover, the speculators had developed an ingenious 'double-play', simultaneously selling both the foreign exchange market and the Hang Seng equity market short; whether the authorities used an interest rate defence, or abandoned the 'link', the speculators would gain either way. So, the authorities decided on a bold, unexpected and unconventional response to reports of a further attack. They would undertake counter-intervention, again both in the equity and foreign exchange markets. This was the largest, and most successful, counter-speculative intervention ever undertaken. In comparison to the size of Hong Kong's economy, it was massive. On one day -- Friday, 28 August, 1998 -- the authorities bought up around five per cent of the total capitalization of the Hang Seng. Despite the eventual success of the exercise, the authorities have been quite reticent about their actions, revealing only the aggregate amounts of purchases of each stock intervened. This book uses publicly available market data to trace out the authorities' actions on a blow-by-blow basis, primarily in the Hang Seng equity market, but also in the futures and foreign exchange market. The authors set the intervention in its economic context, describe its development, and assess its results. The book provides a fascinating story and insights into what lessons academics and practitioners can learn from the turbulent events of the time.

This paper examines the Hong Kong IPO market from August 1995 to July 1999 and finds that the time of the June 30 1997 political handover coincides with the transition in the IPO market from 'hot' to 'cold'. Although the handover was an anticipated event, an explanation for the change in market is that the political handover created uncertainty among investors; a type of information asymmetry where all investors faced greater uncertainty. Our finding provides empirical support to literature which proposes that events in the months preceding the October 27 1997 correction in Asian stock markets facilitated a decline in confidence in financial markets, subsequently characterised as the 'Asia Financial Crisis'. In addition, we find initial returns of newly listed stocks in the Hong Kong market are associated with market condition but not associated with any particular industry (i.e., PROPERTY) or geographic location (i.e., 'H' SHARES) suggesting that the prevailing market condition was spread more generally across issues.

This study compares pre- and post-listing financial and operating performance for a complete sample of H-firms that are incorporated in Mainland China and listed in Hong Kong between 1993 and 2000. Theoretically, there are two major opposing influences on the performance change of these newly listed firms: negative initial public offering (IPO) effect and positive privatization effect. Our major findings are: (1) the IPO effect dominates the privatization effect, so that the H-firms experienced a significant decrease in profitability and operating efficiency after listing, and (2) the performance of a control sample of newly listed private firms declined more than that of the H-firms, probably because the positive privatization effect somewhat offset the negative IPO effect for the H-firms. This paper is the first to document the positive effect of privatization in oversea listed Chinese companies.
