              Book Description

The interconnectedness of the global environment and finiteness of the earth's natural resources require an increased understanding of environmental and natural-resource policy and politics in countries around the world. This is especially true of industrializing countries where widespread ecological disturbances and rapid exploitation of natural resources are taking place. Ecological Policy and Politics in Developing Countries provides an in-depth study of ecological problems, policies, and politics in ten major industrializing countries. Each chapter discusses the increasingly international context of domestic environmental policies and explores some of the powerful interests and institutional forces that contribute to ecological problems and shape the policies to deal with them in each country. The authors identify some of the major impediments to both well-designed environmental policies and their effective implementation. The ten countries included here--the Czech Republic, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Taiwan, Thailand, Slovakia, and Venezuela--cover five continents, over half of the world's population and most of the major industrializing countries.

              Book Description

The Great American Pastime has changed. For the first time in the history of the game, the three major forces that drive the evolution of modern pro baseball-The Triple Revolution-is revealed:

              The Triple Revolution:

              (1) Globalization of Recruiting and Business

              (2) Scientific Analysis & Reduction of Physical Baseball Movements

              (3) Evolution Effect of Modernized Stat-Crunching

Charles Euchner uses a dramatic moment-by-moment narrative of the seventh game of the 2001 World Series between the Yankees and the Diamondbacks to display the Triple Revolution; and to reveal the hidden dimensions of the "game within the game": From pitching motions to batting styles, from fielding and base-running, to training and strategy.

Euchner uses extensive interviews with all the players from this modern classic to produce a comprehensive view of the game that will fascinate casual fans, and stimulate baseball experts. The insider narrative includes Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, Luis Gonzalez and Curt Schilling, along with the game's coaches, managers, support staff, even medical researchers and top game stats experts.

Among the questions answered: What is the ideal pitching motion? How can we judge defensive performance? What makes managers succeed and fail? What changes the odds over the course of the game? And much more. Whether a recreational fans, or serious student of the game, The Last Nine Innings enlightens; as baseball author Andrew Zimbalist writes, "You'll never watch a baseball game the same way."

3 out of 5 stars A Good Read, Some Serious Flaws.......2007-04-04

In a book that details one game nearly pitch-by-pitch, there were some GLARING ERRORS that someone should've caught before this went to print:

-Danny Bautista is NOT a switch-hitter as stated in the book
-Danny Bautista does not play left field, he plays right. Luis Gonzalez played right field for the D'backs from 1999-2006.
-as I saw in a post below, Tony Womack's game-tying hit went to right field, not left
-as they also pointed out, Paul O'Neill plays right field, not left

I am sure there are others that we missed. That lack of attention to detail undermines much of the credibility of the book.

While I enjoyed the biographical information on Finley, Randy Johnson, etc., this book lacks continuity: some chapters are about the science of hitting, one is about Latino ballplayers struggling to adapt to America, one part relates to which parts of the brain relate to various-baseball functions.

I was at Game 7... so it was neat to re-live one of the most amazing nights of my life... but as far as sports books I give this one a solid "C-".... I would definitely say it's a library rental or borrow-from-a-friend book... not one you'll cherish.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of the year [...].......2006-11-26

Every so often, a book comes along that is really special -- it contributes to the way people think about a topic, and possibly encourages them to look at something in a completely different way. The Last Nine Innings is one of those books.

Rewind to Game 7 of the 2001 World Series between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees were looking for a fourth straight ring, while the Diamondbacks, only in their fourth year of existence, were staking their claim on the game's greatest prize with a collection of top-notch veterans and role players. One team was going home with the hardware that night - while the other would be going home with a lot of what if's and a long wait until the next season.

Charles Euchner takes this amazing setting and breaks down nine innings of baseball - mixing physics, storytelling, play-by-play, history, medicine and statistics to literally rip every thread out of the seams of a ballgame and examine the makings of a championship game. It analyzes the amazing amount of stress and almost torture that the human body endures playing the game. It takes you inside the impact that the Diamondbacks had on baseball in the greater Phoenix area, and how they have transformed the Valley of the Sun into one of the hotbeds of youth and amateur baseball.

Euchner takes you on the field, into the clubhouse, the front office, and the heads of some of the games biggest stars, while never taking the game over your head.

This is one book that will both engage and challenge the serious fan, while entertaining and enlightening the casual one. As a serious follower of baseball, I would love to be able to put this book into the hands of anyone who has ever or will ever watch a baseball game so that they might better understand the inner workings of what happens on and off the field -- and not frivolous details such as a player's favorite food. From the moment I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Especially during this final week of the postseason, it is a timely read that will help you appreciate just what is going on between the final two teams left.

Enjoyable? Absolutely. Worth adding to your bookshelf? Definitely. In fact, I'd suggest adding it to a friend's bookshelf as well - it is that good, and you'll benefit from it as much as your friend will.

              --Pat Lagreid

5 out of 5 stars In the tradition of great narrative nonfiction writers.......2006-04-26

Some of my favorite books are narrative nonfiction, such
as Tracy Kidder's "Soul of a New Machine" and "House", or
Michael Ruhlman's great books about cooking and building
wooden boats. When done well, these sorts of books are
interesting whether or not you know about or care about
the underlying topic. The reader is entertained, and
learns a topic in great depth.

Charles Euchner's book is in the same league (no pun intended)
as these gold standards of narrative nonfiction. The dust
jacket reviews are true... I will never watch a baseball game...
even my son's Little League game...in the same way again.

The book covers topics such as the physics of the game, the
international supply chain of talent, and the physical
punishment that the game brings to players.

Definitely a cool read whether you know alot about baseball
or just want to learn something new in an entertaining way.

5 out of 5 stars Good for baseball fans as well as fanatics.......2006-04-05

I love all kinds of sports, but am only "technically knowledgeable" in football. While I had some notion of the science behind athletes training, I had no idea that baseball involved so many intricacies, with every pitch, hit, and fielding play. That's the great surprise I had with Last Nine Innings.

I thought I'd like it because I really enjoyed the 2001 World Series between the Yankees and Diamondbacks, but I found discovering the "inside world" of baseball even more enjoyable; the author wrote about it in an easy to understand way. What I'm trying to say is: As an Average Joe fan, this book helped me appreciate intricacies of the game which I would have never known about, and never would have bothered to study about in an almanac or reference book. A very good read!

4 out of 5 stars Review: "The Last Nine Innings" .......2006-03-28

In his book, "The Last Nine Innings: Inside the Real Game Fans Never See," Charles Euchner uses the final game of the 2001 World Series as an operating platform - where he takes the events of the game, by inning, and by each plate appearance (and sometimes by each pitch) and then uses those particular events to segue into narrative examination on the details behind copious key elements of Major League Baseball today.

These topics include sports training and conditioning - both for the mind and body, defensive technique and skill throughout the diamond, pitch selection, pitching and batting mechanics, manager decisions, the impact of the baseball statistical revolution, and the globalization of the baseball talent pool.

To be candid, as I started reading "The Last Nine Innings," being someone who has listened to professional commentary from parts of over 3,000 big league baseball games and who has read nearly 150 books on baseball, my impression (about roughly 10% into the book) was "I'm not seeing much that I don't already know." However, that reaction quickly changed - within minutes - as I began to continue reading. In fact, the further that I went into this book, I became increasingly (at what seemed like an exponential rate) more impressed with Euchner's storytelling and the amount of detail provided therein.

I especially enjoyed the passages concerning Steve Finley's work with chiropractor Edythe Heus, the role of the brain's rostromedical prefrontal cortex in body movement, the elements of a batting swing, the research performed at the American Sports Medicine Institute on pitching motions, the impact of particular game events on the change of win probability, the advantages of veteran players, the development of the Athletic Desire Index, and how Chuck Knoblauch taking Randy Johnson deep in the count during an 8th inning At Bat actually helped the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Having read "The Last Nine Innings," in its entirety, I can submit that this book is one of the best available encapsulations of everything inside and behind the scenes of modern baseball. This is not to imply that it is just a cold collection of facts. It is quite the opposite. In addition to being a robust collection of "everything you need to know," Euchner's book is very entertaining. (And, this is coming from a Yankees fan who always imagined that nothing but pain would come from ever revisiting Game Seven of the 2001 World Series.) When you consider all the interesting players and personalities involved in this particular game, just the numerous and insightful interviews (alone) that Euchner provides with several of these participants make this book worth the price of admission. When you tack on the plethora of other information that "The Last Nine Innings" provides, it's a great experience obtained at a bargain.

To summarize the benefit from reading "The Last Nine Innings," I would offer that this book is the perfect primer for the neophyte baseball fan who wants to expeditiously learn everything that is essential to the game today while also serving as an effective multipurpose reference tome for the more experienced baseball enthusiast.

To be fair, I did notice two small faux pas in the edition that I read. When describing the fan salute that Paul O'Neill received during Game Five of the 2001 World Series, it refers to him as the "Yankees' left fielder." And, when mentioning Tony Womack's hit during the 9th inning of Game Seven of the Series, Euchner states "Womack hits the ball hard to left field." When, in reality, O'Neill was a right fielder in Game Five and Womack's hit in Game Seven was to right field. But, in the grand scheme of things here, these are just two minor nitpicks and do not change my recommendation on "The Last Nine Innings."

"The Last Nine Innings: Inside the Real Game Fans Never See" should be considered as an essential element of any worthwhile baseball library and is highly recommended.

The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner is where the bride and groom can record wedding ideas, create budget guidelines, check items off their to-do list, generate the guest list, store contact information for their wedding vendors, and get tips and advice on the best way to plan their big day.

Chapter by chapter, the planner walks the bridal couple through each major step: for example, choosing the reception site, picking a photographer, and deciding on a menu. Author Carley Roney and the editors of The Knot Web site have talked with both wedding professionals and hundreds of thousands of brides and grooms, and have a good idea of the necessary ingredients for a successful wedding. Most helpful and thorough are each chapter's "Questions to Ask" checklists and the "Knot Knowledge" tips, which include money-saving ideas. The book also contains a gift log, a budget tracker, and a wedding-day phone contacts sheet.

Roney offers loads of helpful advice, such as recommending that the bride and groom declare "wedding free zones" where the couple makes time for activities together that have nothing to do with planning the wedding. Each chapter also includes her down-to-earth answers to commonly asked questions, such as whether it's appropriate for a relative to host a shower or if the wedding couple should pay for guests' travel expenses. 3 out of 5 stars The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner.......2007-09-24

I thought this book was very good. It has a list of things that I never thought of and the worksheets are great. The only thing that would have been an added bonus was a place to keep documents within the book. However, for first time brides as myself this book was much needed.

              1 out of 5 stars not pleased.......2007-08-24

I was not pleased with this - the inside was black and white - very text heavy. Who has time to read all those annoying lists when they're getting married? They want to look at pretty things and keep things organized. I ended up giving it away.

              4 out of 5 stars a good first choice.......2007-08-23

I liked this book but bought the 3 ring binder and didnt have much use for it.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Wedding Helper!.......2007-07-31

While this book wasn't the "end all" to planning my wedding, it gave a great basic overview that helped me not to forget things. It is full of wonderful worksheets that proved more helpful than I realized at the time; without them I wouldn't have been able to remain on budget. I really recomend it, because it helps you know what percentage of your budget you should spend on different parts of your wedding (for example, if you have a budget of $15,000, and flowers should be 5% of your budget, then you know that you can plan to spend $750 on flowers and still be in budget.) They even broke it down further so that you knew what expenses fell into the "flower" category (alter flowers, boquets, corsages, decorative flowers for the reception hall, etc.) I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful.......2007-05-04

This was the best wedding book yet which I'm still using it I loved all of the worksheet I even copyed them onto my scanner and printed them in different colors so I could keep better organized.

              Book Description

What if you are nineteen, agonizingly shy, and need to get a job?

Lacking a lighthouse in New Mexico, Gwendolyn Springfield applies for a job at the local flower shopÂ…and gets it. She tries to hide from the world, but the world, alas, comes to her.

Weddings, funerals, gatherings large and small; all of them parade through her door—and into her life. She sees—and hears—it all.

Meet Marjorie Wilkes, the Boss. She doesnÂ't understand the "invisible cage" Gwen constantly finds herself in. Then thereÂ's Mrs. Hardcouer, the town troublemaker. All the townsfolk unload on Gwen, but to whom does she confide?

The Flower Shop unfolds like a Willa Cather Novel: slow, with the sweep of insight and understanding gathered up at the end. Through others, Gwen comes to know herself.

This novel is not recommended for girls under fifteen.

5 out of 5 stars Best to stick with it........2005-05-11

I, too, found it slow going at first, but I was intrigued by the gay couple. They stand out as no more or less eccentric than anyone else.
Everyone seems to be dealt a fair hand, and I thought it was even a little bit "mystical." Might be a bit "strong" for very young girls, but a realistic look at rape, even if it was hard to read at first.
I'm not clear on exactly where in New Mexico it takes place (and I've been there) but it seems to be a beautiful, accurate description.

              5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read........2004-10-27

More of a character study than heavily plotted. Lovely, strong main character "voice." Some beautiful descriptions of New Mexican landscape. Unusual in that it shows two gay "side" characters in a positive light. Does show how brutal acts committed by -- and on -- a local person are often overlooked by the authorities.

                Book Description

This book presents a concept of interactive economic institutions and systems, considered by the author to be a bottleneck to scientific progress.

In the author's evaluation of contemporary institutional economics, the focus is on the interaction of complex economic structures in terms of their coordination routines, emergent behavioral characteristics and also their economic performance. Differences of behavior characteristics and economic performances are explained as consequences of differently structured coordination routines. The book demonstrates that complexity, rather than being part of the problem of institutional analysis, can be made part of the solution.

Economic Institutions and Complexity will appeal to academics and researchers of New Institutional Economics, microeconomics, evolutionary economics, political science, organization sociology and behavioral science.

How to Globalize to Survive in the New Economy

At a time in which globalization impacts corporate strategy as never before, corporate leaders are challenged to consider all the implications of a new global economy. Characterized by a myriad of competing forces, this new global economy is highlighted by unprecedented advances in technology of all kinds.

With such unrelenting change blurring the view, corporate leaders need the benefit of the best thinking in order to focus on the right global strategies. World View offers just such thinking, featuring examples of strategies and best practices used by successful companies worldwide in moving toward global markets. In his introduction to this collection of Harvard Business Review articles, editor Jeffrey Garten pinpoints five emerging themes:

                * Operating in a global market requires CEOs to rethink every aspect of their strategies.
                * The best strategies require that organizations gather massive amounts of information and process it effectively.
                * Companies that succeed on a global scale are constant innovators, learning and implementing simultaneously.
                * Great global companies create cultures conducive to extensive internal and external collaboration and networking.
                * Radical change brings unprecedented opportunity to capture markets and enhance shareholder value.

Seeing globalization through the eyes of leading thinkers and executives who have mastered its challenges, World View presents forward-thinking insights for corporate leaders determined to succeed in the always-new and uncertain global economy. A Harvard Business Review Book.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but interesting for what it leaves out........2006-02-09

The thematic collections of articles from the Harvard Business Review are clearly popular enough to justify more. This one is on globalisation and its implications. As ever, the articles selected are well organised, with a useful short introduction.

As with several of the collections, the really interesting thing is what is not covered. To an observer, three of the things that are really uncertain in the global economy, with large potential implications for global strategy, are financial instability, the growth of consumer dissent and activism and the pressure to build environmental sustainability. The first two topics do not appear at all and the third is represented only by an interview with the CEO of a company that has since changed its name, apparently as a direct of result of customer backlash to its chosen path to sustainability.

The impression is of a book that represents a somewhat complacent corporate conventional wisdom, in which change will occur in ways that we understand and can, within limits, control and more radical possibilities are comfortably not in contemplation. The failure of the Kyoto conference has amply demonstrated this lack of vision. As AtKisson and Hawken have pointed out, the obvious response to the problem of global warming is a large - and, in even the medium term, potentially enormously profitable for someone - thrust to bring on the hydrogen economy. Yet, as far as one can determine from the reports, this solution was not even seriously raised, let alone debated.

A true 'world view' is likely to see strategies that are much more radical and much less comfortable for conservative business, than this collection seems to suggest.

I am impressed on Garten's and his contributor writers telling MNCs past lessons trying to penetrate into Asia's markets in India and China. I find it interesting especially local companies tried to sort strategies since there are no longer consider as monopoly to counter-attack before they enter the market! This will give local producers to be much more competitive than before. Eventually, they repaired their reputation and efficient production and service than before!MNCs need to worry much especially they don't understand the Asian culture and taste! It may be a suicide mission if MNCs don't study the culture and the background of the country! Although the population in India and China approxed 2.2 billion doesn't mean that it is a 100% peneteration! These may find on Part 1: Emerging Markets and Part 2: Europe and Asia This book is highly recommended to Asian Small-Medium Entrepreneurship and asian big corporate companies as it is important to know how much competitive market as the world trade tariff walls declined! It is undoubtfully an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Abundant Insights.......2001-02-11

Many organizations are now struggling to formulate global strategies for the New Economy. Garten has assembled sixteen different essays in which various experts identify a number of different strategies to consider and then suggest how such strategies could be implemented. The material is organized within four Parts:

Emerging Markets [eg Prahalad and Lieberthal on "The End of Corporate Imperialism"]

Europe and Asia [eg Williamson on "Asia's New Competitive Game"]

Corporate Strategies [eg Porter on "Clusters and the New Economics of Competition]

Leadership [three interviews: Victor Fung, Robert B. Shapiro, and John Browne]

Garten then provides Executive Summaries and About the Contributors, both sections giving the reader a frame-of-reference within which to evaluate the specific essays and their respective authors. Garten is eminently well-qualified. You are urged to check out another of his books, The Mind of the C.E.O., in which he shares what he learned from interviews with 40 CEOs of major global corporations.

In the Introduction, Garten identifies several "common themes" revealed throughout the sixteen essays: operating in a global market requires CEOs to rethink everything about their strategies -- even what strategy means in an environment which is changing so fast and is so brutally competitive; the best strategies require organizations that are set up for gathering massive amounts of information and processing it effectively; companies that succeed on a global scale are constant innovators; great global companies create a culture conducive to extensive internal and external collaboration; and finally, virtually all of the authors agree that change is brining unprecedented opportunity to capture markets and enhance shareholder value.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this superb anthology of separate but inter-related essays? Obviously, the governing board members and other senior executives of global organizations (which include but are not limited to for-profits) as well as CEOs of companies which include one or more of the global organizations among their own clients. Also, business students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who seek a single-volume source of information and insight concerning global strategies for the New Economy. (Have you checked out the price of textbooks lately?) For those in need of additional sources, Garten provides an abundance of them in the "About the Contributors" section.

Those who share my high regard for this book should also check out Dun & Bradstreet's Guide to Doing Business Around the World (Morrison et al) and also, if relevant, Doing Business in Asia (Dunung) and/or The New Silk Road (Stuttard's observations on doing business in China). Having accurate and sufficient information is obviously very important but without an appropriate strategy, information cannot be effectively leveraged. Hence the importance of the diverse and abundant wisdom which is so readily available in this book.

4 out of 5 stars What we are about to live.......2000-05-03

In this world of changes we must know our next future. This book brings us these informations. Garten handles a torchlight to the future of the world and organizations. It is surprising how he connects the wires and alll we have to do is just follow the line of the words. Undoubtfully is a great book.

                Book Description

Written by internationally recognized crisis management expert Steven Fink, Sticky Fingers is the first practical guide that shows companies large and small, publicly traded or privately held, how to avoid huge financial losses from economic espionage, and what to do if a company believes it has been victimized. The FBI ranks economic espionage among the greatest threats to our national security since the end of the Cold War. It costs U.S. businesses more than $250 billion a year, and no company is immune from the risks.

Readers will be able to intimately follow every step behind the scenes of the landmark Avery Dennison/Four Pillars spy case and learn from the vantage points of the spy, the victimized company, the FBI, and the Justice Department prosecutors - from first suspicions to ultimate jury verdict.

                Sticky Fingers also details:
                * A list of the top countries that spy on U.S. businesses
                * Why the biggest threat comes from within — and what to do about it
                * Cybercrimes - from amateur hacking to professional netspionage
                * How to formulate a crisis communications plan
                * Dealing—or not dealing—with the FBI

Woven throughout the book, the epic lessons from the Avery Dennison/Four Pillars case - the longest and largest economic espionage case in U.S. history, and the first ever to go to trial since the passage of the landmark Economic Espionage Act - are combined with insights of other companies that have been victimized, including Lucent Technologies, Kodak, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, MasterCard, Gillette, Bristol-Myers Squibb, PPG Industries, and many others. Companies can fight back to reduce their risk, using the clear, pragmatic crisis management strategies outlined in this book.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Winner!!!.......2003-07-01

Steven Fink, author of the bestselling " Crisis Management," has written a truly superb book on economic espionage. Using actual real world examples involving Avery Dennison / Four Pillars, Lucent Technologies, and Eastman Kodak, Fink has crafted a practical and easy-to-read book on how companies should protect their most valuable corporate asset - their trade secrets.

In the case involving Avery Dennison (the label and adhesives maker), Fink provides a detailed look at what caused a highly respected scientist at Avery Dennison to sell his company's trade secrets to a foreign competitor, namely Four Pillars of Taiwan. The ensuing court trial makes for interesting reading.

Using the example of Eastman Kodak and one of its former employees, Fink again discusses the motivation behind selling one's former employers' trade secrets for personal gain. This human element, which Fink writes about with great ease and clarity, is often overlooked in other books on economic and industrial espionage.

The chapter on the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 and the types of information worth protecting should be 'must reads' for every business manager. I would like to have seen another chapter on methods that companies can use to protect their trade secrets.

All in all, a solid book that provides useful information in an easy to read format.

Mark Robinson, author of "Beyond Competitive Intelligence: The Practice of CounterIntelligence and Trade Secrets Protection."

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-07-16

Have you ever had to decide whether to pick up that juicy Tom Clancy book or that stale, but important business one? Steven Fink splits the difference and solves your problem with this book that is half spy story, half business advice. Sticky Fingers works best as a thriller. As business advice, the book highlights the basic issues for U.S. companies fighting economic espionage, but falls short of serving up a complete playbook. The devil, as always, is in the details, and the specifics of the bookýs real-life cases sketch a more accurate picture of this particular devil than the generalized advice. If economic espionage is the elephant in the corner that your company has been pretending does not exist, we from getAbstract recommend Sticky Fingers as a starting point to finally taking action to protect yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The Global Cookie Jar.......2002-03-29

Occasionally, an author's concluding remarks shed a great deal of light on what that author's purposes are. That is certainly true of this book. Consider this brief excerpt from the Afterword in which Fink observes: "Acts of terror [e.g. such as those which occurred on September 11th] notwithstanding, economic espionage remains one of the most serious threats to our national security since the Cold War. Therefore, we ought to have seasoned generals leading, and weathered soldiers fighting, the good battles that need to be fought." However, with all due respect to the F.B.I. and to legislation such as the Economic Espionage Act [EEA], "...you still need to be your own best defense against espionage with proper internal education, training, and procedures" and under no circumstances "delegate the crisis management work for your company to the government. It is too important." This brief excerpt helps to explain why this book can be so valuable to decision-makers in global organizations.

Recent research studies have dentified issues of greatest concern to senior-level executives, following September 11th. The top five are mail processing (86%), travel (85%), protection of employees (79%), protection of infrastructure (75%), and risk assessment (71%). Obviously, there is widespread and quite legitimate concern about protecting human beings and physical property. However, as Fink eloquently explains, we must also be concerned about -- and take appropriate measures to protect -- information which is as important to the global economy as oxygen is to the human body.

As events on September 11th clearly indicate, even a country with resources such as those possessed by the United States cannot totally defend itself and its people against terrorists acts. However, because the U.S.A. remains the world leader in research, development, new technology, products, and trade secrets, organizations within the U.S.A. are high-profile targets and "economic espionage spies are still going to come after [them] and that only increases [the] global risk of economic espionage." As previously indicated, Fink's book examines the nature and extent of that potential risk, suggesting all manner of strategies and tactics to anticipate and then prepare for, as well as respond to, economic espionage because it is "a business crisis and should be treated as such."

Fink asserts that "Companies are under attack and at enormous risk every day. from the global threat of economic espionage, but the risk can and should be lowered and managed. Here's how." He organizes his material within two Sections and presents it in 29 interrelated chapters, followed by an Afterword in which he addresses the question, "EEA: Bear Trap or Mouse Trap?" To explain "here's how", he uses the largest economic espionage case ever tried in the United States -- Avery Dennison/Four Pillars -- from his vantage point as the lead crisis management expert for Avery Dennison. Fink guides his reader step-by-step through that seminal case, also also citing along the way relevant situations in other companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gillette, Kodak, Lucent Technologies, and MasterCard.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this book? Obviously decision-makers in global organizations. Also service providers to those organizations (e.g. attorneys, accountants, insurance underwriters, management consultants) as well as officials in governmental agencies who are directly or indirectly involved in economic espionage threats as well as acts. I also highly recommend Fink's previous book, Crisis Management, first published in 1986 but more relevant today than ever before. America is at greatest risk because it has the most worth stealing. Those with "sticky fingers" know that and so must those whose task it is to deny them.

5 out of 5 stars Wish We Had Read This Book Sooner!.......2002-03-29

"Sticky Fingers" is a highly valuable contribution to the ranks of important, must-read business books that sheds much-needed light on the theft of company trade secrets. At a cost to U.S. businesses of more than $250 billion a year, it is no wonder the author calls economic espionage the single biggest business crisis in America today. Every executive and manager should read this book pronto and follow the author's sound advice on protecting their company's trade secrets. My company was a victim of economic espionage and believe me, it hurt! I wish our management had read this book and followed Fink's pragmatic advice on how companies can protect their trade secrets and reduce their risk of economic espionage.

5 out of 5 stars Here's the Reality: This book tells it like it is!.......2002-03-28

It is obvious from reading "Sticky Fingers" that the author knows his subject, inside and out. The book has been thoroughly researched and well documented with a couple of hundred source notes to back it up, including interviews with former and current Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents, as well as many corporate executives. In addition, the author cites no less than three Avery Dennison attorneys who reviewed the manuscript for accuracy. People who plunk down good money for good books appreciate this kind of substantive research. Curiously, in the face of this rock-solid reporting there emerges a childishly cranky "reviewer" from Avery Dennison's Pasadena hometown. (Hmmm?) His - or her - bias seems simplistic and obvious. Having followed this particular case and the Avery Dennison company closely for many years, I have come across quite a few embarrassing incidents that the author might have included had he wanted - perhaps some discomfiting snafus involving the company's lawyers missing scheduled court dates, or company lawyers being publicly rebuked by the trial judge for having loose lips, or gaffes by self-doubting senior management and hyper-nervous internal PR flaks. Even though those incidents may have little to do with the important topic of Economic Espionage, it still might be interesting, if not amusing, if they became public one day. This could be a slippery slope for transparent individuals with personal agendas.

Like the author's previous book on crisis management, "Sticky Fingers" is a book that belongs on every business bookshelf. Company executives and managers would be wise to read it and learn how to prevent the theft of their valuable trade secrets...before they wind up as victimized as the hapless Avery Dennison.
