Far too simple.......2005-04-24

Might help you if you have just got out of college, but otherwise forget it. I skipped through in less than an hour: there is nothing in it. Like many readers of organisational books: still looking for the good one.

Short and Sweet, Gets to the Point.......2000-04-09

At first review of this book I was somewhat disappointed-the first and second chapters. The information seemed a tired carbon copy of all the other organizational, self help books on the market. It seemed like it was all common sense and elementary in nature. My goal was to get hot tips quickly without the fluff. As I read on, I found what I was looking for. Great tips on saving time by clever delegation and eliminating useless information, meetings etc. I found the tips on what I call "filtering" masses of information very helpful. This book was an easy read and the information was easily digestible. They key points are called out as captions in the book for easy reference. The amount of common sense this book regurgitates is fairly acceptable. These bits of common sense we may find irritating are probably the ones we continually forget to put into action. If you are short on time and need ideas quickly, this book is well worth the small investment.

A intriguing look at the formation and geology of the moon........1999-09-30

As a lay person, I thoroughly enjoyed this volume which offers a nice balance between readable narrative and in-depth geology information. I've always enjoyed reading Dr. Spudis's papers and volumes, and this is one of my personal favorites sitting on my space science and technology shelf.

Art Appreciation.......2007-03-08

Joy Adamson was also a talented artist as well as author. Having been trained in Europe, she posessed the skills of the old masters. Her lion sketches are very exceptional. A good source for reference for the young artist.

5+ Stars - A Must For Your Baseball Library .......2007-07-03

Yes, this is a book about baseball statistics and the numbers - but more than that, it discusses the people who made these statistics more important, starting with Henry Chadwick and onward to the present time - there is more biographical info on these people and how they developed their work with numbers - Schwarz doesn't go too deeply into the numbers but talks more about the people themselves - I think I learned more about Bill James in his chapter than I have in books specifically about him. A definite must have for your baseball collection.

This was a tough book for me to read It was a dry book I do love numbers, but Im not sure I love Books about numbers. Yet I got a lot out of this book Stats to value, and the history of Baseball stats.

Its full of names, Most you wont remember But you see how even early on Owners of teams learned to value what the numbers predicted. And later it goes on to show how the numbers became important to Free Agency. You learn one of the first to value Stats was and the computer was Sandy Alderson Who later nurtured Billy Beane

As a Kid I played some of the Games described in this book APba and one other. And I kept stats on those games Just like Bill james and some of the other stat freaks described in this book

So I saw myself in this book to a point except I didnt carry on with it............ Sigh, it would have been a great lifes work Maybe thats why the book was hard to read

If you are a baseball fan with any interest in statistics (and how can one be a baseball fan WITHOUT an interest in statistics), then this book is a must-have. Schwarz has written a fascinating book giving the history of baseball statistics, getting into the personalities, politics and trivia involved. A wonderful book!

Schwarz has a very good feel for the near-fanatics who populate the landscape of baseball numerics. Given the 150+ years of the sport's history, it's not an easy task to capture the flavor of times past and the role these characters played. Yet in a few hundred pages that's exactly what he does, while giving a concise picture of how numbers and their perception have radically changed the way baseball talent and teams are viewed.

Neither Stunning Nor Horrible, but Good History.......2007-08-19

The writing style of this book went smoothly enough. I found myself drifting away from the characters once or twice, but all in all, a decent read. There were several nice battle descriptions, but as the main character himself hardly lifted a finger with regard for battle, I had a hard time seeing it as a "key battle".
Easy to read. Nice historic content.

Scotland vs. England.......2006-02-11

Martin at the age of sixteen saves Robert the Bruce, King of Scots from the British and their men. The Bruce needs soldiers for his very small army. Martians mother told the Bruce that he could have Martian and his older brother Sean. Martian doesn't want to fight in any army, so the king has other ideas for him. Martin can read and write. This is very useful for the king. Sean, Martins older brother joins the army and uses his dead fathers spear. There are many battles in this book. The Scots win a lot of them. This rallies up more soldiers just as the Bruce wanted. Martin is sent on spy missions to find out what the British army is going to do or when they are going to attack. The Bruce wants to win this war badly, for his family's sake. His family was killed by the British, and they also took his daughter hostage in a castle. Winning the war also means Scotland's freedom. You will have to read the book to see if Scotland gets its freedom back, or if the Bruce gets his daughter back
I liked this book because it has a lot of action. There are battles when you have no idea what is going to happen. It keeps you thinking, or wondering what is going to happen. You could expect something to happen but the exact opposite happens. There is nothing that I didn't like about this book. It gets right into action right away and that is what I like.
I would want someone to read this book if they liked action / war books. Books that have hand- to- hand battles. This book just grab's your attention. I would recommend it to someone that loves battles. Not to someone who wants a book about a pretty pony. This book has some blood or brutal combat.

An Okay book.......2003-08-05

Of all action books I read, this was one of the best I have ever read. It is mostly fiction but touches upon history and true facts. It would recommended for ages 13 and over. Probably little kids would not like to read it for all the violence.

Many have said that this book's more for boys, but I'm a girl and I loved it, SO THERE! :P It reminds me a lot of America's own fight for independence. If you like historical fiction, Scotland, male heroes, or people with wits rather than brains, then you'll LOVE this book. I know I did.

The emerging consensus that institutions shape political and economic outcomes has produced few theories of institutional change and no defensible theory of institutional origination. Kiren Aziz Chaudhry shows how state and market institutions are created and transformed in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, two countries that typify labor and oil exporters in the developing worlds. In a world where the international economy dramatically affects domestic developments, the question of where institutions come from becomes at once more urgent and more complex. In both Saudi Arabia and Yemen, fundamental state and market institutions forged during a period of isolation at the end of World War I were destroyed and reshaped not once but three times in response to exogenous shocks. Comparing boom-bust cycles, Chaudhry exposes the alternating social and organizational origins of institutions, arguing that both broad changes in the international economy and specific forms of international integration shape institutional outcomes. Labor and oil exporters thus experience identical economic cycles but generate radically different state, market, and financial institutions in response to different resource flows. Yet as this study demonstrates, the fundamentals of the Kingdom's economy are relatively robust, as over three quarters of GDP is accounted for by the non-oil sector, and impressive modern industries have been established, notably in petrochemicals. The financial system functions well, and despite substantial government debts, there is low inflation and currency stability. The private sector increasingly drives the economy, although job creation has been insufficient to prevent rising youth unemployment. The development challenges Saudi Arabia faces are similar to those of other middle-income countries, and three decades of diversification have made the economy less unique than it was in the oil boom years of the 1970s.

The book aims to quantify and analyze how two water scarce but ideologically different Middle Eastern political economies, Saudi Arabia and Syria, addressed water sector investment between 1980 and 2000. The study examines how narrow-coalitions of decision-makers obsessed by impossible-to-achieve food self-sufficiency goals, lacking environmental consideration and safe political processes contributed to massively waste scarce resources and unsustainable water policies. The book shows that of Saudi Arabia's US$1,034 billion in oil revenues (1974-2001), 48% was spent on security, plus 10% on the ruling family. Nominal Per capita income dropped by 42% (1981-2000). Syria's per capita income dropped (1985-2000) by 17%, to US$1,200. Armaments' consumed (1970-1990) 13% of GDP. Agricultural investment was wasteful. Saudis produced wheat at five times the international price, depleted 300 billion m3 of mainly non-renewable groundwater and degraded aquifers' quality. 53% of Saudis have no municipal water connections. Syria's Government return on agricultural investment in 2000 was estimated at US$150 million loss. Aquifers' quality was degraded, leaving most urban households enduring acute water shortages.
