of all the bowling books i've flicked through, Jowdy's was the most contemporary for addressing the advances in today's game, and the content is geared towards bowlers who want to improve upon their existing knowledge and understanding of modern bowling techniques. it is not written for the beginner, and it assumes some prior knowledge to be built upon. i read the book in one sitting, and it consolidated all the info i had been gleaning from various sources on the net and from other bowlers and coaches over the years. As for the content, all the info is there, and the descriptions are sufficient if you can visualise what he is writing about, which isn't difficult with some of the basic drills he explains. Some of the tips in this book are invaluable and it is the first place i go to clarify some element of my game when it goes off the boil.

Biased in every way.......2005-10-15

What I really didn't like about this book is the constant rambling after starting the topic sentence in a paragraph. Which never concluded any information on the topic. Then instead of going over all the variations of an approach, he makes it quite clear that this should be the method for every bowler. In my opinion bowling involves individuals, and on mans view will not work for every bowler. It would be more helpful if he used his insight in bowling on how to work with the different variations that you can see in bowling.

Everything you shouldn't know........2005-07-22

Unfortunatly this book is very misleading. He often makes statements that go something like this..... Normally you would never use this kind of method and I would avoid it in most circumstances, but this one pro does it all the time, and so does this other guy. He then goes rambling on about all these different things that he just said you should never do and often leaves the basic concept he was addressing with a meager 4 sentences. We all get the idea that bowling involves your own litte variations, but its always based on a solid set of fundementals. I just wish he would have spent more time on the basics then the rare fundamental opposites.

Very, Very Disappointing.......2004-12-17

Jowdy may be a great teacher in person, but he is not a good explainer in print. His description of his "over and under drill," which he calls "one of the most effective keys to initiating a free armswing" and "a system I developed that has benefited many of my students, past and present," is described only in two brief, poorly written passages on different pages. In the first description, Jowdy says, "The drill is simple. It involves two imaginary bars. One imaginary bar is at the starting point and one is at the release point. Place one imaginary bar about four to six inches above the starting ball position. Push the ball over this bar, disengage all muscles in the forearm, and let the ball descend and swing with its own gravitational force. The under aspect of the over and under drill involves releasing under the other bar 12 inches above the foul line." That's it. The second description of the drill, in a shaded box on the following page, is different, though equally sketchy. This time, a second person is involved, there are no imaginary bars, and the ball descends but doesn't swing: "The over and under drill was the foundation for my coaching session with [professional bowler David] Ozio. I began by placing my fingers on his arm at the shoulder joint. I placed my right palm about 20 to 24 inches in a direct line of his right shoulder. I instructed him to hit my palm with the pushaway, relax all the muscles in his forearm, and let the ball descend from its own weight. We repeated this exercise several times until he sensed the flowing sensation of the ball from his shoulder." This drill is central to Jowdy's main instructional idea (the "free armswing"), yet there are no photographs or drawings of the drill, and no step-by-step instructions for performing it.
This shortcoming is characteristic of the entire book. Most of the photographs are unilluminating - almost all were shot head-on, so that arm and leg positions are confusingly foreshortened. Jowdy writes as though he assumes his readers already know what he's talking about and merely need to be reminded of whatever it was he told them during their most recent lesson.

Too many "business" books are heavy on war stories, light on principles or organizing theory. They are fun to read, but light on "so what?" Lewis and Bridger meld theory and observations from their consulting practice to offer an actionable framework for understanding the forces driving consumer preferences.

Anyone in consumer marketing will cull valuable insights from this enjoyable to read book. This book would also make an excellent supplement for an undergraduate or MBA Consumer Behavior course.

Shame that more from the USA have not yet discovered this pair. The first is passionate and multi-colored, the second is comprehensive and practical. Read together they give you a superb framework for delivering the kind of CRM and Experience that customers really buy.

Fascinating & full of interesting facts.......2001-11-08

This book was a really fascinating insight into why we buy things in the age of the Internet. It answers questions like: what do people really look for when making a buying decsion? What methods of selling work best with today's sophisticated consumers? and: Does market segmentation REALLY work? The photos weren't all that great, but otherwise its a pretty excellent book.

Is there really a "new" consumer?.......2001-10-15

Fundamentally, people don't change rapidly. Wants and needs, both material and emotional remain much the same over time. A rapidly changing workplace and technological innovation that result in tried and true human wants and desires manifesting themselves in different ways. Much as air pumped into a tire simply forms the shape of the tire, needs and wants of people are conforming to technological and social change.

"The Soul Of The New Consumer" discusses this phenomena based on extensive and impressive research by the authors. In the evolving marketplace, people seek timesavings, trust, and authenticity - things people have always sought but were previously more easily obtainable.
