        Book Description

The dynamic field of astrochemistry brings together ideas of physics, astrophysics, biology and chemistry to the study of molecules between stars, around stars and on planets. Astrochemistry: from Astronomy to Astrobiology provides a clear and concise introduction to this rapidly evolving multidisciplinary subject. Starting with the Molecular Universe, the text covers the formation of the elements, simple models of stars and their classification. It then moves on to draw on the theme of the Origins of Life to study interstellar chemistry, meteorite and comet chemistry as well as the chemistry of planets. Prebiotic chemistry and astrobiology are explored by examining the extremes of the biosphere on Earth, seeing how this may be applied to life in other solar systems.

Astrochemsitry assumes a basic familiarity with principles of physical and organic chemistry but no prior knowledge of biology or astrophysics. This innovative text incorporates results from the latest research and ground and space missions, with key images enhanced by a colour plate section.

This book will be an ideal text for an undergraduate course in Astrochemistry and an essential tool for postgraduates entering the field.

        2 out of 5 stars ambitious attempt.......2006-11-20

This book makes that ambitious attempt to cover a very large and diverse field. The author is clearly very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. There is a great deal of interest in this book, too. That said, there are numerous typos (e.g., a table showing the composition of the atmospheres of the inner planets has a blank column for oxygen; incorrect table citations in the text; tables and figures that do not entirely agree with the description of them in the text; errors in the formulas presented, etc). Further, the author covers some technical topics very briefly, making it hard to follow if you are using this text as your first introduction to the field. So, if you want to use this book as your introduction to the field, this book will have some interesting information for you, but may not be as helpful as more introductory books.

          Book Description

This work presents the general biological principles--and the chemical and physical concepts-- needed for an understanding of the post- and co-translational modification of proteins, a fundamental topic in the science of protein biochemistry and molecular biology. Examples of the different
types of modification reactions (glycosylation, phosphorylation, prenylation, etc.) are presented to illustrate specific points, and the book is intended to serve as a principles-based guide for studying the subject, whether in the classroom or research laboratory. In addition to its value as a
timely overview of a broad, vitally important area, the book can be used in advanced courses on signal transduction, enzymology, and protein chemistry, or as a supplementary text for biochemistry or molecular biology.

            Book Description

Wrestling as much as any sport requires a special type and level of courage. The arduous training, periodic weight cutting, and public arena for performing are challenges that intimidate all but a special breed of athlete. And that is not to mention the sport's very essence: facing off against an opponent who wants to do nothing less than dominate you physically, destroy you emotionally, and humiliate you mentally.

Wrestling Tough is a unique look at the "stuff" that has characterized the greatest competitors to ever take the mat. Award-winning author Mike Chapman first presents the attributes that serve as a common link among wrestling champions through the decades. From there he details how and when these attitudes, thoughts, and behaviors manifest themselves in the training room and in competition.

Even the best athletes and most successful coaches will find something new to add to their skill set. Let Wrestling Tough be your guide to a championship-level mindset.

This book is a great for all coaches not just wrestling. If you're a sucker for great stories to motivate your athletes then you'll love this book. It's loaded with examples of great athletes who understand that to succeed you have to work hard and train your mind and body.

5 out of 5 stars My 15 year old wrestler loved this book.......2007-04-04

This is an excellent choice for a high school wrestler. My son has increased his workouts since reading this book.

            5 out of 5 stars A must in your fighter's library.......2006-11-11

I just bought this book and read the first 5 chapters. So far, it is very inspiring and give stories of willing yourself to win, and what it take to seperate your self from the average person. Examples site stories of NCAA and Olympic wrestlers, Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program/ Dan Gable, UFC fighters like Dan Severn, Matt Hughes, Randy Couture, etc.

I've just started wrestling in my 40's. I did Judo and Jiu Jitsu in my 30's and Kickboxing/Kung Fu in my 20's. This is not only a great book to read and get pumped up before heading out to the gym, but I've recommitted to strive to be the best in my career and family life as well.

4 out of 5 stars Very inspirational but a little tiresome.......2006-03-08

I REALLY enjoyed reading "Wrestling Tough". It's very motivational and has helped me push myself a little harder. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. Firstly, there seems to be an endless supply of name dropping which gets tiresome after 100 pages or so. Also, he uses one "inspirational" story which I think of as being borderline retarded. On page 207 - 208 he describes Phil Peterson who recognized that he had something wrong with his arm, showed it to the trainer who essentially told him he was being a wimp. Mr. Peterson went back and finished practice. After the practice Phil had his arm x-rayed and found that he had broken it. Mr. Chapman uses this as an example of being tough... Yeah, sure, he's tough but he wasn't saving someone's life, or even in "the big game" he was simply practicing. An athlete who is so out of touch with his body that he can't figure this out and get to a hospital isn't tough, he's just dumb!

Aside from these issues it's a real kick a*s book that will motivate you to push yourself harder! I particularly want to recommend this book to those who are involved in combative sports.

            5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2005-10-25

Endorsed by the likes of Dan Gable ("Incredible reading!"), Mark Johnson ("Mike Chapman, the best writer in the history of the sport"), and Tom Brands ("a very motivational book"), I've been blown away by this book's motivating lessons of heroic battles and character building on the mat. This is a terrific book for fans, coaches, and wrestlers looking for inspiration and the techniques, tactics, and lessons for developing the X-factor for success.

It's great to have a book focusing on a sport from which participants and fans can learn so many of life's great lessons. Courageous stories from the Olympic, collegiate, and high school ranks ranging from icons like Dan Gable to underdogs like Kyle Maynard and Nick Ackerman are intertwined with tales about Muhammad Ali, Dick Butkus, Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong and many others to reveal that one's heart and mind hold the keys to success in life. Wrestling's demands (hard work, dedication, discipline, making sacrifices, and moving past setbacks) yield wrestling's rewards (character, confidence, mental toughness and the ability to face adversity) both on and off the mat. Recommended!

                          Book Description

After nearly five decades of insulation from world markets, state controls and slow growth, India embarked in 1991 on a process of liberalization of controls and progressive integration with the global economy in an effort to put the economy on a path of rapid and sustained growth. Despite major changes in the governments since then, the thrust of reforms has been maintained. According to the World Bank, only 19 out of 137 countries had more rapid growth than India's at over six percent per year in the 1990's.

In this study, Professors Srinivasan and Tendulkar analyze the economics and politics of India's recent and growing integration with the world economy. They argue that this process has to be nurtured and accelerated if India is to eradicate its poverty and take its rightful place in the global economic system. The topics covered include: historical roots and the political economy of India's late integration; domestic and external constraints on integration; external capital inflows including foreign direct investment; India's emerging comparative advantage in information technology industry and services, particularly computer software. The final chapter offers policy recommendations.

                            Book Description

The papers collected here were originally presented at a conference on multinational culture held at Hofstra University to explore the sociocultural impacts of the transformation to a global economy. Written by a distinguished group of contributors from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America, the essays address such questions as: Which particular changes have already taken root? How can we assess the efficacy of interventions by nation states and transnational authorities? How are the globe's resources being managed and how should they be managed in the future? Specific topics explored include government policies and their relationship to multinational activities, the formation and regulation of international capital, labor market segmentation and protectionism, managing multinationals without sacrificing ethical standards or profits, environmental impacts, and the language, legal, gender, and race dimensions of a global economy. Following a general introduction, the volume is divided into six groups of chapters, each of which examines a specific aspect of global transition. The contributors first look at the more general issues of global movements and global policies, with articles on critical social movements and the future of the global political economy, the evolution of multinational public policy towards business, and the implications of internationalization for development and welfare in the Third World. The next section describes globalization's reach into the arenas of monetary policy, banking, financing, and debt. Subsequent chapters look at the explicit and implict prejudices and differences that can undermine or enhance our global experience, present case studies of the contradictory imperatives between indigenous culture and globalization, affirm the importance of collective action in protecting labor and the environment, and consider the controversial and multifaceted nature of technology transfer. The diversity of topics and perspectives presented make this an ideal set of supplemental readings for advanced level courses in development economics, political economy, and international economics.
