Required Reading for Animal Lovers.......2001-12-05

I have been in the veterinary industry for over 15 years. Sadly, we often send condolence cards to owners when their pets pass away. Many years ago I started seeing a particular quote by Irving Townsend on these cards. It read, "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necesssary plan." It took over 15 years to stumble across the book that contains this quote, but it was worth the wait. I recommend it from the heart. A truly memorable experience.

Separate Lifetimes.......2001-03-15

Irving Townsend revisits the lives of some of his favorite animals and the ways they have touched him. Read about Prince, the horse saved from an auction, who blossomed and came into his own; the cat without a name who shared his life for a few months to recover from an injury. These are the characters, but he tells their stories as they affect him. It is his sense of loss that we feel and understand. An excellent book for anyone who has ever loved or lost a pet or companion animal.

Magnetism in binary stars is now an area of central importance in stellar astrophysics. Magnetic fields are believed to play a fundamental role in the mass transfer process in all close binaries. After an outline of the early work in binary stars, the book introduces the fundamentals of magnetohydrodynamics and binary star theory. The main areas of MHD in binary stars are then considered, including the AM Herculis systems, intermediate polars, X-ray binary pulsars, accretion disc magnetism, and stellar and disc winds. The unifying theme is the property of magnetic fields of redistributing angular momentum, and the associated stellar spin evolution. Although this is a rapidly expanding area, the fundamental problems discussed here are likely to remain relevant for future decades. A knowledge of physics to undergraduate level is assumed. The material should be of interest to observers as well as theoreticians. Although the book is mainly aimed at research workers, parts of the text could be useful for postgraduate courses in astrophysical fluid dynamics and binary star theory.

This book is a necessary source for a scientist who are studying astrophysics. But I have got some criticism.These are; 1- this book is very expencive 2- The pictures is less for visual and to imagine. I wanted to have a lot of pictures moreover these pictures may be colour.

But the content and the explain kind are good in this book. These ideas belong to me. Thank you for C.G.Campbell.

Excellent for a beginner but I am sure that even a seasoned pro will find good insights here. Pay special attention to the many knowledge "nuggets" that abound in this book. I started using a highlighter on these passages... they are that good!

I've been it doing all wrong.......2005-09-13

I've been hunting dove for years, albeit sparingly each season. This little book definitely showed me the error of my shooting ways, and I'm going to have find some time to shoot some clay pigeons to work on this technique. Don't expect to read this book and think that you can bag a bunch of birds the next day. Bruce Bowlen does a masterful job of describing and explaining this English techique of wing-shooting. It makes perfect sense to use this system for hunting birds, but my body and brain are going to need some time to program it in to where I can shoot this way. For being an average shooter, I'm more confident that I'll be able to bring home quite a few more birds next season, once I get the hang of this technique.

Good advice on developing consistent technique.......2004-11-20

In this useful little book, Bruce Bowlen lays out the English approach to wing-shooting. Many American shotgunners, he points out, are already comfortable with the rifle and thus try to transfer their rifle shooting skills to the shotgun. This is a mistake, he says. Shotgunning is a different animal altogether, relying on the shooter's natural sense of timing and ability to point. The English approach harnesses these instinctive abilities, combining them with solid, consistent technique to produce successful wing-shooting.

The book contains detailed guidelines on every aspect of shooting: stance, lead, follow-through, timing, etc. The chapter on gun fit was a bit tedious, taking up a third of the book. However, I'll probably revisit it next time I buy a shotgun. Overall, Bowlen's advice has been helpful to me and I'm sure I'll return to the book again.

Concise and Informative.......2003-02-25

Great practical advice for advanced and beginning shooters. It's geared more toward the bird hunter than the clay shooter, however it has some great information for clay shhooters as well.

Enjoyable..........2000-05-08

It was interesting to see Liz and Enid reacting to a 'changed' Amy. I liked the way the book conveyed Enid's jealousy of Amy but, also at the same time, she was portrayed as being insecure and threatened by the return of Liz's 'best friend'. I liked the 'showdown' at the party when Amy keeps hassling poor old Christopher for a ride, when he just wants to be with Enid. I did feel a bit sorry for Liz, especially since she was caught between them.

It's just too bad Amy changed. I used to like her a lot. But now that she has grown to be like Jessica, I am totally disappointed. Well, anyway, people changed. I guess it's good. At least Liz found out that Amy is no longer the same Amy who had been her best friend. Lucky for her, she had Enid. This book is quiet good.

An optimistic view .......2006-01-28

I read Peter Schwartz book on the "The Art of the Long View". I was expecting sometime like that.What he suggested was to take two of the most important variables and make four world models from them. If so what we have here is the optimistic scenario.

Most futuristic models in my experience fail as they attempt to make a long term model on previous short term results. As it was written in 2000 just after the fall of communism in Russia and the Asian meltdown and before 911, it exaggerates the melt down in Asia and ignores the military totally.

In this scenario we have only globalism and progress.

This was a fun book to read. If you want to be optimistic about the world, read this book. The book is about the global economy growing, and how humans will benefit from such economic growth.

Many problems can can be addressed by economic growth, while some problems are created by such growth. The economic growth is created by technology and globalization, as are the problems created.

There are rules to follow to sustain the economic growth, and the book outlines ten such rules.

If you are worried about global problems like climate change,
terrorism, or poverty, read this book. You will learn that these
problems will worsen if we're not careful. You will also learn that these problems can be minimized if we change our way of thinking.

Well, these guys pretty much had it all down. The nation-state is dead! We're all living in one big, friendly wired community! The Dow will keep rising, minus some small bumps! The gap between rich and poor will narrow! The information economy will make us all live longer!

And -- hey, that plane is flying awfully close to the World Trade Cent.. -- oh, never mind. Just put on your virtual-reality goggles, and keep on buying stocks. Everything's gonna be great.

Do I really need to persuade you that his book is nonsense?.......2001-08-26

During the nonsense years of the bubble, most people who fell for the hype never went through a boom and bust period. Sure, some had lived through busts, but they may not have truly experienced it, and therefore had no history to learn from. My opinion is these three "prosnosticators" probably fall in this category. I remember telling an older dot com "exec" that I didn't believe technology acceptance moves as fast as the media was hyping. The response I got back is typical of what this book spews out. Unblinding optimism based on limited experience and with total disregard to macro economic and socialogical trends. It is my humble opinion that these guys are not aware of wave theory and should study up on it. I do believe that science, technology, and globalization will bring good things. However, I am humble enough to look back at history to give me small bits of wisdom on how to proceed into the future. Good things will come, but they will come over a greater time periods than what hypsters believe. In our future, there will still be boom and bust cycles. We have not all become superhumans just because the tech industry plays a bigger role in the economy and in our lives. Our minds are capable of dreaming up extraordinary scenarios faster than our beings are able to make them happen and accept them. Save your money, don't bother with this book. Reading this book is like accepting wisdom from the likes of Henry Blodget or Mary Meeker. Look to people like Buffet and Greenspan for wisdom not a bunch of rubes.

It isn't going to happen.......2001-04-19

This book, while entertaining in parts, is simply too good to be true. The seemingly near-perfect existence posited is so sickly-sweet that it is difficult to read at times. I also found the journal type entires interrupted the flow rather than enhanced the message. It smacks of Kubrick's vision of the year we are currently in.
