          Book Description

Interest in the problem of interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas arose decades ago. Initially, this was closely related to the discovery of radio emission from the Sun and Galaxy which alerted theoretical radio astronomers to the problem of the origin of extra-terrestrial radio emission. It has been found that the observed radio emission from cosmic sources is generated by virtue of the mechanisms which work mainly in plasma (an ionized gas). Recently, the theory of generation and propagation of radiation in astrophysical plasmas has outgrown its parent domain of theoretical radio astronomy and is being successfully applied to other fields, such as high-energy astrophysics. General results obtained in this field may also help to better understand the complicated phenomena in laboratory plasmas on the Earth. At the same time, analysis of interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas under extreme conditions (strong magnetic fields of white dwarfs and neutron stars or strong gravitational fields in the vicinity of black holes) stimulates the development of plasma physics as a whole. In fact, the physics of plasma under extreme conditions in space is a new branch of fundamental science. The monograph contains the description of physical processes involved in interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas. It comprises the reasonable minimum necessary for understanding the emission and propagation of electromagnetic waves in astrophysical plasmas; without this minimum one could not succeed in interpreting the results of a number of astronomical observations. Audience: This monograph will be useful for graduate and post-graduate students and young scientists as a textbook on plasma astrophysics and the issues of plasma physics dealing with radiation. At the same time, the book can be used by specialists on astrophysics, radio astronomy and plasma physics.

              Book Description

Sooner or later any outdoor enthusiast will need more than trail markers for guidance. This best-selling manual--now thoroughly revised and updated--is designed for anyone who wants to chart a course in the wilderness: hiker, backpacker, snowshoer, skier, fisherman, or hunter. Step by step, it teaches the skills that enable you to answer the vital questions: Where am I now? Which way do I head to reach my destination? How far is it? And how long will it take me to get there?
Starting with the basics of interpreting maps and orienting by compass, the book proceeds clearly through the more advanced mysteries of land navigation: measuring distances and estimating travel times; determining and adjusting for
local declination around the globe; using an altimeter to add the dimension of height to one's position; and navigation by means of sun and stars. In updating the late W. S. Kals's text, coauthor Clyde Soles focuses on the latest developments in technology and equipment. Readers learn, for example, that through digital mapping software, one can order the exact area desired, at any scale, and print it on waterproof paper. Soles also surveys the popular new handheld GPS units and instructs in their use, and provides an overview of marine navigation for the growing sport of sea kayaking. Visuals include a full-color foldout topographic map for reference and practice, plus dozens of helpful drawings and photographs.
Though much has changed, one thing certainly hasn't: the new edition of Land Navigation Handbook retains the solid information, spirit, and lively humor that made it a classic among outdoorspeople everywhere.

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars not for a beginner.......2007-09-08

I don't know anything about land navigation and hoped that this book would help me. But it does not explain many of the concepts, and it doesn't even have a glossary. It has a topographic map in the back, but it is hard to follow the references to it. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent guy, but I've had trouble learning from this book.

              4 out of 5 stars Not for a "beginner".......2007-02-15

There is too much information in this book, much more than what is needed for the average "away for the long weekend" traveller.
It covers all the info. you need to know, even though at times it assumes that the reader is already knowledgeable about the subject of navigation.

1 out of 5 stars Was this an instrution manuel or ...?.......2007-02-05

As a book that holds itself out to be a handbook as well as a guide to the subject of maps and compasses, it fell woefully short in instruction on either.

              1) There was virtually no mention of terrain features. One of the most important things to understand on a topo map are the terrain features and how you can use them and the map alone to navigate a parcel of land if you know your terrain features well enough. This is a must for any book of land navigation.

              2) Section, re-section and modified resection. While modified resection was briefly mentioned, the first two were not. These three methods of positioning must be understood to successfully find a particular position on the map.

              3. The lensatic compass, while an old model, is still utilized because it is one of the most well designed models ever built. Why was it not mentioned in the section on compasses?

              4. The section on maps had no reference to the Military Grid Reference System.

Those were the primary complains, but there was nothing of notable value, either.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable instructional reference.......2007-01-07

This updated second edition of LAND NAVIGATION HANDBOOK: THE SIERRA CLUB GUIDE TO MAP, COMPASS & GPS could also have appeared in either our Sports or Military columns, but deserves mention here to be sure the widest possible audience receives notice of the completely updated edition including new text by Clyde Soles. Here is a pocket-sized 'bible' of outdoors survival, providing basic keys on everything from using maps and compass to using an altimeter, navigating by kayak on lakes, understanding GPS navigation and how to choose and use a GPS unit, and even how to navigate by moon and sun alone. Photos, drawings, and a fold-out topographic map provide plenty of visual illustration and examples of the details and make for an invaluable instructional reference both in the field and for at-home study.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for using maps, compass & GPS effectively!.......2006-08-29

The second edition of Land Navigation Handbook (2005) is the best book I have read on the subject of navigation. The explanations and expert guidance on choosing and using a compass, the distinction between magnetic and true north, choosing and using a GPS unit, how GPS works and its limitations (not just for north America but for other parts of the world as well) are definitely worth reading. I have learned a lot from this book. The book is not for land navigation only, it is also an indispensable aid for marine navigation. I sincerely think every sailor should have one in his sailboat (it measures only 8" x 4.5" x 0.5") as a reference book.

                            Book Description

In the Web world, nothing will ever be the same. The Internet is changing the balance of power between consumers, the companies they buy from, and the social and political institutions they interact with. Corporations and institutions have only a small window in which to learn new rules of engagement, or risk being barred from the game. Veteran technology journalist Tom Murphy forecasts the changes to come in shopping, finance, media, healthcare, entertainment, and gadgetry. Supplementing his informed predictions are conversations with visionary business leaders such as Barry Diller, Andy Grove, and Jerry Yang.

5 out of 5 stars What the Net Will Be When It Finally Grows Up!.......2003-09-25

Wow! It's great to find a book that takes such an intelligent, long-term view of the Internet. As we know now, it wasn't all about the dot.com's that have now gone bust. And what is happening now is only that -- what is happening now. In "Web Rules," the author looks at what the Internet is likely to become as it matures a decade from now -- and it's something very different from what we've seen to this point. So far, he looks like he's on target. His insights, and those of the luminaries he interviews, show a very deep understanding of media and, most especially, how the Internet is likely to change the rules of business. We're already seeing some of this, but as the book points out, there's lots more to come in the next decade. This book is a roadmap for the curvy superhighway ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Particularly relevant right now.......2001-06-02

This book is easy and entertaining to read , really informative without being over-techno or relying on business jargon like "visioning" and "mission statement." The author's insights are refreshing, explaining in concrete terms that companies need to compete and keep their customers, not just put something on the Web and hope it floats. The insights on customer expectations of the Web are particularly relevant, and particularly so right now as people in the Web business are learning sobering truths about business realities. Much of what Murphy writes about, and his interviewees talk about, is coming to pass.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for aspiring e-commerce entrepreneurs........2000-08-04

This survey of how the Internet is changing how customers make choices provides interviews with a range of modern thinkers and social workers; from Paul Erdman and Mike Bloomberg to Trip Hawkins and Jerry Brown. Web Rules is a fascinating survey of market forces and Internet operation impacts upon them.

                            4 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2000-07-03

this book can easily be read in one sitting. the writing style is quite entertaining probably owing to the fact that the author is a seasoned journalist. as the book imparts time and time again, the customer returns with a vengance as he sets the web rules of the net. with information readily available, the customer now holds the power. the book tells of how the merger mania has put the mom and pop stores out of business. how these stores really knew the meaning of individualized customer service. but times are changing and the forces of the new economy are upon us. now we have virtual malls and the customer is once again treated like a king. the book has also other interesting insights on the effect of the network economy such as its chapters on gadgets(mobile phones, bots), interactivity, finance, and medicine. it ends with interviews which read like a whos who in the e-conomy such as jerry yang, andy grove and mike bloomberg. although its a good read, for those who are more interested in making it easier for the customer to do business with you(customer focused strategies) you may be more inclined to pick up the customer.com book of patricia b.seybold.

5 out of 5 stars great for anyone running an online business.......2000-06-17

Web Rules does a great job of focusing on the importance of understanding consumer's expectations in running an online business. I've worked at a number of e-commerce and consumer web services over the past few years, and the biggest mistake I've seen is either not understanding what the consumer wants or not listening to consumer feedback after launch. Especially since the web really has changed what consumers want and expect from a business. Competition is brutal and consumers can find the best prices instantly through shopping engines, so businesses must understand their customers in order to compete. This book did a really nice job helping me step back and get a big picture view of how customers interact with businesses online.

                              Book Description

What are the forces that are driving firms and industries to globalize their operations? This volume explores how specific industries have organized their global operations through case studies of seven manufacturing industries: garments and textiles, automobiles and auto parts, televisions, hard disk drives, flat panel displays, semiconductors, and personal computers. Based on long-term research sponsored by the Sloan Foundation, the chapters provide readers with a nuanced understanding of the complex matrix of factor costs, access to inimitable capabilities, and time-based pressures that influence where firms decide to locate particular segments of the value chain.

The book examines globalization within the context of five factors affecting locational decisions: advances in transportation and communication; the clustering of knowledge assets; the drive to reduce cycle times; the commodification of existing products; and the relative advantages of proximity to customers. The case studies are framed by Paul Deguid’s Preface on the significance of power in value chains and Bruce Kogut’s conclusion on the importance of knowledge in locational decisions. Together, the chapters reveal a remarkable diversity of responses across industries to these forces, and suggest that any understanding of globalization must appreciate this diversity.

This volume is ideal for both MBA and undergraduate students studying the location of economic activities by multinational firms.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and useful travel guide when doing business in Japan.......2003-01-10

This is a unique and interesting business travel guide and gives a lot of value for its pocket size. As a former military attache to Japan, I was impressed by tips it offered in areas that even seasoned Japanophiles struggle with such as the fine art of giving presents and expert dining etiquette that goes way beyond the standard business cards and bows. The reader gets a rare peek into the minds and hearts of the Japanese people. It's also a sociological and cultural study in value-shifts that are occurring in today's Japan and business changes in foreign investment policies and deregulation. A lot of emphasis has been placed on behavior and language in interpersonal relations, even to the extent of how many seconds to wait before responding to a question! Clear and easy-to-use charts are an excellent feature. The book also begins with a humorous quiz on Japanese famous figures, history and food, and shows how we really do need this new book and the information it provides. Examples of advice are: "When you get in trouble, apologize profusely" and what to do if you're staying near an active volcano. This guide is easy to read and helps us understand the Japanese character and way of thinking. It's also very enjoyable. We loved it! Thank you Brian and Sue!

Because of my work as an interculturalist, I enjoy reading various books on cultural preparation for Americans, et al, going overseas. This book is by far the best quality to prepare a business traveller or even a tourist for life in Japan. It is concise, yet informative, and supplies plenty of pertinent anecdotes which assist the reader in understanding values which we, as Americans, typically find too foreign to comprehend.
