The physics of extended systems is a topic of great interest for the experimentalist and the theoretician alike. There exists a large literature on this subject in which solutions, bifurcations, fronts, and the dynamical stability of these objects are discussed. To the uninitiated reader, the theoretical methods that lead to the various results often seem somewhat ad hoc, and it is not clear how to generalize them to the nextthat is, not yet solvedproblem. In an introduction to the subject of instabilities in spatially infinite systems, Pierre Collet and Jean-Pierre Eckmann aim to give a systematic account of these methods, and to work out the relevant features that make them operational. The book examines in detail a number of model equations from physics. The mathematical developments of the subject are based on bifurcation theory and on the theory of invariant manifolds. These are combined to give a coherent description of several problems in which instabilities occur, notably the Eckhaus instability and the formation of fronts in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. These phenomena can appear only in infinite systems, and this book breaks new ground as a systematic account of the mathematics connected with infinite space domains.

This book changed my life........2004-08-27

I first saw this book in the late 60s, I was young, it expanded my universe. Together with all of John Muir's work, others of Thoreau, Ansel Adams and a book named On The Loose, the effect was complete. In our cynical times what these artists have to say is even more important. A beautiful work.

A Book for the Soul.......2000-10-25

The photography in this book is spectacular! It is what you expect from a Sierra Club book. Put together with wonderfully thoughtful and though-provoking texts by various writers, this book can give even a hard-core city slicker pause. Wilderness at its best....words to salve the heart.

A must for wilderness enthusiasts........2005-06-02

I rarely write online reviews, but I just couldn't help myself for this book. I received it as a gift from a friend who had been treasuring it on his shelf for decades. In 1962 the Sierra Club paired the photography of Porter with quotes from Thoreau to produce a magical experience that carried me away from concrete and exhaust to connect with life's rhythmic continuum. I highly recommend going to the effort of obtaining a copy of this long out-of-print collector's edition instead of wasting your money on one of the recent, less nostalgic, printings.

very informative book with great diagrams and pictures. even though parker is a lefty the book really explains bowling from both hands. one of the better books i have read so far.

As with all things, the key is in the title. This book does a sound job in giving you the fundamental keys to mastering your game. For those looking to perfect their game, look to an established, reputable coach. As with all text books in learning, the basics are given and it is up to you to apply them under the watchful eye of someone who has already ascended to the top. People graduate from programs every day with all the info and skills required to be the best at what they are about to do, but they still train with others who have been doing the same job in order to perfect, mold, tweak what they have learned in the textbooks and classroom.

This book provides illustrations and keys that you need to master your game. What you do with that infomation will determine whether or not you truly master your game.

Parker is awesome.......2001-10-29

Just saw Parkers book for the first time and it is a great book.The pictures are alone worth the price of the book. Having met Parker is class with a capitol C. Parker is the nicest person you will ever meet. I can see why this book is written so well it does come across as being cocky or do it my way or the highway. I feel this book took time to write and is written very well. Hope you feel the same way as well after you read the book. Keep winning out on tour Parker.

Outstanding photography, Useful insights.......2001-01-14

Worth the price just for the photographs. Unlike other books on bowling, each of the 160 8-1/2 x 11 pages is in full glossy color (watch out for fingerprints on the paper!), including many excellent photos and graphics. The layout makes it easy to flip through the pages and get a feel for the sport of bowling without even reading the text.

As for the subject matter, this book is also very different. The two best books on bowling that I'm familiar with (Par Bowling and Knowledge is the Key) take a systematic approach. This book reads more like a personal lesson on bowling by Parker Bohn III, along with other top professional bowlers. Of course it is also more up-to-date, focusing on the issues that are important to today's bowlers.

The book's coverage is broad, including equipment, strategy, and the mental game, along with fundamentals and an interesting history of the sport. The section on spare shooting is particularly useful, since it focuses on the hard-and-straight method used by most top players, as opposed to the strikeline-relative approach presented in other books.

The downside is that the discussions do not contain the kind of detail that would be necessary to learn to bowl from the text alone, making this book best suited for intermediate players. Then again, the best way to learn to bowl is from a coach, not a book. Advanced bowlers may learn a few things too, but are probably better served by specialized publications such as "Bowling this Month" magazine.

Finally, this is a must-have for left-handed bowlers. It is the first book I have seen that gives lefties equal treatment in discussions and diagrams, instead of telling southpaws to "just reverse it in their heads" (Parker is a lefty himself).

Bottom line: if you are looking for a textbook on bowling, this is not it. But, if you want to learn about the sport as it is played by the best in the world, buy this book!

ok for beginners.......2000-12-16

book is ok for beginners. if you have been bowling for a few years and need help to get to a higher level, find a coach or wait for the next book. i am a level 1 junior coach and i am always looking for new material. this is not it. the only book that i have read that is close is kouros's par bowling, but it is very technical.

Good, Recommend It!.......2001-08-14

This was the first Party Of Five book I read (I don't watch the show). It was very good and recommend it for teen readers. In the book, Bailey decides to hire a waitress but she keeps screwing up by mixing of people's orders and stuff. Now, insted of firing her, he decides to flirt a little. She quits later and files a lawsuit against him for harassment. I can't tell you the rest, but I suggest you read it!

Superficial Coverage.......2001-02-01

This book is a good primer for those unfamiliar with the workings of China's economy and the reforms of the last decade that have fuelled China's growth. It is badly dated now (no fault of the authors) due to the Asian financial crisis. The biggest disappointment is that is deals very little with the book's supposed topic, the role of the overseas Chinese. The last half of the book doesn't even mention them! (well, barely...)

Excellent book but very dated.......2000-03-21

This book is a classic, but the Asian crisis has dated it badly. Also, the author has much anecdotal matter to back up his story, but he did not have intimate access to the Overseas Chinese top managers and this shows. For an intimate account of how the networks operate, and how strategic decisions are made I strongly recommend "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. to supplement this book.

This book needs immediate revision.......1998-01-19

The style of this book is a bird's-eye view gleaned primarily from newpaper reports (as judged by the bibliographic citations). It begins with a delineation of the most visible Overseas Chinese entrepreneur "families." Then it abruptly swerves into an anecdotal rambling about Mainland China's boom economy and how one can not do business there without buying favors from Communist Party officials or from the People's Liberation Army. The reason this book needs a new edition is that its publication predated current "Asian" scandals. One of the ("Indonesian") families showcased by the authors has been in the news for the last year as being the alleged bankroller for "Asian" connected illegal Democratic campaign contributions via bag people who do not appear to have the means to make $100,000 contributions. Likewise, this book reveals why it should not surprise the American Public that the President of the United States has met with arms dealers alleged to be in the employee of the People's Liberation Army. The authors' narrative enables me to make more educated guesses about the real mission of restaurantuer Charlie Tri and the top security clearance trade specialist John Huong. I am rating this book as "average" because it strikes me as a thinly disguised public relations effort to promote more U.S. direct investment in Mainland China "before we miss the boat." It clearly is not a scholarly effort. Read this book for a quick intro to the players, but move on to books with more depth: this arena is important to understand (whatever your world view or prejudices).
