        Book Description

Cassini At Saturn – Huygens Results brings the story of the Cassini-Huygens mission and their joint exploration of the Saturnian system right up to date. Cassini entered orbit around Saturn June 2004 so this update includes 8 months of scientific data available for review, including the most spectacular images of Saturn, its rings and satellites ever obtained by a space mission. As the Cassini spacecraft approached its destination in spring 2004, the quality of the images already being returned by the spacecraft clearly demonstrated the spectacular nature of the close-range views that will be obtained. The book contains a 16-page colour section, comprising a carefully chosen selection of the most stunning images to be released during the spacecraft’s initial period of operation.

The Huygens craft, released by Cassini, parachuted through the clouds of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, in January 2005. David Harland tells the exciting story of the this craft’s journey to the surface of one of the most enigmatic bodies on the Solar System, the only moon to have a dense atmosphere and possibly lakes of liquid gas at -190ºC on its surface. Titan is considered to be an early Earth in deep freeze, possibly with the building blocks of life in its atmosphere. There will undoubtedly be enormous interest in the first results and images of Titan’s surface, and this book is the first incisive summary of this groundbreaking material.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average reader.......2007-08-13

It may be true that this book contains a lot of information about Saturn and its moons and all the other findings in the outer solar system, however, the writing style is quite complicated for someone that isn't thoroughly experienced in the field of astronomy.

The writing style is extremely technical and overly detailed. For example, there are several sections in the book where the author describes each specific part on the space probe that NASA has built using highly technical terms that only a veteran astronomer or NASA scientist would be familiar with. The average reader will get lost quite fast in all the technical explanations and get quite frustrated. Here is a typical example of the style of writing that the author uses:

"The Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) did not have a lens, it had a series of linear apertures set in line which served as a collimator to produce a field of view 2 by 15 milliradians, then a diffraction grating illuminated a linear array of 128 detectors, each of which measured the brightness on a 1024 point scale to measure the range of 50-170 nanometers in a spectral resolution of 1 nanometre. It was to investigate ultraviolet glows in interplanetary space and in ionospheres, and use limb sounding measurements of the extent to which insolation was absorbed during solar occultations to profile the chemical composition of the upper regions of planetary atmospheres...."

If you can figure out such details then this book is for you. He uses this kind of writing throughout the majority of the book and it gets quite frustrating to try to decipher all the technical jargon.

Furthermore, the author fails to focus on perhaps the most important part of the subject matter, the planets and the moons themselves. He spends so much time going into every little detail of how NASA actually sends its probes to their locations that you get lost trying to figure out what he was trying to explain to begin with. He constantly uses terms only familiar to physics and chemistry majors.

If you are looking for a more amateur-friendly book about astronomy then I recommend checking out David Grinspoon. His writing is a lot less technical and he focuses on the important big picture instead of letting his readers get lost in all the insignificant details that are only important to a scientist, not an amateur astronomy enthusiast.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Update.......2007-06-05

This is a new edition of Harland's fine 'Mission to Saturn', adding
100 new pages of Cassini findings through summer 2006, including of
course the results of the Huygens encounter at Titan. As usual, a
handy, comprehensive volume, nicely written and illustrated. (There is no point in buying Mission to Saturn now, since its contents
        are included in CaS:HR)

2 out of 5 stars A quality publication but not for everyone..........2005-11-20

Living in Costa Rica, I purchased Robert L. Dresser's: "Field Guide to the Orchids of Costa Rica and Panama" to help me to identify the orchids in the wild, in my collection and in the collections of others.

While I have in fact been able to use the book to this end, this publication doesn't give up its answers easily and I couldn't recommend it to anyone who gets frustrated easily, is intimidated by technical terminology or to anyone who has the slightest propensity for impatience.

Identifying an orchid with this book requires one to answer one to a great many questions about the plant you are trying to identify. Each answer directs you to another page and set of questions. Sometimes, there are black and white line drawings next to a set of questions to help you make your selection. Eventually, the query ends and the scientific name (though not an image) of the orchid is finally revealed.

        An example is:

        A. Lip ovate, longer than wide, reflexed, forming a 45 degree angle (this is followed by a series of cryptic abbreviations and measurements for things like size, habitat and colors) .............this apparently identifies this particular orchid as: Epidendrum mantis-religiosae

If this does not sound like your orchid, you are presented with option B.

        B. Lip subcircular to kidney-shaped, not markedly longer than wide, not reflexed.....(at which point you are referred to another page, set of questions et. al.)

More often than not, one finds oneself flipping a great many pages unable to actually identify the plant. One proceeds through the query wondering if they actually understood the proceeding questions and if they are in fact on the right track. Many of my searches ended in failure and frustration.

Further, after all of this effort and technical analysis, there isn't the reward of a picture waiting at the end to provide a positive identification. Therefore, one ends up looking at the scientific name wondering if you have in fact identified your orchid. I found it to be rather unrewarding.

While there are in fact color plates, they represent about 1% of the orchids described in the book.

If one were a student or professor or biology or botany I would recommend this book. If one is dedicated amateur who is willing to put forth a lot of time effort towards familiarizing oneself with technical terminology I would also recommend this book.

For the amateur who hopes to identify orchids hailing from Costa Rica and Panama I would suggest looking for a user-friendlier alternative.

You learn a bit of how, but not all of it.

Then you go off and DO it yourself.

Great writing style, good illustrations, very readable. Well worth the price if you're interested in sailing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Book for Sail Making Theory.......2005-09-15

I purchased this book with the sole purpose of understanding sail theory, with an very distant goal of one day making my own sail. The book is written in a very understanding manner, and explains more complex procedures in a precise and encouraging manner. The book introdues you to the tools and procedures through making a small bag to carry your tools. This is a great book for the money, and I highly encourage anyone wanting to learn about the different procedures for making various sail configurations. However wonderful this book is, I would not recommend it if you are wanting to build your own high-performance sails, as it is geared towards sailing in a more relaxed and functional manner.

I found the book particularly good at explaining different sail functions, options, and layouts. It also greatly clarified the principal of CE.

        5 out of 5 stars Sail Maker's Apprentice.......2005-07-20

An exhaustive work on making sails. The author is maticulous and does not cut corners. Makes good reading not only as a handbook, but also as a history of sail making.

5 out of 5 stars Helping you to be self sufficient.......2003-12-04

This wonderful book isn't intended to teach you about modern, complex, computer designed sails, or how to make them. Marino wants you to be able to repair and maintain your sails yourself. He wants you to understand how to sew a flat tabling, how to stick a cringle, how to sew on a boltrope. If you are adventurous, he will tell you how to completely make a sail for your boat, one that will last many, many years, but frankly very few people will ever make their own sails. But starting with a great beginner's project, the ditty bag, he shows you that traditional sailmaking is just a collection of readily understandable tasks, and then the repetition of those tasks, done with care and patience. Highly welcome and recommended in this age of multiple laminate fabrics and computer designed sails cut out by lasers. If that's what sailing is to you, look elsewhere.

Slash, chop, stab, kill with swords and axes--and yell for joy! In this rousing, historically authentic and appropriately gory novel about the Vikings, Michael Cadnum continues his exploration of cultures of violence (his other books include Redhanded, a contemporary novella about the brutal world of amateur boxing, and The Book of the Lion, set during the crusades). Cadnum, one of our finest young adult writers, vividly recreates not only the outer trappings of Viking society, but the psychological mindset of a people whose values, myths, songs, and sagas centered on murderous seafaring raids.

Seventeen-year-old Lidsmod, however, is not so sure about this business of spectacular killing, although he does his best not to show it. He is on his first sea raid, aboard the new ship Raven, on the way with the other men of the village of Spjothof to plunder the English coast. Rumors have led them to a "gold fortress" or abbey, where 13-year-old Wiglaf is learning the healing arts under the protection of the good abbot Aethelwulf. Tension builds through the alternating perspectives of the two boys, as the attackers draw near and the victims huddle in dread, only to be cut down and chopped like meat by the wild Torsten and the other Vikings. Wiglaf is taken captive, and his compassionate healing of the Vikings' wounds plants a seed of understanding in Lidsmod's mind that leads to another compassionate but costly deed. Young teens, especially boys, will relish this thrilling and exquisitely crafted story. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

              Book Description

Like all the men in his Norse village, seventeen-year-old Lidsmod was trained to be a warrior. Without their voyages to distant lands‹and without their battles for treasure‹the people of his village could not survive. Fighting men, Lidsmod knows, must show no feelings. But something stirs in him when he is assigned to watch over Wiglaf, a thirteen-year-old captive with a withered arm. Wiglaf can¹t stop the slaughter of his Anglish people, and yet he still has the power to heal. Brilliantly combining scenes of bloody frenzy with poignant moments of keen introspection, this splendid historical novel poses haunting questions: What is the full cost of battle? What is the true test of courage. In this beautifully crafted novel, Michael Cadnum has vividly captured the richly textured world of the Norse peoples of long ago.

1 out of 5 stars Historically inacurate, innapropriate for young readers.......2002-04-21

This book purports to be an accurate description of viking raiders in, attempting to show their thoughts and feelings, and give us insight into their culture. Unfortunately the author has not done his research. He merely reinforced old stereotypes and borrowed heavily from common misconceptions of vikings in order to write a book that misrepresents the norse tradition. For example, he graphically describes the making of a "bloody eagle", a horrible mutilation of a man. Todays scholars have now proved "bloody eagles" to be a complete fiction invented by a couple of Christian writers (who must have had sick sadistic imaginations).
Rape is also a common topic of the book, and this too is an old innacurate stereotype. What viking has time to rape a woman when hes fighting for his life? In addition, vikings abucted people to hold them ransom, so is it likely he would rape a ransom victim, thereby making his prisoner worthless to her family? No. Furthermore, when the vikings kept prisoners as slaves, they did not see them as expendable, and did not rape them with impunity as many believe. Viking tels even tell of Free men, Norsemen, wooing and courting slave women in their villages.
Women even went on raids with the men, were sometimes leaders in the raids, and participated in the all aspects of Norse life.
So near as we can tell, the fortunate Norse simply were allowed by their culture to live such uninhibited lives that they didn't need to be sadistic, and did not tie together sex and violence. The men did not hate and fear women, and so had no need to either rape them, or keep them in weaponless subjection.
Despite his historically innacuracy, the book simply is not appropriate for young readers, boys or girls. It is given from the perspective of the men in the story, and makes no distinction between what is approriate behavior and what is not. It speaks of young boys getting drunk on a regular basis, as just a part of life. It makes mention of sex and young men "mounting" girls, women, etc., and raping other villagewomen. It is violent and perverse, and gives no context for the not yet discerning young reader to be able to sort through the behaviors of these people, and make a distinction between what is right and wrong.
              In short, THIS BOOK [STINKS]!

              5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2001-08-08

What a great read for anyone of any age! Author Cadnum works magic with his words in this realistic coming of age story. Brought together by a Norse raid on England in 794 AD, two sympathetic boys learn grim adult truths about "heroic" warriors. This impressive novel offers accurate historical detail, sensitive pyschological insight and compassionate consideration of good people trapped by traditional expectations. Cadnum enriches our perceptions of both the Viking and the Anglo-Saxon worlds by his range of characters. We learn with 17 year old Lidsmod via the voices of his fellow sailors -- sensible leader Gunnar, veteran steersman Njord, comic Opir the Boaster and saga-singer Eirik. Even extremely violent men like Gorm or the Berserker Torsten are shown acting from different motives. Similarly, the author balances the impressions of the 13 year old English captive Wiglaf with the mature views of Christian abbot Aethelwulf and the local political lord Redwald. This work is a delightful combination of echoes of ancient myths and foreshadowing of cultural change for both the Norse and the English.

              4 out of 5 stars "historical"???.......2001-07-06

This book is a very interesting tale about the vikinggs and definetly a good read. the editorial review says "historical" reffering to the book as educational about history and thetime of the vikings. It is not at all historical but still a good read.

Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics--$45 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Now in its fourth edition, Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyer beware.

Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. The majority of the book--and that's nearly 800 pages--is devoted to reviews of thousands of cosmetics, from cleansers, foundations, alpha-hydroxy acids, and moisturizers to lip liners, eye shadows, and concealers, all of which Begoun has personally tested. (There are no hair care products listed, as that warrants another book entirely: Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me.)

She's perfectly frank and tells it like it is. (On Revlon's ColorStay Makeup: "goes far beyond the claim of 'It won't come off on him.' It won't come off when you want it to.") You'll learn how to tell when you're being boondoggled by a salesperson, what's overpriced and overhyped, as well as what's overlooked. More than 200 brands are included, along with a helpful summary at the end that lists the best products for each cosmetic category. It should be noted that not only is Begoun a fine consumer advocate, she's also a self-esteem advocate: she mentions time and again that even the best cosmetics won't necessarily improve your life, and that's a point well taken.

                  Book Description

Paula Begoun's mission is to educate women on the facts that the $45 billion cosmetics industry doesn't want people to know. In her makeup and skincare bible, she deciphers ingredient lists, translates cosmetics-counter beauty babble, and evaluates the worth of virtually every product on the market. This completely revised and expanded edition includes more than 75 new product lines. "Her straight talk about what cosmetics can and can't do has penetrated the blare of magazine and advertising hype." - San Francisco Chronicle; "Paula is nationally recognized as an authority on the subject of cosmetics. . . . She takes the cosmetics companies to task." - Miami Herald.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to Trust Someone Selling Their Own Line of Products.......2007-10-10

I was very interested in this book until I found out that the author has her own line of products that compete with every other product she critiques.
I have used many of the products in her books and completely disagree with most of her comments.
I would have a lot more respect for her and her information if she weren't selling her own lines of cosmetics.
If Amazon would allow zero stars, that's what this book would get.

1 out of 5 stars Save your $ she book slams most of the products without validity.......2007-09-23

150 of 152 people found the following review helpful:

I expected this book to enlighten me into whether the manufactures products performed as claimed, such as, whether a cucumber mask healed your skin as it claimed. All this books does is slam most of the products in here for a variety of reasons including "the maker didn't return a phone call" or even that "they did return a phone call but sounded as if they were trying to recruit me to sell their product" and products were slammed as being 'too costly' and 'only for those who have too much money' but never does the author describe the vast testing by the makers of the products.

None of the products were tested by the reviewer to reveal if they deliver what they promised, she only rated ingredients and whether they test on animals or use certain kinds of chemicals that the author claims "we are allergic to", apparently speaking for all of us. She also slams products saying 'if it was the best 2 years ago then how can it be improved?' WHAT AN IDIOT - predicts are constantly evolving as science progresses. This book is only good as expensive kindling for a fireplace. That GOD I bought a used copy for pennies - that is all it is worth.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and author, but NOT the final edition........2007-09-07

Paula Begoun is a great researcher. Whenever it comes to skin care, hair, make up, etc., I turn to her books and website. She stays on top of these things. Just about all the skin care and make up products I use are from her line.

From reading the negative reviews, most of them it seems are coming from those who work for the companies that she has reviewed, their favorite product was simply given a negative rating, or they've simply misinterpreted or didn't read her book carefully enough.

Although she had stated this would be her last edition, according to her Beauty Bulletin newsletter as of September 6th, 2007 she is actually working on a 7th edition and it should be out in January 2008.

                  2 out of 5 stars Too complicated.......2007-08-23

The original book was great. This one is too much. Finding anything takes more time than it's worth. Everything is recommended.

3 out of 5 stars great book but is too dated now.......2007-04-26

I'm a huge fan of the work of Paula Begoun. I have bought all her books but she has quit revising her guide to cosmetics buying. Cosmetics companies regularly change their products, at least the names, so this book won't be of much help in shopping. However, she has a newsletter you can subscribe to and a website. She does her research and will save you lots of money - I now buy most of my cosmetics at the drugstore rather than at dept stores and could not be happier with them.
