Book Description
The once arid valleys and isolated coastal plains of California are today the center of fruit production in the United States. Steven Stoll explains how a class of capitalist farmers made California the nation's leading producer of fruit and created the first industrial countryside in America. This brilliant portrayal of California from 1880 to 1930 traces the origins, evolution, and implications of the fruit industry while providing a window through which to view the entire history of California.
Stoll shows how California growers assembled chemicals, corporations, and political influence to bring the most perishable products from the most distant state to the great urban markets of North America. But what began as a compromise between a beneficent environment and intensive cultivation ultimately became threatening to the soil and exploitative of the people who worked it.
Invoking history, economics, sociology, agriculture, and environmental studies, Stoll traces the often tragic repercussions of fruit farming and shows how central this story is to the development of the industrial countryside in the twentieth century.

Book Description
There is no doubt that an eclipse--whether solar or lunar--is one of the most awe-inspiring natural spectacles that any of us will ever witness. Truly, an eclipse is a natural wonder of the universe; as darkness descends and birds become silent, virtually every living creature looks to the skies. What is an eclipse? The answer to that is the starting point of this fascinating introduction to total and partial eclipses of the sun and moon. Expert Ian Bruce explains how an eclipse takes place and what to expect; what people have believed about eclipses throughout history; the best ways to view an eclipse with and without special equipment; methods you can use to help children understand an eclipse and view it safely; and how you can record the event with a camera or camcorder. Complete with a pair of solar viewing glasses, Eclipse is an excellent introduction to the exciting world of amateur astronomy.

Customer Reviews:
An honest look at eugenics--past and present........2000-04-08
This book presents the eugenics movement in a much more balanced manner than many of the other books from the socialist left. In fact, one of the most interesting facets of early eugenics as explained is that both the left and the right embraced eugenics. Yes, even the socialists new that any eugenic program could improve the quality of the state's people, and that generally socialism could only flourish in a homogenous state of like minded people. But as we all know now, the early eugenics program was overly ambitious, and relied on a purely Mendelian view of genetics--one that was far too simplistic and naïve.
The book also takes a fairly balanced look how pervasive and enduring the concepts of eugenics has been. Most books from the left would like one to think that eugenics was an epiphenomena of a racist agenda. But of course we know that most nations in the past have had concerns about the genetic or racial quality of their people, and in fact it was only during a very brief period of history, from about 1960 to 1980 that the radical environmentalists (Gould et al.) attacked eugenics as a pseudoscience. Though this political correctness still prevails in the media and in government policies, academics now that these old Marxists are the ones that are now sicking into the quagmire of pseudoscience, or science based on a purely political agenda. This book helps clarify much of this propaganda.
Also, contrary to other leftist books on eugenics, this book explains how with the legalization of abortion along with genetic testing, eugenics practiced by individuals is alive and well. And it is being openly discussed by numerous academics as the rising concern of a dysgenic trend and a falling of intelligence is starting to show up on the radar screen. And from recent work by numerous researchers, the heritability of intelligence is no longer in doubt. So eugenics is back and more vibrant than ever. This book gives a good overview of its history and some indications of where we are headed, at least from a socialist's viewpoint.

Since 1965, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has been teaching its students how to climb, kayak, and navigate; how to camp without leaving a trace; how to stay warm and dry in the wilderness; how to cope with a backcountry emergency; and how to effectively lead others through such experiences. There are many reasons for spending time in the remote outdoors. Awe-inspiring scenery, peacefulness, wildlife viewing, and exercise are all good reasons. Another is that such experiences build character: "The wildlands teach us to be smart, practical, resourceful, and observant. To hike ten hours through scabrous terrain, cross a brawny river, stay warm in a snowstorm, and navigate your way out of tangled woods tests and builds your best faculties." While no single book can prepare one for spending time in the wilderness--much less impart all the skills necessary to survive in the elements--the NOLS Guide is an eminently useful place to start. Chapters include primers on equipment (fitting boots and packs, choosing a tent, the "Five Commandments for Equipment Care"); appropriate dress for a variety of climates; and ways of traveling in the backcountry, from crossing scree fields to fording rivers. It's not a substitute for in-depth instruction in, say, snow camping, or reading a map and compass. But with a solid grounding in the basics, one can take that first boot-step into what Joseph Wood Krutch called "the great reservoir of energy, of confidence, of endless hope."
Book Description
The classic backpacker's handbook -- revised and updated -- providing expert guidelines for anyone who loves the outdoors.
The Wilderness Guide brings the savvy of the world's most famous and respected outdoor organization to everyone -- from the 16 million backpacking Americans to the more than 265 million people, tenderfeet and trail-hardened hikers, who visit our national parks annually. It covers:
- Selecting equipment -- including discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of products such as the internal frame pack, lighter-weight boots, and freestanding tents
- The latest "leave no trace" camping techniques
- Traveling safely and sensibly -- including vital information on maps, compasses, and tips on crossing difficult terrain
- Backcountry cooking, with tips on building fires and tricks for making gourmet meals
- Search-and-rescue techniques, including how to organize a self-sufficient search group and when to call in professional rescue teams
Illustrated throughout with instructional drawings and photos and featuring lists of equipment, the Wilderness Guide is a must-have for anyone planning to explore the great outdoors.
Customer Reviews:
Hamstrung by the past.......2006-11-21
I've read a lot of backpacking books and go on backpacking trips each month. A lightweight pack is a better way.
You'll love this book, if you think a 5,000ci pack is required for 2 night trips and a 4,000ci pack is required for an overnight, if you think heavy boots are required, or bringing a heavy fleece jacket or wool sweater is good advice.
It covers a lot of different topics. Unlike other books written by "traditional" backpackers, such as O'Bannon's Backpackin' Book, I didn't feel like I skimmed some good ideas from a knowledgeable and experienced traditionalist backpacker. It was mainly regurgitating dogma, some of which is good advice (but readily available from other sources) and much of it myth.
Good for this kind of camping.......2003-09-19
This book isn't for someone who wants to learn to be attuned to nature, or be able to flow with nature. I recommend Tom Brown Jr.'s books.
Excellent!!.......2002-08-25
A very good coverage of a large variety of topics. Learned a lot.
The best book for serious outdoor adventure.......2001-06-20
I read the book in preparation for a mountaineering course - it's great - informative, well written, a good balance of solid content and easy readability. He would be a great person to go up a mountain with - but the book is a little easier to fit in the backpack!
An absolute must for anyone who camps in the non-RV sense of the word.
If you Can't Take Mark Harvey Camping, Take His Book.......2000-01-28
As a carefree college student,I camped quite often, but today, as a thirty year old business owner, I prefer to enjoy the outdoors by day, and to sleep in my warm, safe, familiar home by night. Harvey's Wilderness Guide has not only helped me to more thoroughly enjoy my day hikes, but it has also served as a catalyst to reignite my enthusiasm in camping for more than a Sunday afternoon. Harvey delivers intelligent, informative information in an easy to understand and enthusiastic style. The Wilderness Guide is packed with information, but it is far from bland reading, for Harvey is not only intelligent and well written, but he has a sense of humor as well. I live in Aspen and have spent time with Mark Harvey on numerous occasions. Possibly I will be able to camp with him one day. If not, I always have The National Outdoor Leadership School's Wilderness Guide.

The book's great, the cassette is crap. So I'll only tell you that what you learn on the cassette is a series of disconnected words or phrases, which will only help you if you have the precise problem with you hotel room as the speakers on the tape - otherwise, you're stuck.

The Millionaire Next Door
ASIN: 0793122406 |
Book Description
Many assume you have to have a lot of money before you can manage your money. James Steamer shows otherwise. And he has the credentials to prove it. As The Wall Street Journal says, "Mr. Steamer and his wife have accumulated $250,000 in investments and home equity...and their combined average annual income has been less than $20,000." With these tips on saving, spending, credit, taxes, and more, even a small salary can be stretched...for lasting financial security!
Hundreds of savings tips for expenses large and small
The author is a financial consultant who has personally achieved "wealth on minimal wage"
In the tradition of The Tightwad Gazette, the Beardstown Ladies book, and other financial guides for "regular people"
Customer Reviews:
Should be titled "How to Stay Broke on Minimum Wage".......2002-10-22
Mr.Steamer's suggestions imply that in order to become a millionare, one must be essentially perfect and alone- that is, having no health problems, minimal bills, no family, and find the cheapest place to live. I think it can be assumed that if one were to live alone and have perfect health in the cheapest city in the world and not spend their money on frivelous things, they too could be a millionare. Personally, I would rather sacrifice the millions of dollars that James Steamer claims I can make, and rather have a family, accept my imperfect health (and treat it with the backing of health insurance), and spend money on fast food or an occassional movie once in awhile.
Disappointed and Skeptical.......1998-03-04
I was disappointed in the book. Perhaps I've already read too many financial books, but I honestly didn't get any new good ideas from this book. One of his ideas really concerns me - Mr. Steamer offers that if one is fairly young, in good health, and has no family history of health problems, he/she could consider going without health insurance (in effect, they become self insured paying their own costs out of pocket). He doesn't explictedly recommend this, but he does offer it as a potential cost saving. I believe this is a bad idea, since a major medical emergency (although perhaps remote), would lead to financial ruin. It's just too great a risk in my opinion. I should add I'm in no way affliated with the healthcare or insurance industry. I also believe that most financial planners would agree with me that this is a bad idea.
The other thing that bothers me about the book is that we're to believe Mr. Steamer somehow managed to sock away $250,000 over a ten year period with a cumulative gross salary of only $220,000 for a family of three. At one time, I tried to live by myself on an annual salary of less than 17K and it was difficult (and I consider myself a pretty frugal person). The book offers cost savings tips and financial advice, but I don't see how you could achieve what Mr. Steamer claims he has even if you used all of his ideas. I guess that was the biggest problem I had with the book. That fact kept bothering me as I read more of the book. Perhaps Mr. Steamer should have included some more factual information on how he himself achieved all that wealth. I wouldn't have been so bothered if he claimed to have gotten real lucky in the stock market, bought a house at auction for next to nothing and fixed it up himself, etc.
Excellent book for families.......1997-08-05
This is an excellent book for families to read. Especially husbands! Jim Steamer takes a common-sense approach and I'm impressed that he's actually achieving financial independence in spite of low-paying jobs. It just proves to me that it CAN be done. It was inspiring to me to know that sometimes a low-paying job can be seen as a "temporary" choice if it gives you control of your time and your life. The only reason I didn't give this book a "10" is because the one thing I didn't find in Jim Steamer's book was more background about what motivated him or his wife's comments or input. However, I was glad to find this in "Woman's Day" magazine, the September 1, 1997 issue. I still cannot figure out why the article doesn't seem to mention his book

Book Description
This timely and authoritative book explains the rise and fall of economies in Asia, Central America and Europe since 1980 and discusses these crises in the context of continuing economic globalization.
This updated and fully revised edition includes a detailed account of the Mexican crisis of 1994-95, the Japanese crisis which has worsened in the late 1990s and the Asian crisis which emerged in 1997. Professor Allen discusses the impact of new uses and forms of money, and new financial flows such as electronic monies and offshore financial markets. These processes explain how the US economy has benefited from 'money-mercantilism' at the expense of other regions of the world. The author then provides a thorough taxonomy of the common patterns of recent currency crises. He formalizes a 'new political economy of money' which goes further than the conventional literature in explaining these patterns.
Roy Allen provides policy recommendations for the G7, World Bank, IMF and various nations which will also prove invaluable to students and scholars of financial economics, international economics and international political economy.

Book Description
The World Bank's Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) is one of the world's best known series of conferences for the presentation and discussion of new knowledge about development. The conference has become increasingly ambitious in scope as the world's economies have become more interconnected, challenges have become more complex, and the distinction between development economics and other disciplines has become less clear. This volume collects together papers from the 1999 ABCDE in Europe given by some of the most prominent thinkers on development issues. These papers reflect the fact that economic trends are demanding a more intense and dynamic flow of ideas and expertise between the developed and developing worlds, between Europe and America, between north and south. While there is growing consensus among economic policymakers on the need for macroeconomic stability, there is less agreement on how to balance this need with pressing social needs.
