Book Description
Empowerment is a term that has grown in use in community development and the business world in recent years yet few books have actually detailed the processes which individuals and groups can use in order to develop. This book includes numerous exercises which enable adult learners to analyze their past experiences; change accepted definitions of power and empowerment and develop strategies to address problems and projects in a more empowered way. Facilitators and trainers are encouraged to adopt and adapt the tools used in this book - tools that include card sorts, stories, myths, case studies, film analysis and personal stories from the author. Used to great effect in Europe, the USA and Canada, the processes have also been used very successfully applied in a number of different cultures including Aboriginal groups in Australia, Moslem women in Malaysia, Danish development workers in Nepal and lecturers in Mongolia!

Truly a Unique Book about a Unique Family of Plants.......2006-04-05
Tobacco, Mandrake, Potato, Tomato, Pepper, Eggplant, Henbane, Jimpson Weed, Petunia, "Wonderberry", Deadly Nightshade, Woody Nightshade, "Devil's Trumpet", Brugmansia, Chilli Peppers - all are in the same family of plants - the potato/nightshade family. This book tells the story of many of these plants, and ties them all together. The author has a scientific/historical background, and succeeds in painting a fascinating, intriguing picture of these plants, in a way that few authors would be able to do. After reading this book, you may be wondering just what a garden with all of these plants together might look like - certainly a unique phenomenon!
Book Description
Looking back almost 1,000 years, the mists of Japan's chaotic past shroud the development of a way of life, an ancient struggle waged against fierce feudal lords who ruled the island nation with swords of steel and a code of death before dishonor. The people of the mountainous regions of what is now Iga prefecture wanted to live in peace, but their lords had other plans-so the people learned the martial arts of self-defense and used their meager farm tools as weapons against the samurai blades of their oppressors. Nine traditions of the ninja arts grew out of this seemingly endless struggle, and legends were told of the supernatural abilities of the ninja fighters. The ninja never gained the kind of power that topples tyrants, but they gained a reputation that made tyrants cautious. And they gained the kind of power that makes the spirit endure and the mind the master of its fate. Told in actual stories of past grandmasters and in dojo lectures on techniques-with photographs, drawings, and paintings-the last surviving grandmaster of the ancient art of ninjutsu, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, presents Essence of Ninjutsu: The Nine Traditions. In it, he explains why, after more than 900 years, the art of the shadow warriors continues to inspire and serve practitioners from around the world. Dr. Hatsumi's book contains historic ninja scrolls and describes techniques for self-defense, and it debunks tricks that are attributed to the ninja but actually derive more from the circus than the martial arts. Essence of Ninjutsu is a fascinating, authoritative look at the roots of ninjutsu and how it continues to enrich the lives of its practitioners today. Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi is a bone doctor, artist, and writer, as well as the 34th grandmaster of the nine schools of the ninja arts in Japan. He has toured the United States in recent years to help Americans better understand the ninja and their way of life. His articles have appeared in all of the major martial arts magazines.
Customer Reviews:
never really gets to the heart of the matter........2006-06-26
As someone interested in japanese history and culture, rather than in learning martial arts. From previous comments and the authors pedigree, I figured that this book provide me more illumination on the historical ninja. Unfortunately, by the end of the book I still didn't feel that I had a very good grasp of who the ninja were and where they fit into japanese society. One problem with the book is that Masaaki Hasumi's writing tends to jump around quite a bit (perhaps better translationa and editing would have helped).
On the bright side, there are quite a few hidden pearls of wisdom hidden within the text, that I found interesting and useful.
Lots of interesting background information........2006-02-27
As a relative newcomer tot Ninjutsu I wanted te read more about the history of Ninjutsu and its roots in Japanese feudal society.
I found this quitte suffeciently in Essence of Ninjutsu. It has a lot of illustrative stories and historical context. A must read for the avid nunjutsu practicioner !
An exceptional view of Ninjutsu.......2006-02-14
Massaki Hatsumi gives an exceptional view of Ninjutsu that is practically unparelled to the rest. One such interesting notion is that ninjas are not cold-blooded murderers. Hatsumi states that hundreds of years ago Togakure ninjas avoided killing anyone in the enemy's camp and only did it when there was no other choice. This I would say is a perfect example of the difference between a ninja and an assassin.
Another interesting thing about this book was the many insightful stories Hatsumi tells. The story that I enjoyed the most was the one with the egotistical warrior who's head was too hard to hit. If you think about it, this story alone expresses the true essence of Ninjutsu.
If you're into ninjas or the martial arts, and wondering what Ninjutsu is really about, I whole-heartedly recommend this book by Massaki Hatsumi. It helped me realize and understand so much about Ninjutsu that before I read this book I was only living in a child's fantasy.
Spiritual Basis for Ninpo Today..........2003-02-13
Narrated by Masaaki Hatsumi, 34th generation lineage holder of the Togakure school of ninpo (and holder of 8 other traditional Japanese martial lineages, at least 6 of which have been verified), This book is the closest thing Hatsumi sensei has written to an autobiography. Hatsumi introduces us to his teacher, Takamatsu Sensei. Chapter 2 includes an interview with Takamatsu sensei conducted by Hatsumi, and throughout he discusses his experiences training with his teacher, his love for his teacher, and how he came to understand the ideas Takamatsu imparted to him.
Numerous learning incidents are recounted by Hatsumi, both while training, and also while simply spending time with his teacher. Each chapter includes a traditional story which imparts something of the spirit of ninpo to the reader. Hatsumi Sensei's writings are rife with anecdotes, recollections, historical observations, and cautiously thought out conclusions. Most touching I found to be his visit to Takamatsu Sensei's tomb accompanied by the Sensei's daughter, and the thought she shared with him (page 68).
For those looking for an introduction to ninjutsu, I'd recommend Masaaki Hatsumi's other book, "Ninjutsu: History and Traditions". For the reader prepared to go beyond learning about ninja weapons and general history, this volume "Essence of Ninjutsu: The Nine Traditions" offers a look at the heart of a kindly man and a profound art.
Great Book!.......2001-07-08
This book is superior to many of its contemporaries on the subject of ninpo. Many areas are covered, most of which is devoted to the life and adventures of Takamatsu Sensei. The reader learns of his youth, training in the old budo tradition of the Shinden Fudo school, later learning the secrets of ninjutsu and traveling to China to further his studies. There are excellent B/W photos of woodblock prints, as well as several pages devoted to Gyokko style mutodori kata. This is a must-have for any practicioner of ninpo or koryu bujutsu.

Very useful guide.......2006-11-17
The guide is very complete almost every relevant town in Turkey has a description.
The history glimpse is very interesting. The descriptions of hotels and places to eat is very helpfull. The taste of the author is low cost oriented, my wife and me we had to choose from high price hotels.
The guide should be improved with a more extensive description of important places museum and arqueological sites. This is important because tourism in Turkey is very undeveloped and there are not maps and descriptions of what are you viewing. Apparently, there is an agreement between government and local vendors in order not to provide maps or good descriptions in order to force tourist to buy booklets or hire guides. When you visit 2 or three places a day this may be unafordable.
Additionaly, the guide can be improved more clearly with what you have to see in each place, as the stars in Michelin guide.
Maps are difficult to read, they have small dark grey numbers over a light grey. Also when you read about a feature in the text, you have to find it in the legend to get a number to find it in the map.

Book Description
This omnibus collection puts all three of the critically acclaimed AiT stories in one place: "Live from the Moon," "Space: 1959," and "One Shot, One Beer". "Live from the Moon" launches fifty years after Armstrong's one small step. The world's richest man claims the moon as his own personal property... and Channel Seven is there! "Space: 1959" is a period adventure featuring an earlier generation of the Channel Seven newshounds from "Live from the Moon". They uncover the story of Col. Lloyd Macadam's top-secret moon-shot program. Macadam's plans are accelerated when a Russian spy commandeers the rocket and the Colonel must choose between his country and his life. "One Shot, One Beer" picks up ten years after the events of "Live from the Moon" where space jockeys relate tales of life on Earth's desolate sister, far from home.

Great thought-provoking entertainment!.......2007-08-03
I can't believe it took me so long to get this and read it.
Kudos to Author Young for putting together an interesting story and then a prequel and sequel that do it justice. What fun!
Highly recommended for fans of Space Travel, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels, Robots, Rockets, Reading & Drinking.

Lost in Space.......2005-11-23
This book collects the three different "Astronauts in Trouble" series into an attractive, compact format. The rich stories feature sharp, stark black and white inking that does an excellent job of varying the level of detail from exacting to suggestive. And while many artists might have been tempted to go crazy with the techno aspects of the space storylines, Adlard is admirably restrained. However, production-wise, there are three areas for improvement: First, in a collection this long, there's no excuse for not having page numbers, especially when the layout allows plenty of margin to do so. Second, a dust jacket to tempt the browser with something visually arresting and make them want to open the covers (as the original series covers did). Here, they've gone the conceptual route, with a blah cover that's supposed to look like a government document -- sometimes clever concepts should remain as concepts. Finally, the paper stock is kind of cheap, with poor opacity, resulting in a lot of "see-through" inking from the reverse of pages. On to the the storytelling...
Set in the not-to-distant future, "Live from the Moon" opens rather confusingly with an underwater hostage situation involving a news team confronting an ecoterrorist. The Channel Seven trio (cameraman, producer, reporter) escape by the skin of their teeth, establishing them as a news crew that lives dangerously. We next find them in Georgia, waiting to interview megabillioniare industrialist Ishmael Hayes about his latest venture. They're a little stunned to be introduced to his private lunar expedition, and more stunned when they find themselves along for a ride to the moon when an ecoterrorist causes a premature launch. Events get even more interesting when they discover his plan to stake claim to the entire moon... but when some gangsters back on Earth decide to launch Ukrainian nukes at them, things go from bad to worse. It's a very convoluted tale with a lot of "huh?" moments (SPOILER ALERT: Would old Soviet nukes actually be able to reach the moon? Would a short burst from a directional antenna actually divert including missiles? And if Hayes actually controls the ecoterrorists, why did he allow them to affect his operation?), but plenty of wit and style. The dialogue is especially good, and tends to distract from the plot holes.
"Space: 1959" steps back a generation to the dawn of mobile television news, where an earlier (but strikingly similar) crew from Channel Seven plays detective. A seemingly innocuous downtown shooting puts them on the track of a secret government plan to beat the USSR to the moon. At a rocket base in Peru they meet Col. Macadam, a square-jawed, crew-cut, gung-ho '50s hero who won't let anyone interfere with his pet project. As in the first story, an infiltrator sabotages the plan, and Macadam must make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure no dirty commie is first to set foot on the moon. It's somewhat schizophrenic (intentionally so, according to the intro), starting as a kind of classic crime caper, then moving into pulp action/adventure, and ending in a long contemplative sequence.
"One Shot, One Beer" is the most whimsical portion of the collection, taking place a decade after "Live From the Moon." At Cool Ed's lunar bar, where they have "the only Guinness on tap for 240,000 miles", a bunch of barflies sit around swapping stories. These include an accidental bank heist, a Japanese folk tale, a Sherpa's encounter with Col. Macadam long ago, and a few more bits and pieces that dovetail with the two previous entries in the series. At the core of is a lengthy "insider's" story about what happened ten years ago with all that "Hayes stuff." A miner who worked on Hayes' subsurface excavation gives his own account of how the "Live From the Moon" events played out, and his own role in almost destroying the entire base. It's a nice ending to the book, and the robot bar owner is especially amusing.
Five microcomics based on "Astronauts in Trouble" and written by creator Larry Young round things out, but don't add much to the proceedings. All in all, it's a solid piece of work blending action, sci-fi, and humor -- definitely likely to appeal to those with a real interest in astronauts (duh!). Young deserves kudos for creating a series that spans generations and genres in a refreshing manner.

A must read.......2001-03-14
Everyone in the US buys a car at some point. Whether it's a new or used car this book tells you how to buy a car the right way. Think of it as an investment. Spend a little for this book, save a huge amount when buying a car.
It's hard to say enough about this book. Highly, highly recommended.
Don't Buy A Car Without Reading This Book!.......2000-11-07
An incisive look at a dog-eat-dog business. Helps the car buyer through the major pitfalls of purchasing a new or used car which, unfortunately, exist at just about every stop in the car dealership.
For car buyers willing to do their homework, there is no reason to get ripped off. Sutton shows you how to arm yourself with some common-sense tactics that almost anyone can use.
An amusing sidebar for me was, after reading Sutton's book, was having several salespeople AND managers ask me if I was a former car lot manager. I just smiled inscrutibly and answered that I had 'contacts' in the business.
Required reading for any car-buyer.......2000-11-06
I purchased this book after hearing Mr. Sutton on a syndicated radio show. His information is right on the money, specifically mine. I am not a person who enjoys confrontation, but this book gave me the courage to stand up for myself. The first dealership I went to would not even budge on their new-car price or their offer for my trade-in. (I was looking for a specific model "program" car.) I was depressed and wanted to turn around and accept their offer. My husband wouldn't let me since I had been telling him about this book. Instead we drove less than 1 hour north to the next dealership and found the same car loaded with more options. I purchased that car for less than the one at the first dealership.
outdated but captivating.......2000-07-08
What is so emotional about car buying that people who gladly waste money on overpriced vacations in crowded places and fattening food in the lousy restaurants really feel like they need to save all they can on the auto! How is the dealership different from any other business, it also has marketing costs etc and needs to make the money. Mr. Sutton obviously knows what his readers want. The book is captivating but clearly he hates the dealerships and auto business, and I do not see where the rational approach is. The main advice of his is comparison shopping, and you should know that anyway!
A valuable pre-purchase pep talk!.......2000-06-15
I bought the first edition of this book in paperback, and it's practically worn through now. While the author presents a worst-case scenario that's almost comical, the information is all extremely valuable and insightful. The character of "Killer" makes the book an easy and enjoyable read, and allows the reader to learn dealers' tactics from a real-world rather than theoretical perspective. It's unlikely that any dealer would use EVERY trick in the book, but you never know which ones he/she'll use, so Mr. Sutton includes them all.
I read this book years ago, then again in late 1998 when it was time to buy my first brand-new car. I ended up getting a very popular 1999 model for less than dealer invoice -- a savings of over $3000! I could never have done it without this book.
Buy it, read it, use it! It's fantastic!

Book Description
Japan is only one of many industrialized economies to suffer a financial crisis in the last fifteen years, but it has suffered the most from its crisis - as measured in lost output and investment opportunities, and in the direct costs of clean-up. Comparing the response of Japanese policy in the 1990s to that of U.S. monetary and financial policy to the American Savings and Loan Crisis of the late 1980s sheds light on the reasons for this outcome. This volume was created by bringing together several leading academics from the United States and Japan - plus former senior policymakers from both countries - to discuss the challenges to Japanese financial and monetary policy in the 1990s. The papers address in turn both the monetary and financial aspects of the crisis, and the discussants bring together broad themes across the two countries' experiences.
As the papers in this Special Report demonstrate, while the Japanese government's policy response to its banking crisis in the 1990s was slow in comparison to that of the United States government a decade earlier, the underlying dynamics were similar. A combination of mismanaged partial deregulation and regulatory forebearance gave rise to the crisis and allowed it to deepen, and only the closure of some banks and injection of new capital into others began the resolution. The Bank of Japan's monetary policy from the late 1980s onwards, however, was increasingly out of step with U.S. or other developed country norms. In particular, the Bank of Japan's limited response to deflation after being granted independence in 1998 stands out as a dangerous and unusual stance.

Super run through of Japan's malaise.......2001-06-30
Recently, Adam Posen (an influential US monetary economist)has written some really good stuff on Japan's economic problems. It was his name on the cover that persuaded me to buy this book.
If you want a rich and in depth - in some parts academic - account of why Japan is struggling then this is for you. There are four themes...1) the origin of Japan's banking problems 2)comparisons of Japan's banking problems and the US S&L crisis 3) political problems faced by those who wish to see the BOJ adopting very loose money and 4) how the BOJ's monetary policy can be adapted to these exceptional circumstances and used to promote a sustainable recovery.
If you read this and Posen's previous books on Japan you'll be well equipped to understand what is wrong with the world's second largest economy. The only weak area is the treatment of fiscal matters. Those are largely ignored, even though fears of government bankrupcty weigh heavily on the financial markets.
