            Book Description

It is generally assumed that soil fertility decline is widespread in the tropics and that this is largely associated with annual cropping and subsistence farming. In contrast, perennial plant cover (as in plantation agriculture) provides better protection for the soil. This book reviews these
concepts, focusing on soil chemical changes under different land-use systems in the tropics. These include perennial crops, annual crops and forest plantations. Two case studies, on sisal plantations in Tanzania and sugar cane in Papua New Guinea, are presented for detailed analysis. The author
demonstrates that soil fertility decline is also a problem on plantations.

There are two reasons to head out to the ballpark. One is to passively watch the game, the other is to actively see it, and you can't do the latter without a scorecard. In this slim gem of a volume, Paul Dickson clearly explains and translates the quirky documentation system, which looks like cuneiform to the uninitiated, for recording what happens on the ball field, and why true fans are so adamant about doing it. Filled with history, anecdotes, and rules, it also reproduces--to the joy of scorers everywhere--the official scorer's records for some of baseball's most significant moments, including Don Larson's perfecto and Babe Ruth's called shot.

                  Book Description

The history of scorekeeping, practical scoring techniques, notable scorekeeping blunders and idiosyncrasies, facsimiles of famous scorecards, and more-it’s all here in this “celebration of one of baseball’s most divine and unique pleasures” (USA Today Baseball Weekly).

4 out of 5 stars Informative and fun, a easy read gem you must have.......2005-10-09

I found this book while looking for an informative reference on how to score the game. I looked at two other titles and chose this one because it contained the information I was seeking and loads of extra "fun facts" regarding the history of the game. It is a fun read and I think you will find this a "gem" of a book. This would make a great present to any youngsters who start an interest in baseball.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Fun Book.......2005-08-06

I would recommend this book for those wanting to learn MORE about scoring, not how to score. After reading, we went to a Major League Baseball game and kept score...lots of fun.

3 out of 5 stars More Interesting Than Informative.......2005-07-12

This book contains an excellent history of scorekeeping (and thus lives up to its subtitle). As a fan of baseball history, I appreciated it for that. It was also a quick read, and I read it all in less than an afternoon. I recommend it if you are interested in the history of scoring.

It was lacking, however, in the "how-to" department. I was just learning to score games. I had been using the guide contained in baseball programs and was looking for a little more depth. This book did provide a little more depth, but not a great deal. It contains information about marking plays, but does not go in to a lot of detail about the rules (which are essential to being a good scorekeeper). I did find it helpful to learn that not all scorers mark their card identically because as I developed some of my own techniques, I didn't feel like I was doing a disservice to the history of the game.

It is a good starting point for the beginning scorer and an excellent reference on scoring background; but if you have scored a few and are looking to get more complex, you may want to pass on this.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Fun.......2005-07-10

Author Paul Dickson's love of baseball flows from every page of this delightful little book. It's not a how-to book, but rather an appreciation of the art form of scoring a baseball game. It includes a comprehesive list of abbreviations used in scoring, many anecdotes, and photos of scorecards from famous games.

4 out of 5 stars Chock full, but a little scattered.......2003-08-17

This is probably the very best book out there about scoring, and aptly titled, because after I read this book I have become fascinated with scoring (maybe a little too much??). The author clearly loves the game and gives you lots of reasons to love it yourself.
The book's thoroughness is both its strength and weakness. There is only a small section that gives you a clear mandate on how to score. But the rest of the book is just plain chock full of suggestions and variations, from simple to being able to recreate the game pitch-by-pitch, but you have to read the whole book to get all of them. This also makes it hard to find something you remember from past readings. There is an index to help out, though.
Overall, a great book that truly embraces the joy of scoring, and has dozens of styles that you can choose to use when you score. He leaves it up to you to pick your own style.

                      Book Description

The wide, unbounded oceans of the world have always fascinated travellers, as have the restless port cities that connect land to sea. But has the romance that has always surrounded sea travel survived in an era of rationalised ports and sparsely crewed container ships?

Thornton McCamish sets out from London, one of the world's great maritime cities, in search of whatever remains of the rough-and-ready life of those who work and travel by water. In ports big, small, ancient, modern and deservedly forgotten he seeks for the world of sea dogs, old salts and adventure - and finds bad food, themed bars, model ships and prostitutes. As he circumnavigates the Mediterranean and follows the ancient spice and slaver routes around Cape Horn and across the Indian Ocean to Kochi, he gradually finds that the mystery and menace of the oceans endure beneath and parallel to our globalised world. Supercargo is a penetrating and wickedly funny study of a way of life and travel that refuses to die.

                      3 out of 5 stars A Lackluster Excursion.......2003-11-12

More often than not, travel literature is sparked by the imagination. That reality rarely coincidences with the imagination is more or less to be expected in the genre. As long as the journey is inquisitive and interesting, the reader remains satisfied. What is less successful is when a writer's imagination exceeds their own verve and boldness, as in this lackluster tramp through ports of the Mediterranean, around Africa and into the Indian Ocean.

Australian writer McCamish embarked in search of the "idea of the port", a restless place on the edges of civilization, where cultures meet to trade, and the dregs of society cluster. He prepares us for disappointment by admitting up front that this kind of port "may have already disappeared," but proceeds to book passage on several cargo ships. It doesn't take long for him to realize that in the era of the container cargo ship, ports no longer carry much sense of adventure-or at least, not as far as he's willing to pursue the matter. For, even though he's enamored with the idea of dingy dockfront bars full of brawling sailors and women of ill repute, he shrinks from any contact with them. Bemoaning the absence of any "characters", he is too timid to place himself in the kinds of situations where he might meet interesting people with stories to tell. Constant references to calling his wife back home give the sense that he took this journey about a decade too late in his life. It also doesn't help that he can't get ashore at a number of stops due to bureaucratic hassles or the obstinacy of the ship's captain.

Which is not to say there aren't some interesting stories and some amusing characters. The snippets of history and tales from other sources are woven in rather well, and life aboard a massive cargo ship is moderately interesting for a while. At the beginning and the end, McCamish is joined on his trip by friends, and these parts are noticeably better for the addition of another perspective. Eccentric sailors, stewards, and captains fill up the middle, but there's little made from the potential. Too often, McCamish seems to have little to say, and the result is a work that at times barely rises above the level of a good journal.

                      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey.......2002-09-25

Thornton McCamish's journey among ports is a wonderful, witty and whimsical work - the perfect holiday read. McCamish has a gentle and very funny writing style - completely engaging. His observations are sharp and his journey compelling. When do we get a second book Mr McCamish?

5 out of 5 stars Life, literature and a ship of fools.......2002-09-16

McCamish sets out from London to India on several ships (and some planes) with a mission to immerse himself in an obsolete idea of ports: the edginess of port towns, their last-chance saloons, their toothless old salts. Has the romance of sea travel vanished from towns built from the dregs and riches of the sea? The answer, in this warm, engrossing story, is a qualified no. As he makes his way from Marseille to Cape Town to Cochin, India on various cargo ships, McCamish gradually accepts that the days of adventures before the mast are over, but finds that the workaday tedium of modern container ships has been amply filled by a bizarre cast of lonely sailors, prostitutes, missionaries and mystical drunks.

The strength of this book lies in McCamish's dry humour and his passion for his subject. There are some great lines and some lovely writing, evoking the atmosphere of the empty sea, the pleasures of a long journey, and the comedy and dignity of the ordinary sailors he meets. This is a journey begins with travellers' nostalgia and ends in a celebration of real life at sea in the 21st century. Highly recommended to armchair travellers.

                      1 out of 5 stars A timid tome from a timid traveller.......2002-07-23

As a simple account of one man's voyages, this is barely acceptable. On the other hand, great disappointment awaits those who, like me, bought this book in anticipation of an in-depth insight into travel on cargo ships. McCamish writes badly, and is seemingly concerned more with destinations than getting there. Even then, he resorts frequently to quoting the descriptions, often archaic, that others have written about various ports. He is overly concerned to the point of immaturity with a romanticised notions of barnacle-encrusted sailors brawling in bars where scared civillians like he fear to tread, and other cliches attached to men of the sea, and is then disappointed when he can't find them.
Throughout the reading of this I hoped he'd stop his moaning and nervous uncertainty, get on a plane, and go home.
It's the worst book I've struggled through in a long time. And I learnt next to nothing about travel on cargo ships.

2 out of 5 stars A good idea spoiled by a boring writer.......2002-04-27

The idea of travelling from port to port sounds like an exciting prospect. And it probably would be a great subject for a book if undertaken by anyone with any sense of adventure or, better yet, someone with more degenerate qualities than McCamish. There is no question that such a voyage, especially one that is essentially arranged by a travel agent on the writer's behalf, is not going to necessarily live up to the cartoonish view of salty seamen brawling and whoring (although a fair share of the latter appears to have survived). However, the adventure is a basically sound concept that would have been better had it been vicariously lived through someone who was completely willing to immerse themselves into it instead of calling his wife at every port and trying to avoid prostitutes. McCamish's story is that of an obviously well-to-do Australian keeping an arms length distance from his subject.

In the epic book There will be Wolves, Ursula always seems to have trouble around the corner; here are some things that happen. First at her hometown, Cologne, she finds a dog with a broken leg and heals it. She meets a man Bruno who helps carry the dog to her house. Oh, and later Ursula almost gets burnt, that's kind of important. People of the town accuse her of being a witch, and she can't prove herself guilty. Her father, Master Williams, convinces the Count to set her free. Next her house burns down and her only way of survival is on a "Holy Crusade". Master Williams is like the Counts maid, giving him medication mostly, and Master Williams doesn't care. Master Williams is old and forces Ursula on the Crusade with him, Bruno comes too. Half way through the story, about 80% of the crusaders are killed. Robbers and bandits come and kill Ursula's horses and rob Ursula of her supplies. Master Williams gets sick from doing all the things the Count demands him to do. Then, Ursula's group reach they're final destination to find a battle with the Turks. The Turks are warriors of Turkey. The Turks end up slaughtering the crusaders and kill the Count; Ursula is left with a dead father, who died from a bad sickness, Bruno and a dog. I wonder why the book is called There will be Wolves when there are actually no wolves in the book.

There are scores of childrens books out there that are well-written and engaging enough to be enjoyable and entertaining for adult readers as well: Harry Potter, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, Robin McKinley's Beauty, etc. This book does not find itself among their ranks.

The premise is rather interesting: it follows the experiences of a young girl on the People's Crusade and is very concerned with the moral inconsistencies of the crusades. The crusaders are on a misson of God and will be absolved of their sins for participating, yet plunder, pillage and murder their way through the country side. In the end, the mission is one of glory for the nobles and the poor folk who come along for the ride bear the brunt of the devastation.

That said, the characters are completely flat and lifeless. The main action of the plot begins before we have a chance to get to know and care about the main characters, and I'll echo everyone who pointed out that Bradford does more telling than showing. Ursula is as cliched a strong girl heroine as you can get- proud, brave, thinks being independent means not relying on even those who love you until she learns that it's ok to be vulnerable. Her speech and mannerisms stand out at times as anachronistic in a jarring way, and I was surprised that the book seemed to end as quickly as it did because I was waiting for some depth and development for any of the characters.

It is certainly not the worst thing I've read, and young readers (I would say not above 12) will find the reading manageable, but I'm quite curious now as to what exactly the Canadian Library Association was thinking in awarding this book the Young Adult Book Award. Maybe it was a year of slim pickings. Borrow it from the library before investing in your own copy.

i had to read this book in my humanities class, so of course i HAD to do a huge report on it, but in general the book was okay. in some parts it was very predictable, but in others, i had no clue what was going to happen next. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesnt like medival history, but for anyone who does like books like this one, it would be great. it tells you a lot about what happened on the Crusades.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't the best i've ever read. To me, it seemed more like a first-time author book. Though it did open my eyes about the People's Crusade and the Crusades in general. I always thought about the fighting and killing in Jerusalem, I never thought about the fighting and killing on the way there.
All in all, i enjoyed it and recomend it and the other two in the Crusades trilogy-Shadows on and Sword and Lionheart's Scribe-to any lover of midieval books.

                      3 out of 5 stars Meh........2004-02-05

This book did have an interesting topic, something that initially caught my eye when I was looking for a good book to read. One usually finds more generic medieval eras as the setting, rather than the crusades specifically. However, when I began the book, I found it rather disappointing. The main characters were, in a word, flat. There was no real sense of being in the story, and I found a surplus of slightly clichéd supporting characters which was very disheartening, as the plot was fairly original, though still very easy to predict. While this particular work didn't live up to expectations, I do think the author is heading down the right path, and given more time and experience, could create some magnificant writings, though this book was not one.

                                Book Description

Market-defining since it was first introduced, International Business, 4e by Charles W. L. Hill, continues to set the standard for international business textbooks. Charles Hill’s reputation as a leading thinker and actor in the international arena precede him, and he is regularly asked to explain world economic events on National Public Radio. His expertise lends itself to a book that is thorough and up-to-date. Because many issues in international business are complex, they necessitate exploration of pros and cons of economic theories, government policies, business strategies, organizational structures, etc. The author challenges the often shallow explanations that other books offer, while maintaining a tight integrated flow between the chapters. Hill’s book is practical in nature, focusing on managerial implications of each topic on the actual practice of international business. The author’s passion and enthusiasm for the international business arena is apparent on every page as he strives to make important theories interesting, informative, and accessible to all students.

I think that these reviews are for the textbook and not for this "outline." This product is nothing but a glossary and binder paper. It isn't worth half the price. I'm very, very disappointed. Most of the definitions are repeated in other chapters and it gives definitions for words like "Disney," and "Accounting." This thing is completely useless to me.

I've used previous editions of this text in my international business course, and have decided to adopt this one as well. The text does a great job of hitting every topic that international business people/corporations need to know. The text covers country differences, economics, strategy, and corporate functions.
Another Amazon review incorrectly suggested that the author of this text is biased politically and in favor of larger firms. If the author intended to introduce a political bias in the text he certainly could have done it with the cases, but it is clear from reading such cases as the Kellogg Brown & Root case on page 190 that the author has no particular axe to grind. It is, in short, simply impossible to guess the author's political orientation.
The book also has no bias in favor of larger firms. The business school in which I teach is (in fact) oriented towards entrepreneurship and smaller firms. The text was selected, in part, because the information imparted would be just as valuable to small firms as it would be to the large. The author specifically addresses the topic of "mini-multinationals" as well as topics that would be of interest primarily to smaller firms.

3 out of 5 stars Bias written into text.......2007-05-13

If you don't mind your information being written from the Western, pro Big-Business, capitalist view, the bias conveyed throughout the text won't be a problem. But if you are looking for something objective, something to fairly present the concepts associated with globalization, search elsewhere.

In the first two chapters alone, several instances of bias are written into the text. For example, in the first chapter, protesters of the WTO are referred to as "anarchists" and in the second chapter the difference between communists and social democrats is claimed to be that communists use violence in their revolutions. This is clearly not the case. While historically this may be true of the revolts, this is not even close to the fundamental difference between the two groups. For the first example, it can be seen that thousands of people gather to protest the WTO and it is certain that a select few, if any, consider themselves anarchists.

It is clear where the author stands!

These views are personal! This book is comparable and on equal footing with the "International Business" by Czinkota, Ronkainen & Moffet. One is complementary of the other. Some of the subjects are overlapping. I am in the opinions both are focusing on the topics for the benefits of the readers, especially for MBA students. Both are a great & wonderful books. By the way, I have only read Mr Hill's 1st edition book. I have not read his latest edition (1998)Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Very educational and easy to read!.......1999-05-25

Having purchased this book for a class on World Business, it was required reading. We have worked mostly with the text jumping around a bit.

The book has proven to be highly educational. Covering both macro and micro aspects of World Business, the book is easy to read for anyone with some knowledge of economics.

In-depth case studies throughout the book make it quite enjoyable, and emphasize the authors points.

Market-defining since it was first introduced, International Business, 4e by Charles W. L. Hill, continues to set the standard for international business textbooks. Hills book is practical in nature, focusing on managerial implications of each topic on the actual practice of international business. The authors passion and enthusiasm for the international business arena is apparent on every page as he strives to make important theories interesting, informative, and accessible to all students. Features include: Content changes have been made to every chapter to reflect the dynamic nature of international business. Current events are discussed within the context of the appropriate theory. Students make the connection between the event and text material and can relate to the world outside of the classroom. Highlights include: Chapter 1: Globalization- the section dealing with the debate between scholars on the merits and drawbacks of globalization has been expanded. This debate is concerned with the impact of globalization on job security, income levels, labor policies, economic growth, the environment, and national sovereignty. Chapter 12: The Strategy of International Business. An emerging theme in the strategy literature has been the extent to which multinational companies can leverage the skills and competencies of their foreign subsidiaries, using them to benefit the entire corporation.

                                                    Book Description

The new challenges and opportunities created by the spread of globalization have reshaped both institutional and individual responses to this phenomenon. This comprehensive analysis of the way in which governments and firms have responded to globalization examines closely the options available to both, and the historical and institutional contexts to the strategic decisions made.

Responding to Globalization draws together a panel of international experts in a conceptually rigorous examination of the profound impact of globalization. Subjects covered include:

                                                    * The international monetary system after the Euro
                                                    * The effect on the Japanese software industry
                                                    * The dynamics of globalization strategy in South Korea
                                                    * Australian integration into the global economy
                                                    * The impact on Russia in its move towards a market economy

This rigorous survey, and companion volume to Coping with Globalization, focuses on the political, ideological and economic factors lying behind responses to globalization. It is essential reading for all those interested in globalization, international relations or international political economy.

                                                        Book Description

Despite the ease with which it is often conducted, doing business across borders is not the same as doing it at home. Rather, it entails a whole new set of managerial challenges: re-assessing competitive advantage; evaluating diverse political environments and legal structures; considering the impact of currency fluctuations and trading regimes; and understanding widely disparate cultures and business norms. Using the cases presented in this book, instructors can help their students build a framework of analysis that will enable them to understand the challenges of international trade and investment and master the opportunities these represent.
