Book Description
As corporations become increasingly more powerful, their decisions have a larger impact on the social and ecological landscape both domestically and internationally. In Ethics and HRD, Tim Hatcher shows how human resource development departments can foster ethical consciousness and play an important role in transforming their organizations into responsible corporate citizens. He describes the relationship between ethical leadership, social responsibility, and HRD and shows how to synthesize them into a new and more sustainable paradigm for HRD. The first book of its kind, it will serve as a guide for managers, human-resource professionals, and students of HRD alike.
Customer Reviews:
Complex but Seminal Work.......2004-12-22
Tim Hatcher's Ethics and HRD is the first book-length treatment of what most would think are two obviously connected areas - business ethics and the development of human resources. In Ethics and HRD, Hatcher identifies the challenges of "globalization, high-speed technological changes, wildly fluctuating economies, a changing workforce, an unstable environmental climate, and erratic politics". Because of these challenges, Hatcher argues that "we have come to a point where we must have people and organizations that do the right thing ..., organizations and leaders that are moral, ethical, and socially responsible". "HRD professionals," writes Hatcher, "have been complicit in helping to create organizations and workplaces that do little to enhance the human spirit or protect the environment". He proposes a new approach to human resources development that synthesizes ethical leadership and social responsibility. Hatcher believes that HRD professionals can play an important role in transforming their organizations into socially-responsible corporate citizens.
Hatcher's Ethics and HRD is written in dense prose, subtle to the point of apparent contradiction at times, with frequent repletion. I am uncomfortable with some of the author's New Age ideas, such as Gaian philosophy and ecopsychology, the study of the "relationship between our psyches, related behaviors, and what is happening in our environment". Nevertheless, for a first book-length treatment of this important issue, there are seminal ideas and much that is suggestive. Chapter 10, The Imperatives of HRD, especially the section "Strategies, Programs, and Interventions," provides excellent practical suggestions and a myriad of ideas for future research.
Hatcher reminds us that ethics are vital to our success.......2002-11-13
This volume lays out why adding value to our shared society is not only practical, but ethical as well. Almost always missing from the conventional wisdom presented in the HRD literature, Hatcher lays out the case in convincing manner. It should be must reading and action for everyone in the field.

Book Description
The startling message of this book is that the so-called virgin forests of the world owe much to their symbiotic relationship with the indigenous peoples who live in and on the margins of the forests. Human activities have for millenia "managed" (consciously or unconsciously) the world's forests, resulting in a greatly enriched biodiversity.
The contributors to the book come from many different scientific disciplines, national and cultural backgrounds. Examples of forests are taken from Asia, Africa and South America, thus reflecting the global nature of the phenomenon. The book's conclusions will have far-reaching implications for all who are concerned with the conservation of forests and their indigenous human population.

Customer Reviews:
The PMTS in this book really works........2007-07-07
I read this book many times in the last few years. I learn something new everytime. The PMTS in this book helped me move beyond the "wedge" which stops beginners from improving. I wish all ski instructors teach the PMTS.
Follow up to yellow book.......2007-04-08
Not as revolutionary as the first, but a must have for all skiers.
Get it. Watch the video. Go skiing. Have fun.
Probably the best instructional DVD available.......2006-09-10
This DVD (book) is great for any intermediate/advanced skier wanting to improve. I think that this DVD is even better than Lito Tejada Flores's DVDs. It is hard to say, I watched Lito's DVD before this.
This is way cheaper and way better than a one hour on the slopes instruction !!! And you can improve off-season just by watching the DVD |:)).
Excellent book for expert skiers.......2006-04-18
This book is essential if you want to learn the PMTS system which Harald Harb created. I would recommend that you do that. This is a book for experts and assumes you already have learned to ski, but it would be very useful even if you are a new skier. Just realize that it won't teach you how to snowplow or stem-christi. The ski season is over now (April 06) and I got this too late to use it for 05-06. But, I can tell you that this book is very well presented. Without it I would have had a very hard time understanding how to carve my skis using this technique or understanding why I wouldn't want to make some mistakes that would not be obvious. Important details are revealed in the book that I have found nowhere else. The DVD that comes with the book is a powerful presentation that follows the book's format. The DVD shows some excellent examples of how to do exercises and how to actually ski the technique. It contains demonstrations of using the technique in many types of difficult terrain. This includes bumps which I am particularly interested in where carving is an especially difficult task. I was already aware of this system from several other sources. Without this book, I doubt that I would ever have been able to do it correctly. The book and the DVD work very well together.
Great method-- but HH could use an Editor........2006-02-08
I read Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier 1 and also had the DVD. There was no question as to whether I should get this second volume. I have to say, this season I've decided to stick with one learning method and PMTS is it. And this season, I'm skiing better than ever. I've even had the opportunity to ski with one of Mr. Harb's colleagues and be taught the method firsthand as well. I can say, it's even simpler than it looks in the books.
I found the more I perfect Harb's PMTS method, the more effortless, efficient, and confident my skiing. With much less muscle strain and more control.
This is my one gripe about both books, however (and their DVDs). For a teaching method that is supposed to target and improve the beginner-intermediate and advanced-intermediate alike, Mr. Harb's presenation is highly academic and wordy. I understand that he wants to be comprehensive about the method. Understood. However, reading through both books (ACES II is less of an offender) sometimes feels like reading through a Boeing 767 Engineering manual.
The way the chapters are presented and the sections titled hardly differentiates one from the other. Even in the first book, the names of some sections were only different by one word out of four. Then very simple moves would be described repeatedly, redundantly, and ad nauseum, proving him the King of Overstatement. I often wondered while reading, "Couldn't HH have devised more memorable lesson names for the lessons than (e.g.) 'Inside Foot to Little Toe Edge'?"
These are all very simple moves. They shouldn't have been so complicated and confusing to comprehend. I wonder if I would have been able to grasp it at all had I not had some live (albeit informal) instruction from a PMTS pro.
I don't think Mr. Harb should worry that his PMTS method is so simple it would make too short of a book otherwise-- he includes so much other fantastic information on gear and conditioning that he could have cut the PMTS lessons copy to be more reader-friendly.
I think Mr. Harb once nailed simplicity in his initial DVD, when he simply professed, "Release, Transfer, Engage." Other than that, he succeeded in confusing the heck out me many times by overstating principles and jumping topic instead of focusing on simplifying RTE movements one at a time.
One thing I do love is the cheat sheets you can tear out and bring with you on the slopes. These are ingenius, and shows how much HH wants to teach us great skiing. In fact, I don't know how any other ski book or video has gotten along without something similar. HH answered a common dilemma for me, who looks at many skiing videos: How do you remember the lessons from a book or video to actually practicing on-slope?
Perhaps HH should have used the cheat sheets as a starting point for the book chapters-- they're much simpler and broken down much more logically.
I think once you read and re-read the book and live with it for a while, get used to HH's lengthy method of presentation and simplify it yourself, this is the only ski instruction you may ever need. Unfortunately I wish Mr. Harb did the simplifying for us in advance.
I still highly recommend for anyone who wants to get out of the Intermediate Rut.

Between Ocean and City (Columbia History of Urban Life)
ASIN: 0933670079 |
Book Description
The true story of those from Rockaway, New York who ran to help on September 11, and then faced another unprecedented tragedy when American Airlines Flight 587 nose-dived into their small community.
Few places--other than Ground Zero itself--can more acutely mark before and after September 11 and November 12, 2001 than the Harbor Light, a neighborhood pub in Rockaway, located in the shadows of Manhattan's skyscrapers.
-Before, you might meet regular customer, George Johnson, there. After, he's one of the flag-raising firefighters in the now-famous photo reminiscent of the marines at Iwo Jima.
-Before, you might bump into Mike Moran. After, he's the firefighter immortalized on a best-selling CD, who told a packed Madison Square Garden that Osama Bin Laden could "kiss his royal Irish ass."
-Before, young stockbrokers would get a good-natured ribbing from their firefighting buddies for choosing the "safe" career path. After, you'd find they weren't so safe after all.
-Beforein fact, just the night beforeyou might have seen Tommy Carroll and Danny Suhr yelling at the Giants as they were losing the season opener to the Denver Broncos. After, Tommy is the guy who got lucky. A fire company was short a man so he filled in. Had he stayed with his regular crew, he'd be deadjust like the rest of them. Truth is, he's not so lucky. He can still hear the sound of humans hitting the ground from 100 stories above him. And Danny? He's dead
killed by one of the jumpers.
-Before, you'd meet Pete Hayden, Deputy Chief FDNY, having a beer with his brother Jack, who moonlights behind the bar when he's not fighting fires himself. After, you wouldn't see Pete much. He stayed at Ground Zero, working every day for two months straight. When he finally decided to give himself a day off, he picked November 12the day American Airlines Flight 587 crashed into his Rockaway neighborhood
right next to the Harbor Light.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful book about a quaint town.......2006-05-28
To know Rockaway is to absolutely know what it's like to not be able to live without Rockaway. Kevin Boyle captures Rockaway's darkest moments and shows how a community bonds together and rebuilds. He shows our strength and our unity during these tragic times. Thanks Kevin.
Well done........2006-05-14
Kevin Boyle writes about Rockaway and its inhabitants with respect and humor. It has a nice balance of history, humor, and gripping unreal reality. I am from the area and lost a loved one. This book was tough for me but I can honestly say it is the most personal and realistic look at not just the firefighters that were lost, but the people that were lost. I recommend it.
- James Suhr
Engrossing read.......2006-03-09
Fascinating account of the history of The Rockaways, and the devestating impact of 9/11 and the November 2001 airline accident. The reader is introduced to a number of families, and how they were impacted by the two tragedies. It is a wonderful read, and although The Rockaways are a scant few miles from Manhattan, the feeling is one of a small-town, where neighbors look out for neighbors and there is a community spirit of togetherness.
Rockaway Rises!.......2006-03-08
I must have read twenty 9/11 books and only came upon this after doing a search about 9/11 books. I had only heard of Rockaway Beach from the song, Rock, Rock, Rock, Rockaway Beach. I didn't know such an amazing place actually existed. Kevin Boyle writes of a place we want to call home and of people we want as friends. The bravery and toughness seen here is superhuman, and so is the goodness and strength. It's a story I'll never forget.
A Work of Art - Only in Words.......2005-09-09
Being from "Rockaway", although technically from Breezy Point, I know what the people around here faced in both tragic events. I know the numbers involved. I decided to read this book because I wanted to know the names and thoughts behind those numbers. It was nice to know about all the places described in this book, and I found myself nodding at many of the comments or descriptions about life in Rockaway. Rockaway is really THE forgotten part of New York City, and this book puts us out there. I particularly liked the sections about the history of Rockaway, most of which I knew absolutely nothing about.
Thanks Kevin, for bringing out Rockaway's story and for making it so genuine and truthful!!!

Book Description
John B. Severance, whose latest biography was Einstein, Visionary Scientist, now turns his research skills and fine eye for detail to fiction. The last two years of the Civil War are the setting for this fast-paced story of a 15-year-old Maryland farm boy who joins the Union Army, despite being torn between loyalty to his father, a Union officer, and loyalty to his grandfather, a Confederate. When foraging Confederate soldiers burn down the barn on Jem's land, he and his best friend go off on what they think will be a glorious adventure. But they are hardly prepared for the true face of battle as they fight the enemy—boys like themselves—in the woods and swamps, become part of the regiment proudly known as General Barlow's Boys, march through blood-soaked cornfields, and witness death. Details of the soldiers' daily life and vivid depictions of actual battles and historical figures are interwoven with bits of dark humor and even a touch of romance in this well-wrought novel that clearly shows there is no glory in war.
Customer Reviews:
Can YA readers really brave the fire of war?.......2003-04-09
The Civil War is in its climax, and Gem Bridwell, a fourteen-year-old boy, gets caught up in the "glory" of war that surrounds him in the small farming town of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Gem's father, a Union officer gets injured earlier in the war, but the call for duty by young men to take a stand to keep the Union in tact returns him to the battlefield. Trapped between his pa's love to keep America unified and Gem's grandfather's view that the southern way of life needs to be preserved, with the atrocities of war brought home to Gem, he runs off with his boyhood friend Hank to find the "glory" in war. War teaches Gem and Hank quickly that playing war in Gaithersburg is not like facing down the Rebs when you hear that rebel yell and bayonets charging down on you. War makes a man out of Gem and when the smoke finally clears, only he can find his "glory" in the drastically changed America.
In Braving the Fire by John B. Severance, did an adequate job of depicting a young man's journey to find manhood and define himself in the changing world around him, but the soul searching to find glory left me with an overly romanticized depiction of the Civil War. Making war simplistic shadows the pain and torment that it brings to the people and country and with Gems journey to find "glory", war is purely just romanticized to depict a harrowing journey for the young adult reader.
