        Book Description

How effective is western aid-agency intervention in Africa? What can African women do to manage the AIDS crisis? Can western feminist theory be applied to the rural African context? These vital issues, and many others, are considered in this topical book by eminent scholars and development consultants. The book aims to increase awareness of the importance of women agricultural producers to African material development and to expose the western biases that have traditionally pervaded the study of rural African women. The authors' critical analyses of conventional research methodology and key 'women and development' debates over the last three decades will stimulate new research perspectives.Students and scholars of development, development workers and policymakers will all find this book fascinating reading.

1 out of 5 stars Too many errors.......2007-09-26

When I was a kid I got the 4th edition as a birthday present. In the ten years thereafter I don't remember running into many errors.

I ordered the 9th edition for the next generation last spring, and have read most of A-F myself. There are so many errors (at least one per page) in this edition that I wouldn't recommend anyone using this encyclopedia for anything serious. I do not count simple spelling/grammar errors, only things that change the fundamental meaning of a definition.

Readers interested in mathematics or physics should not rely on any mathematical expression. Simple operators like plus/minus can be mixed up, as well as symbols for variables. Often variables are not properly defined, or in some cases incorrectly defined. Readers interested in chemistry should ignore most 2D organic structures because valance and resonance are often ignored.

Every book has it faults, and encyclopedias with many authors are especially vulnerable. IMHO Editor Glenn D. Considine has not done enough "quality control" to ensure that Van Nostrand's Nine is better than, e.g., Wikipedia.

If there were only a few errors per many pages I would have gladly sent my errata to the Editor. One per page leads me to the conclusion: Do not buy this book.

(For Mathematics you're better off with the 31st Edition of the CRC Standard Math Tables, ISBN 1-58488-291-3)

3 out of 5 stars Great reference but poor value.......2002-12-04

There are three classes of science & technology encyclopedias currently available. The best and most comprehensive one, by far, is the 20+ volume 15,600 page McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology-it's in a class by itself but it will cost [quite a bit]. The next class of science & tech encyclopedias are what you might call the mammoth 2-hand desktops. There are only two in this class, Von Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia and the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science & Technology. The next class of science & tech encyclopedias are the smaller 1-hand desktops of which there are many. After looking at them all and buying several, I've come to the conclusion that the two mammoth desktop encyclopedias are the most useful and the best value. The 20+ volume McGraw-Hill would certainly be nice to have, but if you're the average non-scientist college-educated layman it's too expensive (you could buy a top of the line PowerMac G4 computer for that price) for an encyclopedia whose scientific content will be obsolete in a few short years until McGraw-Hill follows Britannica and makes it available on affordable CDs or online. On the other hand, the smaller more affordable desktop 'encyclopedias' are really misnamed dictionaries given their tremendously broad scope and relatively short length, making them virtually useless (except for James Trefil's excellent Encyclopedia of Science and Technology). That leaves the two mammoth desktop encyclopedias in the middle; they're the best values: large enough to be truly useful, yet small enough to be affordable. Comparing these two qualitatively, they're both authoritative, scholarly, and top-notch. I read each of the encyclopedia's articles on data, information, and computer technology (an admittedly small sample of the enormous content of each). I found the Concise McGraw-Hill to be much more useful. The larger Von Nostrand had more information on these subjects, but it was of such a technical nature that only IT specialists with a heavy mathematics background could understand it. That's great for other professors (who probably wouldn't be consulting a desktop encyclopedia for help in their field anyway) but not very helpful to non-specialists. In other words, as a college-educated liberal arts generalist I learned more from the content of the Concise McGraw-Hill. Comparing them quantitatively in terms of their value, the Concise McGraw-Hill is also a much better value. Von Nostrand's 4192 page encyc. [is costly] while the 2318 page Concise McGraw-Hill goes for [cheaper]. For the price of Von Nostrand's you can purchase the Concise McGraw-Hill and Trefil's smaller but excellent work and still have [money] to spare. Until McGraw-Hill and/or Von Nostrand's delivers their content in more economical and accessible forms the printed Concise McGraw-Hill is the best value available (December 2002).

5 out of 5 stars The Best General Reference in Science Sees an Innovative 9th.......2002-07-01

VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, 9th Edition edited by Glenn D. Considine and Peter H. Kulik (Wiley-Interscience)Chronicals significant scientific advancements with special attention to Life-Biosciences; Chemistry; Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Energy Sources and Power Technology; Mathematics and Engineering Sciences; Medicine, Anatomy, and Physiology; Physics; Plant Sciences; Space and Planetary Sciences
Continuing a proud tradition of excellence that dates back nearly seven decades to the First Edition, published in 1938, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA now finds itself in the Information Age. Born before the Atomic Age and updated at intervals ever since, the book now finds itself in the Information Age, and much has changed. Indeed, so much has changed for this edition that, in answer to the first question of what is new, we might just as well ask: What isn't new?
With frequent, extensive revisions, this work has kept speed with advances in science throughout the 20th century and now the tradition continues into the 21st century with this landmark Ninth Edition. A concise, extensive, and accessible resource, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA remains a reference work that contains comprehensive coverage of all areas of science including engineering, mathematics, and medicine.
Much of the existing material has been extensively revised, with new or completely rewritten articles in emerging technologies like genetics engineering and cloning, bioprocess engineering, astrobiology and the universe, artificial intelligence, AIDS and STDs, global warming, computer science and the Internet, and flat panel display technology. Each topic is discussed progressively, beginning with a simple definition expressed in plain terms, developing into a more detailed treatment, and augmented by additional reading suggestions containing both updated print and Internet references. Topics covered in VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA include animal science, anatomy, astronomy, atmospheric science, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, earth science, energy sources, information science, life science, materials, mechanical engineering, medicine, mining, physics, physiology, planetary science, structural engineering, and a host of other subjects.
The essence of VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA is enduring summary research, and it remains a fine, concise, comprehensive, and accessible general science work. Its intellectual scope ranges from the introductory to the highly technical in a vast and ever‑expanding array of topical coverage in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and more. As has long been the case, the editors have designed the book to be approachable by students of many ages. An important feature continued in this work, therefore, is the progressive development of the discussion of each topic, beginning with a simple definition expressed in plain terms, developing into a more detailed treatment, and augmented by often‑extensive Additional Reading suggestions.Contemporary readers can now turn to VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA for information about how their daily lives are increasingly affected by the sophistication of today's science and the complexity of modern technology. They will be reminded that knowledge and discovery exist in a continuum, and that often, but not always, what is new depends entirely on what came before.
It is obvious to the editors we have entered a new Age of Discovery, as witnessed by the scores of new entries on topics that were in their nascent stages in 1994 with the 8th edition. The 9th Edition features entirely new or completely rewritten home articles or whole families of articles on the full array of topical coverage, including but by no means limited to: Genetics, Engineering, Human Genome Project (The), and Cloning; Bioprocess Engineering (Biotechnology); Space Shuttle, Space Stations, Spacecraft Missions, Satellites (Communications and Navigation), Cosmology, X‑ray Astronomy (family of articles), Astrobiology and The Universe; Artificial Intelligence (family of articles); Medicine, Diseases, Vaccines, Vision (family of articles), AIDS, and STDs; Climate, Global Warming, and Acid Rain; Gerontology and Biochemical Theories of Aging; Computer Sciences and The Internet; and Flat Panel Display Technology (family of articles).
Next the suggested readings at the end of articles now contain both updated print and Internet references. One has only to engage a typical search engine, on any server, on a large topic, say Artificial Intelligence, to realize the value of these sources. Instead of beginning with "hits" that number in the thousands, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA readers will have the luxury of having much of the culling already done for them, as they will be offered good "first places" to go for more information. These thousands of references throughout the Ninth Edition will, one hopes, provide a bridge to further and deeper knowledge on literally scores of topics.
New to this edition, editors have added detailed Time Lines and Glossaries to some of the large home articles (Bioprocess Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Vision and the Eye, Optical Fiber Systems, The Internet and many others) to offer "at a glance" information and historical perspective. Finally, the editors have added brief biographies of scores of scientists whose work is alluded to in the text of the book. A history of their times is not complete without mention of their works. Science is history.
A statistical summary of the Ninth Edition would include (1) more than 8,000 entries; (2) more than 9,000 crossreferences for convenient retrieval of information; (3) an alphabetical index with more than 19,500 lines; and (4) 4,378 diagrams, graphs and photographs, and in excess of 550 tables. The interior references in the book, where one article refers to another article that offers augmented or corollary coverage, and the visual aids, as well as the index, have been entirely overhauled; this will result in much greater ease in "navigating" the book.It is the best place to begin with encompassing the vast innovations of the science at the beginning of the 21st century. VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA is the best reference for initial consultation and orientation. REPRESENTATIVE TOPICAL COVERAGE:

          Book Description

"Do not expect easy answers or simple solutions here on these pages. . . but then "that is the fun, the excitement, the joy of involvement in the warrior arts of accomplishment. . . . It pleases me no end to see the world at large now welcoming the knowledge of ninjutsu's ages in the form of these books by the art's grandmaster ." -- From the Foreword by Stephen K. Hayes In an uninhibited dialogue from a recent meeting with his top instructors from around the world, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi discusses his personal journey through the mysteries of the ancient art of the phantom warrior. His topics cover the nutritional needs of a ninja, the changing physical attributes of the "new" ninja, details on training for the novice as well as the advanced student, and the spiritual aspects of ninja training and how it applies to the modern world. With numerous photos, Dr. Hatsumi demonstrates the extemporaneous techniques that flow from his form of training and how some of his top students have developed their own styles of ninjutsu. Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the grandmaster of the nine ninjutsu schools that comprise the ninja tradition, is an artist with brush and ink, a medical practitioner of seikotsu, and a prolific writer .

5 out of 5 stars Small Book, Big Lessons.......2007-04-28

Sometimes, the best books to learn from are books of interviews with a master of some particular thing. This book is no exception and packs a lot of good info in a very few pages.

The questions and answers that go back and forth between students and teacher reveal much and hint at even more.

I return to this book every year or so and seem to find more in it at every read! (Always a good sign.)

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Dr. Hatsumi says (paraphrasing from memory...) that no matter how strong a student becomes he must remember that nowadays anyone can be killed with a gun. A warrior who does not understand his own weakness ultimate faces doom more from himself than from others.

          Definitely worth reading multiple times.

          5 out of 5 stars Starting out.......2006-12-05

This is the first book I ever read on the subject of Budo. It got me hooked. It's well written, playful and gives an interesting view of some of the first western students of Hatsumi-Sensei. You get a good down to earth connected feel when you finish the book. I did and it's kept me in gambatte mode through 10 years of training. I've lent this book out a lots had to buy new copies. It's well worth it.

          Highly recommended!

          5 out of 5 stars A good documented conversation.......2006-11-10

I recently obtained a copy of this book since for a time it was only available in the early 90's through the Bujinkan Dojo. I have been a ninjutsu practitioner since the late 80's and after finally reading this I can say it is a very good look into what it is like to sit with Hatsumi and feel his verson of what true ninjutsu and ninpo is about. I recomend it to anyone serious at persuing the art.

1 out of 5 stars The devil went down to...Okinawa?.......2005-12-15

I had no idea that Charlie Daniels was a ninja. But, apparently he is. He sits in on this diatribe with the good "doctor." Doctor of what, they don't tell you. But, if "Dr." is good enough for the legendary fiddle player, it's good enough for me. Sign me up.

4 out of 5 stars Wisdom and practice..........2005-12-08

Everyone seeking wisdom in the art of Ninjutsu,i really reccomend this book since the Soke himself answers to many interesting questions. Everyone seeking to learn Ninjutsu through a book should instead train for real.

                    Book Description

Envision a world without poverty or economic oppression-a place where humankind can attain its potential amidst the weightlessness of true freedom. Imagine the United States, and the rest of the world, without hunger or homelessness where educated societies enjoy all the fruits of their labor. In such a society it would not be necessary to hand over your hard-earned dollars to the government in payment of ever-increasing taxes. Such a vision is no doubt utopian, but Jacques Jaikaran introduces us to a radical economic reorganization of what is now a debt culture and proposes a monetary revolution the results of which would virtually eliminate debt as we know it.

Debt Virus deals with the anatomy and physiology of money, the lifeblood of commerce and industry and hence the economy. Jaikaran points out a monetary error at the root of our cyclical economic problems and prescribes a cure that promises to benefit all mankind.

5 out of 5 stars the hard truth about money.......2007-08-01

If you want to understand money, its function, its creators, its effects on society and the ills of all human being, it is the only book that will enlighten you about the dangerous power of banking institutions.

2 out of 5 stars Monetary revolutionary or nutball?.......2004-01-10

He makes some interesting points. And then repeats them over and over and over. He also gives no suggestion for implementing his solution, other than everyone with a loan suing the bank for loaning them illegitimate money. I believe he is currently incarcerated in a federal prison for tax fraud (claimed Texas was not really a state and therefore didn't have to file tax returns).

5 out of 5 stars Debt Virus, a short synopsis.......2003-04-17

This book is written at a high school level but it is more
informative than most college textbooks on the subject
                    of money and banking...

                    The problem:

Every dollar in existence represents a dollar of debt owed by an
individual, a business firm, or a governmental unit. Few
understand that all our money arises out of debt and IOU
                    operations.

When a storekeeper secures a $10,000 loan from the bank, there is
no transfer of funds. The bank simply makes a bookkeeping entry
that increases the storekeeper's checking account by $10,000. By
doing so, the bank has just created new money. In addition, the
bank expects the storekeeper to repay the loan with interest on
the money it created by the bookkeeping entry.

In an all-debt or debt-dominant money system it is mathematically
and physically impossible to repay the aggregate debt, for only
money representing the principal is ever created. The interest
that must be repaid along with the principal debt is never
created. For some people to repay their principal and interest,
their interest must come from the principal created for other
peopleýs debt. A deficit in the aggregate money supply thus
occurs making it impossible for other debtors to repay their
principal, much less principal and interest. Given such a money
system, it is only a matter of time before all the wealth of the
productive sector of society is transferred into the hands of the
                    money creators.

                    The solution:

Debt-free money, in the form of "US Notes."

The dollar bills in your pocket are called Federal Reserve Notes.
Under the present system, the US Treasury acts as a "print shop"
for the Federal Reserve. The Treasury only prints money when
asked to do so by the Federal Reserve System. Its order to print
money does not come from the President or Congress.

When the government wants money, it has only two choices, it can
either tax American citizens and businesses, or it must borrow the
money from somewhere. When the government borrows money from the
Federal Reserve, it issues an IOU (a bond) to the Fed, which then
creates checkbook money by means of a bookkeeping entry. This
newly created money is then lent to the government, at a price,
known as interest. In order to pay the interest on this national
debt, the government either collects taxes, or borrows more money.

The author proposes that Congress is legally entitled to order the
US Treasury to print US notes. He goes on to suggest that the
Treasury should be the only authorized source of money in the
United States, and it ought to answer to the government. In this
way, money would be created by government but no interest would be
owed. This in turn would eliminate the need for an income tax.

                    My thoughts:

The author's solution is similar to what Abraham Lincoln tried to
do when he issued "greenbacks" to fund the civil war.

Although the author's presentation of the problem is excellent, I
have misgivings about his solution. Once the government is given
the right to print fiat money, the potential for abuse would be
enormous. For instance, a left-wing government might decide to go
on a spending spree and propose all sorts of public works projects,
from socialized medicine to government ownership of entire
                    industries.

Unless equal attention is given to making sure that the power of
government to intrude into the lives of citizens and businesses
(both public and private) is limited, the author's solution might
just put us on the fast track to socialism, and we could end
up with the very tyranny we seek to prevent. In my opinion,
debt-free money issued by the government should only be attempted
if, and only if, constitutional safeguards ensuring limited
                    government are in place.

Ironically, socialism is precisely what the "money power" wants.
Since they control the government through indebtedness, they would
like the government to assume even greater control over the economy
and the lives of ordinary citizens.

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. In the final analysis,
our social problems are not so much political or economic, as they
                    are spiritual:

ýIf my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
                    their land.ý

5 out of 5 stars Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt.......2002-06-24

Frederick Soddy wrote a book in the 1920's with the same title as my review. Dr. Soddy was writing about the monetary system in England and he reached the same conclusions as Dr. Jaikaran. Dr. Soddy also won the Nobel Prize in Physics for work involving the discovery of Isotopes. Dr Soddy was clearly a very bright man, but after reading his book I must tell you he was obviously better with numbers and physics than he was with the English language.

Jacques Jaikaran, on the other hand, can write. Dr. Jaikaran and Dr. Soddy reached identical conclusions about money and the way it works in our society, but after reading "Debt Virus" you'll have a clearer, more understandable picture than you will after wading through "Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt."

This is an important book that anyone who earns, saves, invests or uses "money" (obviously I mean everyone) ought to read.

I interviewed Dr. Jaikaran for a radio show I once hosted and have heard him speak back in 1995. He taught me more about money than I had previously learned in four years as an undergraduate, three years in law school and twenty five years of business. And, he did so in an engaging, easy to understand manner.

Dr. Jaikaran (he's a medical doctor by the way) learned about money, after becoming a successful surgeon, when he was invited to join a bank board. Being a responsible person, he actually read the materials he was given by the bank, the FDIC, the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve. Then after he resigned from the bank board and after the bank later failed, he translated all of that into English you and I can understand.

Dr. Jaikaran has made a compelling case that our civilization is piling up too much debt, causing debt inflation and creating dangerous monetary conditions. He also provides intriguing information about who owns the Federal Reserve (it's not who you think), how banking really works, the history of money, where our money comes, what banking systems might offer safer alternative systems from and other important facts. By the way, he's not a "gold bug" arguing for a return to the gold standard.

But, does any of this really matter to regular people like us? Well, if you paid attention to current events over the past five years, you will have noticed a series of currency crises in Thiland, Russia and Argentina. Those people we watched on television mobing banks, trying to get their money out of Argentina while it was still worth something and worried about the economic survival of their families, could easily have been you and me. Their system is basically the same as ours.

Dr. Jaikaran is a very bright, forthright and opinionated man with strong views on a variety of subjects. You may disagree with him about somethings, I do; however, I've not been able to find fault with his facts, logic or conclusions when it comes to money and debt.

If Dr. Jaikaran and Frederick Soddy are right about money and debt, and I think they are, then our monetary system is in grave danger.

I feel strongly enough about this that I've given this book to at least half a dozen people and suggested it to dozens of others. I would have given more away if I could find people willing to think about money, fractional reserve banking and debt.

                    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Reading.......2002-05-27

This is one of the most thought- provoking and scary books I have ever read. Clearly solutions must be found to the incredible build up of world debt to avoid world crisis. Dr. Jaikaran has a solution that sounds plausible and I recommend that everyone tell those in power about this book. You will not be able to put it down!

                          Book Description

The present study analyses the international activities of British start-up companies in high-technology industries. The research makes the following contributions. First, it is the first study that establishes the prevalence of internationally operating start-up companies in a particular country. Accordingly, we find that the majority of British high-tech start-ups have engaged in international activities within a few years since formation. Second, it consolidates the existing knowledge in the fields of international entrepreneurship and subjects it to empirical testing. Third, it assesses the power of different theories in international business to explain the cross-border activities of start-up companies. Overall, the research lends support to a resource-based perspective of international entrepreneurship since the proxies for transaction cost-based arguments and the internationalisation process theory are of limited explanatory power.
