First off, this is not a dictionary. As titled, it is 2,000 of the most commonly used kanji you'll need to understand Japanese. I used this book during college (my major was Japanese and World Business, Univ. of TN) and I somehow lost it and did miserably in my classes without it. The book has two ways to reference the kanji; the first is the onyomi or hiragana spelling, the second is by stroke count. Like I said, get this book if you're taking Japanese classes, it will make your life much easier as the course gets more advanced.

Don't trust too much about ethimologies, they are not so accurate, but they are ther to help the reader to memorize.
There is something better now, but this was for ages the only sensible book to try to master Kanji.
Every student had one, and it's still very good, more for reharsal then to learn from the scratch

A list of 2000 kanji containing relevant information on each of them like sound, meaning, reading examples, etc
Also, easy to find kanji by number of strokes, by radical or english aphabetical.
Even gives you ideas of how to designing your own flashcards...
I am learning japanese and i've been able to memorize easy kanji with it. Summing up, you won't regret buying this 2000 kanji book! :)

I found this book fun to browse through. The calligraphy is great (much nicer than the otherwise superior Henshall book), and I like how the Chinese readings were included (comparing them with the Japanese readings is amusing). The information is a bit outdated since the book only covers the old Toyo Kanji and some others instead of the revised Joyo Kanji in current use.

This is a timely book on politics in Armenia and its Diaspora since Armenia's independence. The volume analyzes how conflicting interpretations of history have nurtured competing policies and influenced the future of Armenia and of its relations with its neighbors. The author challenges ideologized views of war and diplomacy, of the Genocide and the politics of its recognition, and of national unity and political legitimization. He explores the Nagorno Karabagh conflict, the difficult relations with Turkey, and the relationship between Homeland and Diaspora. The author argues that the resignation of President Levon Ter-Petrossian in 1998 constituted a watershed in the ongoing battle between pragmatic and ideological concepts of independence, statehood, and nationhood.

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the Armenian political landscape since the rise of the movement and the position of political actors regarding the major issues confronting Armenia during the decade. Chapter 2 discusses the resignation of President Levon Ter-Petrossian as an event significant for understanding the relationship between the problem of Karabagh and the choices that must be made between the two kinds of answers, pragmatism and national ideologies. Chapter 3 details the position of political parties and leaders on the resolution of the conflict and the role the conflict is assigned in their political program and worldview. Chapter 4 covers the important themes of Genocide recognition, unity, and political legitimacy and their significance for a strategy to achieve a higher vision or maximalist program. Chapter 5 analyzes Diasporan realities and the ability of the Diaspora to perform the role it is assigned by maximalists. The last chapter argues against maximalism and in favor of normalcy.

The other reviewer has some valid points, but I think he may be blinded by the fact that quite a few people disagree with certain choices that the author has made in his personal and political life. In my opinion, this does not take away from the fact that this is the most honest and realistic books on the current political situation in Armenia. One who is not familiar with some of the basic issues in Armenia politics may not enjoy this book as much.

Disappointing apologia.......2000-05-24

Libaridian's disjointed narrative makes excuses for the failings of the autocratic ruler he served as advisor--some would say éminence grise. Claiming confidentiality, he fails to reveal anything new; not that his "revelations" would have been particularly credible. One might have hoped for a coherent explanation with a touch of self-criticism. One would have been disappointed.

Book Description

From Frontier to Backwater follows the interaction of politics, economy, society, and ecology in the upper Senegal valley from the middle of the nineteenth century through the end of World War I. During this turbulent period, the region was transformed from an export-producing area on the frontier of European expansion into a marginal labor reserve. The valley included the sparsely populated regions of Bundu, Khasso, and Gajaaga, along with the societies of Bambuk and Gidimaka in the transitional zone between the Sahara Desert and the Guinea rain forest. Over time, changing French interests constantly shifted the areas of importance, yet settlements along the water routes were generally larger, more economically diverse, and more commercialized. At the middle of the nineteenth century, the diversity and vitality of the economy, along with the growing colonial presence in the heartland, led to the recovery of the upper Senegal Valley after several ecological and war-induced crises. However, the entire region was gradually marginalized. A fall in gum prices, the severe famine of 1913-1914, intensive war recruitment and mobilization efforts, combined with increased permanent migration, sealed the fate of this valley on the periphery of the French colonial empire.
