Another take..........2006-02-10

I guess I'm wierd, but what I loved about this book was the backstories on the six skaters, their history, families, coaches, etc. Fascinating stuff. What I got from this was a whole new level of respect and admiration for the pairs skaters coming from Russia and China. I'm also happy to see that the two Chinese skaters featured in this book will be skating in Torino 2006. I'll be watching them with great interest - at least as much as NBC allows me to see of them - and thinking about little six-year old Shen Xue and her bloody socks. There's not much new ground broken on the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Olympics, but for anyone interested in knowing more about the skaters involved, I highly recommend this book.

Great Book!!.......2005-06-08

This book has interesting information on the childhoods, tribulations, and triumphs of Jamie Sale, David Pelletier, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, and Elena Berezhnaya. The one person it is lacking information on is Anton Sikharulidze. It goes through their elite careers and touches on competitions leading up to the games. The play-by-play account of the Olympics brings you back to the day you watched the pair's final. If you are looking for information on the scandal other than what was printed in newspapers, don't bother reading this book. Overall, it gives information that is hard to find elsewhere on the six skater's lives before and after the Olympics. I highly reccomend this book.

Too much backstory.......2005-03-26

The book was not my cup of tea. I don't remember the events enough to care about any of the people covered in this book. The part I was most interested in was the scandal with the judging, not with the lovingly written back stories of each of the skaters. By the time the book got to the bit I was interested in I was bored and put the book aside.

Interesting take on an appalling scandal.......2004-12-02

Goodwin covers the Salt Lake figure skating debacle with style, if not altogether truth - the Russian pair gave a superb performance that on any other night would have been worthy of Olympic gold (and still might have in an uncorrupted panel, since it's a subjective sport). Bad judging, however, is nothing new; it takes place at all levels from the recreational ISI to the Olympics. Recommend for those who are interested in the scandal - otherwise, there's really nothing new that skaters and people who closely follow the sport don't already know.

Being a fan of a sport such as figure skating, in a country where we don't have winter, is quite hard. I don't get to see as many competitions or information. It is refreshing to have internet, magazines, and a great book such as The Second Mark. It was so good that I couldn't put it down. Goodwin captured the escense of these six extraordinary athletes in a wonderful way. I recommend this book to everyone who loves a great story.

Memoirs of Donald (DJ) Davenport?.......2006-08-25

Whoever declared that this book is "... clearly the childhood memoirs of a grown up, black, Donald Davenport..." did not even look inside the back cover.

Donald Davenport is my first cousin (our fathers - both now deceased)were brothers - and we share the same and equal parts of Scotch-Irish and English roots!

Pleeeeease... just read the book, and don't make this a racial issue, or review. It is a wonderful and heart-warming book. As a writer, myself, I would recommend it to everyone. I have a copy for my grandchildren.

good holiday story.......2005-02-05

This is a story set in a small town in Texas. Rodney and DJ are the main characters. Rodney is a young black boy who is being raised by his grandmother. He is very smart and does well in school. DJ has to work hard and study to get by in school. One day Rodney and DJ get in a fight. They are made to spend the night at each others house as punishment. They start to become friends despite how different they are.
The book moved at a fast pace. It kept the attention of the reader well.

I would recommend the book to kids ages 11-14. They will gain a lot of knowledge from the story.

This is a great book that does indeed have the feeling and makings of tv movie. I personally know Donald Davenport today and I am positive he did not grow up in rural Texas as a young black child. The dustcover obviously displays an adult WHITE Donald Davenport just as he looks today. The book is a story. Fiction. It is a book idea by Kenny Rogers brought to life by Donald. It is not a recollection of an oppressed mans views of his childhood. Please consider this book in your purchases of a quick read that will make you smile and think!

I'm Dreamin' of a Black and White Christmas.......2002-12-01

Reading between the lines, this is clearly the memoir of co author Donald "DJ" Davenport's youth as a young, poor, black bookworm in rural Texas.

It would be intersting to have this story from DJ's perspective alone, without the celebrity PC filter of Rogers. There's a modern classic buried deep in these pages, unfortunately, as it now exists, there's also a lot of ABC After School Specials and Hallmark Hall of Fame weepies and a pinch of Uncle Tom patched in to what is essentially a pretentious, contrived and obvious tale.

Come on DJ, tell us the raw, true story of your black childhood with all the racial and religious elements as they were in rural Texas, and in many places still are.

Few issues in the relations between China and the West invoke as much passion as human rights. At stake, however, are much more than moral concerns and hurt national feelings. To Washington, the undemocratic nature of the Chinese government makes it ultimately suspect on all issues. To Beijing, the human rights pressure exerted by the West on China seems designed to compromise its legitimacy. As China's economic power grows and its influence on the politics of developing countries continues, an understanding of the place of human rights in China's foreign relations is crucial to the implementation of an effective international human rights agenda.

In Human Rights in Chinese Foreign Relations, Ming Wan examines China's relations with the United States, Western Europe, Japan, and the United Nations human rights institutions.

Wan shows that, after a decade of persistent external pressure to reform its practices, China still plays human rights diplomacy as traditional power politics and deflects pressure by mobilizing its propaganda machine to neutralize Western criticism, by making compromises that do not threaten core interests, and by offering commercial incentives to important nations to help prevent a unified Western front. Furthermore, at the UN, China has largely succeeded in rallying developing nation members to defeat Western efforts at censure.

In turn, it is apparent to Wan that, while the idea of human rights matters in Western policy, it has seldom prevailed over economic considerations or concerns about national security. Western governments have not committed as many policy resources to pressuring Beijing on human rights as to other issues, and the differing degrees of commitment to human rights-related foreign policy explain why Japan, Western Europe, and the United States, in that order, have gradually retreated from confronting China on human rights issues.

To say that this book is somewhat impenetrable is a bit like saying space is slightly chilly. There certainly are foundational theories that need to be explored in IR, but this book approaches it in the most condescending and repellent way possible. If you enjoy overly-complex, and self-aggrandizing prose, definitely pick one up. If not, there are likely better sources for this material.

I got this book because it was required for my international politics class. It isn't terribly hard to read, and it isn't excruciatingly boring so all in all this isn't a bad book. I probably wouldn't buy it if I didn't need it for class, but it's a good book to go along with the class

A must read for any new-comer to the subject of international relations. Topics covered are varied and relevant. Very applicable to today's world.
